Scan it and post codes here. Most times, the issue is the knock sensor or tps issue. But still run a scan and post codes so we can better advice you.

one sure thing about failed knock sensors/ knock sensor circuits is the very obvious harsh shifting. @ Obajmedia, do you experience harsh shifting?

Hello guys, pls my Lexus rx300 is not shifting to the 4th gear. I have changed the ATF but no difference. Pls what can I do about it? Thanks
Location lagos

Is your thermostat still installed?

Does your temperature gauge reach the middle at all (or does it ever move from the rest position)?

Usually, 4th gear will not engage in this transmission until the coolant temperature has reached a threshold (usually over 60 deg. C )

Most importantly, perform a scan on the vehicle and post the codes here, or on this thread:

one sch of thought says it overheats the gearbox

Nice having you here sir

The thing is that most of these practices will result to your exact sentiment: overheating of your transmission. and nothing kills a transmission faster than that as it leads to accelerated ATF degradation (burnt fluid)

Honda city 2007
Auto with cvt gear.

Issue. Car has been parked for over a month. Prior to parking, car had no issue.
Tried to start car two days ago but realised the battery was flat.
Tried to jump-start. Car started, ran for about 10 seconds and went off. All efforts to restart proved abortive.
Bought another battery and tried again but car won't start.
No check engine light.
Replaced all coils and plugs. There is spark on all plugs when tested.
Fuel pump hums as should and fuel flowed out of the fuel line when opened. Fuel pressure okay as per what I saw.
The replacement plugs got wet after periods of cranking and were dried and brushed clean and reinstalled.
Hand held scanner showed the rpm to be about 200rpm during cranking.
I don't know what else to do. I have called a mechanic who said that there may be low compression. This engine has 95000km on the odo.
Is this possible at this mileage?
What should I look out for?

Check all fuses at engine bay area. Especially IGN1 and IGN 2 fuses.

Car Talk / 5 Things You Should NEVER Do With Automatic Transmission Cars by MotorGuru: 10:32am On Aug 21, 2019
Automatic transmission is a torque multiplication device that is attached to your car's engine, which enables your car to shift gears automatically with little or no driver input. it is different from manual transmission in that there is no need for a pedal operated clutch. this makes your vehicle (if equipped with one ) to be very easy to drive especially in traffic jams. The ease it provides makes it very complex in its design and operation and if used incorrectly, can be easily damaged and can cost a lot of money( in some cases hundreds of thousands of Naira) to repair or replace.

The following are some key driving tips that will help keep your automatic transmission in good condition:

1.Only change from Drive to Reverse and vice versa at a complete standstill: Always ensure your vehicle comes to a complete stop before going from drive to reverse or vice versa. Shifting from reverse to drive, or vice-versa, while the car is still moving can cause increased stresses to the drive-train constant velocity joints which can lead to breakage/damage. This can also cause damage to the transmission wet clutches/ brake bands which can be a very expensive repair.so be patient and learn to use your brakes properly to stop your car.

2. Only shift to Park when you’ve come to a complete stop: You can damage or break the locking pin and the pawl mechanism that’s used to ensure your transmission is properly engaged in park. repairing this may be very costly.

3. Don't put your gear in neutral in a holdup/ stoplight : Yes i know, you will say i need to save fuel, right? No it doesn't. Your RPM actually fluctuates and, in some cases, rises when you shift from Drive to Neutral. Not only does this not help you save fuel, but the fluctuation in RPM also stresses the bands and clutch plates in your transmission, which, over time, will wear them out.

4. Putting your car gear in 'L' when stuck in a muddy place: This is bad practice, as L means your car starts from gear 1, and gear 1 gives a high torque condition which will cause spinning of your driving wheels and in severe cases overheat your transmission (Heat is a major killer of automatic transmission!)In such situation , engage your transmission in '2' so that your car can start in(or immediately shift into)2nd gear and remain in that gear until you are out of the situation.

5. Launching your automatic car by revving in Neutral and shifting to Drive: Hmm. For the awon Jason Staham (Transporter) that will put their transmission in Neutral, hold down the accelerator, then shift to Drive. This is very bad practice as this subjects the clutches and bands in these cars' transmissions are placed under huge amounts of mechanical stress due to the abrupt mashing of a stationary clutch plate with an engine that has been revved too high. this over time will wear your transmission and may call for a rebuild/ replacement sooner than expected.

You may be needing a tune up.

I would advise you scan the car, even if your check engine light is not on (just incase wink )

for a tune up we will be talking spark plug replacement, engine air filter replacement, checking of all engine fluids, gauging tire pressure, etc.

For a first time car user which is a better buy based on maintenance and availability of spare parts sir
1.) Nigerian used 2003 Toyota Rave 4?
2.) Nigerian used Acura MDX 2007/2008/2009?
I could have considered a corolla but it’s not spacious enough for my work and it’s a target for thieves.
Any better sir suggestions? Thanks

the 2003 Rav4 is more maintenace friendly and affordable to run.

But ensure that it does not have transmission related issues
also ensure your temperature gauge works fine

Well done boss! I have this Avensis 07 that works seamlessly when in reverse gear, but act as if in neutral when put in Drive. It won't engage until I rev the engine, but works perfectly once it has overcome inertia. The only exemption to this anomaly happens when the car is first started; it works well. I have changed gear filter & ATF, but without much difference.

Scan your car for transmission related codes.
the pressure control solenoid in your valvebody is acting up. most likely due to debris in your valvebody causing a sticky valve.

Not bad considering the kind of junk fuel we have in Nigeria smiley

I just got a Toyota corolla 2007 model last year. Initially o used conventional Mobil oil. I stitched to Mobil synthetic this year and have not serviced in 6 months. The car is jerking a bit and i got our company driver to check, he says i may have to change the plugs and service... Some of my friends says Synthetic oil is not necessary for Older, high mileage cars... my car is about 135k.... what do you think please ?

Is your check engine light on?
take your vehicle for a scan and post snapshot of live data.

synthetic oil is good for old and high mileage engines that has not been previously abused.

Catalyst is losing its capacity to ensure exhaust gases are rid of NOx emmisions

solutions:

1. Replace catalyst with a new unit (expensive)
2. Use an Oxygen sensor apdator to fool the ECU (cheapest)
3. gut out catalyst (AND DO NOT PUT WIRE GAUZE INSIDE). Engine will sound louder

Please dear Nairaland Car Gurus,

I need your candid and genuine advice. I'M A LADY. Which of the two ( 2003 Nigerian used corolla or TOKUNBO 2002 corolla )do I go for AS A FIRST CAR? Considering the nature of our roads, durability, fuel economy, and sleekness embarassed embarassed
I think both of them are of the same price.

Thanks

Personally i would go for the 2003 Nigerian used Corolla. Reasons? Better engines with higher HP output( 02 models are usually plagued with oil consumption issues), more refined, Has 4 speed auto gearbox as against the 3 speed in the 02 model and much better resale value.

Please get a comprehensive PPI inspection before purchase.

Dear Motor Guru,
I just scanned my 2003 Toyota 4Runner 4.7L V8 and got the following codes: P0330 and P0420.
Please what could have triggered them and what is possible solution. Thanks n anticipation of your response.

for code 1, it is a knock sensor code.It is very likely the wiring to that sensor is compromised. Get a sound mech to inpect and check the connection to the sensor(this is not a DIY job, due to the location of the sensors).

for code 2, it is a catalyst efficiency code. your catalyst is on its way out. or your Post cat O2 sensor. If O2 sensor is ok, use a o2 sensor adaptor to fool your ECU.

If it was sold at an auction site, what's the primary and secondary loss on the vehicle?

If its nothing serious there's a very high likelihood the 2AZ engine in that car is already having oil shortage issues...

This is where comprehensive VIN check is important.
Most Camrys (in the US) that had this defect were recalled and their piston rings/pistons were replaced under warranty.
If this vehicle was recalled and piston rings were replaced under warranty, then the owner has nothing to fear.

please guide a brother so happiness of buying a car wont turn to a torn in the flesh.

There is a reason why the Camry is the Top selling sedan in the US....
