Rivers State Governorship Election and the Nation

The outcome of the case at the Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal nullifying the election of Nyesom Wike is very significant, not only for Rivers State, but for the whole of our nation. Now, I’m not going to analyse the legalities of the case or say whether or not the Tribunal is right or wrong to reach the verdict it did. I’ll leave that to the appeal process and the lawyers and the judges involved already and those yet to be involved. However, what I want to deal with here is the politics of it all.

Looked at from the prism of the political battle going on between Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amaechi, there are those who would say the judgment is a political attempt by the APC to claim Rivers State through the courts. In other word, they would be saying what the APC could not win via the ballot, they want to win through some questionable court process. While a parallel could be drawn with the Amaechi case about eight years ago which led to the Supreme Court giving him the governorship without him actually being on the ballot, the difference here is that we are talking two different political parties and a lot of bad blood and bad politics already.

As a matter of fact, in all honesty, you do not need to carry out any scientific poll to see that the PDP owns Rivers State politically, despite Amaechi’s attempt to tilt it to the APC. Not many people in the streets believe that APC actually won the governorship election. Indeed, whatever anyone says of Wike, his hold on the governorship election was quite obvious all over the state long before the election itself. Honestly, most Rivers State people today are not looking to see an APC government after any rerun election (if it happens); they are convinced that no matter how many times the election is held, Wike would win.

And that is the problem. We need to call on all parties to not act in desperation. Wike should appeal the decision and await the outcome. He remains the Governor until the appeal process is exhausted and must be given the respect his person and office deserve while that process is on. If it comes to a rerun, the APC should go round to do its homework and security must be provided all over the state to ensure that no party uses intimidation to keep members of one party from voting the candidate of their choice. Despite all we know about Wike, there’s noting that says the APC cannot win if it campaigns diligently and cashes in savvily on the advantage of being the party at the centre, including marshalling huge national material and human resources towards winning the election. However, what it cannot do is to use state institutions like the INEC and the security services under its control to “win” the election. It certainly must not be seen to be using the judiciary to illegitimately achieve the same purpose. That would be inviting Armageddon in Nigeria. It would be waking up the beast that we have intelligently tamed the moment President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat. As sad as it is, the regionally and ethnically poisoned nature of our politics means that any attempt for the APC to claim any state in the South-South today will be resisted fiercely by those traditional forces that believe the South-South is solidly PDP. Desperation could tilt this into seriously dangerous territory.

I therefore call on President Muhammau Buhari, Rotimi Amaechi, Dakuku Peterside and Nyesom Wike to consider the nation above their own personal interest in this matter. They must show that they truly respect the people by allowing the rule of law to prevail. Every Nigerian would be watching what happens in Rivers State keenly and the core thing here is that violence must not be allowed to mar the issue going forward from here. If that happens, the Nigerian people will hold these men individually and collectively responsible.

Gyms will not install camera in a locker room and if they did the resolution will not be so sharp and neither will the placement be directed at a dressing area of the room....it might be placed at entrance for instance to monitor gender separation and access.
