You ignore kalu in Abia politics at your own peril; someone who has 80% of the touts in Abia under his pay role. PDP should not make the mistake of re-admitting him. He will only use and dump them. This is when we need Obasanjo, Kalu's mortal enemy, to step in and help send Kalu to his final sleep, politically speaking.

I am not able to see that there are Ekpeye people in Ogbia LGA of Bayelsa State. There is so much confu in the whole thing. However I remeber a friend of my dad's who was from Ogbia and an avowed Ijaw man. He speaks Igbo better than many Igbos and also has an Igbo middle name.

Rotational presidency is not based on tribe but on regions. Even if the president is Igbo (on account of his Ekepeyeness) from south south, it will not affect the presidency from the south east when the time comes.

Ekpeye is a language, a people, a culture and an ethnic kingdom in southeastern Nigeria.[1] The Ekpeye are usually included as a subgroup of the Igbo people on linguistic and cultural grounds.[2][3] They speak an Igboid language.[4][5][6] Ekpeye people living in the Ahoada and Ogba-Egbema areas of Rivers State in Nigeria were a population of 80,000 (1991 census), that has increased 63% to approximately 130,000, according to the 2006 census estimates.[citation needed]

When Obasanjo, Yaradua and Jonathan came to Igboland to campaign in 2006/07, Jonathan was reported to have informed the audience that his name is Ebele and that he was one of them (the audience). People did not take it seriously for two reasons:
1. Ebele could have meant something else in Ijaw
2. They probably thought he was playing the usual politics to win Igbo votes.

Why did this Nigerian kill his wife?

TUNDE FAGBENLE, tundefagbenle@aol.com

The ultimate horror of spousal abuse was brought home to me a couple of weeks ago when I received a call from a very dear cousin of mine, Bose.

advertisement

"Broda Tunde," she had begun on the phone, trying to find the right word with which to start. Then choosing to deliver it as coldly as it deserves she broke it, "Toyin ti ku o." Toyin is dead.

Was it not but a week or so earlier that the same Bose called and passed the phone over to someone to 'shock me?' Someone who turned out to be this same Toyin, my cousin's bosom friend, who I hadn't heard from in over 20 years?

Toyin was visiting Nigeria from the United States where, apparently, she had relocated that long ago; she had left her teaching job at a Federal Government College in Nigeria and had got married. She was "home" on one of such regular visits to her loving mother; visits by which her family and friends in Nigeria were able to gauge how "successful and rich" America and marriage had turned her.

"Toyin, dead?" I repeated in disbelief. "Impossible. Here in Nigeria or is she back in the States? Of what?" Many questions.

From what Bose gathered through a caller, Toyin was murdered by her husband and within days of her return to the States from that trip. Bose would be heading for Toyin's mum's place to console her, she said - if consolation were possible of a mother in that calamity.

But now more detail is out and on the Internet, Juliet, the English name Toyin apparently had come to be more known by, was clubbed to death with a baseball bat by her husband of 18 years! The tragic incident happened at the couple's home at 8615 Villa Largo Drive, Tampa, Florida. From a story posted on a Nigerian newsgroup email, Juliet whose age is put at 53 was married to Olufemi Oladapo Ademoye, 52, a successful pharmacist and popular restaurateur in Tampa, Florida, USA, and the couple has an only child by the marriage. Olufemi Ademoye, according to the report, was taken into police custody on June 16, 2010 charged with second-degree murder of his wife and mother of his son.

According to the story, Ademoye was enraged by his "discovery" of his wife's infidelity through some of her emails, which also led him to realize that she was probably already pregnant when they met and got married but she misled him into believing that he was the biological father of the child when he may, after all, not have been by him. Of course, this story is strongly refuted by Toyin's friends and family who insist it is baseless.

The phenomenon of spousal murder is certainly not one limited to any ethnic group, nationality, or race. It is a human phenomenon and a human tragedy. Wives kill husbands (perhaps more than) husbands kill wives. In most of the instances, infidelity on the part of one or the other is at the root. But essentially it is the crass inability of one or the other to control their basest animalistic urge that result in the loss of clearer reasoning and end in such violent releases.

Men (African men?) hate for their manhood or manliness to be ridiculed, and for many there cannot be greater ridicule than infidelity of their women (sometimes even of their concubines!), especially one done carelessly and with utter disdain - in comes the likes of the banished Deji of Akure, Oluwadare Adesina!

Women know this, and some would readily taunt their husbands with it (even without truly having engaged in one) as their own "get back" in moments of hot verbal exchange of insults and abuse; anything just to "hurt" the men as much as they are hurt. And so death may come visiting even the innocent.

In Nigeria the women are either conditioned to accepting their men's insane flaunt of their "tigritude", or are completely helpless about it in a male-chauvinistic condoning society, but once outside these shores, they find freedom and are quick to "teach" their men a lesson or two in the aphorism "what a man can do, a woman can do better!" - this, to the chagrin of the Nigerian man.

But, at the bottom of it all, is the question of what, truly, is the nature of Man, as in Human Beings - for, make no mistake about it, women have similar emotional and sexual urges as men do. Evolution and the process of socialisation and acculturation are what modify and continue to modify human relationships and tendencies. This topic cannot be exhausted in an article such as this of limited space. But there are wild women just as there are wild men.

Last week when my family went visiting the engaging family of Ola and Lola (Soyinka) in Abuja, the discussion dwelled on this issue of man-woman relationship and what nature imposes that Man "disposes". What, for instance, is the concept of "infidelity" and "cheating" to a Nigerian (nay, African) man as opposed to the Western or Caucasian man? Where does the concept of "cheating" come into a marriage when the man is allowed, even encouraged, to have more than one wife? Why, for instance, would an Eskimo (reportedly) consider "gifting" a visiting friend his wife for the night as a mark of love or appreciation for the friend?

And talking of wild women, one should pray never to encounter some really outrageously wild ones that would put one's better principles in jeopardy as happened recently to a good friend of mine in Ibadan. This friend, Jide, is a successful businessman, married to a German, and his business straddles both countries - Nigeria and Germany.

Whilst driving himself one evening in Ibadan, another car drove roughly past and overtook him. And, as is wont to happen, an exchange ensued between Jide and the other driver. Both men came out. Jide wondered what manner of man would drive thus. While the men did their out-staring and out-shouting game, the woman in the other car (who turned out to be the wife) came out in fury at Jide's "audacity" to confront her husband, and without hesitation gave Jide a nasty (dirty, as we would say) slap. "Don't you know you are talking to a Commissioner?" Apparently the husband is a Commissioner of something or another in the state.

Now, what would one do in that circumstance? Rub the cheek and let the "spirit of God" sway against the devil? Lock both husband and wife until a policeman can show up? Or do the instinctive - tear both wife and husband to shreds? Indeed kill or die if need be? It is an encounter one should pray never to be caught in, for how could one know how one would react?

But, back to the murder that started this piece. There can be no justification for taking someone else's life, and temporary insanity on account of adultery or dehumanizing insult cannot be excuse enough.

This Ademoye guy has "killed" three lives - his wife's, his son's, and his own. He certainly faces possibly life imprisonment. It is a shame that an otherwise glorious life would end thus, but his deed does not belong among civilized people. Nothing will bring back Juliet.

Goodnight Toyin.

A militant group, Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), has warned that those nudging President Goodluck Jonathan to contest next year’s presidential election would ruin him.

According to the group, not every Niger Deltan wanted Jonathan to contest the 2011 presidential election, as many would prefer him to “just conduct credible elections and then leave the same way he came.”
The JRC, in a statement signed by Cynthia Whyte, said forces that wanted to manipulate a Third Term for former President Olusegun Obasanjo were at work in the Jonathan presidency.

While describing the forces as “diversionary, divisive and very distracting,” the group added that they were investing so much energy into the “Jonathan must run” project like the “Youths Earnestly Ask for Abacha” and Obasanjo’s Third Term campaign.
The JRC expressed disappointment that after he became President, Jonathan was yet to take a bold step on the development of Niger Delta.

It warned that unless Jonathan focused on allowing his presidency have a positive impact on the people of the Niger Delta, those calling on him to run for the presidency in 2011 would ruin him.
The statement reads in part: “Months after he assumed position as Acting President and then President of the Nigerian state, Jonathan is yet to make any bold move towards development in the Niger Delta. Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) continues to shortchange the people of the Niger Delta in the award of oversea scholarships for graduates and post graduates.

“Roads are not being awarded or contracted in the Niger Delta. Employment is not being created in the Niger Delta. The quality of political leadership in the Niger Delta is still very poor. So tell me, what value has a Jonathan presidency brought to the people of the Niger Delta?
With the coming of President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, there was hope in certain quarters that the Niger Delta may get a far better deal. It is beginning to dawn on these people that it would certainly not be so. Apart from a deeply flawed amnesty programme that focuses on the rehabilitation of so-called ex-combatants and bandit elements from the creeks, nothing else is being done.

“There is belief in certain quarters that Yar’Adua was far more concerned in the development of the Niger Delta than Goodluck Jonathan. Spent forces who still seek relevance are bent on ruining Jonathan.
“Rather than correctly advise, guide and counsel Jonathan on how he can strengthen the course of development in the Niger Delta, these people have channeled all their energies into making noise and joining issues on whether Jonathan should run or whether zoning in PDP is real or not. The current trend amongst Southern politicians at the moment is to sing the ‘Jonathan Must Run’ swan song.”

EC, Ondo, NDLEA decry cannabis cultivation

The discovery of 132 acres of cannabis plantation in Igoba forest reserve at the weekend, has attracted condemnation from European Commission experts, Ondo State government and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Unlike in the past where such destruction operations were carried out exclusively by the NDLEA, the Agency this time involved both international and local partners to enable them have a firsthand experience of cannabis cultivation threat to the nation.

Besides the EC team who are currently on assessment tour of drug situation in the country, Governor Olusegun Mimiko was represented by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Planning, Honourable Saka Lawal.

Also present at the forest were the State Commissioner for Agriculture Chief Julius Akinnigbagba, Commissioner for Natural Resources, Prince Solagbade Amodeni and Special Assistant on Petroleum Alhaji Bello Jimoh.

The operational team, made up of 40 NDLEA officers and 12 combat Police officers walked for 45 minutes to get to the cannabis plantation from where their vehicles were parked.

The EC team, led by Serge Rinkel, said Nigeria had demonstrated enough determination to confront the drug problem.

He commended NDLEA for achieving so much in spite of all odds. “We have seen the fighting zeal and commitment of the NDLEA officer. In fact, penetrating such forests without bullet proof vests, is hazardous and underscores the sacrifice by NDLEA to address the drug problem,” Rinkel stressed.

Nigeria to establish investment fund with Iran, Bangladesh, others

Ihuoma Chiedozie, Abuja

Indications emerged on Thursday that Nigeria would establish a Joint Investment Fund with Iran, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey.

The governments of the eight countries agreed to explore ways and means of establishing the fund at the 7th Summit of the Eight Developing Countries (D-cool in Abuja.

The summit, which held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, was attended by leaders of the eight countries.

The agreement to set up the Joint Investment Fund, and other decisions, were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the D-8 countries.

The communiqué, which was termed "Abuja Declaration 2010", was read by the Secretary-General of the D-8 Commission, Dr. Widi Agoes Pratikto,

Highlights of the declaration include agreements by the eight governments to facilitate closer investment collaboration among the various countries.

However, the summit stressed that the expected investment collaboration should be private sector- driven.

Part of the Abuja Declaration 2010 reads, "We recognise that intra D-8 investments are essential for deepening the economic relationship among the member states.

"While recognising that the present intra D-8 investments are far below the potential of the member countries, we therefore, reaffirm our resolve to take immediate measures to encourage, facilitate and promote Foreign Direct Investment in the priority areas."

It added, "In this regard, we direct the (D-cool Commission to explore ways and means to establish a D-8 investment fund and identify investment opportunities in the member countries, including the proposal by the Islamic Republic of Iran to establish the D-8 Joint Investment Fund.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has said that Nigeria will use the opportunity of its coordination of the Group of Eight Developing Nations to make the private sector the engine room for development cooperation.

He stated this at the pre-summit state dinner for Heads of State and Governments of the D-8 held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria emerged the chairman of the D-8 and would coordinate the group for the next two years.

NAN also reports that Presidents Abdullah Gul of Turkey, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheik Hasina, were among the leaders, who arrived Abuja on Wednesday for the summit, which opened on Thursday.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Jonathan said that Nigeria valued its membership of the group dearly.

He desribed the group as a vehicle for development, bond of friendship and shared interest among various countries.

"It is my expectation that this special relationship will continue to grow from strength to strength and provide impetus for a mutually beneficial trade and economic relations among the member countries," he said.

Jonathan noted that the D-8 transcended geography, ideology and religion by uniting countries and peoples from different regions and cultures for the purpose of promoting economic cooperation and collaboration.

"We recognise that while the role of governments as catalysts and enablers of economic growth must remain pivotal, D-8 cooperation must essentially be private sector-driven.

"Accordingly, we reaffirm the importance of intense private sector involvement in all activities of the Group.

"We instruct the Commission to explore ways of promoting private sector-led cooperation and growth among the D-8 countries."

The declaration further agreed that member countries should "take advantage of the liberal investment regimes, skilled manpower and low cost of doing business in other D-8 countries."

To ensure the expected level of intra D-8 investments, the declaration further agreed on the need for "regular interaction and sharing of information on investment opportunities by the authorities of the D-8 member countries with the private sector and chambers of commerce with the aim of creating awareness for availing these opportunities."

The leaders of the D-8 also advocated free trade practices in the global economy, with particular interest in free access to the markets of the major global economies.

They said, "We believe that free and fair trade is beneficial to the global economy. We also believe that access to the markets of major economies of the world is essential for poverty alleviation and economic development.

"We would, therefore, like to see a meaningful and fair conclusion of the negotiations of the Doha development agenda of the World Trade Organisation."We acknowledge the instrumental role of energy in economic growth and development, and while reaffirming our commitment to broaden and deepen cooperation in that sector, stress the importance of collaborative efforts on capacity-building, transfer of technology, exploration of new energy source, development of alternative fuels, including renewable sources of energy, as well as peaceful uses of nuclear energy."We, taking into account the far-reaching consequences of the global financial and economic crisis, agree to scale up our cooperation and coordination of efforts in relevant information to promote our common interests within existing multilateral frameworks."

UK court jails three Nigerians, Dutch national over sham marriage

Agency reporter

A British crown court has sentenced three Nigerians and a Dutch national to a combined jail term of more than six years for their roles in a sham marriage scam.

advertisement

Trouble started for the four convicts when the United Kingdom Border Agency officers identified suspicious travel patterns of passengers flying in and out of Luton and Stansted Airports on tickets purchased by a 29-year-old Nigerian, Mr. Adeolu Eletu, according to a statement on the agency's website.

Consequently, officers from the agency's Immigration Crime Team (East) on February 10, 2010 arrested Ms. Daniloush Solano, a 21-year-old Dutch woman, at Luton Airport as she attempted to board a flight to Amsterdam.

Investigations later revealed that earlier that day Solano had married Eletu at a church in Wood Green, London after being paid 1,500 euros.

Eletu was subsequently arrested on February 27 at his home in Falcon Brae, Livingston. His Nigerian girlfriend, Helen Omoboye, 33, was also arrested. She had been due to participate her own sham marriage at the same Wood Green venue on February 11.

A 36-year-old Nigerian, Mr. Sylvernus Ogungbade was also arrested on February 10 after officers established that Solano had boarded a taxi to Luton Airport from his home in Goldbeater's Grove, Edgware. Immigration checks revealed that Ogungbade, who was living alone, had recently applied for a visa on the back of his marriage to a Dutch woman who was still wanted by the UK Border Agency.

Last week Thursday at Luton Crown Court, Eletu, Ogungbade and Omoboye pleaded guilty to conspiring to breach the UK's immigration laws. Eletu and Omoboye also pleaded guilty to perjury charges.

Eletu was sentenced to two years and eight months, Omoboye was sentenced to 18 months and Ogungbade was sentenced to a year and eight months. Solano had pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to breach the UK's immigration laws and perjury at an earlier hearing on June 10. She was sentenced to 12 months.

Sam Bullimore, UK Border Agency Assistant Director, said, "The sentences handed out show how seriously we, and the courts, take these kinds of attempts to undermine our immigration laws.

"We will not tolerate immigration abuse and, as these convictions demonstrate, our Immigration Crime Teams are creating a hostile environment for those who break the immigration laws. We know that sham marriage rackets are not just about getting a ticket to the UK, often the offenders are also involved in other forms of criminality. If we see marriages that are not genuine, we will challenge them and prosecute where appropriate.

"People should be under no illusion that marriage is enough to get permission to stay in the UK. Couples must also prove to the UK Border Agency that they have been in a genuine relationship for at least two years."

Any foreign criminal sentenced to more than 12 months in prison for any offence is automatically considered for deportation, the website said.
