BlackBerry Ltd said on Thursday its popular messaging system BBM, or BlackBerry Messenger, would now be open to those using the Windows phone platform, a move that potentially makes the messaging service more appealing to its enterprise clients.

BlackBerry, which is seeking to reinvent itself as a more software and services driven company as its smartphone market share has dwindled, has been lately touting new BBM features in a bid to make it a more viable messaging tool for clients such as corporations and government agencies that are on the lookout for a secure messaging service.

The company, last year, opened the service to phones powered by Google Inc's wildly popular Android operating system and Apple's iOS platform. The rollout to the Windows phone platform means the service is now available on all major smartphone platforms, making it a more viable option for those clients that are considering using it as a communication tool.

BBM was a pioneering mobile-messaging service, but its user base has failed to keep pace with those of WhatsApp and other rivals, in part because BlackBerry had long refused to open the program to users on other platforms.

While the messaging service still has over 85 million active users, BlackBerry in a bid to boost its relevance and cater to the needs of its core enterprise audience is now marketing it as a secure communications tool for government agencies and regulated sectors, such as financial services.

Last month, BlackBerry began to roll out BBM Protected, a secure messaging service tailored specifically to the needs of companies in regulated sectors.

The move is part of a broader push that has also seen BlackBerry widen its device management capabilities to include devices that are powered by the Android, iOS, and Windows platforms.

A move to bring BBM to desktops is still a ways off.

"I can't tell you whether we are going to do BBM on desktop.

That is a collaboration we have to have between us and Microsoft and I wouldn't be able to comment on that, because we certainly have the desire, but between that and getting it done there is still a gap," said BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen, in an interview with Reuters earlier this week.

Earlier this year, Chen had said that BlackBerry was looking into the possibility of bringing BBM to desktop computers, thus allowing employees of companies and government agencies to go mobile on group chats started on their computers without missing a beat.

BlackBerry has announced that it would release the BBM app for Windows Phone to general public next week. The BBM beta app for the Windows Phone platform got 10,000 signups within 24 hours after the registrations began earlier this month, says BlackBerry. BBM app for the beta testers went live in the Windows Phone Store last week.

The Windows Phone version has BBM features such as Feeds, Contacts and Chat. Since BlackBerry started beta testing, it has been updating the app with new features and fixing bugs after hearing feedback from the users. Earlier this week the app got updated with transparent live tile, new UI for the picture preview window, option for adding captions to images you’re sharing, see the number of participants in a group and speed improvements.

Citizens of Africa's most populous nation could not buy goods directly from foreign merchants before the launch by PayPal, the payments unit of online auctioneer eBay Inc .

"We have seen great uptake by Nigerians ... in terms of coverage," Malvina Goldfeld, PayPal's head of business development for sub Saharan Africa, said in Lagos on Tuesday.

PayPal entered Nigeria and 10 other nations last month, providing online payment alternatives for consumers via mobile phones or PCs in markets often blighted by financial fraud. The new markets bring the number of countries PayPal serves to 203.

Goldfeld said that Paypal secured a few deals with electronics suppliers in China and Dubai ahead of its launch and that it had partnered with Nigerian lender First Bank , which has more than 10.5 million customers. Electronics and fashion PayPal launched its platform in South Africa four years ago, Kenya last year and now Nigeria, Goldfeld said, giving the company access to shoppers across 40 sub-saharan African countries.

Goldfeld said the biggest interest has been in products from the United States, Britain and China, adding: "People are buying everything ... (but) there's definitely a concentration in electronics and fashion."

Online retailer Jumia told Reuters in April it had 100,000 Nigerian customer accounts and sales were increasing by 15 percent a month. However, worries over internet security and online fraud have held back e-commerce growth in Nigeria, where 63 million people have active internet data subscriptions but only 1 percent of them make online transactions, First Bank said, noting that online purchases are expected to reach $1 billion this year.

Though challenges remain - including abysmal infrastructure, port delays, other supply chain woes and the task of persuading shoppers to trust websites with their bank details - Goldfeld says PayPal's reach will help to speed improvements.

"A lot of the merchants that we work with ... already ship to Nigeria. I think that the growth of e-commerce will push the logistics customers to up their game," she said.

Apple's next iPhone device, expected to be called the iPhone 6, has once again been tipped to launch on September 19 - this time thanks to a leaked promotional flyer from China. The leaked image of the alleged iPhone 6 flyer was picked up by GSM Insider from a Chinese user's Weibo account, showing the September 19 launch day alongside purported pricing of both the models.

According to the leaked flyer, the rumoured 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will come at CNY 5,288 (roughly Rs. 51,000), while the alleged 5.5-inch model will be available at CNY 6,288 (roughly Rs. 61,000). If true, this would also imply the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (32GB) is cheaper than the current 4-inch iPhone 5s (16GB) - which costs CNY 5,300.

Recent reports, in-line with the current, had suggested the same CNY 5,288 pricing for the unannounced 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (32GB). Meanwhile, the alleged 5.5-inch iPhone 6 (16GB) was said to be priced at CNY 5,998 (roughly Rs. 57,600).

The images of the alleged iPhone 6 on the purported promotional flyer corroborate what's has been widely expected based on earlier leaks, that the next iPhone will come with curved edges and will be a major departure from the company's current industrial design on existing iPhone models.

However, it is yet to be seen whether Apple will do away with its current straight-edge design seen on the iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. Notably, the September 19 launch date tipped by the leaked flyer goes well with Apple's traditional start sale strategy of any new iPhone model; which begins on a Friday to capture the weekend crowd. Previous leaks (including a purported internal communication from a German telecom carrier) had indicated a launch date of September 19.

Contradicting the current launch date, an earlier report suggested a new launch date for the next iPhone from Apple, as well as the name of the anticipated larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant - iPhone Air. The report citing industry sources claimed Apple would unveil the iPhone 6 on September 15 (which seemed a little fishy), which falls on a Monday, while retail availability would begin on September 25, which falls on a Thursday.

Last week, amidst reports about mass production of the alleged 4.7-inch successor to the wildly popular iPhone 5 series of smartphones to begin in July, we were treated with a new case listing purportedly tipped the design of the unannounced smaller iPhone 6 in an Amazon online retail listing.

Despite having completed its £4.6 billion acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services business in April, Microsoft is expanding Nokia’s range of low-cost Android-based devices with the launch of a new smartphone.

Nokia launched its first mobile phone running Google’s Android software, the Nokia X, in February. Somewhat confusingly, Nokia’s senior vice president and former CEO Stephen Elop said the device was about “introducing the next billion people to Microsoft”.

Microsoft admitted at the time that the move was one of Nokia’s tactics that it was “a little less excited about”, and several commentators speculated that the line would be discontinued once the acquisition went through.

However, Microsoft has today announced the launch of the Nokia X2, reiterating the claim that it will serve as “a gateway to Microsoft services”, driving uptake of Outlook.com, Skype and OneDrive.

At a suggested retail price of €99 (£79), the Nokia X2 is designed to attract a “new generation” of smartphone buyers. It has 4.3-inch display and runs a customised version of Android that emulates Windows Phone’s tile-based interface.

Featuring a 1.2Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM, the X2 it is nowhere near as powerful as Nokia’s Windows Phone-based Lumia devices. However, it is a step up from the original X, which had a 1Ghz processor.

“The Nokia X family is going from strength to strength, with the Nokia X smartphone achieving top-selling status in Pakistan, Russia, Kenya and Nigeria, while earning the third-best-selling smartphone spot in India,” said Timo Toikkanen, head of Mobile Phones, Microsoft Devices Group.

“The Nokia X2 elevates the Nokia X experience with a stellar new design, ease of use and new Microsoft experiences. We’re proud to continue to bring smartphone innovation to lower and lower price points.”

The Nokia X2 will be available at launch in glossy orange, black and green, with glossy yellow, white and matte dark grey coming later to the lineup. It will be available initially as a dual-SIM device and will begin rolling out globally in July 2014.

Samsung has unveiled a prototype of its 85inch bendable Television at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

The Korean Giants has not announced plans to put the television on sale but 85in (216cm) prototype that allows the curvature of its screen to be adjusted by remote control.

The new technology means the television can be bent to accommodate the total number of people watching the television.

Samsung has unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2, details of the Galaxy Camera 2 was unveiled at a pre-CES announcement. According to Samsung the the Galaxy Camera 2 is the sequel to Samsung’s first Android powered camera device, and it is much better and improved.

Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 features a quad-core 1.6GHz Qualcomm processor, 2GB of RAM, a 2,000mAh battery, Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean mobile operating system and 8GB of internal storage, although Samsung said that only 2.8GB of this will be accessible by the user. Barely 3 months ago, Apple made its new mobile OS “The iOS 7″ public. It came alongside its new smartphones iPhone 5c, 5S and was latter made available for compatible devices as a free upgrade. It is no longer news that iOS7 came with a brand new user experience ranging from interface, features etc.

Ever since its release, iOS lovers who had always enjoyed the liberty of jailbreaking their Apple device have been out of luck trying the iOS 7 Jailbreak. Some might be wondering “ What is jailbreak?"

Jailbreaking your iOS device simply means installing a small program that will remove restrictions placed in the default software. A jailbroken device will be able to install apps and extensions (themes, tweaks etc) not approved by Apple (just like rooting your Android device or Hacking your symbian OS back then ).

Jailbreaking simply enables you to exploit and do more with your device, nothing is taken away. That is freedom! I love freedom and I guess u do.

Alas! It was indeed a Xmas Miracle on Sunday morning, a group known as the Evad3rs Team released the iOS 7.x untethered jailbreak tool called Evasi0n7 which is compatible with all iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, iPad mini running on flavours of iOS 7 viz iOS 7.0.1, iOS 7.0.2, iOS 7.0.3, iOS 7.0.4 (am most likely iOS 7.1 beta).

Although, Evasi0n7 has already struck some hurdles, which includes its incompatibility with some software available in Cydia. (Cydia is the preferred app store for jailbroken Apple devices) The whole jailbreaking process is easy and takes just 5mins but be “careful” when jailbreaking your device and also make sure you backup your device before embarking on such trip.

In case you've missed the news, the dropped MeeGo/Symbian support and app publishing means developers will be no longer capable of pushing new apps or updates in the Ovi Store. They will continue to receive revenue from their apps, of course, and all currently available apps in the Store will remain available for download.

So, if you are interested the Ovi Store is still open and your device isn't rendered worthless just yet. But maybe, just maybe, it's about time you jumped ship.

After the official roll out of Blackberry on non – blackberry devices (iOS and Androids) in October this year, Blackberry went ahead to succesfully release new features in November – BBM channels for BB10 and BBOS.

National telecoms operator, Globacom has introduced a new and unique Bumpa tariff plan which gives its prepaid subscribers a robust value of 200% instant bonus on every recharge. Subscribers can use the bonus to text or call any network across the country and to browse the internet.

E-Scan has designed a mobile security and antivirus
application that would enable users of Android mobile
phones and tablets to retrieve information about their
phones when stolen. The application, tagged, ‘E-Scan
Mobile Security for Android’, will be launched on Thursday
in Lagos. The company said the application would work for
android 2.2 and above with minimum disk space of 2.4MB.

“The anti-theft feature provides security and ensures
complete protection to your hone from nay unauthorized
access on the event if your phone device is lost or stolen.
