these topics is not brief cos of it broad scope,

I have a dream of being automobile designer and builder some day, and with that in mind, I am not a Mechanic you see in Nigerian street, why cos i know a lot about your systems which 95 percent of our Mechanics focus most on just a fraction of the system,

I know at least the major system that your car is composed of and how there work with each other, traction control system, engine management, body, electrical system, brake system and HVAC systems, two more is transmission system and seat

The first thing first, how did you know your car consumes more fuel than usual?

Some who knows their car uses instinct to know, but I will lecture you on physical inspection and examination test you can perform without tools just using your finger tip or tissue paper which will give you an Intel of your car fuel consumption detail,

You can use your finger tip, or tissue paper,

so head to your car tail pipe and insert your finger into the tail pipe walls, drag your finger back and forth, same goes with holding your tissue papers with your fingers to do the same,

if it's black sooth

, yes your car drinks more fuel, if It's sticky your car also have engine problems such as too much oil burning, which means your car engine will be working more to keep up the power output transmitted to your transmission and tires.
But if it's brownish or faint brown or no stain, your car is not only running fine but your car engine is healthy as horse.

Many Nigerian cars gets their catalytic converter aka indomi chopped off by car dealers & many by road side Mechanics in attempt to give the engine a breathing space, like most of your commercial cars, peace, telex, you name it, and yet the fuel consumption isn't bad, now I got lot you scratching your head, cos anything that reduces your car emissions reduces your car fuel consumption, while some sale it to make some decent cash, still those cars still don't run too much on fuel which is called rich condition

Your catalytic converters often get worn out after 170000 mile, which in accordance with western emission control, it's not idealistic to buy used catalytic converter cos you can't tell if it's out of active period,
Your catalytic converters play crucial role that makes it expensive such as converting the unburned carbon monoxide into harmless gas, reduce your car engine sound as much improve your car fuel consumption,

Some road side body work Mechanics do fill the exhaust muffler with thread wires to create the effects which your catalytic converters creates but this does work but it's dangerous cos they could suffocate your car engine which will make your engine combustion components wear out faster, leading you to buy another engine sooner than later.

But that's just one part of the major components that contribute to your fuel economy,
Aside this, there are lot of factors that can make your car drinks fuel as best described by Nigerian car owner,

Such as bad ignition sparks plugs, air intake filter, dirty or bad injectors, bad 02 sensors, bad map sensor, bad throttle body, worn out oil control piston rings, wrong tires, low pressure tires, uncallibrated throttle body and bad ECM

So in order to discover the actual culprit is what makes a prerequisite set knowledge of how these systems comes to play along with each other, the most valuable asset in automobile Mechanics.

My encounter with European brand cars changed my perception about mechanics, although some of them are money pits like bmw and some are terrible engineering prior to hectic maintenance such as Ford and other brands,

Ford don't necessarily build terrible cars, their parts last 4 times compared to Toyota just as vw parts last 3 times compared to Japanese automaker cars parts,

Now you think you are buying cheaper parts in Japanese models, but it get ruined in no time, and thats bad engineering in my book,

In the context of this thread, Nigerian mechanics have phobia for American cars as much as European cars, such Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler mustang then Volkswagen Mercedes BMW Peugeot Renault and opel,

But my two major focus today is VW and Ford,

I have encountered these two brands and seriously especially Golf model from 2, 3, 4 which most Nigerians in general have phobia for golf mk 4, which tells me we have lots of lunatics in the field of motor fix in Nigeria,

Which i believe is due to lack of standard training and poor economic conditions as much as lack of basic education in Nigeria.

I tell you what? My two years experience with golf 4 has proven it more easy fix compared to vw golf 3.,

I trust this car more than I Trust myself, precisely 2.0 GTI edition from 2000 models, no disappointment in high way, fuel economy is excellent, i have never replaced mechanical parts for two years that I have been driving this car, aside, aside driver front shocks due to how low it is, I never converted the engine nor the electrical systems,

My question now is, why are Nigerians scared of this car? Most people call is electrical nightmare. But it's quite annoying cos the electrical systems are way easier compared to golf 3,

To cut all story short, stop converting your car systems, although you can convert the transmission into manual cos you have poor maintenance habits, but as for ac and electrical and engine, don't convert, yes you can swoop 2.0 engine with 1.6 on vw mk 4, cos the electrical systems match by 90 percent.

My regards on this is, you stand a chance of enjoying ford, vw or any European car, by not tampering with the system,

Most problems you will come across on this brands are sensors related and no trial and error is permitted,

Get it scanned, 3 to 5k is not two big, and fix it. And it's gone.

These cars don't mingle with low budget scantool, it takes 100k and above scanners to pull a decent amount of information out of tge ECU which will give you insight about what is going on with it.

Like golf 3, can endure replacement of most parts without scantool, such as ECU, Monottonics injector aka electric carburetor, cluster guage,

But you can't introduce used clusters guage into mk4, ecu, or throttle body without using computer to install it, that's where most if your nightmare starts. From.

Good average & bad. Someone who need a healthy car needs more of good internal components as well as the outlook that will be greater in numbers than bad and average.

One customer who contacted me prior to my previous thread on the need to contact us to save you from impending nightmare that comes after car purchase, well this test was carried on Toyota matrix 2004 model, on 6 August 2020 from 11:30AM to 1:30PM, as the sellers locks behind the car have no issue syndrome.

Even before hooking the car up with my computer, I could see trace of too much fuel consumption from the tail pipe,...

under utility check:
no headlamp,
bad wiper blades,
ac refrigerant leak, which at last bad compressor, the ac cools but it have leaks that can't be fixed, except replacing the compressor,
bad door that won't open,
rough idling which I know the cause, engine idles at 1100 rpm

The seller looked at me like I am a witch or something evil..

After hooking up my scanner, a lot was showing up, which I will share with you folks,
this is a nightmare that mare visual inspection or just a random mechanic will never detect, including pending transmission issues.. that might warrant replacing the entire transmission system.

For a car of N1.1M, that's a lot of money to purchase nightmare with.

I am certain lot of you are not out of this trap.. cos any buyer will not hesitate to pay cos the engine sounds nice, including my customer would have paid if I told him nothing is wrong.. but like I previously said, it's only the truth that can set you free,
