Putting aside political interest, I think the police (in that state) should be commended for that feat. They've braised after receiving so much criticism from Nigerians. KUDoS! Cc: lalasticlala Redoil: |
The Borno Police Command said on Tuesday that it had uncovered 147 Unexploded Cluster Ordinances (UXOS) in a village near Jakana in Konduga Local Government Area of the state. Mr Clement Adoda, the Commissioner of Police, stated this at a news conference in Maiduguri. Adoda said that the items were uncovered on Feb. 8 by a combined Bomb Disposal Unit of the command. “I am glad to inform you that on Feb. 8 at about 9 a.m. ,147 unexploded UXOS were recovered at about two kilometers away from Auno village near Jakana in Konduga Local Government Area by a combined Bomb Disposal Unit of the command. “Policemen with troops attached to Jakana General area led by Captain Daniel Yakubu carried out the operation. “The explosives were sighted, recovered and destroyed in good time without injuries or damages to lives and property,” Adoda said. He said the command had also recovered another unexploded ordinance at the residence of the state NYSC Director. “The Bomb Disposal Unit also recovered an unexploded ordinance suspected to have been launched during the Feb. 1, Boko Haram foiled attack on Maiduguri, at the residence of the state NYSC Director along Damboa Road, Maiduguri. “The ordinance was rendered safe without damage to life and property,” the commissioner said. He said that the successes recorded were due to timely supply of information by the residents of the state. “This feat would not have been achieved without the provision of timely information to security agents by members of the public. “It is hoped that this success will further encourage residents to volunteer vital information to security agents in the state. “ I therefore urge the good people of Borno to always call on security agencies whenever items suspected to be Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are discovered in their domains. “This is the only way to avert further wanton destruction in the state,” Adoda said. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/police-recover-147-explosives-borno/ |

By Rotimi Akinwumi Snr. Correspondent, Abuja Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, accused President Goodluck Jonathan of desperately trying to cling to power at all cost, even when it is clear Nigerians want him out. Speaking at the party’s Abuja campaign office, Buhari, flanked by several APC chieftains, accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of masterminding the shift in election date by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He warned that there must be no further change in the new date, while expressing disappointment at the shift, assuring that the APC is prepared for the election and is sure to win. The shift, he enthused, will not in any way affect his party’s chances at the poll, describing reasons adduced for the shift in the negatives. Buhari also accused Jonathan of becoming a sit- tight leader ready to do anything to remain in office, insisting that the shift in the election was a pre-planned idea of the ruling PDP, which was achieved by the arm-twisting of INEC by the government. Buhari urged the APC faithful and all Nigerians to see opportunity in the situation and push PDP out of power through the ballot. “Our desire for change must surpass their desperation to hold on to power at all cost. “We are clearly dealing with people who feel they can get away with placing their personal interest over those of our nation and its citizens. “What is at stake is the very survival of our country. We must not allow this temporary delay to abort this great opportunity. “While I share the pains and frustrations of my fellow citizens over this development, my deep faith in the democratic process assures me that this country, with your support, will overcome. “We must remain resolute and rise above all provocations. We must continue to trust in the entire democratic process and in INEC, which has been brought under so much pressure in the last few days. “Our trust can only serve to encourage the electoral body to remain steadfast and remain committed to the rule of law. I wish to state strongly that our party will not tolerate any further interference with the electoral process. “The rescheduled elections of March 28th and April 11th, 2015 must be sacrosanct. “Nigeria is definitely greater than any of us, and much more important than our individual ambitions. Before us, there was Nigeria, and long after we are gone, there will still be Nigeria. “Let us continue to do our part to make it the great country that it should be. We must rescue our dear country. God being on our side, we shall salvage Nigeria together,” he said. He went further to deride reasons adduced for the postponement, saying it was a manifestation of the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, in the workings of INEC, who he said, was merely carrying out the assignment on behalf of the PDP. “This postponement, which comes on the heels of the bogey of the National Security Adviser that half of the registered voters were being disenfranchised, was exposed as a crude and fraudulent attempt to subvert the electoral process. “The PDP administration has now engineered a postponement using the threat that security will not be guaranteed across the length and breadth of Nigeria because of military engagement in some states in the North East. “It is important to note that although INEC acted within its constitutional powers, it is clear that it has been boxed into a situation where it has had to bow to pressure. Thus, the independence of INEC has been gravely compromised. “As a Nigerian and a presidential candidate in the elections, I share in the disappointment and frustration of this decision. “This postponement, coming a week to the first election, has raised so many questions, many of which shall be asked in the days ahead. “However, we must not allow ourselves to be tempted into taking actions that could further endanger the democratic process,” he said. He admitted the challenges of insurgency in the country, but blamed the ruling party for seeking to exploit the situation to its advantage, which, if not properly managed, can aggravate the situation on ground. Buhari urged the party to remain resolute and make positive use of the chances provided by the shift in the election to bond better. “Our country is going through a difficult time in the hands of terrorists. Any act of violence can only complicate the security challenges in the country and provide further justification to those who would want to exploit every situation to frustrate the democratic process in the face of certain defeat at the polls. “If anything, this postponement should strengthen our resolve and commitment to rescue our country from the current economic and social collapse from this desperate band.” http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/02/jonathan-sit-tight-ruler-buhari/ |
