The Nigeria Labour Congress has warned the Federal Government against removing fuel subsidy in the country. President of the NLC, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, argued in a statement on Tuesday that the disagreement between the Federal Government and the marketers on the exact amount of money owed the marketers, indicated that the current fuel scarcity could be a ploy to remove fuel subsidy. Wabba said the NLC’s opposition to the removal of the fuel subsidy had not changed. He urged the Federal Government to settle debts owed marketers if any to address the issue of fuel scarcity and long fuel queues in the country. The NLC President lamented that the long fuel scarcity had continued eat into the nation’s productive hours as workers continued to spend long hours in search of fuel. He stated that some people had taken advantage of the scarcity to exploit Nigerians, who were being made to pay between N120 to N130 for a litre of fuel. He said the Federal Government, which presides over the Petroleum Industry, had a responsibility to address the disturbing development. He said, “This painful experience Nigerians have been subjected to has been exacerbated by the embarrassing tirade between the fuel marketers and the Federal Government, represented by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on the actual amount owed the marketers. “This protracted haggling by this major stakeholders even on the total amount owed, points to a conspiracy that perhaps, the scarcity may have been ignited by those clamouring for the removal of subsidy on petroleum. ”Our position on this has not changed as we remain opposed to the removal of petroleum subsidy. “If government is truly owing marketers, they should pay them immediately as the long queues at fuel stations have led to loss of lots of productive hours since workers are either unable to get to work or spend long hours searching for fuel. “The scarcity has also led to sharp practices with workers paying between N120 to N130 per litre at some filling stations. For those commuting by public transport, they now pay more to get to work even when there are no increases in salaries.” Wabba added that the NLC was worried about the worsening scarcity of fuel in Abuja, the South- West and other states of the federation. www.punchng.com/news/nlc-warns-fg-against-fuel-subsidy-removal/ Cc: lalasticlala, barcanista, politricks |

President Goodluck Jonathan has announced the appointment of some key members of the Peoples Democratic Party as Chairmen of the Governing Councils of some federal universities, with three weeks left for his administration. While a former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, is the Chairman, Governing Council of Federal University in Kashere, Gombe State; a former Deputy Governor of Osun State and ex- Minister of State for Defence, Chief Olusola Obada, heads the Governing Council of the Federal University in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. A former Chief of Army Staff during the regime of the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiya (retd.), was also appointed Chairman, Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas in Bonny, Rivers State. Although Daniel and Bamaiyi were absent at the inauguration ceremony, Obada and others received their letters of authority. At the event held on Tuesday in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, inaugurated the Chairmen and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Governing Councils of 12 new federal universities and four new polytechnics and Board of National Library of Nigeria. He cautioned them against undue interference in the day-to-day running of the institutions, adding that governing councils found wanting would be dissolved, even though they have not reached the constitutionally required provision of four years for universities and three years for polytechnics. The Minister said, “Governing Councils should ensure that the funds allocated by government are judiciously utilized. They should also come up with ideas that will generate more revenue, outside government allocations. “In the course of your tenure, you should ensure that proper attention and priority are accorded to the relevant University laws, Polytechnics Act and government guidelines in the appointment of principal officers and other staff. You must ensure that transparency, probity and due process are followed in the selection and appointment so that the best and the right candidates emerge for these positions. “The idea that the Chief Executive or any principal officer should come from its locality is erroneous and alien to the system and should not be allowed to becloud your decisions. Merit should be the watchword and guiding principle.” The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, cautioned the Governing Councils against exhibiting domineering attitude. The NUC boss urged them to play their roles and strengthen the structure of the nation’s universities. www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-appoints-daniel-abachas-aide-varsities-council-chairmen/ Cc: lalasticlala, ubaobi |
Over 70 per cent of the workers in the Federal Ministry of Finance, including top officials, have high blood pressure as a result of excessive stress at work. The Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the Permanent Secretary, Anastasia Daniel-Nwaobia, who spoke in Abuja at the commissioning of the Federal Ministry of Finance Welfare Facilities, including crèche and clinic, said many of the workers in the Finance Ministry were affected. The Minister said even the Minister of State, Bashir Yuguda, and Permanent Secretary had hypertension as confirmed after a recent medical test conducted in the ministry. Although the Minister later apologized to the Minister of State and the Permanent Secretary for disclosing their health status publicly, she attributed the development to the stress the top managers and staff in the ministry go through in the course of discharging their duties. “It sounds unbelievable. But, it’s true. The three of us are on medication. At times, we have to be in the office as late as 1 a.m. looking for how the country will get money to finance her activities,” she said. She said now that the clinic has been established and certified by the Federal Ministry of Health, the staff can take full advantage of the facility to take care of themselves. The idea of the crèche, the Minister said, was to make the ministry family- friendly. On her part, Ms. Daniel-Nwaobia said the medical test became necessary after one of the workers in the ministry who had an emergency medical situation, was rushed to the hospital and was later diagnosed of high blood pressure. Subsequently, the Permanent Secretary said the Ministry approached the Federal Ministry of Health to send a medical team to conduct a compulsory medical examination for the entire workers. After weeks of intensive medical examination by the team, Ms. Daniel- Nwaobia said the result showed that more than 70 per cent of the workers were hypertensive as a result of stress at work. She said the decision to establish the clinic and the crèche within the premises of the headquarters of the Ministry became necessary to ensure that the medical needs of the workers were met, while a place would be available for their wards to stay during official hours. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/182495-search-for-funding-for-nigeria-giving-us-hypertension-okonjo-iweala.html Cc: lalasticlala |

Respite may have come the way of Lagos residents as eight vessels with various types of petroleum products arrived Lagos ports yesterday lending credence to Federal Government’s assertion that marketers are holding Nigerians to ransom over refined products. One would be wondering how the vessels would be arriving Nigeria two days after the government paid N156 billion to marketers when it would naturally take weeks or months to bring in such cargoes from overseas. But according to a bulletin by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the petroleum products that came in include base oil, kerosene and petrol. The publication further revealed that three other ships also arrived with rice in bags and containers. It said that NPA was expecting the arrival of 27 ships to the Lagos ports between May 4 and 30. The publication said 13 of the expected ships are to sail in with containers, while eight others are expected to arrive with food products. The food products, it disclosed, include rice, bulk sugar, bulk salt, frozen fish and bulk wheat. General cargoes are to be brought in four ships, while one ship each would will sail in with vehicles and kerosene. Nigerians have for over a week been jolted by petroleum scarcity, which reportedly arose from the strike embarked upon by oil marketers protesting over N156 billion debts owed them by government. But only last Thursday, the Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, paid the said debt while urging the marketers not to hold Nigerians to ransom. Even as at the weekend, there were still controversy over the actual debts outstanding in their favour. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=117832 |

A major crisis has hit the AllProgressives Congress in Enugu State after report emerged on Friday that the APC National Vice- Chairman, South-East, Mr. Emma Eneukwu, allegedly slapped the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Okey Ezea, following an argument over ministerial slot in the forthcoming Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. The alleged incident happened on Thursday during a meeting of South-East APC leaders at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. It was gathered that the closed-door meeting was chaired by Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and had Senator Chris Ngige, Senator Osita Izunaso, Gen. J. O. J. Okoloagu (retd.), and others in attendance. Ezea disclosed the development in a text message that was forwarded to journalists in Enugu on Friday. Apparently, the meeting discussed the sharing of key appointments as Ezea, in the SMS, said Eneukwu slapped him because he (Ezea) told the South-East leaders that Nsukka zone, where he hailed from, should produce the minister. He accused Eneukwu, who is from Udi, Enugu West Senatorial Zone, of wanting the ministerial slot for himself and trying to actualise the ambition through violence. The text message read, “Emma Eneukwu slapped me today because I told South-East leaders that Nsukka has not been minister since 1999. “He did this before Rochas, Ngige, Izunaso, J. O. J, Gen. Eze, Ucha etc. “I just said the truth and requested justice and equity in the affairs of our party and Enugu State. “Emma (Eneukwu) wants to be minister by violence. Emma is from Udi Local Government Area which has been producing minister since 2007, including the incumbent, Chinedu Nebo.” When our correspondent contacted him on the telephone afterwards, Ezea confirmed that the text message actually emanated from him. But Eneukwu denied slapping Ezea, adding that such incident never happened. He said, “I am surprised about that, nothing like that happened, I am very surprised. “That story is alien to me; I don’t know anything about it. “Maybe it is a calculated attempt to mar my image. I didn’t attack anybody, I am not a thug. I don’t fight.” Asked what transpired at the said meeting, he said, “We went to see Buhari, that was all I knew. “Nobody was talking about appointment. “We will not be talking about appointment when the party has not decided on the positions that should come to the zone. We have not known the positions allocated to the zone.” Our correspondent gathered that the alleged incident has thrown the Enugu State chapter of the party into confusion. Some party members, who our correspondent sighted at the party’s state secretariat in Enugu, discussed the incident in hushed tones. But they refused to comment on the matter when our correspondent sought their views. www.punchng.com/news/apc-chieftain-slaps-enugu-gov-candidate-over-ministerial-slot/ |

Sometimes I wish there is no advent of social media in Nigeria, a lot of conflicting information going around on a daily basis. On GMB, whether he took responsibility or waived it on other party...the reality is it's undemocratic and unconstitutional to bar a media house in covering events. And all this I will... I will... statement should be managed to lower the expectation of Nigerians because this is not a military era. These I will... I will... Statement is autocratic in nature and somebody needs to remind him is no more in 1980...where you give order and the zombies follow. |
A39-year-old South African, Nosisi Nqgula, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly smuggling foreign currencies worth about N71.7m to Nigeria. It was learnt that the suspect was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos with $373,725 and €2,120 concealed inside packs of oats. PUNCH Metro gathered that the discovery was made during an inward screening of passengers on a South African airline flight enroute from Johannesburg. The agency said two Nigerians ─ Damian Akamelu and Prophet Cyprian Chigere ─ were also being interrogated in connection with the seizure. Nqgula said she was sent by a Nigerian to deliver the money to one Akamelu. “I live in Johannesburg. I was given a bag by a Nigerian to deliver to Damian Akamelu,”she said. The NDLEA Commander at the airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, said, “The mode of concealment presents reasonable grounds for money laundering. “Five packs of oats were found to contain $373,725 and €2,120. Two Nigerians are also being interrogated.” The NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, commended the officers for the seizure. www.punchng.com/metro-plus/safrican-woman-smuggles-n710m-into-nigeria/ |
