naijadrivablog: So, my first experience with Mercedes Benz is the MB 190E of my Dad back in the late '90s -2000s.
After then, it has been my car, first a 199-1994 Toyota Corolla, Kia Shuma, Honda Civic etc.
Some days ago, a neighbour needed to by a "clean" Nigerian Used 2002-2006 Mercedes Benz C Class and being more experienced than him, we set out to check out the ones for sale.
First was a Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor (the brainbox is attached just beside the Engine). This one has a Turbo (Kompressor) but after gathering information here on Nairaland, I advised him not to buy it but go for a V6 model (C240- 2.6LV6, C280 - 3.0V6, C320- 3.2V6).
We saw a 2004 C230 but before we went back, someone bought it.
Now, we have seen a C240(I had seen it earlier and took days to ask questions and the Mechanic is open enough to tell me the issues with that particular car - lower control arm, A/C not working, engine oil shorting though not smoking, two back shocks getting weak, several faults in the dash- ABS, Etc. The car just tells you what is wrong with it without scan. The car moves fine and the gear selects well.
I told my neighbor what he has to spend to bring the machine back to standard, but for now, what he must fix when he buys the car is to change the four tires and probably oil servicing.
I tell you, Mercedes Benz should not be compared with other cars because they are in a class of its self. The cornering, balance, "movement"- though C240 is underpowered unlike the C320s, comfort, A/C (their A/C na cold room and cools faster than most cars), and on.
I asked the prices of the parts, which lasts thrice than average parts of other car brands but expensive.
Here are my findings of the prices of the parts of 2002 Mercedes Benz C240 (prices may diver from where you live):
Engine - 120,000 (" skeleton " or half-and-top costs about 90,000) Gear - 70,000 Lower control arm …8,000 2 front shock absorbers - 24000 2 back shock absorbers - 12,000 Front and back brake changes - 7,000
Give and take, he would spend about 250,000 Naira to fix all the car's wahala (new engine, eventually, etc) and the owner is offering it at 1million Naira (asking price).
Oil- Manufacturer recommends Mobil 1 but my customer who uses 2007 C230 uses Total Quartz 7000
Pls, is there anything else he should look out for before he makes payment. Left to the guy, anything "Benz" just de push am but I told him to consider many factors before buying a car. The money and time to be spent makes this to be not a wise decision Look for a very good example and buy sir to save you the stress. |

mumayo: please I need expert opinion. my Mitsubishi Chariot (GDI) suddenly stopped after a sound while on motion. called my mechanic who informed me that the Timing belt has cut and that I have to buy a new engine. please is this in line because the price he's quoting for a tokunbo engine don weak me your car;s engine is an interference engine (meaning if timing belts cut, the valves will hit the piston) I would strong suggest you replace, due to lack of competent mechanics. I would suggest though you reach out to Radautoworks on this forum. |

seyimii: Please, can mitsubishi space wagon gdi engine work with the intank fuel pump only after disconnecting the secondary pump on top of the engine. My mechanic said this is possible but i believe there will be inefficiency in the running of the engine. Bad idea. Internal pump fuel pump pressure is inadequate for the nozzles |

survivex: Dear motor Guru,
My MdX 2007 sometimes shows check transmission mostly when I am reversing and there will be a flashing of the D- sign on the dash.
I check the transmission fluid and is a little low at the bottom of the lower dip sign instead of in between. So I asked a friend for his scanner and did a quick scan and it showed a code about transmission range switch open or short circuited.
Although when this error shows up, the car still drives smoothly without any slip, noise or drag. I don't just like to see any yellow sign on my dash. Please what can I do to fix this. Thanks get an electrician/tech to correct this problem and you are good to go |

RealDannie: Hey Boss,
I'll like to know the price range of the 02 sensor because my car is consuming much fuel, got the code 1 fixed and the panel beater said I should not worry about the code 2 but I noticed that I use more fuel than usual.
Please advise. when last did you perform a tuneup( spearkplug change, air filter etc) also when scanning , check and post short term fuel trims(STFT) and long term fuel trims(LTFT) here |

Mrford: Moto guru, weldone sire
Your candid advice is needed here. Which would you advice a first time user between 2006 and above Honda civic, City, and Toyota corrola. In terms of Realiablity, comfort, and affordability
Budget is 1.5 to 1.8 your best bet would have been a Toyota Corolla, Personally i see not much difference btw a 2005 and a 2006( both have drive by wire throttle) so a budget of 1.8 should comfortably get you a 2005 Toyota Corolla |

oluwaleokey: I got a naija used car but previous owner uses 20w-50 but changes often As directed, i opened the engine oil cover to ascertain the level of Sludge in the engine (i dont know if it works this way) however find attached the pic.
I intend to use total quartz 9000 5w-40 for some time instead of straight 5w-30 due to what has been said. Please recommend Cc Motorguru Bigkendo This is very tricky. The pic shown is a huge precursor to engine sludge. Before you perform engine oil change from the 20w50, get a mechanic to open the valve cover for inspection. if sludge is present, please stick to the 20w50 if no sludge, try mineral (or syntheitc blend ) of the 5w40, and monitor oil consumption of engine if no consumption present, move up to 5w-30 |

toys2seven: Please house. I'm thinking of getting either a Volkswagen Passat 2006 or Toyota Corolla 2001/2 (both Nigerian used) but the Toyota is more expensive than the VW. Is it safe to go for the VW or to beef up my budget and go for the Toyota.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers! there is a reason why the Corolla is more expensive. Sir, please go for the Corolla. Thank me later. |

amywonda: Changed gasket of my Infiniti vq35de engine and it went off again on my first cross country Trip, do you reckon I change engines or is it something I should fix again? It's aluminium head and aluminium block there is a possibility the cylinder head is warped, hence you may be loosing pressure. you may need to perform pressure test on all cylinders, or in the worst case change engine. |
