Flood disaster: Lagos evacuates 681 residents
News Oct 11, 2010
*FG denied us ecologocal funds, says Fashola By Olasunkanmi Akoni & Monsur Olowoopejo
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, directed the immediate relocation of 681 people residing in the flooded area of Ajegunle in Ikorodu occasioned by the release of water from the Ogun-Osun River basin to tributaries.
Fashola assured the displaced residents that the situation was already receiving due attention, adding that a temporary relief camp had been prepared to accommodate them pending when the state government would re-allocate new land to property owners.
Ajegunle Ikorodu Flood About 1,000 residents have already being displaced since the occurrence of the disaster in the last two weeks which has already posed epidemic threat to the area and its environ.
Fashola handed out the directive to relevant state authorities during an inspection tour of the flooded area. He, however, blamed the Federal Government, particularly the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, for negligence and lack of response to earlier notifications by the state government on the need to support the state government through the Ecological Fund intervention to avert the impending danger.
Meanwhile, NEMA has provided relief materials for the victims to cushion the effect of the flood.
While sympathising with the victims, Fashola who led other executive members to the scene, implored them to be patient and not panic in any way so as not to aggravate the situation, adding that the area was a disaster zone of no small means.
Fashola speaks He said: “NEMA bringing relief materials here is immaterial because we applied for ecological funds from the Federal Government since the last three years which was not given to us.
“We have raised this issue with the Federal Government to grant us ecological funds to deal with this matter decisively. With that we would have averted this problem. But that is behind us. “We appeal to residents of this area to cooperate with the state government. There is high water body in the lagoon here. It has been raining all over the world and there is no place for this water to flow to, so this is nature at work.
A submerged building “Experts have advised us to wait for this water to subside as nature would take its course. But what we can do is to work together to mitigate the consequences. One of what we are going to do is that we have enumerated about 681 people that have been displaced here and we have built a relief camp in anticipation of this kind of disaster.
“We would move them immediately today (yesterday). The Commissioners for Special Duties, Health and Environment, General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASDEMA, will move those families and relocate them. “The truth is that this is not a problem that the government alone can deal with. We need everybody. The emergency toll lines of 767 and 112 are still functional. More emergency help lines would be established, helicopters surveillance would be deployed.”
Commissioner, NEMA make promises Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Muiz Banire, also assured that everything was being done to put the situation under control adding that the water has affected the road: “and we are doing everything possible to abate it.” Speaking earlier, Coordinator of NEMA, South-West, Alhaji Muhammed Bida, who was also at the site, said all relief materials had been brought to the affected people.
“NEMA will do everything possible to put up request to the presidency for necessary intervention,” he promised.
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/flood-disaster-lagos-evacuates-681-residents/ Without flood, the traffic there alone is enough. It's a sad one, cause i couldn't believe my eyes.
I didn't know anything like that was happening until yesterday when i took a bike to ikorodu. I was so happy that i didn't use the bus.

Other parties maybe corrupt, but not as PDP. The difference will surely appear.

ayo84: has anyone seen the video of the so called niger delta militants :
those so called fighters in that video are not real niger delta militants they are hired goons, who have collected an ex general's looted money, all in a bid to ferment trouble and cause commottion on nigeria and make it unstable and start claiming that goodluck cannot rule this country
please look at that video very well, some one is financing these boys and they arent real militants. The spokesman's '', and whatever, '' naunces imply that he is well educated, certainly not in the creeks. did you see the MEND emblem, brand new, someone has financed their uniforms, their brand new guns, everything. Like you said even the wooden structures are very well built, well paid for. Some one is financing these folks to cause havoc, someone very conniving, an evil genius with a lot of money to burn.
1. The place was a new place 2. The uniform they had were all new/fresh. The guns are most fresh, the looked too organized to be militants that we know that accepted the amnesty(thats if u realy saw the occassion), implying that they had been trained by someone somewhere for this purpose or even sth more to be seen later 3. The location was somewhere south; giving the palm trees and rivers 4. The spokesman cannot be a true militant cos he showed signs of : planning, maturity, education only very fear of such go all length to the creeks 5. The place is being built by a competent carpenter, there is no sign to show its done in a hurry a its a "make do" 6. The first time a lady would go to such a dangerous (assuming) in Nigeria given that most militants are womanizers, ill-behaved etc 7. He said the attacks are on just 48 hours before the Bomb blast at Abuja :signifying that some other group was on that mission and it will be linked to them based on this video "else how come the video just 48 hours to the event"
For goodness sake, who are these people trying to deceive Of course yes, good or bad, you need money. |

Oya catch and jail dem naa.u see that's where the problem is. They arrested a leader and they already threatened to unleash more trouble. I'm not they shouldn't stop them, but what are the governments doing to make sure this does not rise again? |

yeswecan: You are not in your right state of mind . . . Is Niger Delta's problem different from that of Nigeria's and who do you think the bombing affects? guess who? common Nigerians- the politician's child has to be abroad for education or managing a business there. Tell me one politician that has been killed or even affected from the operations of Mends, mention one or don't we have political leaders in the ND region. I am from that region and i will tell you straight-up that region bags the highest electoral fraud and corrupt politicians from the History of Nigeria.
Show me a place in Nigeria that has constant electricity since that's your measuring rod. Nigerians are suffering - FG formed a commission specially structured to bring development to Niger Delta, this commission is led and administered by locals . . FG also formed a ministry specially for Niger Delta development - not to mention the state allocation formula where ND states has the highest state allocation . . .
People just don't get it. FG has done all it can to foster development in Niger Delta region - it is in the hands of the people to check the ministry and NDDC and question their governors.
There is no such thing as true federalism in Nigeria and we cannot have that because of our political history. So how do we end it now? |
Politics › Re: Expect More Bombing, Mend Threatens by mrofficial(m): 1:35pm On Oct 05, 2010 |
yeswecan: I have not dismissed the possibilities of Mend been used for political reasons for they has already proved to be bunch of hungry fellow searching for survival. I have not seen or heard of freedom fighters kidnapping for money – or demand for oil-wells- does illegal oil business and not even a single social responsibility to the community they claim to represent.
These are not freedom fighters but criminals who will stop at nothing because this is what they do to acquire houses and cars in other part of the country – not where they represent. It is just sad that some Nigerians could fall for this Yes and they say, please give us food that will may stop. Silly you, always looking for excuse. |
Politics › Re: Expect More Bombing, Mend Threatens by mrofficial(m): 1:29pm On Oct 05, 2010 |
the governments will continue to prolong this issue if they do not do the right thing. One militant die, them born another one. Why can't they do what is right and end this. They've been milking the whole country for years now, ordinary electricity is privilege. Na wa ooo, now they are arresting looking for bombers showing smartness to continue their regular stealing. One thing i believe is that, if they do not meet the demand of the Naija Deltans things like this will not stop, because an idle mind is the devil's workshop. |

Chuks84: Kudos to the hacker! Its sad to see people castigating this fella, making asinine statements like "who views the website anyway", "he's a jobless juvenile". What you fail understand is that he's just making a statement. Our leaders ought to know that we're watching and we're not keeping silent anymore while they despoil this nation. And best of all, he chose a very harmless way to do so considering the events of yesterday. So instead of sitting on your lazy backsides criticizing one who cares about our nation, try to make a change! Nice one. Help me tell them very well. |

He's the one telling you to do that when you should have been the one to tell him that.
My brother's wife asked him for hist facebook password and did that herself. It's something of the mind, really. But sometimes it will foreclose temptations. GRHHHHHHHHH! Push them guys back from taking any steps and vice versa.
I wouldn't ask you to do that, I will ask for the password.
I have the password of my girlfriend's facebook, not privacy invasion though.
She did put the "engaged" status herself pointing to my profile. |
