PoliticsRe: Do Our Politicians Have Shame And Conscience? by MrWhy1(op): 11:00am On Oct 11, 2011
I dont tink so, cos there re many of them after bin arrested, And brought 2 the front of camera, U see them smiling like someone who jst got a new bride, I think this is one of the reasons we nid boko haram,
That smile they always showcase is an insult to every Nigerian--born and unborn-- dignity.

If it wasn't the way boko haram went about their operations targeting innocent civilians in between. If they had stick to the obvious right target with a honest secular agenda, they would have won sympathy from many Nigerians.
PoliticsRe: Do Our Politicians Have Shame And Conscience? by MrWhy1(op): 10:41am On Oct 11, 2011
@Gbawe

You are on point. That is the problem. Putting those who have questionable records at the helm of affairs. They contaminate our culture with utter greed by legitimizing bribery and corruption.

Before in many Nigeria communities, when you do something shameful, you will be ex-communicated by the community through value consensus, even your family will to some extent bear the brunt of your disgraceful act.

But in this present day Nigeria, you will hear someone proudly say , "If I became a politician, me too go loot my own share". Some even go much further believing that "Money is everything and better than education". Our values are fast eroding and this is a dangerous trend for the future leaders-- the Youth--who make up about 70% of our population.
PoliticsDo Our Politicians Have Shame And Conscience? by MrWhy1(op): 10:03am On Oct 10, 2011
I have been thinking about this, sometimes I wonder if they are humans.

Let me give you a tale of two scenarios.

When a politician in most western, some Asian, Latin American and even African countries are caught in illegal act or breaches code of ethics. They quickly resign and lay low because their integrity and dignity have been severely damaged. They shy away from Camera and publicly apologize to their country men.

But in Nigeria particularly, the reverse is the case. When a politician is caught, they parade in front of camera's smiling with a huge hip on their shoulder. They try to justify their wrong and go the extent of raping the justice system. They see this as being smart and tough. They go back to their hometowns and villages and are welcome and celebrated as heroes.

Is illegality becoming culturally accepted in our society?
Where is the dignity? Where is the conscience?

I keep wondering.

Guy, I foresee danger. With your list eeh, if things continue the way they are, Hyper inflation is inevitable. That is what caused many revolutions--both bloody and peaceful-- in many countries. I don't wanna imagine how ours will be.
BusinessRe: Naira Drops to N200 To A US Dollar by MrWhy1(m): 6:44pm On Oct 09, 2011
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting the same result.

The current system of Forex does not favor a Banana Republic like Nigeria one bit because of weak manufacturing base.

If the economy is not fundamentally restructured and diversified, the Naira will fall further to even N500 to a US Dollar in a couple of years. The odds are against us and with the falling oil price, the future is gloomy.

Sometimes I wonder what we want as a people. I've always thought of it. We say we need a strong leader, a good leader, a purpose driven leader, a fearless leader, a this leader and a that leader. But when one assumes that role we're too quick to cast silly and unfair judgement on him. Because we're a special breed of impatient beings. I just tire. What are the factors or criteria for qualities of a leader as mentioned above? And if you know them can you say its high time this president packs up? I just tire for this country people. Especially those wey no even leave for we country dey contribute nonsense because them read one silly blog post or the other.
This is a public forum where everyone is entitled to their views and opinions. If you think that the facts presented by a poster is baseless, all you need to do is present your own facts to counter it. Your approach to this looks like you are letting emotions take over your reasoning.

Anyone who comes out to be a leader should have it at the back of his/her mind that his every move will be scrutinized. It is one of the sacrifices that comes with the job. There is an adage that says "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". To add to that, "If you can stand the heat, then confidently reassure the populace that you can as their leader that you are.

The former Japanese Prime Minister couldn't confidently reassure his people and the rest is history despite the fact that Japan is one of the most developed countries in the world.

BusinessRe: Ban On Use Of CBN's Dollars By Oil Companies by MrWhy1(m): 8:39pm On Oct 07, 2011
Good question.

From my understanding, it is a good policy move on the part of CBN. The CBN forex reserves is vital for the stability and strengthening of the naira by regulating the money supply. There is limited amount of hard currencies in circulation and should be left for average Nigerians that needs it for international trade and other things. Meanwhile, if these oil companies, most of whom are foreign, are left to purchase huge chunk of forex that was pump into the economy by the CBN to benefit the common man, it will increase the value of hard currencies and the Naira will depreciate, thereby causing inflation, eroding the value of your savings and wages.

Since we import most of what we use, the importers who supposedly bought hard currencies at higher rate will increase the prices of their items and it will ultimately affect budgets of many Nigerian households.

But the core facts remain that we need to diversify our economy to attract more foreign exchange and more importantly prop up our manufacturing industry for a long term solution. CBN is always hanging in the balance because we rely hugely on foreign exchange we get from our crude exports which is a very very volatile source.

That is my 2cent bro.

@PointB

What the government at the order of the president needs to do is create a favorable environment for the privitalization of the power sector and you will see countless companies vying for a stake. In fact, many private companies have proposed including a Brazilian,French companies and many others. But those short-sighted bureaucrats in Abuja are making things difficult for their own interests.

I am not trying to put all the blame solely on GED because this power problem has been piling up for years. However, the mistake he did and continue to do is promise things without getting all the facts, examining the fundamental problems and the time frame necessary to accomplish his goals. If you want to enact radical change in Nigeria as he set out to do, you need radical way of thinking doing things. The system in Nigeria today is a very complex system that needs a strong personality to handle. Having observed GED for sometime, his policies, choice of words,posture. He seems to lack the tough leadership skills and more importantly the charisma to address such a paradox called Nigeria.

Those people who come here and say, there has been power improvement in my area and so on and so forth. Let us stop worshiping Mediocrity for once in this our beloved country.

@PointB

Your criticism is vague and highly subjective. It is quite obvious that you may not be current about what is happening in your Domian. Couple of weeks ago, Barth Nnaji said it would cost $10billion annually over the course of 10 years which is = $100billion to increase the power supply to 45,000 megawatts. The question is, can the Nigerian government come up with that amount? Well, we have the resources to generate such amount but there is virtually no infrastructure to tap into that resources.

The best bet is to wholly Privatize the power sector like other developed countries( GE in American, etc) and see if private companies won't want to expand their investments by delivering the much needed services. Have you forgotten telecommunication privitalization? Does GED have the political will to do so? Can he do so? A lot of hoodlums at the top do not want to see that happen, because it threatens their interest! Do you think people like Dangote wants to see a common man start producing cement in his backyard tomorrow? Do you think generator importers wants to be put out of business?

Until a fearless leader who owes nothing to no one emerges and take on the special interest, the bad saga playing out everyday on the national level will only continue and we the average Joe's of the Nigerian social system will continue to live in stone age while others advance into the futuristic age.
WebmastersRe: Google Nigeria Now Available In Pidgin English ("Google Naija") by MrWhy1(m): 3:29pm On Oct 07, 2011
We were fiercely beating about making Pidgin an official lingua franca in Naija to unite tribes and also use it to teach at our schools. Dis big oyibo gramma no dey let our kids grasp various concepts relating to different subjects. Since pidgin is widely understood by everyone in Niaja, our linguist and other literary figures can work towards constructing, organizing and formalizing the syntax.

If Google(American co-operation) can realize this fact, then why do these Egoists in our society keep saying dat pidgin na for local aje kpakos?

BusinessRe: Naira Hits All-Time Low Against The US Dollar by MrWhy1(m): 12:34pm On Oct 07, 2011
The problem with some people on Nairaland is that they take serious issues for granted. Instead of analyzing issues objectively and in depth. They engage in vague criticism and character assassination. Even though, overspending wasn't mentioned in the article, it is one of the factors that affects the subject matter in the article.

There is a fundamental problem with our economy. Nigeria gets her foreign exchange mostly by selling oil in the international markets and remittance from Nigerians in Diaspora and to some extent Yahoo!Yahoo! boys(unjustifiable). It is very apparent that variations in supply and demand of crude products,which is the major source flow of foreign exchange into the country affects the national income. We import almost everything into this country. Importers and other international travelers scramble for the limited flow of hard currencies in circulation and that contributes to the fall of the naira and increase the prices of imported products.

Furthermore, Inflation increases, the value of your savings diminishes, wages remain stagnant, the common man suffers. CBN prints more money, thereby prompting the Government to overspend(which is what they know how to do best) without putting into consideration that inflation will hurt the lower strata of the society.

Does GED understand how the economy works? That is a question that needs to be addressed. I think he is under the control of people who are manipulating the economy.

This is day light robbery by our politicians. They do not need to point guns to our head to steal from us. All they need is initiate bad policies and milk us dry. The worst part is that a large segment of the Nigeria population don't understand basic economics and finance or are too cowardice to challenge the status quo.

Therefore, the suffering and smiling continues------Fela.

As Malcolm X said "The future belongs to those who prepare for it today".
PoliticsRe: Nigeria To Face Harsh Economic Times - Soludo by MrWhy1(m): 11:54am On Oct 06, 2011
Hey Journalist, you mean our pharmaceutical sector is worth only $1? Who wrote that article?

This is simple international economics Soludo is trying to lecture us about.

How can you get 95% of foreign exchange through oil, you supply to foreign buyers and expect your economy to be fundamentally strong?

How can a country of about 200million people generate 5000 megawatts of electricity and expect the manufacturing industry to be viable and competitive? South Africa, a country of about 45million people generates about 50,000 megawatts of electricity.

When the recession hits again, there will be shortage of hard currencies(dollars, euros) because of less demand in oil. In turn, that will depreciate the naira further and make import more expensive, thereby causing inflation while wages remain stagnant or even slashed . Unfortunately, the Nigerian common man would be the one to suffer from lack of visionary on the part of our leaders.

@ekt_bear

Isn't cost effective where I live.

Was on the market in 2007 for a car. Ended up buying non-electric. Would have cost me 3k-4k more, even with the subsidy and tax break to buy the electric.
Who knows, maybe the dynamics in the UK are different
In France, they are putting out electric Taxis for rent. In Israel, by 2015, they have plans to install electric stations in all part of the country. In Denmark, the Israelis are undertaken the same projects there. Germany, the same, watch documentaries on DWTV and you will see for yourself, gigantic projects going on. In North Africa, they are building a massive solar panels to supply the whole western Europe and further eastern Europe and North African countries with electricity. The USA that buys 1/4 of Nigerian crude are given out incentives to entrepreneurs and pumping money into research. It is just a matter of little time before you start seeings these new technologies evolved and claim its place like never before. Who ever thought Computers and the Internet would evolved and spread so fast in its short history?

Man, if we continue to remain in our slumber, before we wake up, others will already be living in futuristic Age, while we are stuck in the Stone Age. Our leaders have to start diversifying or else expect an inevitable violent revolutions in many parts of Africa.

Hello sister,

Tell your potential suitor the truth. If he truly loves you for who you are, he will understand. Maybe as time goes on, God may open your womb and bless you with a child. Or if the reverse is the case, you both may as well adopt. A child is a child as long as you show him/her motherly/fatherly Love.

If I truly and deeply loved a girl, I will stick with her through thick and thin. That is my honest opinion.

Good luck

NIGERIA, A nation where wrong is increasingly being justified. Where those who got their money through illicit means are seen as heroes and glorified. Where the Youths put instant wealth and gratification over knowledge and long-term planning. Where status, nepotism, cronyism, religious fanaticism, tribalism and every other type of negative isms is the order of the day. A nation where Natural and Human resources is a curse rather than an asset. Where religious leaders prey on the weakness of the vulnerable and extort the little they have. Where stupidity is seen as a normal thing.

A place where intellectuals go to quench. A place where education is becoming a liability instead of an asset. Where a bookworm is looked down upon and caricatured to go "Hustle" for money and stop wasting time reading books because in Nigeria "Money is everything". A place where corrupt leaders, officials thrive because of sycophants. A nation where an aspiring Youth would gladly say man if I became politician "me too go loot my own share". A nation of cowards that continue to deteriorate every day. Putting all that together, how do you measure it , A proud fool at 51 or proudly independent at 51?

With the way things are going, I foresee a practical failed state( because it is already a virtual failed state), a radical change(that could be violent) or the inevitable breakup of the artificial nation called NIGERIA!!!

The kind of ignorance exhibited by some on this thread is mind-blowing. For those of you who is saying this isn't your business, it could happen to anybody and the fact that you are a minority increases the chance of being convicted. The American justice system is flawed. The justice system of the southern states in America are notorious for such practices. In fact, there is deep seated racial reservations against blacks in those states. Go and read their history. Although I am not trying to defend Troy Davies because I don't know all the facts. The truth remains that blacks are wrongly victimized by the justice system.

And for some people to come on here and spew their ignorance about issues that is so deep shows why blacks are being victimized all over the world. Think for your self and do your own research and not what the western media feeds you all the time.

Sorry, may be I misunderstood your intro or may be in my thinking its not the best way to introduce those beautiful points.
However, in my view nothing is wrong with the idea of partnering with world bank, although I wounder how it will workout when a company like Michelin stopped manufacturing tyres in Nigeria in 2007 while they expand their factories in China.
Well, may be after Electric Power stabilization in the Nigeria in 20-- ,then we can compete with China in abid to take some factories from China. That is if China decides to go a slumber.
That intro was a figure of speech. Nairalanders has always been serious for the most part. Anyways, you make a good case and recognize that she is living under illusion.
