In the Old Testament there is no mention of Satan ever being evil or doing evil deeds himself. Satan is one of gods chief angels (kind of like his enforcer). At worst he's shown to be a henchman who does all of gods dirtywork. You see this is because the Jews had a very different idea of god at that point. The god of the old Jews was viewed as being a sort of personification of the universe. This is why you get lines in the old testament where god claims to be both light and dark, where he claims to have created evil and be vengeful, and so on. Because he is all of these things, that was the point.

The word satan  in Hebrew means "to oppose". In certain greek translations of the old hebrew writings they translated it to mean 'diabolic' but I'm not sure why, exactly. But the word satan was also used as a noun to refer to someone who was an accuser or an adversary. This isn't meant to necessarily reflect an evil person, just someone who is on the other side. For example in a debate you would refer to the other side as your 'satan'. This actually occurs several times in the OT. In Samuel 29:4 the phillistines are distrustful of david, fearing that he would be a satan to them. And in samuel 19:22 Shime-i apologixes to king david, who rejects the apology, saying that they should not be a satan to each other.

Historians think that the idea of hell comes from an Indo-European invasion that occurred around 2000BC which displaced the Kurgan peoples. The Kurgans were hindus (sort of) but when they settled in europe their religious beliefs began to change. The ones who settled in western Europe eventually became the celts and it's believed that druidism and wicca come from them and their beliefs. The ones who settled in the middle east changed as well and eventually developed the concept of salvation and damnation after death. They believed there was a place called the "Bridge of the Petitioner" which you would pass over and be judged by the god, rashu. Those who failed would be tossed off the bridge into damnation. It should be mentioned that hell, damnation, and eternal life are not concepts that exist in the OT.

As for satan, around 650-500 BC the jewish peoples became friends with the persians. The persians at that time followed zoroastrianism, which is the oldest known religion and probably the most influential to other cultures. The religion only enters historical record for the first time around this point, but it existed as far back as around 2000 BC to the knowledge of historians. Anyway back on track, the zoroastrian religion is based on a dualistic approach to the universe, there is a main god who is a being pure good and kindness named Ahura Mazda, he basically had all of the qualities that christians claim god has, except with a better back story and cooler name. His opposite was his twin brother Angra Manyu (Or sometimes called Ahriman). He of course was the creator of all that was evil and a general uncool dude. The Zoroastrians believed that the two gods would fight until the god of evil was eventually defeated at which point there would be a Final Judgement. And yes, the NT writers basically just copy-pasted the Zoroastrian version of the end times into their holy text.

Because the jews and persians were friends the zoroastrian religion began to influence their own. This is where you get the NT portayal of god as being an entity of pure good and loving and blah, blah, blah. But that then meant that he needed an evil opposite. So it became satan since he was probably the best target since his name means 'adversary'. What they never considered was a motivation for satan being evil. Seriously, they never give him one, he just becomes stupidly evil for no reason they ever bother to explain and all of that 'Gods Chief Angel" stuff just gets swept under the rug. The bible mentions satan being cast down from heaven, but it's only mentioned to happen at the end times. The idea of satan rebelling against god because he was jealous of humans when god created them in the beginning comes from paradise Lost, but has no biblical backing at all.

And this is just the early stuff about satan. Like I said, the concept has changed a lot over time.


That aside, the hell mythology evolved over time, because there is nothing like hell in the OT, the Jews do not believe in hell and nothing like hell exist in the OT, the hebrew words translated as hell means death or a dumping ground in Jerusalem back in the days.

God never claimed to be both Light and dark. God has always been the Light as in John 1:4-5

In Him was Life; and the Life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Satan is also called Lucifer which is latin for 'light-bearer' which goes on to the Illuminati theories but I won't get into that now, for the sake of all of us. Pretty much, that was the reason why Lucifer was thrown out of Heaven, because he tried to enlighten himself to be above God. The books of Isaiah and Ezekiel talk about this in very subtle terms but we know they were talking about Satan. Satan was present in the Old Testament when he was afflicting Job and if you read that passage, Satan had to ASK for permission.


It was not God's intention to put Satan in charge of hell. Mind you, Satan was not created to be God's equal. He was created as an angel. Let me use human family now. If a man gives birth to several children and one of them is just downright evil, will the man kill his child? Technically, he had a part in creating that child and as much as God delighted in creating both man and angels, none of us have been put to death, spiritually. Even those that are going or are in hell fire, are not dead. They are just being tortured. Those that have died, have died only in flesh not in spirit. You make it sound as if God is handing over men to the devil so that the devil can discipline them but that is not true. God is saying those that are righteous belong with him and those that are not, should be condemned to the same place as Satan. I said this before and I'll say it again - Satan was the first to go to Hell Fire. He is the pioneer of hell and therefore, automatically in charge of hell. God did not put him in that position. It was by default.

I'm not sure if you have heard the concept of God of Old Testament being different from God of New Testament but all is a lie. The Bible is one book. The Jews separate the Bible and focus on the Old Testament for a reason. if you read the book of the Old Testament, you won't blame them. Israelites when through literal hell because of their disobedience to God. God made a covenant with them that has scared them to death and created a religion for them. Most of the Old Testament, if not all, was focused on the Jews and in the books of the minor prophets, reading the prophecies about Israelites gives you a pretty good idea of how strict God was with them. However, Christians (literally meaning followers of Christ) are different from the Jews. First, we believe in Christ Jesus and because we believe in Jesus Christ, we believe in both the Old and the New Testament.

God has nothing like dirty work. Again going back to the Old Testament, He said He was going to bring death upon the Amorites, the Israelites, Judah, Moab, Babylon. . . he did not need the devil to bring catastrophe upon those nations. So there's nothing like God's dirty work. He does what He says He will do.

The reason of God's vengeance was based on the fact that there was no saviour. You can see that in the New Testament, God is not vengeful because the ultimate life was sacrificed for us. God in the Old Testament, had to deal with the people directly. They had to offer sacrifices but Jesus' death has paid for all the animal sacrifices we can possibly make because the Blood He shed on that cross was blameless.

We are Christians. . . that's the important point here. You seem to be confusing Judaism and Christianity or using one as a yardstick for the other which is not right.
Back to the Christian argument. We are not Jews. If we want to start comparing Judaism to Christianity, that's another ball game entirely. We believe in both the New and the Old Testament hence believing in Heaven and Hell because it was stated in the New Testament. We believe in both Testaments but what separates them is the fact that we have a Saviour in one Testament. And even if the Jews don't believe in Hell, we have one thing in common with them. We all believe in Heaven.

As for the History, we can't use history as a basis. As far as I know, a lot of history is guesswork. Trying to cover up the gaps and coming up with ridiculous theories. Sometimes they have proof. Other times, not a lot to go on.

There is no contradiction there. God banished Satan from Heaven into Hell. Now God does not want anyone to end up in hell. It is repeated time after time in the Bible that He is saddened when human beings are not righteous. It is not His intention but the Devil has come to steal, kill and destroy. Think about it in terms Spider man against Venom and Sandman, I'm sure that will simplify things for you. Spider man was the good one and Venom and Sandman just wanted power. That was what Satan wanted.

Satan is generally evil and hell-fire is a place where he has been sent to suffer for the rest of eternity. It is only right that those that Satan has brought over to his side, should end up with him in hell. He needs more company down there, which is why he keeps bringing doubts into our faith.

I am just bothered by people that would much rather believe in things just because there is no proof. It does not make sense. The only proof we have that the earth is round is satellite pictures and random occurrences such as staring at the water and thinking it meets the sky. Apart from that, we don't see gravity but we feel it and just because it can be calculated, that's what makes everyone believe in gravity. None of us can see God but a lot of us feel him so why would you rather believe that there is no God just so you can have some constrained idea of freedom? No one is free but it is only that we have different degrees of freedom.

2. Christians are afraid to die because none of us know when we will go and if you do as much as tell a simple lie, it could condemn to hell fire.
3. We weep for the dead because no matter where these people are, they will never be in our midst again. Also, some deaths are very painful and unnecessary.
4. Christian leaders are not completely holy. They still have flesh and we are constantly struggling with our flesh. We might be godly in spirit but until we shed the flesh (i.e. die) we are always going to be in a constant struggle with the things of the world. Christian leaders need money for several things and they don't acquire it so that they can intimidate one another or throw parties. They do so and often use that money for the work of God. Not all of them are that selfless but a lot of them are really in tune with these things. It is hard to maintain a building, much more a church with needy people or a constant need for increment.
5. Every Christian is sure about Heaven because that is where we believe God is and we will be worshiping Him when the time is right.

They had May 5, 2000 as the end of the world. I remember that day because I was scared to death. A young girl like me thinking my life at a young age was going to end but that day passed by.

Telz, I don't need to read it. My Bible is all I need. There is no fact to the date Jesus is coming. If you read the book of Jeremiah and Ezekiel well, you would discover that people that God disliked were false prophets. He repeated in Jeremiah several times that he was not happy at the people for trusting in false prophecies that favoured them. Be careful what you believe. These facts might just be a way for them to imbibe some other "facts" into people.

The reason why I asked the question about the crimes is that most religions set guidelines such as don't steal or don't kill or love your neighbour. So does being an atheist liberate you from those constrictions?

Lastly, about the name of Jesus, it has been documented that if you truly believe in the name, it can work miracles. However, people have so much used the name that it has become common knowledge to use it in terms of those situations. Every expression has a background. When you read the bible you find out why people use the expression 'Oh My God'. It's either used in pleasure or when crying to the Lord for help. The fact that people use that expression anyhow doesn't make a difference from the original meaning behind that phrase. Even in conversations, we use it when we are frustrated by something or undergoing some kind of pleasure (in joy and in pain). By the way, the Bible states clearly that we should not use the word in vain. If you call God with your faith behind the word, then things will probably work for the best.

I get why you guys choose to be atheists and all that. You believe you've been enlightened and so on. . . my question is just this: What would it cost you to be a theist? As an atheist, what difference does it make to you ? Do you officially get permission to steal, do you get the permission to hate people?

I can bet anything on it that if any of you are in danger, you call out to God and if that is not ironic, I don't know what is. It might be 'Oh My God!' or even 'Jesus'. These are expressions used in today's world.

Back to Man Utd issues, I am happy where we are now but not comfortable. Man Utd is wonderful for disappointing in time of stepping up. If they don't win tomorrow, I won't be surprised. As long as they don't lose, I'm good to go.

No one should accuse me of not having faith. I am still remembering the beautiful weekend when Arsenal lost, Chelsea lost and to jump into the opportunity, we drew. . . .when we had the opportunity to take off. If we win, I'd be happy though and very happy.

RIP Bawo. . . I hope I'm doing this in error but it does not seem like it so may his soul rest in perfect peace.
