ezeagu: We're talking about Ghana not the US, and since when has the US been the model on how to treat immigrants? They are two different countries. They don't want Nigerians in their country, get over it, many people also do not want Nigerians in their country. Under ECOWAS treaties Nigerian migrants are not illegal in GHANA and vice versa. I understand putting certain restrictions on the inflow of Nigerian businesses into Ghana however for a Nigerian to take a position in support of this to me is unpatriotic and self defeating. you want people to change the country but you do not want to do anything to change it yourself. Typical Nigerians!!! |

ezeagu: Yes, the right to get thrown out. Are legal immigrants granted any rights in the US? |

Bennyboy11: Actually for all the people crying foul, a quick question for you.
Ecowas as a union came into existence around 1975, so what happened to the principle of free movement of labour and goods etc during the "Ghana must go" saga in the eighties?
Should Nigeria have been kicked out of the union or are the rules just meant for Ghana alone to adhere to? Nigeria should have been kicked out of the Union. Does that answer your question. Una no dey tire for "ghana must go" issue. |

ezeagu: How can non-citizens be a minority? Are illegal immigrants granted certain rights in the US? ezeagu: And "minority rights" is dependent on if the majority feels "that it has a special responsibility in actively safeguarding minority rights. Some of these safeguards are: an educational system that fosters awareness of and respect for different cultures or religions; laws and a legal system that protect minority rights; a public discourse in which opinion leaders from politics, cultural life and the media honor their special responsibility in upholding tolerance."
http://www.friends-partners.org/partners/beyond-the-pale/english/70.html
This "minority rights" thing is just an adage. I can't find any dictionary definition that includes "minority rights" in the definition of democracy. Neither can I find one that excludes it on paper but definitely observe this in active democracies world wide. |

ezeagu: Uh, no it doesn't. Democracy is government elected by the majority. Republicanism is what your thinking of. I don't think you want to go into a tug of war in definitions of democracy vs a republic, however it is safe to say that in contemporary terms as stated earlier it "minority rights" are protected under a COTEMPORARY DEFINITION of Democracy. If you can prove other wise with a reference or cite. I will be happy to take a look at it, otherwise NOW BACK TO TOPIC!! |

ezeagu: If it is the will of the people, okay. After all isn't that what 'democracy' is? Democracty includes the "protection" of minority rights over the majority will. |

ezeagu: Why not make those laws? It's their country, it's not by force that they should let foreigners in! If we had a majority of like minded people that thought like this, 3/4 of the people posting here would be experiencing serious log in issues due to erratic NEPA power supply issues. |

Osupru: KnowAll,
You Nigerians are very annoying and behave like spoilt brats. You people think Ghana should make special laws to suit Nigerians? Ghana has made a law for all foreigners and you Nigerians are crying foul. This indicates your lawlessness. Be prepared to leave town if you can't abide by the laws, simple. Ghana won't change its laws because of Nigeria. Ecowas did not state the amount one should pay before doing business in other countries. Every country has an amount you'll have to pay and it varies from country to country, so Mr Big Shot Nigeria, vamoose if you are too special to live by the rules!!! WHY STOP AT THESE SUCH LAAWS WHY NOT ALSO MAKE LAWS THAT REQUIRE FOREIGNERS PAY THE GHANAIAN GOVT $100,000 before they can marry one of its citixens in an effort to protect its people from foreign blood invasion as well! HEHEHEHEHEHE! |

Kobojunkie: Look, I know where this is going and where it will end, if you are just in the mood to attack me just for having an opinion different from yours even on this thread, join the queue. I don't see the relevance of these ramblings of yours to this topic . I will not respond any longer. So feel free to continue on your own here. Who is attacking you. Please don't get a big head and flatter yourself. I merel y made a suggestion to you about what I feel needs to be done so we can get the country to where you and I strongly believe it should be instead o leaving this so called change in the hands of others and you rejected it. This notion is very relevant to the issue being discussed if ghana is making moves we should be doing the same too and need all hands on deck. Talk is cheap lady!! |

Kobojunkie: I don't understand where you are going with this please.
There could be so many other reasons for this. Most developed countries already have such regulations in place , not sure what your point really is. @ Kobo You need to come back to Naija so we can all make it great together as well. We all can leave within our borders and not have to travel out to other countries, force the government to do the same thing Ghana is doing by building up her economy. lay down on the road side and be trampled by armoured tankers until we get the country rolling again no use hiding in the corner shouting rants at the problem. This will not solve anyting. lets take the initiative and go back no. I advocate for policies all naijas to leave every foreign country they re thriving in and go back home. What you say huh? |

shesi: Hahaha,
YEt another Ghana bashing tread on nairaland.
It seems nothing galvanizes nigerians together as much these days as their hate for Ghana. We're glad to be of service.
YOu Nigerians know how to talk. Just empty talk.
First of all, this publication is arrant nonsense. How in the hell do you see this as a move to kick out nigerians? are you friggin kidding me? get over yourselves already!!!
you make everything about you.
Do those of you senselessly ranting on here know what the criteria is for a foreigner to set up shop in your own country?? Check that first before you starting writing nonsense.
Pan African this Pan African that. Now Nigerian knows about PanAfricanism?
I've said this countless times. How is it that the only country in West Africa with a history of State sponsored, widely-backed-by-the-populace Xenophobia now turns around to accuse other countries of xenophobia at every opportunity.
What is protectionist about insisting that only those who are capable to doing credible business be allowed to do business in your country?
Every forward thinking country does it. Maybe the structures don't work in your own country so you don't appreciate some of these things but it's nothing new. Everybody has a minimum standard in place.
If the US allowed every Chinese man with 1000 dollars to immigrate into their country to start a business, before you know it, their ecomony will be over-run by CHinese and all the money will move in the direction of CHina.
Should we allow our own population to be impoverished because we love love love our neighbours who incidentally once kicked out our pregnant women and children from their country when there was a famine in ours?
Basically, you're all allowing sentiments (ill sentiments against Ghana) to inform your opinions of this move. Which btw is not accurately depicted in that article you quoted.
Put the Ghana hate aside and think for a moment what your own government would have done, or should do, if say the Chinese start flooding your country.
If Nigeria wants a trade war, let's go.
At the present, which of the two countries in question prevents the other from exporting certain stuff into their country? Answer: NIGERIA. And yet, all of you are here shouting protectionism protectionism. Are u ffing kiddin me?
WHen Nigeria was flying high in the 80s, none of you gave a Bleep a ss abt ghana, now all we here is Ghana liberia nigeria, SL, are the only english speaking countries bla bla bla
Gbawe, talk is cheap. What you need is a history lesson. Before you attempt to castigate Ghana for so-called illegal moves perfected by Nigeria in the 80s and 90s and in some cases even till today. Cue textile industry. Ghana's market is flooded with textiles (often inferior) from China and Nigeria, Yet our own textile producers could not export to Nigeria, guess why? your government banned it. I've come to expect a little more from you Gbawe. But it seems no nigerian is beyond, hindsighless,over-emotionally-charged, sensationalist, downright wrong, comments when it comes to Ghana. Even your ministers.
Check out conditions in your own marketplace before you accuse someone else of protectionism. We are doing what we think is right for ourselves. You feed yourself before you help someone weed their farm. On an airplane, they advice to put your own oxygen mask on first before attempting to help another person. Even mothers!!
i'm still reading through this myriad of rubbish. I don't hate gahanaians. infact I am planning on going to the world cup to support ya'll Thats brotherly love no? |

hackney: Nigerians even in african countries are seen like a rat infestation. All over the place with majority as bent as the letter 'U'.
Ghana (and all other african countries) should start with seizing any large house susspected to belong to any Nigerian that has even the slightest connection with politics. I think Nigerian politicians all over the world should be hounded back to nigeria and their foreign properties given away.
Nigerians never have a good reputation where ever on earth they are if you take an average view in that location.
Despite all the prayers , Nigeria is still this way. Who knows, maybe when the demons were defeated in heaven, the worst of them fell down and banged his big head in northern Nigeria hence the drough, absolute lack, religious wickedness, political destruction and the 'may nothing work' atmosphere.
Goodluck Nigeria i say. @ HACKNEY SHUT UP! |
