koruji: Although these areas of Ibadan could be much improved, this parts are what would be refered to in many regions of the world as "Old City". This part of ancient cities tend to retain their look and feel from ancient time, although major upgrades and prevention of blight are usually implemented.Another part of the city

http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2012/may/08/national-08-05-2012-0012.html ACN strongman leads 1,000 to Idanre LP By RAZAQ BAMIDELE Tuesday, May 08 , 2012 Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Membership of the ruling Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State increased over the weekend when over 1000 members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Idanre defected to the LP, even as the state Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, was honoured by the youths in the town. The defectors were led by a prominent member of the ACN, Smart Aribigbala, a.k.a Y2k. The Chief of Staff to the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Kola Ademujimi and the Chairman of LP in Idanre, Mr. Kola Akinboyejo, a.k.a Hero, received the new members to the fold of the ruling party. Addressing the new members, the chief of staff said they had taken a good decision, adding that they could not have chosen a better time to join the winning party. He said with the new set of defectors, opposition was as good as dead in the area because, according to him, it had become a taboo in the area to claim membership of a party other than the LP. “It is the wisest decision you can ever take at this time to come to the right place and LP is the place. I don’t expect that anybody in this locality will still be comfortable as opposition member despite the many caring-heart programmes of Mr. Governor that we are enjoying in this area. “You have taken the right step and I congratulate you for this because by this decision, you have demonstrated that you appreciate the kind gestures of the governor and his many programmes in this area. I implore you to be loyal to the party and ensure continuity of the good works of the government.” Also welcoming the new members, Akinboyejo, the party chairman in Idanre, said with the defection of the new members, it had been proven beyond doubt that the LP was in total control in the area. He said any opposition party looking for votes in Idanre and its environs would be embarking on a fruitless voyage. “ What this exercise of today implies is that the entire Idanre people have declared for the LP and I can assure you that in line with the LP’s family principle, there is no discrimination or favouritism; we are all members of the same large family and we will all be treated equally no matter how late you joined the party,” Hero said. Meanwhile, Youths in Idanre at the weekend honoured the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Mr Kayode Akinmade, who was treated to a lavish reception. The youths hinged their decision on what they described as the good and quality representation he has been giving them as a member of the state executive team. |

http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/okore-receives-fulbright-award Okore receives Fulbright Award The North Park University Associate Professor will teach in the University of Lagos and work on environmental art projects Article | May 3, 2012 - 10:44pm | By Nkechi Opurum Nnenna Okore’s art is inspired by the use of found objects Nnenna Okore, an Associate Professor and Art Department Chair at the North Park University, has been named a Fulbright Scholar. Okore, a sculptor, whose niche is environmental art, uses materials such as newspapers, wax, cloth, rope, clay, and sticks in her art. The Fulbright Programme was established in 1946, and is the largest U.S. international exchange programme offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Okore plans to use her Fulbright Scholarship to teach artists how to use discarded materials to create works of art and raise attention for environmental restoration in Nigeria. "It's always been my dream to go back and teach in one of their universities, and share what I've learned here with faculty and students," she said. "There isn't an effective way of recycling in Nigeria and many artists have tried including recycled materials in their work. But generally, the culture does not accept such works as genuine art because recycled materials are used. "Part of my aim is to begin to bring some authenticity to the use of our environment, and the use of things that are byproducts of that environment, whether social, physical, or consumer environment. We should be thinking of ways to recycle things back into our art and into our daily lives." She plans to open a studio in Lagos where she will collaborate with local students and artists in creating art from recycled materials, raise attention for recycling and environmental restoration, and discuss future art collaborations involving Nigerian institutions and the University. Okore will also design and teach a course in Environmental Art at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and debut her works at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos, beginning in May 2013.

http://tribune.com.ng/sun/component/content/article/105-crime-features/7108-islamic-cleric-nabbed-in-ogun-for-car-stealing Islamic cleric nabbed in Ogun for car stealing | Print | E-mail Written by Oluwatoyin Malik and Kemi Adetunji Sunday, 29 April 2012 Share [The recoverd Honda accord car (right) and the Toyota camry bought for N200,000 by Lukman. Inset is the photograph of the suspects, Lateef (left) and Lukman.] IN Isale Abetu area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, the residents knew 28-year-old Lukman Gbolagade as an Islamic cleric. Popularly known as Alfa, he had clients who used to approach him with their problems. In return, he would pray for them and prepare talisman that he thought would ameliorate their problems spiritually. What was unknown to them however was the fact that Lukmon was also into an undisclosed business – car theft. He was the head of a gang that usually visited Ibadan in Oyo State to steal cars with master keys where they were parked, only to change the colour and engraved glasses and resell to others; until his cup got full last Sunday when he was arrested by anti-robbery policemen led by Inspector Charles Akpe from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Abeokuta. According to information gathered by Sunday Tribune, Lukman was exposed by the last car he stole from Odo Ona Elewe area of Ibadan, a Honda Accord car popularly called Honda Allah with registration number EA 250 LSR. The owner of the car, one Seyi Oyebisi had given the car to his mechanic for engine repair. The mechanic was reported to have parked the car in his house on April 16 after working on it, with the intention of test-driving it the following day. He was however shocked the following morning when he saw an empty space where he parked the car the previous night. Not only had the Honda Allah disappeared, the documents of a Mercedes V-booth car and N150,000 kept in the car were taken with it. Unknown to Lukman, his activities were being noted as he worked on the stolen car to change its back windscreen and side glasses, and it was this information that was given to the police that eventually led to his arrest. According to a police source who spoke with Sunday Tribune, “anti-robbery policemen received an information on Sunday April 22 at about 7.30p.m. that some people brought an Honda Accord car to Isale Abetu area of Abeokuta and effected a change in its glasses the previous day. The suspect mentioned was traced to Mallo Petrol Station at Isale Ake area and the police met him with two others in a white Toyota Camry saloon car. On sighting the police, one of them fled while two others were arrested. Lukman was taken to his house where the Honda Accord car was recovered. On further interrogation, we discovered that the Camry car and another Honda Accord (Bulldog)were also stolen. It was the documents of the Honda Allah car that were used to trace the owner in Ibadan.” Confessing to his crime, Lukman, an Ibadan indigene told Sunday Tribune that he started car theft about a year ago after he was introduced to the crime by one Razak. “It was Razak who got me a master key and also introduced me to one Labwa. I invited my friends, Adam and Lateef Adio. My first job was a Nissan Sunny stolen from Molete area in Ibadan. I went with Adam amd we sold it for N50,000. The second one was the Honda Bulldog taken from Odo Ona area. That one was given to Lateef. The third one was the Honda Allah stolen from Challenge area of Ibadan. I got the Toyota Camry from another gang which specialised in stealing posh cars. I paid them N200,000 for it and also gave them N25,000 for re-painting it from grey to white colour.” However, the second suspect denied being a member of Lukman’s group, saying that he only knew him as a colleague in religion since he was also an Alfa. “He told me he had a brother selling cars and I deposited N50,000 with him. He later brought Nissan Sunny but I rejected it. I added N50,000 to the initial one, making N100,000. He brought the Honda Bulldog which I also rejected but he told me to manage it. I asked for the plate number and he promised to bring it. The Honda car later broke down and when I was asked to bring N150,000 for repair, I left it at mechanic workshop. He told me he wanted to buy Toyota Camry (Big Daddy) and called me when he got it. When he brought the Honda Allah, he showed me and said he needed to change the glasses. I helped him contact someone who did it for him. I never knew it was a stolen car. “Last Sunday, I saw him at Isale Ake area and joined him. That was how I was arrested by the police. I never followed him on any of his operation and I did not know he was into such crime”. Confirming the story, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, ASP Muyiwa Adejobi said that the suspects had been transferred from Adatan Police Station to the State CID for further interrogation. He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state would give appropriate directive if there would be need to transfer the case to the venue of crime.

http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/03/29/nigeria-kidnap-idINDEE82S0FM20120329 Nigeria (Yoruba) kidnappers release UAE man, 7 arrested By Joe Brock ABUJA | Thu Mar 29, 2012 11:21pm IST (Reuters) - A Nigerian criminal gang released a United Arab Emirates man on March 19 in the southern town of Ibadan after holding him for 60 days, the state security services (SSS) said on Thursday, adding that seven men - but not the gang leaders - had been arrested. The kidnappers tricked Mohammed Khamis al Ali into coming to Nigeria on January 20 to carry out a business deal in the southern commercial hub Lagos, the SSS said. He was seized and held in a remote village in nearby Osun state for 2 months. Nigeria has become infamous for a type of fraud called "419 scams", after the number in the penal code. These often take the form of emails asking for a business partner or bank details, or promising vast riches in return for a small up-front fee. Kidnapping is another major enterprise in Africa's second biggest economy, the vast majority of victims being Nigerian. Snatching foreigners in the oil producing Niger Delta has also been common in recent years, though there has been a sharp reduction since an amnesty for militants in 2009. Most kidnap victims were released after payment of a ransom. "(Al Ali) was lured to visit Nigeria for a phantom business transaction by a fake company, Finuche Investments, was abducted by a kidnap syndicate and held hostage for about 60 days," SSS spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar told reporters. Ogar said the seven men arrested were guarding al Ali but the masterminds were still at large. The suspects who had been arrested stood behind Ogar as she spoke, heads bowed, some in tears. When questioned, they said they dumped al Ali in Ibadan after their bosses stopped contacting them with instructions about what to do with him. Neither Ogar nor the suspects mentioned payment of a ransom. Kidnappings apparently motivated by Islamist ideology rather than cash are an emerging trend in largely Muslim northern Nigeria, where the militant group Boko Haram is waging a low level insurgency against the central government. A Briton and an Italian seized in May last year were killed on March 8 before Nigerian and British special forces could rescue them, while a German seized in Kano, northern Nigeria's biggest city, in January is still missing. A group claiming to be from al Qaeda's north African wing posted a statement on the internet last week saying they were holding the German kidnapped in January. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/13773-suspected-kidnappers-arrested-in-ibadan Suspected kidnappers arrested in Ibadan | Print | E-mail Written by Adebayo Waheed Share Four people, including two cousins, have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a housewife, two children and a sales girl at Elebu area of Oluyole Estate extension, Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 16. The suspects, Adeleke Adebayo, Tope Edward Ogunsuyi, Busuyi Oyebanji, and Babatunde Oluwasanmi, were said to have kidnapped Mrs Adeniji Bisola and others from their residence at about 7.30 a.m. on sallah day. The state Police Commissioner, Baba Adida Bolanta, while addressing newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, said it was when the neighbours discovered that the people had been kidnapped that they informed the husband, who later informed policemen at the Oluyole Police Station. He said the husband, Mr Adeniji Busayo, who works and resides in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said he had received a telephone call from unknown persons that his wife, two children and the sales girl had been kidnapped. The police boss added that the suspected kidnappers had demanded from the husband N100 million as ransom before they could be released. According to him, police detectives immediately swung into action, visited the scene of the crime and with the tracker mechanism installed in the vehicle used, it was sighted at Plot 11, Road L, Olubadan Estate, Alakia. He said the residents— Mr and Mrs Adeleke Adebayo — were arrested and interrogated, adding that they confessed that it was one Tope Ogunsuyi, a friend of the Adelekes, who brought the vehicle there for safe-keeping. The police boss said that policemen were led to the principal suspects house at Ojurin-Akobo area of the state capital, where the victims were discovered and rescued. He said the suspects did not only kidnap the victims, they also ransacked the house and stole the sum of N215,000, ATM cards, cheque books and handsets. He added that the item recovered from the suspects were a Land Rover Discovery Jeep, an L-shaped silver colour pipe wrapped with handkerchief used as a gun, the victims’ jewelries, clothing and the children’s shoes and charms. |
^^^^^ Point of correction: Kidnapping was not introduced by Niger Delta militants. Kidnapping has always been in yorubaland going by the name gbomogbomo. Even the SW is not immune from current spate of kidnappings. Afterall they were the first to kidnap Igbos in their midst |
Ileke-IdI:Armed robbery is more dangerous. Results in death much more than kidnapping would. Armed robbery also prevents people from stepping outta their homes |
The puported kidnapping Of Lulu's mum is fake. They hid their mom somewhere so that Lulu will get sympathy/reprieve from govt for the looting of the NFA. Everything about the so-called kidnapping of the woman was shrouded in mystery. Firest they claimed the kidnappers were in Abia and now they claimed the woman was released in Enugu. How did the Abia kidnappers move the woman to Enugu with the VERY HEAVY Police presence now in the entire south east. When they realized that their gimmick and deception is not working, they released their mother from where they hid her. Lulu can manipulate all he likes, he must still go to jail for stealing and pillaging. LULU is not bigger than TAFA Balogun and Bode George. |
