PoliticsPDP Has Confidence In Jega, Says Mu’azu by msmon(op): 8:16pm On Feb 12, 2015
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic
Party and its governors have said they have
confidence in the Chairman of the Independent
National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

This position was stated at a press briefing
addressed by the National Chairman of the ruling
party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu in Abuja on Thursday.
At the briefing, which was held at the national
headquarters of the party, were some governors of
the party led by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, who is also the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio.

The position of the party and its governors was a
departure from the position of its campaign
directorate which had threatened to pass a vote of no confidence in Jega and his team.

The campaign team, through its Director of Media
and Publicity, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, had
complained about the distribution of the Permanent
Voter Cards, which it alleged was being skewed in
favour of the opposition, the All Progressives Congress.

Mu’azu however differed on this at the press briefing, saying that the postponement of the elections would enable the chairman of the commission and his team to distribute the remaining voter cards.

He said even President Goodluck Jonathan had
expressed confidence in the chairman of the
commission and that with that, there was no way the party would defer from the President’s position.

He said, “You asked if the party has confidence in
Jega? My answer is not far-fetched.
“The President stated during his media briefing last
night (Wednesday) that he has confidence in Jega.
“We also have confidence in Jega that he and his
team will conduct free, fair and transparent
elections.”

A man purported to be Lagos governor’s uncle,
Alhaji Kayode Fashola, has been accused of beating
up his wife.

In the viral message posted by one Rachel
Adenuaga on social media, the Alhaji in question
was labelled as irresponsible, chronic womaniser,
unrepentant drunk and a chain smoker.

Rachel Adenuga, who claims to be a close friend of
Alhaji Fashola’s second wife, posted the message
below on facebook and it has since gone viral.

“The man in this picture is Alhaji Kayode B Fashola
popularly known as Uncle K. He is an Uncle to the
present Governor of Lagos State Tunde Fashola. he
lives at 21, Akinhanmi Street Surulere.

I have decided to post this on facebook so that
people know the kind of person he is and for the
public to be careful.

The woman in picture is his legally married second
wife. Her offence is that he found a complimentary
card on her table.

And without asking questions, he locked the door
and almost beat her to death.

Again I must warn the public that this man is not
only a wife beater, he is a smoker, a drunk,
extremely jealous and a chronic womaniser.

He boasted that he is above the law in Lagos by
virtue of his position but we all know that no one is
above God.”

According to the dictionary;
cor·rup·tion - /kəˈrəpSH(ə)n/ noun

2. the process by which something, typically a word

steal - /stēl/

Mr. President, I believe u can now see that

CrimeTricyclist Falls Into Soakaway While Starting Generator by msmon(op): 4:54am On Feb 12, 2015
Tragedy struck in the Mushin area of Lagos State
after a 35-year-old tricycle rider, Olalekan Salisu, fell
into a soakaway in his house and died.
He was said to be starting his small generator on the
soakaway around 9pm on Sunday when the slab
covering the soakaway gave way.

The generator and the Ogun State indigene were said
to have fallen into the soakaway.

Residents said it took about five hours before the
victim, who was married with two kids, could be
brought out. He was brought out dead.

Tension was still high on Wednesday when PUNCH
Metro visited the scene of the incident, a two-storey
building on Anipele Street, Olorunshogo, Mushin.
Our correspondent observed that two fresh concrete
slabs had been prepared to replace the damaged one
which was at the back of the house.

Faeces, said to have been drained out of the
soakaway with pumping machines in frantic bid to
remove the victim, were still in the gutters in the
area.

Some of the deceased’s co-tenants, however, denied
living in the house or knowing about the incident.
They declined to talk to PUNCH Metro.

One particularly threatened to beat up our
correspondent. One of the tenants, who did not
identify himself, asked our correspondent to leave
immediately.

He said, “Look, everybody is sad. The man that died
here is young and his family has left the house for
their home town after the incident. The landlord does
not live here with us. If you want to get any
information, come back when his family returns or
when everybody is in a good mood.”

However, some residents of the area claimed that the
tenants were trying to cover up what had happened
in the house.

A resident, John Ademola, who said he was among
those that attempted to save the victim on the night
of the incident, explained that the tenants usually
put generators on the soakaway which must have
weakened the slab and caused the tragedy.

He said, “On that night, the man, who lived on the
second floor, came outside to turn on his generator
after a power outage.

“The generator, which was on the soakaway, started
working and as the man was about leaving, the
soakaway caved in and he and the generator fell
inside.

“As he was going down, he shouted for help and that
was what made people know that something bad had
happened.”

Our correspondent learnt that all attempts to remove
him proved abortive, until someone called men of the
Lagos State Fire Service.

The firemen were said to have inserted pipes into the
soakaway to drain the wastes after which the victim
was brought out dead.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak
Fadipe, while confirming the incident, said a fireman,
Joshua Akindele, descended into the soakaway to
evacuate the victim.

He said, “The fireman went in with a sealing hook
and a ladder. With the aid of the hook, he found the
location where the victim was buried in the faeces.
He then went into the basement of the septic tank
using the ladder.

“He used a side of the victim’s shoulder to bring him
up and tied a rescue rope over his body before
drawing him up.It was a difficult situation.”

Fadipe warned people in the state to avoid using
septic tank as a passageway or a facility for storage
of generators, which could weaken the slabs and lead
to avoidable disaster.

CrimeFour Women Arrested Over Stolen Baby Girl by msmon(op): 3:25pm On Feb 11, 2015
Four women are now cooling their heels at Ogidi Police station in Anambra State over a stolen two months-old baby girl.

The baby said to have been stolen from her mother at Nnewi was said to have been sold for N625, 000 by an Enugu based woman (names withheld).

The four women now in police custody included three sellers.

During an interview with Daily Independent, the buyer said that she resolved to procure the baby girl because she needed a female child that would look after her when she would be old.

“I have a male child but I want a female child that will look after me when I become old. The boy will not nurse me more than the girl”, she said.

When asked if the husband was aware of her plan to buy the baby, she spoke in the affirmative, saying “he was aware and asked me to carry on”.

Confirming the arrest of the buyer and sellers, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in charge of the Ogidi Police Station, Mr. Hassan Musa, said that the baby has also been recovered and that she is in police custody while effort is on to get the mother.

Musa said he was satisfied with the confessional statement of those arrested, adding that two of the women that sold the baby are based in Abatete and Onitsha.

He said “We had to move to Enugu to get the baby on arresting the buyer days after and now we are moving to Nnewi to know how the mother of the baby will feature”.

He reiterated the resolve of the Division to stop all illegal sale of babies in the area.

Musa disclosed that it was on a tip off that the police arrested the sellers while they were waiting for the buyer to come from Enugu, Enugu State.

CrimeAttendant Breaks Friend’s Spinal Cord Over Age Claims by msmon(op): 7:24am On Feb 11, 2015
A car wash attendant, Michael Taiwo, has allegedly
broken the spinal cord of his friend, Akeem Amoo,
after a scuffle between them.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 28-year-old Taiwo and Amoo were boyhood friends in the Alagbado area of Lagos State before a disagreement over age marred their relationship.

Our correspondent learnt that Amoo had been
admitted to an orthopaedic hospital in Lagos, while
Taiwo was charged to court by the police on Monday.

It was said the defendant, who claimed he was older, had accused the victim of being disrespectful to him whenever there was a discussion among their caucus in the community.

Our correspondent gathered that they kept each
other at arm’s length after several altercations on the issue.

On January 28, around 8pm, Amoo, a commercial
motorcyclist (popularly called okada rider), reportedly went to a car wash at Omisesan Junction– where Taiwo works – to wash his motorcycle.

Taiwo was said to have challenged Amoo to a duel
after accusing the latter of grazing his leg with the
tyre of his motorcycle.

In a show of strength, the suspect, it was learnt,
lifted Amoo up and smashed his back on the floor,
leading to what was later described by doctors as a
spinal cord injury.

Taiwo was later arrested and arraigned before an
Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in the Ijaiye-Ojokoro
area of the state on one count of assault.

The charge read, “That you, Michael Taiwo, on
January 28, 2015, at about 7.40pm, at Omisesan
Junction, Alagbado, in the Ikeja Magisterial District,
did cause a grievous harm on Akeem Amoo by hitting him on ground full of stones which broke his
backbone and left ankle and thereby committed an
offence contrary to and punishable under Section
243 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria,
2011.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the
offence.

He was granted bail by the presiding magistrate,
Mrs. T. Akani, in the sum of N100,000 with a surety,
who, according to her, must also present evidence of tax payment and means of livelihood to the court for verification.

The case was adjourned till March 23, 2015 for
mention.
