PoliticsHow We Secured Igbo Businesses, Property During Civil War – Buhari by MRLINGTON(op): 12:10pm On Mar 21, 2015
A socio-cultural organization, Igbo Delegates Assembly, has thrown their weight behind the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, in the March 28 presidential election.
Speaking at the Buhari campaign office in Abuja Friday, President General of the group, which comprise of Igbo’s living in the northern part of Nigeria, Sam Enyama, described Mr. Buhari as a man of impeccable character and urged people of the south east to downplay any religious and tribal sentiments in the coming polls and vote for him.
He said a Buhari presidency would address the pressing needs of all the regions.
The Eze’udo of the 19 northern state, Uche Egenti, said as Igbos who lived in the north for many years, they know Mr. Buhari and what he stands for.
“We are here to support your aspiration to become the president of this country,” he said. “We know you, it is easier to work with you because of what you stand for. We are not ready to be plunged into another civil war and we are pleading with you to help us organize Nigeria again. We want discipline to reign again.
“We want to plead with you to help galvanized Nigeria once more, let the discipline rain again in Nigeria, let the polity be sensitized.
“A lot of people have complained that the issue about you is religion but we know you are not a religious bigot. You are a very firm, articulated officer of the Nigerian army. In 1983 when Nigeria was at a verge of collapse, you came in and rescue it.”
He also said the group was in full support of the use of the permanent voters’ card, because it would enhance decency in the polity and bring credibility to the election.
“We are here to let you know that the Igbos are behind you,” he said.
Responding, Mr. Buhari thanked the group for the visit and endorsement.
He said their faith in him would not be in vain.
“I assure you, APC will not disappoint you,” he pledged.
He also said the meeting was important for him because it involved a group with lot of experience regarding crisis in the country, having been personally affected one way or the other.
Mr. Buhari said Igbo businessmen remained the economic backbone of particularly the north.
“I could recall the good old days, when it is Christmas and New Year, virtually, all businesses closed shop in the north especially in Kano until the Igbos come back and then the businesses will pick up again,” he said.
The former Head of State also recalled that many Igbos who left the north during the Civil war, came back after and found most of their property intact.
“Wherever Igbos have property in a town, there were committees in the respective towns, the property were repaired and given for rent, while an account was opened for them,” he said. “After the war, the Igbos that survived came back and claimed their property and the savings made from the rent.”
Mr. Buhari said the civil service made all of that possible, adding “I thank the civil servants of those good old days because the committees were developed with very clear and firm terms of reference and properties belonging to the Igbos were looked after and they claimed them back. I think they did well.”
Why I joined politics

Mr. Buhari also went down memory lane recounting all the offices he held both in the military and outside.
He also recalled having spent 20 months in detention
He said two reasons made him join politics.
Firstly, he narrated how after his regime was overthrown and he was jailed, people kept coming to see him in numbers, which prompted him to give politicking a thought.
“I was sitting at home after I got out of detention and thought people will leave me alone,” he said. “I didn’t even build a filling station, not to talk of owning an oil block and so I thought I have lost their sympathy.
“But they kept coming to me and there was nothing I could do and then I speculated that maybe when I get into partisan politics, I will get into a position to be heard.”
He also said another incident was the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991 in spite of its nuclear arsenal, which was greater than Nato’s and superior social programme.
“It just collapsed and people just went home; suddenly there are 18 Republics in the old Soviet Union,” he said. “That was when I decided that the best form of governance is multi party democratic system with a big proviso that elections must be free and fair. Otherwise, the whole thing will be a sham. It is in pursuit of that that I am on my fourth attempt to get the highest office in the land.
“In the first three attempts, I ended up at the Supreme Court because I believe in the system. There is no point believing in a system and conducting yourself haphazardly.
“I fill fulfilled because when I decided to join politics in April 2002, I joined APP even though there was PDP and they were in government. But I went into the opposition even though there were governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives in the party, but the following year, they gave me the ticket and what did I do with the ticket? I got the late Chuba Okadigbo to be my running mate and by that, I blew the mind of people about my tribal or religious position.
“In 2007, I picked Chief Ume Ezeoke and again, he was Igbo, so, I dispel any question about my being a religious bigot or a tribalist. Later on, I picked Pastor Bakare and now, I am running with a Pastor, Osinbajo. The issue of religion has been taken into account in this country, but then, it is what human beings are worth in politics that they may be able to earn the efforts they are putting in.”

PoliticsGov Oshiomole Orders Investigation Into Death Of Hotel Staff In Police Custody by MRLINGTON(op): 9:44am On Mar 19, 2015
Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole has ordered a full scale investigation into the death of Chibuike Edeh, a staff of Protea hotel in Benin city, Edo state, who was arrested for stealing N48,000 belonging a guest at the hotel on March 14th. He later died in police custody.

Gov Oshiomole gave the charge while receiving the family members of the young man who staged a protest at the government house yesterday March 18th.

Speaking to the family, Oshiomhole said;
"Let me thank you for coming to Government House to lay your complaint in a very peaceful manner in spite of the pains in your heart and the gruesome murder of your son, your brother and our comrade. I read about this yesterday and the impression I was given was that he was handed over to the Police. Whether or not the young man was a thief, whether or not the money was found on him or he threw it across the wall is not the issue. There is law. There is procedure to be followed to investigate alleged stealing, even alleged murder. The police can listen to complaint from anyone who has cause to complain or report theft or any crime or suspected crime to the police. The responsibility of the police stops at arresting and investigating a suspect. They do not have the right to kill, to maim, to brutalize and to murder anybody. That is not acceptable. The responsibility of the police in our constitution is very clear; to protect lives and property and they are law enforcement agencies, they are not to execute people who are suspected of crimes. They are to arraign suspects in court and ensure that suspects are prosecuted according to our laws. I have received since yesterday various accounts about whether or not this person died in the police custody, whether he died of natural causes or he died as a result of police torture or whether he died in the cause of allegedly trying to escape and he was knocked down by a vehicle. I will raise these issues with the Commissioner. If somebody runs across the road and a vehicle knocks him down, the vehicle will be apprehended and the driver will be known so it cannot be an unknown vehicle or driver.‎ I do understand that when we talk of police custody, they call it protective custody. The police are to protect suspects and they are deemed innocent until they are found guilty by a competent court and police cannot constitute itself into a court of law and even if a judge finds a man guilty of murder and sentences him to death, he cannot be executed except the governor approves of the death sentence so the laws are very clear. However, the issues for us to find out are whether this person died in police custody and if he escaped how he escaped from police custody because he wasn’t reported to be an armed robber. He was said to be at the very worst, that he stole money from somebody, he was not armed with any offensive weapon and so no one can say he was running and he was shot, so we will find out” Oshiomhole said.
In a related development, the Edo state Police command has released a statement denying that Chibuike died in their custody but says he was involved in a fatal accident after he decided to run when he was caught for  stealing. The statement in part reads;
"On March 14, 2015, the police went with him (Chibuike) with a view to recovering the exhibit, but on getting to the scene, the suspect took to his heels. In the process, he ran into a moving Toyota Camry with registration number, FUG 93 JD (EDO), driven by one Obamedo Omoregie. The vehicle dragged the suspect from Central Road to 1st East Circular Road, along Sapele Road, before it came to a halt. The suspect sustained bruises on his body, he was immediately rushed to UBTH with the assistance of some Good Samaritans, where he eventually died. The driver of the car has been arrested for causing the death of the suspect, while the car is impounded and the photograph is hereby attached.”
The father of Chibuike, Mr Raphael Edeh, has however described the Police claims as false.
"I don’t believe that he died in an accident. As a suspect in police custody, he must have been handcuffed and held by the policeman who accompanied him. So, running away would have been difficult. He must have been tortured, and the car accident was used as a camouflage. Only God knows the truth" he said.

PhonesWechat Adds New Features To Social Media by MRLINGTON(op): 8:08am On Mar 19, 2015
WeChat, a social media platform with mobile messaging communication service that was developed since 2011 by Tencent in China, has added new features to its platform, to boost user experience and to MAKE ONLINE chatting more interactive, with an expanded Close User Group (CUG).

Although WeChat is not as popular in Nigeria and most African countries, its rich contents and the expanded CUG system, which allows up to 300 people in a single user group, has made it most popular in Europe and Asia, especially in China, and today, it is ranked the second most used social media application in the world after Facebook.

Introducing WeChat at a recent media session in Lagos, Regional Manager, West Africa for WeChat, Mr. Idemudia Dima-Okojie, said the social media platform has been redesigned and loaded with more fun and more social activities that will also drive business among users. WeChat could be downloaded free of charge from the Apps Store on any smartphone and personal computers.

Speaking on the additional features, Dima-Okojie, said the social media platform allows members of a group to monitor their followers and readers, and have idea of the number of people that listen to their broadcast and programmes. Prominent among the additional features  is the creation of Official Account (OA) application, which is a channel that enables brand or business owners to actively communicate and engage with their audience or followers in a variety of ways on a personal level.

CUG members, he said, could use the platform to make voice calls, video calls, locate members on realtime, send SMS, vote, chat, listen to radio and television programmes and broadcast, and also send text messages to members of the group while a television programme is being broadcast.

Another additional feature, according to Dima-Okojie, is that listening to radio programmes, television broadcast on WeChat, chatting, sending SMS, voice calls and video calls are all free of charge, even though they run on data that could be managed by the user.

Other features on the OA apps, include one-on-one brand engagement, running of competition, running renewed programmes, running polls to get user data, location-based services, push notification, integrate group chats, among other special functionalities based on request.

Another aspect of WeChat is that it is a platform that allows each content provider to develop his or her own data and also manage the data themselves without interference.

Since it is a platform that accommodates radio and television broadcast, Dima-Okojie, said WeChat is making arrangement to sign on with more local radio and television stations in Nigeria, including online content providers like Konga and Jumia, to further enrich users experience on the social media platform.

Once an official account is set up, WeChat will be available across multiple platforms, without the need to build native apps for each mobile platform.
WeChat is available on mobile such as apps store, google play, windows phone, Nokia Symbian Operating System, and Blackberry. It is also available on Personal Computers (PC) such as Mac App Store and Web WeChat.

PoliticsOkrika Attack: I Won’t Respond To Amaechi, Says Patience Jonathan by MRLINGTON(op): 7:58am On Mar 19, 2015
The First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has said she will not descend so low as to reply the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, on the allegations levelled against her that she was responsible for the political violence that has rocked the state, especially the attack at the All Progressives Congress (APC) rally at Okrika.

This came as the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Dan Bature, on Wednesday said Governor Amaechi lied in his allegation that the withdrawal of the anti-terrorism unit, C4I, from the APC gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, was an attempt to assassinate him.

Mrs. Jonathan spoke at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential women rally at the Liberation stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

She described Amaechi as a rascal and said it would be demeaning for her to respond to such allegations.

“They are rascals and I will not respond to them. Don’t let me open my mouth to talk about these rascals,” she said.

According to her, “I have come here to talk about issues; to say what Jonathan has done in Rivers State. If you come to the transport sector, the federal government has completed the East-West Road. Today if you look at the Aba-Port Harcourt road, federal government is working on it.

“If you come to the aviation sector; if you go to the Port Harcourt International Airport, it is being rehabilitated. The railway system stopped working several years ago but today, our railway is nearing completion. Today, railways in Rivers are nearing completion, not 100 years monorail that will never be completed until your grandchildren will be born. We have done the jetty at Okrika, Degema. This was done by the PDP. I am saying this because they claim whatever project that is done by the PDP.

“Onne Road has also been completed. Today, the Onne Port 3 and 4 have also been completed. We have also converted the gas that had been wasting at Onne to electricity. About 150 companies are working at Onne, providing employment to Rivers indigenes.”

She also warned the people of the state not to vote APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) on the March 28 election as he would fill all the prisons in the country with people he perceived to be his political enemies, adding that “once a dictator will remain a dictator”.

She insisted that Buhari does not have what it takes to fight corruption or fulfill any of the promises he had been making to the people.

“Whenever he (Buhari) comes to you again, ask him what he did for Rivers State when he was Head of State. Rivers people are not fools. Nobody can fool us,” she said.

The first lady warned the women not to sell their permanent voters’ card  (PVCs), for any sum of money, noting that it was within their power to vote out “this expired drug called APC”.

On the governorship elections, Jonathan said PDP would ensure the victory of its candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, as the next governor of the state.

She said the people of Rivers state would reclaim thjeir mandate and give it to the PDP.

“We did not vote for these people. We in Rivers state voted Celestine Omehia but these people came and stole our mandate and today they are abusing us. They don’t have respect for elders. They are busy abusing me and my husband. I will not answer them. But a man that can descend to insult his father, his sister, his grandfather; what do you expect from such a man. In Rivers State we respect elders but these rascals have no respect for their elders. We must vote them out in April,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bature, has said Amaechi lied in his allegation that the withdrawal of the anti-terrorism unit, C4I from Peterside, was an attempt to assassinate him.
Bature, in a statement issued yesterday in Port Harcourt, described Amaechi’s allegations against the police as spurious and wispy.

The police commissioner said in the statement, “It is on record that since my assumption of duty as the Commissioner of Police six months ago, I have remained focused and committed to performing my constitutional duties and responsibilities of protecting lives and property amongst others. I have refused to be provoked or drawn in unnecessary responses to the avalanche of unsubstantiated allegations, in most cases wild imaginations that are predicated in falsehood that seem to be the penchant of the state government.”

He explained, “Redeployment of C4i Policemen from Hon. Dakuku Peterside to their traditional duties of fighting violent crimes and their immediate replacement with the elite Special Protection Unit (SPU) has now been attributed to withdrawal of the policemen attached to him.

“Cases of cultists’ related clashes that sometime resulted in deaths have suddenly been attributed to killing of political party supporters. The alleged killing of seven supporters of a political party is not only unfounded as the command has not received such report.

“Arrests made on cases of unlawful possession of firearms, robbery, cultism and murder are now attributed to politics. What a mathematical wonder! Six suspects arrested and charged to court for unlawful possessions of firearms have now become over 400 supporters of a political party in our custody. The allegation of the purported plan to arrest 307 leaders of a political party is nothing but a ruse to whip up public sympathy. The command has no plan to arbitrarily arrest anybody. Anyone who is not planning to cause or foster violence or breach of public peace has no cause to fear or raise false alarm.”

While advising the state government not to turn security issues to “comical entertainment,” Bature said, “It is strongly believed that the vituperations are frustrating signs of the government’s inability to pressure the command to release hardened criminals involved heinous cases of murder, deadly cult activities, unlawful firearms possession, kidnappings and sundry acts of lawlessness that ordinarily would have been charged to court but for the industrial action of the Rivers State Judiciary.”

Politics12 Of 26 Political Parties Pledge Allegiance To APC by MRLINGTON(op): 7:52am On Mar 19, 2015
Thirteen political parties have pledged to work with the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to ensure that the general election is conducted in a free and fair manner.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), Dr. Bashir Ibrahim, who led representatives of the parties on a solidarity visit to the APC presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), Wednesday in Abuja, said they would stand with the APC by insisting that the right thing is done to ensure a credible election.

“We are here to collaborate with the APC. It is unfortunate that some political parties have decided to serve their masters rather than the country. We are here to inform you that we will stand by you and on the side of the truth,” he said.

While receiving the parties Buhari expressed gratitude to those who had agreed to enter into a working relationship with him and the APC.

“I honestly appreciate how you arrived at this decision to cooperate with us in this election. This decision is very patriotic. We have to appreciate the stage we are in. We have to realise that we can save the system and our country if we come together,” he said.

He also accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of sentencing Nigeria to economic and political underdevelopment since it assumed power 16 years ago, adding that the country had made more money between 1999 and 2015 than it made between 1914, when amalgamation took place, and 1999.

He challenged the ruling party to tell Nigerians how it had utilised the resources it made in the last 16 years it has been in power.

“We challenge the PDP, let them account for their stay in power for 16 years in terms of the fundamental objectives we have been talking about in the areas of security, the economy and corruption.

“We have been very consistent about these issues but people who are sitting on the periphery have kept on making noise and wasting our time. Let them come and defend themselves on what they have done in the last 16 years with the incredible resources they made within this period, the incredible resources this country realised within this period, which is much more than what the country made since amalgamation in 1914. If you like, go and get this record from the central bank.

“The type of money we made in the last 16 years, we have never made it before. We used to have Nigerian Airways, the Nigerian Shipping Line, Nigerian Railways, etc. But what do we have now, nothing.

“Look at the state of our naira. Now you have to get N220-something for a dollar. How can we develop under this system?” he asked.

Some of the parties present during the visit included PDM, African Peoples Alliance (APA), KOWA Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hope Democratic Party (HDP), Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), United Peoples Party (UPP), Accord Party (AP), Independent Democratic Party (IDP), Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and Action Alliance (AC).
