TV/MoviesRe: Invasion 1897 - British Film Institue - Q&A Session - 7th Feb, 2015 by mrmagoo(m):
prof800:
I have been fighting the urge to comment on this thread but I cannot withstand it anymore.
Hmmm! So out of nowhere a random bros jumps out and starts selflessly defending villageboi's thread,Did villageboi put you up to this or are you village boi's alter ego? You know what scratch that I want to believe villageboi is a lot more matured than that and your surfacing few seconds after his disappearance is just a mere coincidence

prof800:
I am on a resolution to never reply "people who don't know better"
But lemme guess you are going to violate your principles because I said something horrifyingly horrible right? grin my my you are so dramatic

prof800:
First this is not the main critic thread for invasion 1897...this is a Q&A session...for rubbinMinds. I'm pretty sure a pure criticism of this movie will be even less merciful
huh Including the write up? Because that is what everyone on the thread is concerned with
prof800:
Second, a review is only a person's personal opinion. It is not worth arguing over. If you don't like it then write your own.
Didn't argue man I just told him his review was not constructive and the guy has been tripping balls ever since

prof800:
Then we should know that the importance of criticisms
In hollywood, indie filmmakers are usually on their toes knowing that various critics (professional, arm.chair, audience, etc) are at their backs... watching. That is how they encourage professionalism and creativity.
grin If you think that our criticisms are keeping/ or will keep nigerian movie producers on their toes then my friend you are a dreamer with a capital D
have you seen the nollywood bashing threads on nairaland? I swear they can create a library with it I won't be surprised if there are actually in thousands and what sickens me is that they all do the same thing, criticize, clean mouth and waka commot without proferring any solutions who will take those kind of critics seriously? Though it maybe unconventional, my own na if you claim to know so much about quality production and creativity then why do you limit your self to generic nollywood is not good criticisms? why don't you do your own movie and set an example?
Abeg just look up wikkipedia's article on the movie figurine and the legacy it left in the industry, the movie wasn't just ignored, it became case of study in many universities, other producers started working on production quality to compete, nollywood's international attention began to increase all for just one movie something that years of constant criticisms could not achieve.

prof800:
@lechiffre, I admire your level of understanding and
I respect your views and opinions. Apparently we
share similar concerns on this issue.
Let us hope for the best anyway.
...cheers.
Oya where is your retract for me? Make it snappy I have a reputation to protect on nairaland
grin just kidding!

VillageBoi:
No I did not insinuate anything. This is the EXACT post (read the bold part) -

You note the word 'my' in there? That's very, very different from "Where did you read that movie reviewing is a career?"
grin haha is this how you get when someone corrects you? Okay what did you now mean by the question "where did you read that movie reviewing is my career"? That's such a dumb question and you're so confident to mention it smh Which one be "my" and "a" wey you dey put I only implied that its not a career/field/job you
will succeed in why? Because your write up was terrible,(just like when you say comedy is not the thing for you when you make a bad joke get it?) so why are you confusing yourself?

VillageBoi:
For all the noise you have made in this thread you completely lack the basic understanding & reading skills to figure out what is written... and the above is not the only instance from you in this thread. Here's another one -

Where in the world did I refer to what you are calling my write-up as a Q&A session? The video posted is the Q&A session you twit.
huh Ok now I'm getting scared how do you reason? Did I ever mention anything about your video? I was only targeting your write up that's why I even stated "since you've called your really long post a Q&A session" long post having to do with a write up Get it? even on nairaland home page they called it a review because of your write up so I guess they can't read and comprehend too bah? grin
Smh, okay let's so take it one at a time your opening post consists of a Q&A session(video),a movie trailer(video) and a write up(the whole "I saw this movie at BFI blah blah" you typed) , so just to clarify our"confusion" why don't you tell me what that is if you claim its not a review is it an essay? is it an article? is it a sermon?

VillageBoi:
You very clearly can't understand anything you read... pls keep quiet about; no be by force nah. For the sake of "Yay I managed to yab VillageBoi" the drivel you are writing is extremely embarrassing to read.
I'm not running, I just can't be bothered to type anymore to a point-blank idi.ot.
cheesy oh I see what this is, I hurt your pride lol now it all makes sense, for a moment I thought you were crazy or playing dumb but I see you are just angry.
Pele o grin lol! I never knew you were some kind of local champion on nairaland, perhaps I wouldn't have been so disrespectful and insensitive from now on, I shall address you as igwe I hope that appeases your ego grin smh
Fact still remains:
-Your write up was terrible and unhelpful
-Find more creative ways to gain attention other than criticizing "bad" nollywood films to earn cheap points
-Stop deceiving yourself with the "a Q&A session", "my write up" routine because I know you clearly understood what I meant so stop embarrassing yourself
If e pain you too much you are free to run unto a knife.

VillageBoi:
You'll have to try much harder at sarcasm mate. What it really is is the plain, simple daftness that has been prevalent in all your posts in this thread
Or perhaps you should try harder at reading and understanding, cheesy for the love of God why will a human being refer to a write up as a question and answer session? Not even a two year old can make such a mistake(metaphor by the way just incase you want to take the two year old thing literally) you know what? I shall do you a favour and pretend like I didn't see this, I want to believe you reason like a human being

VillageBoi:
Did you really drop a line "educate yourself movie reviewing is actually a career"? Oh my... Discovery 2015!
Well you did say insinuate that there was no job like reviewing movies and I simply enlightened you huh Who knew you would take offence? well at least now you know wink
VillageBoi:
We get you love the sound of your own voice but come on take your own so-called'advice' and make it interesting!
huh Well this part is kind of meaningless, grin don't tell me you are running out of things to say come on you can do better than this, its embarrassing

VillageBoi:
Actually don't bother. I didn't like the
film... so get over it!
Oh running with your tail between your legs, wink good idea at least you know when to accept defeat
By the way here is a real kicker I haven't even seen the movie so once again shove your "asss kisser" card back in the deck

Well I got that from the home page you can check it out for yourself
VillageBoi:
I clearly wrote the thread heading as "Invasion 1897 - British Film Institue - Q&A Session - 7th Feb, 2015"... exactly as it has been since the thread was posted.
Since you have clearly stated that your long post was a Q&A session, then in that case your Q&A session sucks
grin
TV/MoviesRe: Invasion 1897 - British Film Institue - Q&A Session - 7th Feb, 2015 by mrmagoo(m): 11:08pm On Feb 11, 2015
My My looks like I hit a raw nerve, you dey vex? I thought since you were so good at dishing criticisms at other people, that perhaps you would be matured enough to appreciate some criticisms about you. LWKMD well I can see I was wrong

VillageBoi:
Nigerians that expect everyone must be a behind-kisser - far too many of such people like you exist. And you ALL come with the most ridiculous statement "Eh you didn't like it where is your own?"
incase it wasn't clear in my previous post I am aware of nollywood's errors and disorganization and every other fault you can mention, so keep your asss kisser excuse inside your pocket my friend

VillageBoi:
Jeez you guys can't ever come up with anything even half sensible?

Your quote - "We all know nollywood movies are bad"
So Nollywood movies must be bad? Well then let your 'expectation' remain in the gutter where it already is
Smh why are you being so shallow? "We all know nollywood movies are bad" means that whatever fault you lifted in your "review" was already common knowledge, that doesn't mean I expect every nollywood movie to come out bad ,besides a line ago I thought I was an asss kisser? na wao you don vex so te you don dey contradict yourself
Lol!
VillageBoi:
Another of your quotes - "Movie reviews is a career I strongly advice you don't go into cause you are really bad at it"
How do you pull off such rubbish? Someone goes to see a film but according to you (translating what you've said) they can't talk about their views unless it's a career? Where did you read that movie reviewing is my career? If you had even a tiny, tiny bit of common sense you'd know that what I wrote wasn't a 'review' nor was it even meant to be one. So yes, I saw a movie, didn't like it... if you feel like getting some rope I'm not going to stop you
I'm sorry but I thot the topic title was A Nairalander's "Review" Of The Benin Kingdom
Historical Movie "Invasion 1897"

Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks your write up is a review so please do enlighten us on what your tasteless write up is and
Speaking of enlightenment, movie reviewing isn't a career? So what do roger ebert or kim newman do for a living? here have a link: [http://education-portal.com/articles/Become_a_Film_Critic_Education_and_Career_Roadmap.html], educate yourself movie reviewing is actually a career, I just hope you don't take corrections personal too
And who says you can't talk about movies after you watch them? I only said your review sucked and you have no future in the movie reviewing business
Why are you so pained? Maybe I should save that rope for you

VillageBoi:
And to this section of your post - "Rather than sitting in front of your laptop and forming movie critic from an armchair, why don't you go into the movie making business? I'm sure nollywood can use your"knowledge and expertise" or better yet why don't you shoot your own movie to set an example? Like it or not lancelot shot a movie where is your own movie?"
Absolutely not going to respond to the abject stupidity of it.
lol of course you can't respond to that (and I respect you for that) because its the truth, which is bitter but has to be said anyway
smiley cool your temper

Saw this film a couple of days ago at the BFI and part of their regular 'African Odysseys' programme.

Wow, what do I even say about it? First let me remind you of the trailer -

Oga Orikinla, no vex but I was seriously disappointed with this film
Yawn! a terrible write up made to discredit a "terrible" movie? now that is what I call an irony

I think we have enough of nairalanders who go around bashing nollywood movies and finger pointing at their mistakes just to score cheap points and the sad part is ,they are always unconstructive

So here's my advice for you mr op

- We all know nollywood movies are bad so find a
more creative way to gain attention

- Movie reviews is a career I strongly advice you don't go into cause you are really bad at it

- Rather than sitting in front of your laptop and forming movie critic from an armchair, why don't you go into the movie making business? I'm sure nollywood can use your"knowledge and expertise" or better yet why don't you shoot your own movie to set an example? Like it or not lancelot shot a movie where is your own movie? Until you can shoot a full length movie that is up to taste and can beat this "bad" movie then my dear friend I suggest you sign off

What reality do you want me to wake up to? Do want to run away from the country? You will. Just end up coming back I've seen it a thousand times from frnds, family, celebs etc, or do you want nigeria to divide? Well news flash it can't, because it will end up in many many civil wars and economic distablility, wetin your eye go see your mouth no go fit talk, where are the countries even ready to recognize your "divided nigerian countries" everything we have achieved was achieved together the elites of all tribes know this and hence won't support a break up so the best option is to help ourselves extend our obligations change our orientation #ThatsAll

No we went around screaming #bringbackourgirls yes gov't should be on their toes but that movement should have educated people on terrorism and counter terrorist measures, it should have spread awareness so that everyone should be careful it should have raised money to move the community chibok people to refugee camps out of the way of the bh NA cross fire but instead they disgraced themselves and their country and in the end did it bring the girls back? CultureRe: Funny Things Only Nigerians Do by mrmagoo(m): 12:38pm On Oct 01, 2014
severee: Is it security issues? how about investing in the Nigerian police force? All they need is to be professionals starting from their weapons patrol officers shouldn’t walk around with assault rifles that is for tactical assault teams but there are stun guns and rubber bullet guns which can be holstered + surveillance gadgets like cameras etc, police officers should be trained often on work ethics that has preserves human rights and at the same time maintain order so where are the Nigerian inventors to create these weapons they've been complaining about not getting recognition isn't this an opportunity to make money and even create that recognition that they are being deprived of ,secondly police officers have to feel good about being police officers they should like their jobs and be scared to lose it, their workforce should be trimmed down to a useful and manageable quantity so resources can go round and there should special treatment that comes with being police officers like discount on shopping and special perks that make them like their jobs and at the same time there should be a platform for people to reach out and report rogue officers, when them begin sack them 1 by 1 them go behave, but where are the venture capitalist that can manage police salaries and pensions to prevent embezzlement and teach the police officers how to invest their money what of the personnel management that can structure and organize the NPF it is not so much black and white I bet there are grey areas in which you can make your contributions
Is it unemployment? How about our schooling system stop training workers and start training entrepreneurs,we can make FG demand contract staffing for everyone(with full benefits)and teach workers the power of investing and running your own business being one of its options(that's if stock options are too expensive) if they like u they renew your contract this way work will go round and nigerian man will learn to depend on his hands rather than waiting for someone to employ him
Is it electricity? Two problems in this sector power generation and power distribution , about generation, we have solar sources we have coal, natural gas or even nuclear energy the point is why aren’t we working on developing other sources of power generation where are the research teams? Do they know the opportunity that awaits them here? even though its to go retail and provide accessible and affordable solar powered inverter generators that can provide 24/7 electricity for everybody that will work both for the people and the pocket of the inventors you don’t need to wait for gov’t to give you the go ahead. as for distribution knowing the total population of Nigerians is a start saying "we are about 170 million" is wrong we should know specifically how many we are who are the rich who are the average who are the poor who dey work for bank etc we need to know all these information about everyone so where are the statistician or programmers that can design database softwares that can make population census easier ,that can distribute not just electricity but other amenities easily to people in an organized manner and make money for you the inventor at the same time
Is it healthcare? Exercise often eat healthy and visit the doctor for check ups at least once a year keep a clean environment and maintain good hygiene this is primary school health education but Nigerians do non of these even though you know the way hospitals are in the country, take a look at the sector sef see the case of NMA USE YOUR INITIAVE why aren’t they selling health insurance to people? If they even make it as low as 500naira them go see the returns, Why didn’t they ask FG to force the hand of multi national companies in the country to finance procurement of standard equipment and necessary R&grin , where are the awareness and fund raising campaigns to generate funds for their requests even the teaching colleges what are they using the tuition fees for? I attended school in Nigeria and I know how much they paid and how many people kill themselves to study medicine and surgery how about expanding their specialities even if it means all 18000 of them contributing 1000naira each month and investing the proceeds in stocks and assets to raise money or even solely controlling the flow of pharmaceuticals and dermatological products in the market there were lot of ways to develop the health sector which they would incredibly benefit from but instead they went to FG to give ultimatums? and rallied round tv cameras screaming solidarity for ever and embarrassing themselves.
Is it corruption that one no hard it starts with you the keywords are intergrity, accountability and discipline teach your children these virtues don’t let them cheat on their UTMEs anymore instead push them to read all work and no play makes jack prepared for a tough world , teach your friends religious leaders teach your congregation let the message go round in such a way that it becomes subliminal in the minds of nigerians, also every working and business sector should have an in house organization the promote disclipline and support for members of these sectors whether its the union of barbers or union of bankers/scientists even politicians yes they should register with the civil servants and if there are any news or complaints of unprofessionalism or corruption from any member of that union, it will be the obligation of the union to not only support law enforcement on such a person they should also be sanctioned by their union just like tb joshua and the collapsed building CAN should support law enforcement agencies in investigations and charges and also sanction the pastor for endagering the lives of citizens you won't be able to bribe any judge na because the judge belongs to a union watching his actions and sharing the same vision for the country. If this is effected properly corruption in this country will at least slice in half
Is it terrorism? See whether America is sponsoring boko haram or APC or PDP, your offensive and your defensive determines your victory in battle for offensive, why don’t you enlist in the NA to fight insurgency? Them say bh get sponsor ehn make we sef sponsor/support our soldiers, imagine they were complaining about poor living standards and nigerian just throwe face like say e no concern them if the money we set aside for tithes was actually donated to the NA I’m sure it would have gone far in the maintenance of the soldiers why aren't we running a military procurement/contractor/consultant company? I believe Nigeria has reached the level where we can develop our own weapons its not government that invents weapons its not the military either its people like you and me that invent these things then your defencive how are we protecting our streets our homes our working places why can’t we consult with counter terrorist officers on precautionary steps to take what campaign is our religious community organizing to discourage violence and terrorism or to save misguided dudes from becoming potential boko haram insurgents afterall its manpower that is the strength of BH and most of them are forcefully recruited or brainwashed we sef make we brainwash people into peace loving and law abiding citizens
So what would you prefer? To achieve these things with our own blood sweat and tears or to keep criticizing gov't from an arm chair and hoping that some day God will touch their hearts and make them remember us?
grin lmao op why don’t you do all the things you listed and see how hard it is, why did we now vote for the government in power if we should do everything our selves where the money sef to do all these abi na teeth you wan use do am?

The family of a teacher stabbed to death at a school in Leeds have described her as a "dedicated wife" and "natural mother".
Ann Maguire, 61, was fatally stabbed in her classroom at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds in April.
A 15-year-old boy is due to go on trial later this year accused of her murder.
Mrs Maguire's family have spoken for the first time ahead of a public memorial service at Leeds Town Hall on Monday.
Her husband, Don, 62, said he hoped the service, organised by Leeds City Council and the Roman Catholic diocese of Leeds, would reflect her life and the kind of person she was.

Ann Maguire had taught at Corpus Christi College for 40 years
"She was a beautiful, dedicated, hard working individual, so I hope that and the fact she had a very strong faith is reflected in this service."
'Wonderful teacher'
Mrs Maguire, who had two daughters and had raised her two nephews, had taught at the college for 40 years and had been due to retire this year.
Following her death many tributes were placed outside the school by past and present pupils.
Mr Maguire said: "I remember the very empty hollow sick feeling inside and reading those messages made us feel so comforted and so able to understand others were feeling the pain as well."
He added he had received a great deal of solace from them and "treasured" the tributes and messages.
Andrew Poole, one of two nephews raised by Mrs Maguire, said: "If one message came through it was always about Ann's dedication to her students and her willingness to go the extra mile for any one individual student."
One daughter, Emma, said: "I think what we took away was that we have so many of our own stories and memories of mummy and we are so grateful people chose to share theirs."

Mr Maguire described his late wife as a "beautiful and dedicated" individual
Mr Maguire said: "Ann was a very loving dedicated wife and a natural mother and it was her natural mothering qualities that I think made Ann such a wonderful teacher."
The family have established a charity, The Ann Maguire Arts Educational Fund, to provide bursaries and funding for the personal development of people under 18 years of age.
It has already raised more than £20,000.
Her daughters, Kerry and Emma, said: "Mum had a special talent for developing opportunities for young people and we hope the charity will do the same.
"We really want mummy's legacy to encompass everything she did in her work and the person she was to so many people.
"She taught for 40 years and affected thousands of pupils' lives and we feel her legacy should be something that continues this work and what she gave to people."
The memorial service at Leeds Town Hall is due to start at 12:00 BST on Monday
