PoliticsPolice Recovers 147 Bomb Explosives In Borno by msmon(op): 6:43pm On Feb 10, 2015
The Borno Police Command said on Tuesday that it had uncovered 147 Unexploded Cluster Ordinances (UXOS) in a village near Jakana in Konduga Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Clement Adoda, the Commissioner of Police, stated this at a news conference in Maiduguri.

Adoda said that the items were uncovered on Feb. 8 by a combined Bomb Disposal Unit of the command.

“I am glad to inform you that on Feb. 8 at about 9 a.m. ,147 unexploded UXOS were recovered at about two kilometers away from Auno village near Jakana in Konduga Local Government Area by a combined Bomb Disposal Unit of the command.

“Policemen with troops attached to Jakana General area led by Captain Daniel Yakubu carried out the operation.

“The explosives were sighted, recovered and destroyed in good time without injuries or damages to lives and property,” Adoda said.

He said the command had also recovered another unexploded ordinance at the residence of the state NYSC Director.

“The Bomb Disposal Unit also recovered an unexploded ordinance suspected to have been launched during the Feb. 1, Boko Haram foiled attack on Maiduguri, at the residence of the state NYSC Director along Damboa Road, Maiduguri.

“The ordinance was rendered safe without damage to life and property,” the commissioner said.

He said that the successes recorded were due to timely supply of information by the residents of the state.

“This feat would not have been achieved without the provision of timely information to security agents by members of the public.

“It is hoped that this success will further encourage residents to volunteer vital information to security agents in the state.

“ I therefore urge the good people of Borno to always call on security agencies whenever items suspected to be Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are discovered in their domains.

“This is the only way to avert further wanton destruction in the state,” Adoda said.

PoliticsMaku Denies Calling Jonathan A Boko Haram Sponsor by msmon(op): 6:19pm On Feb 10, 2015
Former Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. Labaran Maku, on Tuesday in Abuja said he never accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being a sponsor of violent sect, Boko Haram.

He also stated that more than 60 villages in Nasarawa State had been destroyed because of social and political unrest.

Speaking with journalists, Maku, who is also the Nasarawa State governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, said reports in the social media linking him with accusing the President of being a mastermind of Boko Haram insurgency, were the handiwork of Jonathan’s enemies, who want to pull the President down.

He said the unnamed enemies had decided to use him (Maku) due to his profile and closeness to the President.

According to him, despite himself and his campaign organisation refuting such claims for over two weeks, “the enemies of President Jonathan have continued to tell lies with a view to putting me and the President in bad light.”

Maku said, “There are desperate plans to slander the President by his opponents. About two weeks ago, I saw on the social media an image quoting me to have accused Jonathan of sponsoring Boko Haram. But my campaign organisation dismissed the report; yet they continued their mischievous fiction.

“We continued to deny it. But I was also quoted as saying that Jonathan was behind the attacks in my state. They were looking for someone who is close to the President for people to believe. The opponents of the President are doing this to pit me against him. I find this report very reprehensible, very unprofessional and mischievous.

“It is absolute desperation by enemies of the President to pull him down using my name. My position on violence in this country has been very consistent. Terror attacks have been a mix of religion and politics. Terrorism has become an international phenomenon.

“Some people are using terrorism to turn the public against Jonathan and discredit him. Terrorism follows the theory of guerrilla warfare. Because terrorists do not carry uniform, they operate everywhere,”

The ex-minister said he was campaigning for Jonathan because he considered the President’s election higher than his own and also because Jonathan was the adopted candidate of APGA.

Maku said, “I come from Nasarawa State where terrorism is also serious through attacks in villages. More than 60 villages in Nasarawa State have been destroyed because of social and political reasons. I want to make it clear that at no point in my life have I linked the President with terrorism. I worked for my conscience and I cannot betray a government I served for six years. I believe in Jonathan, who has made the economy strong in the midst of war.

“Opponents have the right to attack the President but we must approach this campaign with all sense of decency as there is a limit to propaganda. We should know that there is still God in all we do. This insinuation that because I am in APGA and have turned against him is not true. He is still my candidate, despite my being in APGA. I am leading his campaign.

“Those who are doing this should remove the name of Labaran Maku. We must not take the President for granted because one day, we will remember him.”

PoliticsJonathan A Sit-Tight Ruler – Buhari by msmon(op): 7:17am On Feb 10, 2015
By Rotimi Akinwumi
Snr. Correspondent, Abuja

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday,
accused President Goodluck Jonathan of
desperately trying to cling to power at all cost,
even when it is clear Nigerians want him out.

Speaking at the party’s Abuja campaign office,
Buhari, flanked by several APC chieftains,
accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of
masterminding the shift in election date by the
Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC).

He warned that there must be no further change
in the new date, while expressing disappointment
at the shift, assuring that the APC is prepared for
the election and is sure to win.

The shift, he enthused, will not in any way affect
his party’s chances at the poll, describing reasons
adduced for the shift in the negatives.

Buhari also accused Jonathan of becoming a sit-
tight leader ready to do anything to remain in
office, insisting that the shift in the election was a
pre-planned idea of the ruling PDP, which was
achieved by the arm-twisting of INEC by the
government.

Buhari urged the APC faithful and all Nigerians to
see opportunity in the situation and push PDP out
of power through the ballot.
“Our desire for change must surpass their
desperation to hold on to power at all cost.
“We are clearly dealing with people who feel they
can get away with placing their personal interest
over those of our nation and its citizens.
“What is at stake is the very survival of our
country. We must not allow this temporary delay
to abort this great opportunity.
“While I share the pains and frustrations of my
fellow citizens over this development, my deep
faith in the democratic process assures me that
this country, with your support, will overcome.
“We must remain resolute and rise above all
provocations. We must continue to trust in the
entire democratic process and in INEC, which has
been brought under so much pressure in the last
few days.
“Our trust can only serve to encourage the
electoral body to remain steadfast and remain
committed to the rule of law. I wish to state
strongly that our party will not tolerate any
further interference with the electoral process.
“The rescheduled elections of March 28th and
April 11th, 2015 must be sacrosanct.
“Nigeria is definitely greater than any of us, and
much more important than our individual
ambitions. Before us, there was Nigeria, and long
after we are gone, there will still be Nigeria.
“Let us continue to do our part to make it the
great country that it should be. We must rescue
our dear country. God being on our side, we shall
salvage Nigeria together,” he said.

He went further to deride reasons adduced for the
postponement, saying it was a manifestation of
the intervention of the National Security Adviser,
Sambo Dasuki, in the workings of INEC, who he
said, was merely carrying out the assignment on
behalf of the PDP.
“This postponement, which comes on the heels of
the bogey of the National Security Adviser that
half of the registered voters were being
disenfranchised, was exposed as a crude and
fraudulent attempt to subvert the electoral
process.
“The PDP administration has now engineered a
postponement using the threat that security will
not be guaranteed across the length and breadth
of Nigeria because of military engagement in
some states in the North East.
“It is important to note that although INEC acted
within its constitutional powers, it is clear that it
has been boxed into a situation where it has had
to bow to pressure. Thus, the independence of
INEC has been gravely compromised.
“As a Nigerian and a presidential candidate in the
elections, I share in the disappointment and
frustration of this decision.
“This postponement, coming a week to the first
election, has raised so many questions, many of
which shall be asked in the days ahead.
“However, we must not allow ourselves to be
tempted into taking actions that could further
endanger the democratic process,” he said.
He admitted the challenges of insurgency in the
country, but blamed the ruling party for seeking
to exploit the situation to its advantage, which, if
not properly managed, can aggravate the
situation on ground.

Buhari urged the party to remain resolute and
make positive use of the chances provided by the
shift in the election to bond better.
“Our country is going through a difficult time in
the hands of terrorists. Any act of violence can
only complicate the security challenges in the
country and provide further justification to those
who would want to exploit every situation to
frustrate the democratic process in the face of
certain defeat at the polls.
“If anything, this postponement should
strengthen our resolve and commitment to
rescue our country from the current economic
and social collapse from this desperate band.”

A Nigerian woman, Mrs. Deola Ogunfoworin, and her daughter, Ronke, are presently languishing at an Indian hospital after the family ran out of funds to treat the ailment for which Deola was flown abroad.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 53-year-old Deola, who was diagnosed of diabetes in 1994, and hypertension in 2009, had been flown to the Asian country on October 7, 2014, to undergo a kidney transplant.

In a medical report signed by one Dr. O.A. Kayode of the Kidney Clinics Nigeria Limited, Abeokuta, Ogun State, and obtained by our correspondent, Deola was referred to the Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, India, for renal transplantation on September 25, 2014.

Kayode wrote, “The above named patient is a known chronic kidney disease patient with background type 11 Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. The patient has, however, opted for renal transplantation at Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, India.

“She is medically fit to travel as no untoward complication is expected from her clinical condition.”

Our correspondent gathered that Deola was accompanied to India by 32-year-old Ronke.

It was learnt that when the woman started the treatment at the Indian hospital, an initial surgery done on her neck, gulped more than N3m, leaving the family helpless to carry on with the rest of the treatment.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the husband, Feyi Ogunfoworin, said, “When my wife was referred to India in Spetember last year, we rallied round for support and were able to raise more than N3m, hoping to spend it on the kidney transplant. Unfortunately when they arrived in the country, the hospital discovered a tumor, which needed to be operated, in her neck. The N3m went into the surgery.

“The actual transplant she went for has yet to be carried out. We have exhausted all our resources. Officials at the Indian hospital are hoping to ensure they start the transplant promptly, but we are at the end of the rope. Presently, Deola and Ronke are stranded in India as a result of our inability to pay the bills for my wife’s treatment.”

Our correspondent was told that Deola, as a result of ongoing treatment, could not speak on the telephone from the hospital bed.

In a report on Deola’s health by the Columbia Asia Hospital, signed by an official, Dr. Girish Namaghondlu, a consultant Nephrologist, the hospital confirmed that the woman was the hospital’s patient, adding that her treatment was being delayed due to “significant financial problems.”

He said, “She was presented to us from Nigeria seeking a transplant for end stage kidney disease on haemodialysis with background history of long standing diabetes and hypertension.

“Due to the above named problems, she has had prolonged stay at the hospital, and has been deemed unsuitable to receive a kidney transplant, and hence needs regular ongoing maintenance haemodialysis three times a week.

“I gather that there have been significant financial problems in continuing her treatment and her family is seeking financial aid in Nigeria. I strongly support this on humanitarian grounds.”
