•No Going Back On Fayose’s Impeachment – Ekiti Lawmakers The 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers of Ekiti State House of Assembly yesterday said that the state governor, Mr Ayo Fayose can only delay justice in the ongoing impeachment move against him. Addressing journalists in Osogbo on how they were prevented from entering the state to perform their constitutional responsibility by an arm of the military allegedly led by one Gen. Aliyu Momoh at the Osun/Ekiti State border in Itawure, the majority leader, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Churchill Adedipe, who was flanked by the speaker, Dr Adewale Ominrin and 17 other APC lawmakers, said that Fayose cannot run from the inevitable. The lawmakers accused Fayose of inciting the people of the state to start attacking their interests following their decision to fix their sitting for yesterday to continue investigation into allegations of constitutional breaches levelled against him. He explained that the vehicles conveying the lawmakers were prevented from entering Ekiti at Itawure, a town about 40 minutes drive to Ado Ekiti by heavily armed soldiers, whom Adedipe claimed were getting orders from Brig. Gen. Aliyu Momoh, brigade commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure. Adedipe said for over two hours, the soldiers prevented them from proceeding to Ado Ekiti, adding that information gathered by some of the lawmakers who made calls to people waiting for them at the state assembly indicated that Governor Fayose had flooded the premises of the assembly with thugs. |
A middle-aged man, identified as Modupe Olaiya, was yesterday killed in Efon Alaaye Ekiti, headquarters of Efon local government area of Ekiti State, as members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) staged violent protests against the plot by 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers to impeach Governor Ayodele Fayose. A source close to the town confirmed to journalists in Ado Ekiti that the incident occurred when the APC lawmakers who were said to be coming from Osun State rammed into the barricade mounted by the protesters at Ita Ore, a border town between Ekiti and Osun states. The police were said to have fired several gunshots to scare the protesters, who had already taken over the Ado-Ita-Ore-Ilesa road with the victim reportedly sustaining gunshot injuries in the process. Efforts made by the APC lawmakers to gain entry into Ado-Ekiti, the state capital to hold a sitting was however, not successful, as soldiers stationed at Ita Ore were said to have stopped them from entering the state. Three persons were said to have been arrested as the police patrol van intercepted a Hilux van marked AA 363 YEK, conveying gun-wielding thugs to the Assembly at Secretariat Road in Ado Ekiti. Human and vehicular movements were halted for several hours as all major roads leading to Ekiti were blocked while the protesters also took over the streets of major towns like Efon Alaaye, Iworoko, Aisegba, Ikere, Ise, Ogotun Igbemo, in protest against the move to remove Fayose from office. Most government offices and private shops were under lock and key in the state capital, while some SSS 3 students, who are presently writing their West African Examinations Council outside the capital city were turned back by the thugs. The protesters had massed at major spots in the state including Ajilosun, Ijigbo, Secretariat Road, Okesa, Ojumose and Old Garage as early as 6.30am, blocked the roads with planks and vehicles and made bonfires to make human and vehicular movements difficult for hours. The police commissioner, Mr Taiwo Lakanu, had deployed Armoured Personnel Carriers and personnel to all the affected towns and troubled spots, while the sealed House of Assembly complex was manned by heavily armed policemen, who kept vigil at the complex due to the violent nature of the protests. The violent protest was believed to have been fuelled by the rumour that the APC lawmakers, led by the embattled speaker, Hon Adewale Omirin were planning to hold a sitting where the issue of the notice of gross misconduct forwarded to the governor last Friday would be discussed. The head of service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka and organised labour under the leaderships of Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress, had besieged the Assembly in protest and warned the lawmakers against plunging the state into violence. The organised labour in a statement signed by NLC secretary, Comrade Ade Obatoye, TUC secretary, Comrade Joseph Adebayo and JNC secretary, Comrade Oladele Ayodeji, enjoined the entire workforce to see the present development as a way of fomenting trouble in the state and putting their lives at risk. Also, the people of Igbemo Ekiti, led by Chief Agamago Adetunji had during a solidarity visit to the governor said: “We are solidly behind you. Ekiti people elected you to be their leader and no power under the earth can remove you”. The deputy governor, Dr Kolapo Olusola, who responded on behalf of the governor, likened the APC lawmakers’ action to the Biblical war of Egypt against the people of Israel, and expressed confidence that the governor would triumph over his enemies. http://leadership.ng/news/423818/impeachment-1-die-as-pdp-members-protest-in-ekiti |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday assured that it has identified the challenges facing the card reader and has taken adequate measures to address them ahead of the governorship elections this Saturday. The commission in a statement by its secretary, Mrs Augusta C. Ogakwu, also reaffirmed that Card Readers will be used for the April 11, 2015 elections. INEC had during the recent presidential election allowed manual accreditation of voters because of the challenges with the card readers. The chairman, INEC Information, Voter Education and Publicity Committee, Dr Chris O. Iyimoga, had on the eve of the presidential election, said “even though the Guidelines for the Conduct of the 2015 general elections provide that where card readers fail to work and cannot be replaced, elections in such Polling Units will be postponed to the following day, the scale of the challenge we have observed today has necessitated a reconsideration of this provision of the Guidelines. “The commission has, therefore, decided as part of the Guidelines for the Conduct of the 2015 general elections that in Polling Units where card readers have so failed to work, the Presiding Officer shall manually accredit voters by marking the register of voters, upon being satisfied that the person presenting a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is the legitimate holder of the card.” But the statement by the commission yesterday said that “the provision of the Guidelines for the conduct of the 2015 General Elections which outlined what is to be done if a Card Reader fails and cannot be replaced by the commission within a specified time frame (i.e. Reschedule the election to the next day) will be enforced. “The relaxation of the Guideline on 28th March, 2015 was only with respect to the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on that date. “The commission has reviewed the operation of the Card Reader in the 28th March Elections, identified the challenges and has taken adequate measures to address them.” http://leadership.ng/news/423569/guber-poll-inec-insists-on-card-readers |

Financial expert and strategist, Mr. Opeyemi Agbaje, has allayed the fears of Nigerians in certain corners that the election of General Muhammadu Buhari as the new President will lead to the removal of Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who was appointed last year by President Goodluck Jonathan. Agbaje, who is the Chief Executive Officer of RTC Advisory Services Limited, said the incoming administration will only effect some structural changes that may fit its plans and aspiration instead of removing the CBN Governor from office. He said the CBN will still be the same under Buhari but it may come under some pressure for closer scrutiny from the executive. “By and large, I do not expect a radical change in banking supervision under Buhari” Agbaje said in an interview on the sidelines of the launch of two books in commemoration of his 50th birthday in Lagos at the weekend. The books written by Opeyemi Agbaje, which were presented at the ceremony are: “Uncomplex Strategy “and “Democracy without Democrats.” In a panel discussion at the event, titled: Business Strategy in Nigeria, which was moderated by the celebrant, Opeyemi Agbaje, the discussants, Rasheed Olaoluwa, managing director of Bank of Industry, Tosin Runsewe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Mansard Group of Companies, Adedoyin Odunfa, Managing Director of Digital Jewels Limited, and Mezuo Nwuneli, Managing Director of Sahel Capital and AACE foods Limited, all gave Nigerians hope of a better future considering activities being carried out by their respective organisations. Rasheed Olaoluwa said BoI, as a development bank, is wired to render unhindered financial services and extension of loan facilities to Nigerians who intend to start or expand their business. He said Nigerian banks are safer now than ever before, as most of them now undertake large ticket transactions which were not the same 10 years ago. “A lot of banks in the country have become very strong. They are stronger in many aspects, in corporate governance, risk management and core banking. All these helped improved banking in the country as banks now face transactions in the region of billion dollars. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/04/buharis-govt-will-not-change-cbn-gov-expert/ |
Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday explained that there was no advice from the presidency asking him to resign from his position as the chief executive of the state. The governor, who was reacting to rumour doing the rounds that he had been directed by President Goodluck Jonathan to vacate the seat, urged his supporters not to be rattled by the impeachment fever, saying he would defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) this time round. Fayose, who stated this while featuring on a monthly programme tagged: ‘Mr Governor Explains’ on state-based media, said the impeachment threat against him did not rattle him in anyway, and that the plot against him was a threat against the people of the state who put him in the present position. He said what the APC wanted was to take over the state and plunge it into crisis the way they did after he left in 2006. The governor, who went philosophical and quoted copiously from the Holy Bible, said the plan to impeach him would fail the way it happened during his first term. “What actually infuriated the APC is that during the June 21 election, I gave them 16-0. Again, during the presidential election, I gave them 16-0 again. They know that I will give them 26-0 in next Saturday’s election. “Major-General Muhammadu Buhari emerged due to grace of God. If President Goodluck Jonathan had won, would he have gone to impeach Governor Rauf Aregbesola in Osun State or Senator Ibikunle Amosun in Ogun State?” The governor, however, insisted that Buhari’s emergence as president can only be a threat to his seat in the absence of the rule of law. “Even the former speaker, Hon Adewale Omirin, is not the speaker, so he cannot carry out any impeachment against me”, Fayose said. He urged the people of the state to come out en masse during the April elections and vote for the PDP to stem the tide of violence in the state. “My government is a people’s government and no power of darkness can remove me from office because we are doing what is right. Must I be in the APC for me to be governor? They were in the opposition before they took over and we will continue to exist together,” Fayose said. http://leadership.ng/news/423548/impeachment-notice-i-was-not-told-to-resign-fayose |

Despite the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently enmeshed in, serious crisis surrounding the N100 million released to the party for its candidates‘ campaign and mobilisation ahead last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections. The state leadership of the party was accused of trapping the money and refusing to release same to the candidates and the various chapters of the party thus prompting the vandalism meted against of the party secretariat on the eve of the elections by aggrieved members. It was gathered that the development has pitched the APC candidates against the state leadership, with the former blaming the latter for the party’s poor outing during last Saturday’s elections. But, state Chairman of the party, Usani Usani, told journalists at a press conference in Calabar that the money was actually provided, but that the money had not reached the secretariat when members came from all parts of the state to agitate that the money should be shared to them. But, some National Assembly candidates claim the leadership was not saying what exactly happened. Some of the candidates said they waited at the party secretariat on the eve of the election until 1.00 a.m. and nothing was heard about the funds to the candidates. The funds for candidates, it was reliably gathered, were to enable them perfect on their campaigns and enhance their chances of winning the polls in their various constituencies while that meant for the chapters was to enable the various chapters, wards and polling units mobilise support for the party as well as all necessary bills pertaining the elections. But that the state leadership only released the monies meant for the local government chapters leaving the candidates financially helpless thus attracting the ire of members. The party secretariat was vandalised as louvers, doors and other office equipment were destroyed in the melee. Following the development, the usually busy secretariat along Marian by Barracks Road in Okoi Arikpo Estate was deserted as staff and other members were panicky that there could be another outbreak of violence. One of the candidates in the southern senatorial district who complained about the development said all entreaties to get money from the state campaign secretariat failed as nobody responded to his request. Another candidate in the election who did not want his name in print said the money was sent through a top member of the party in Akwa Ibom State. “When we made efforts to inquire, we were again told that our state chairman had restricted the release of the funds to anybody. Up till now, as we speak, no candidate has been paid the money. “Even the funds meant for the elections proper were released very late to the various chapters and considering the elongated nature of the state where most of the local government areas are very far away from Calabar, the state capital, it became difficult to make any meaningful impact having arrived on the very polls day to mobilize for the polls,’’ the source said. However, some party chieftains, including the National Vice Chairman, South-south of the party, Prince Hilliard Eta, who hails from the state have called for investigation into the matter. A statement from his media aide, Bassey Ita, stated that: “The matter must be rigorously scrutinised and investigated by the party hierarchy at the national to enable it advance its course in the state. ‘’No form of retrogression, whatsoever, will be condoned by the party at all levels.’’ www.thisdaylive.com/articles/n100m-campaign-fund-crisis-rocks-c-river-apc/205747/ |

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) on Wednesday congratulated the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on his election. The two religious organisations in their separate congratulatory messages e-mailed to journalists in Abuja, also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for displaying quality Christian and democratic character and concessioning of defeat at the elections. The President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, in his message to Buhari also saluted Nigerians for a peaceful election and called for “harmony between Christians and Muslims in their quest for a prosperous Nigeria.” While praying for a prosperous future for Nigeria, Oritsejafor also praised President Jonathan for exhibiting good sportsmanship in conceding defeat to Buhari. The Secretary of NCEF, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel, in a message said: “Despite the enormous tension and apprehension that preceded the election, Nigerians have demonstrated political maturity that elections can be won and lost without recourse to violence or acrimony.” He congratulated Buhari on his victory at the elections, wishing him a successful tenure in office and “joined all Nigerians and indeed the entire world to commend his act of statesmanship, quality Christian and democratic character by his peaceful concession of defeat.” Emmanuel said: “It is encouraging to observe that Nigeria is maturing democratically. Today, we celebrate a sitting president, who after conceding defeat at the polls can say, ‘I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word’. Mr. President, we are proud of you. “The sterling Christian and democratic qualities aptly demonstrated by President Jonathan are in line with our objective that democracy must thrive and be firmly rooted in Nigeria. “The fruit of democracy is a peaceful, just, fair, and equitable society. These are the pillars upon which we can build a prosperous nation. We shall continue to work to entrench these values in our nation.” The body also encouraged all politicians in the country to play politics according to the admonition of Jonathan that “nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian.” www.thisdaylive.com/articles/can-commends-jonathan-congratulates-buhari/205756/ |
