Crime / Woman Cuts Neighbour’s Throat During Argument (photo) by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:20am On Jul 13, 2015
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman, Helen Okeke, who allegedly killed her neighbour, identified only as Rose, in the Ikota, Ajah area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Okeke slit Rose’s throat after the duo reportedly had an argument over who poured urine on the latter’s clothes that were spread on the entrance door to her room.

The incident occurred at about 5pm last Wednesday in the Ikota Housing Estate, Ikota Second Gate area.

Our correspondent gathered that Rose, who was reportedly preparing for her wedding, had returned from work in the afternoon, and noticed a foul smell on the clothes spread on her door.

It was learnt that the deceased went to the landlady, Alhaja Iyabo Hamzat, to report the matter. The landlady was said to have pacified her, offering to give her the money to buy some detergent to wash the clothes.

It was gathered that after some minutes, other neighbours, however, heard Rose’s sudden cry for help in the corridor. The suspect was said to have been found holding the deceased by the neck, with a bloodstained kitchen knife in her hand.

Our correspondent gathered that Rose died before she could be rushed to a nearby hospital.

The matter was said to have been reported to the Ajah Police Division, Ajiwe, and Okeke was arrested.

When PUNCH Metro visited the apartment on Friday, Alhaja Hamzat said she had served a notice to Okeke, commonly known as Mama Chinedu, on several occasions to pack out of the house, adding that the suspect refused to leave.

She said, “At about 5pm that day, Rose came to my apartment. She said she came to report Iya Chinedu.

“She said when she returned from her workplace, she found her curtain, towel and other clothes drenched with urine. She said she suspected that it was Iya Chinedu who poured the substance on her clothes.

“I begged Rose and told her that I would give her money to buy detergent to wash the clothes. She had hardly returned to her room when we heard screams of ‘help help!’ We all rushed there and we saw Rose in a pool of blood with Iya Chinedu holding a bloodstained knife.

“With shock, we rushed Rose to a hospital, but she died on the way.

“Iya Chinedu moved into my house just last year. She moved in with her son. The son later left, saying she was fed up with her mother. I had served her quit notices on several occasions, but she refused to move out.

“I went to the police at Ikota to report her, but the policemen there said they would not meddle in landlord-tenants’ affairs.”

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that Okeke had been moody before that day.

Another resident in the area, identified only as Blessing, said after Okeke had stabbed her neighbour, some angry youths beat her up.

She said, “Mama Chinedu did not show any remorse at all. Some boys became angry and beat her up.

“Everyone was shocked, and wanted to find out what offence was committed that made Okeke to stab the young lady.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.

He added that the matter would be transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, for further investigation.

He said, “The police visited the scene and removed the corpse to a public morgue in Yaba.

“The suspect has also been arrested. She will be transferred to the SDCI after the police have concluded their preliminary investigations.”

Politics / LASTMA Official, Who Slumped On Traffic Duty, Dies (photo) by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:11am On Jul 13, 2015
An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, who slumped while controlling traffic on Ishaga Road in the Idi-Araba, Mushin area on Saturday, has died.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the official, Kazeem Lawal, was brought in dead to the Randle Hospital, Surulere, where his colleagues had rushed him.

Sunday PUNCH had reported that the official, who was among LASTMA officials on duty for an event at the Chapel of the Healing Cross, collapsed at about 1.30pm.

It was also reported that Lawal, who was gasping for breath, was rushed to a hospital after he did not respond to preliminary treatment.

Our correspondent gathered that Lawal, who was attached to LASTMA Zone 3, Iponri, died on the way to the hospital.

The matter was said to have been reported at the Alakara Police Division.

One of the colleagues of the deceased, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “He was initially taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, but he could not be attended to because of the ongoing strike action. He was then rushed to the Randle Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

“We do not have any insurance policy. We do not have any hazard allowance. It is very painful.

“His family members are in disarray at present. We work round the clock, and we are usually overwhelmed. He must have collapsed from accumulated stress.

“Since the government sacked some LASTMA workers last year, there has been a burden on the workforce. Work posts, where seven personnel were handling, have been reduced to one or two.”

Our correspondent gathered that LASTMA officials, policemen and National Union of Transport Workers besieged the hospital on Sunday.

“The whole thing happened so fast and so shocking. By the time they took him to the Randle Hospital, he had died,” another LASTMA official said.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said he would get back to our correspondent on the matter.

He said, “I am still awaiting details on the incident. I will call you back when I have them.”

The Public Relations Officer, LASTMA, Bola Ajao, could not be reached as calls put across to her phone did not connect. A text message sent to her also had yet to be replied to.

There was also a heavy presence of security personnel on the road.

The incident occurred at about 1:30pm.

His colleagues and bystanders had rushed to pull him off the road and made frantic efforts to resuscitate him. Some of the LASTMA officials were seen pounding his chest, while others poured water on him.

But when his colleagues realised that he was not responding to the first aid, they took him into their vehicle and drove off.

Politics / Money Laundering: Court Releases Nyako, Son, Others On Bail by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:32am On Jul 11, 2015
Twodays after they were remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over charges bothering on money laundering, former Governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) and his son, Abdulaziz, yesterday, secured bail from the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
Ruling on consolidated bail application that was moved by their lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, yesterday, trial Justice Evoh Chukwu ordered the accused persons to pay the sum of N350million each.
Admiral Murtala Nyako
They court further ordered them to produce two persons to stand as their sureties or in the alternative, provide one surety who must be a serving Director in any federal government establishment.
The surety according to the court must show a proof of ownership of landed property in Abuja, depose to an affidavit of means before the Deputy Chief Registrar of the High Court, as well as, show evidence of three years tax payment.
Besides, the accused persons were directed to surrender their international passport to the court alongside their two recent passport photographs.
Justice Chukwu subsequently fixed September 30, October 22 and 23 to commence their trial.
Specifically, Nyako and his son who is a serving Senator, were accused of diverting over N40billion from the Adamawa State treasury between January 2011 and December 2014.
The duo were on Wednesday docked before the high court on a 37-count criminal charge bothering on money laundering, abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds.
They are facing trial alongside their alleged accomplices- Zulkifikk Abba and Abubakar Aliyu.
Five companies that allegedly served as conduit pipes for the illegal diversion of the funds-Blue Opal Limited, Sebore Farms & Extension Limited, Pagoda Fortunes Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Crust Energy Limited, were equally charged as the 5th to 9th accused persons.
The accused persons had shortly after they pleaded not guilty to the charge, begged trial Justice Chukwu to release them on bail, a prayer that was declined, even as the court ordered their remand in EFCC custody.
Meantime, at the resumed sitting yesterday, the EFCC vehemently opposed Nyako’s application for bail. Arguing a 20-paragraphed counter affidavit that was sworn to by one Adekunle Christopher Odofin, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, relied on three exhibits (RG1- RG3), and insisted that the accused persons would jump bail if released.
The EFCC stressed that Nyako and his son went into hiding the last time it granted them administrative bail, saying they only returned to the country after May 29 when President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office.
“We submit that whether to admit the applicants to bail or not, is at the discretion of the court. In exercising that discretion, it is always guided by certain principles so that the exercise can be judicial and judicious. Some of those conditions are enumerated in section 162 of the Administration of Justice Act, 2015.
“Bail is not automatic and the accused persons have not placed sufficient materials before this court to warrant the exercise of discretion in their favour”, the EFCC lawyer contended.

Crime / Girl, 15, Commits Suicide After Being Gang- Raped In Abia (PHOTO) by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:25am On Jul 11, 2015

Rage, shock and confusion pervaded Okwoyi village, Isieke community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State as a 15-year-old girl committed suicide after being ganged-raped.
The deceased, Comfort Uche-Ume, a native of Amaeke Abam in Arochukwu LGA of the state, was allegedly raped by three boys; Ndubuisi Wogu, Chinaza Ufomadu, and Francis Onwoboro now on the run.
The deceased was a JSS 3 student of Isieke Community Secondary School and had just finished writing the “Junior WEAC” exam, according to a source.
The source also said two of the culprits hail from Okwoyi while the other is from Ikwuano LGA.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke said the police had declared the suspected rapists wanted.
Onyeke told Southern City News that the victim who until her death resided at Iyienyi village with her parents, had gone in the company of her sister who was married at Okwoyi, a neighbouring village, to see her (sister) husband.
He said that as evening approached, the deceased opted to return home to remove the clothes they spread outside to save them from getting wet from the threatening rain.
But another source said the deceased decided to return home because she was having the key to their house so that the parents who travelled would not be stranded upon their return.
The PPRO said that as the deceased was trekking back to Iyienyi village alone, she was allegedly accosted by Nwogu, who had been making unsuccessful advances at her.
He said Nwogu, assisted by two other accomplices, dragged the victim to a nearby bush where they gang-raped her, threatening to kill her if she raised any alarm.
Police said that when the sister of the deceased returned home, she met her crying and after enquiries, Comfort narrated her ordeal to her.
Irked by the sexual assault on her sister, she was said to have informed her husband, who quickly rushed to confront one of the suspects and engaged him in a free-for-all.
According to the police, the victim was later brought to Umuahia Central Police Station around 9pm by her parents to officially report the matter.
Onyeke said after lodging the complaint, the police first decided to take the victim to the police clinic for examination and medical attention.
He said after she was examined and the police wanted to take her statement, but the parents pleaded that they should be allowed to take her home, promising to return the next morning since it was getting late so that they could still get transport home.
The incident, according to him, took place Friday last week.
“But instead of returning as they promised, the parents never showed up. The mother of the deceased rather decided to scold her over the incident.
“The mother mismanaged the situation. She said to her ‘Have I not warned you not to go to Okwoyi village alone? Now three men have raped you and if you become pregnant, who will be the father of the baby?’
“On Tuesday morning, the mother of the victim allegedly went to her room again and started talking to her. She later invited her for the family’s morning devotion, but she declined,”
The state police spokesman pointed out that when the family began to hold their morning devotion about 20 minutes later, a shout was heard outside the house and the family members rushed out.
According to him, the initial thinking of family members was that the rapists had come to attack her again.
But that was not to be as they were shocked to their marrows to see the lifeless body of their daughter, who was reportedly seen leave her room with a head tie/ veil across her shoulders, dangling on a guava tree beside their house. She had committed suicide!
Police said the deceased might have decided to take her life out of frustration and possible stigmatisation.
The PPRO, therefore, advised parents and guardians to exercise caution when “they manage sensitive situations that might come their way, especially the ones affecting their children or wards.”
He said, “Parents should avoid stigmatising their children, but treat them with love anytime such unfortunate situation comes up.”
Onyeke also appealed to members of the public with any credible information about the whereabouts of the alleged rapists to volunteer same to the nearest police station for prompt action.
Meanwhile, a source at Okwoyi told our correspondent that the villagers had begun a manhunt for the suspects.
The source said hunters had been mobilised to comb every nook and cranny of the village for their possible arrest.
According to the source, the villagers are not taking the incident lightly, vowing to stop at nothing in bringing the culprits to bok.
“This is an abomination and we will make sure we fish them out of any hole they may have run into,” the source said.

The successful lawyers include: the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Muiz Banire; Dr. Oladapo Olanipekun, who is a son of a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chief Wole Olanipekun and Emeka Etiaba, a son of a former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Mrs. Virgy Etiaba.
Others conferred with the rank are Director, Legal Services of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Ibrahim Bawa; Edward Ashiekaa; Benson Nwankwo; Joseph Bamigboye; Patrick Okolo; Prof. Maxwell Gidado; Dr. Tahir Mamman; and Dr. Akinpelu Onigbinde.
They also include: Samuel Zibiri; Adeniyi Adegbonmire; Aderibigbe Adedeji; Emmanuel Aguma; Abimbola Akeredolu; Olumuyiwa Akinboro; Gordy Uche; Uchechukwu Obi; Kehinde Eleja and Prof. Paul Idornigie.
Gidado, Mamman and Idornigie were of the academic category while the rest of the 18 lawyers were conferred with the rank as advocates.
The only female among the 21 successful lawyers, Akeredolu, was one of the three females in a total of 124 applicants that applied for the rank when the application entry opened in January.
The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary to the LPPC, Ahmed Saleh, announced the name of the successful lawyers at a press conference on Friday.
He said the rank was conferred on the 21 lawyers at the 119th general meeting of the LPPC on Friday “as a mark of excellence to the underlisted members of the legal profession.”
The 21 lawyers were selected after an interview of the 50 shortlisted candidates held on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Keyamo was shortlisted for the final interview last year but did not make the final list. This made the second time he got so close to getting the rank after previous attempts that failed to earn him an opportunity for the final interview.
Also a former National Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olusola Oke, who is now an APC member, was also shortlisted for this year’s final interview but failed to make the final list.

Politics / Poor Budget: 2016 Census May Not Hold, Says NPC by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:58am On Jul 10, 2015
The National Population Commission has hinted that the conduct of the population census and head count for all Nigerians scheduled for 2016 would depend on the willingness of Nigerians and the Federal Government because of poor budgetary allocation.

The commission also called for a review of The National Policy on Population to accommodate current realities “in view of recent changes in the demographic profile of the country.”

NPC said, “The review is to assess the performance of the programmes outlined in the policy and also to respond to emerging national and international issues in population and development.
We are currently leading the review process”.

The Chairman of the NPC, Chief Eze DuruIheoma (SAN), expressed these views on Thursday in Abuja during a press briefing in commemoration of the 2015 World Population Day, with the theme, “Vulnerable population in emergencies.”

According to him, if indeed Nigerians want the conduct of 2016 national census, they must demand for it, just like they did during the recently concluded general elections.

The PUNCH recalls that a former chairman of NPC, Chief Festus Odumegwu, was removed in 2013 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, following comments credited to him that previous national censuses figures were inflated to favour the northern parts of the country.

He had said that over N200bn would be required to carry out the census exercise that would be universally acceptable to correct the mistakes of the past.

But DuruIheoma, who recently complained of poor budgetary allocation, said the fate of the conduct of 2016 census rests solely on Nigerians and the Federal Government that should provide the needed funds for the exercise.

He said, “I want to remind us that censuses are supposed to be held between five and 10 years after the previous one. Now, the previous census in Nigeria took place in 2006. A maximum of 10 years will take us to 2016. That is why we are sticking to the 2016 date. That is when the next census is due in this country.

“Population census is an exercise that involves Nigerians. Look at the way Nigerians reacted to the last (2015) election. They demanded that they wanted it; the next thing after the elections ought to be the national census.

We want it to be in the consciousness of Nigerians. The last one took place in 2006. Ten years after, we want to know how many we are.

“Our duty here in the NPC is to help Nigerians realise this goal. We are ready to heed the call of Nigerians. Whatever they want us to do, we will carry out their wish. If they want us to carry out the exercise, we will.”

The NPC boss while decrying the pitiable conditions of Internally-Displaced Persons, called on Nigerians and relevant agencies of government to protect the rights of victims of insurgency in the North-East.

Politics / ‘FG Has Moved Boko haram Prisoners Out Of South east’ by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:29am On Jul 10, 2015
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, on Thursday explained why the planned protest by traders against the relocation of some Boko Haram suspects to Anambra State did not hold in the state.

He told journalists during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Abakaliki that since the suspects had already been taken to Abuja, the protest was unnecessary.

He said, “The traders have the right to protest but there was no need for the protest because we (South-East governors) had enjoined the Federal Government not to relocate any Boko Haram prisoner to any prison in the South-East. Those suspects brought to Anambra State have been taken back to Abuja.

“The state decided against the protest for the reason that the governors of the region had intimated the Presidency on their opinion on the matter, and so no need for anyone to encourage people of the state to take to the streets.”

Umahi said that risking the lives of the people of the state on the streets was not the best.
It was gathered that the planned protest by the traders was expected to take place simultaneously across the five states of the South-East.

The traders in Abakaliki, according to sources, were expected to convene at the Abakpa main market at about 8am.

They were to march round the state capital before converging at the Government House gate where Umahi was also expected to address them.

It was observed that riot mobile policemen had taken over the market to prevent the traders from embarking on the protest and to avert possible breakdown of law and order in the state.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Chris Anyanwu, said that the command had to beef up security on major roads and locations of the state to avert any possible breakdown of law and order.

He said, “We got wind of plans by traders in Abakaliki markets to stage a peaceful protest over what they alleged as relocation of persons suspected to be Boko Haram members to some prisons in the South-East. We had to mobilise our men immediately to major roads and locations in the state to avert any breakdown of law and order.

“Part of our responsibility is to ensure the security of lives and properties of the citizenry. We envisaged that hoodlums may take advantage of the protest to disrupt the peace of the state especially now that the election petition tribunal is sitting in the state capital. We don’t want people to loot peoples’ properties in the name of peaceful protest, so we had to mobilise our men.”

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mr. John Lebo, on Thursday said the state would resist any attempt to send Boko Haram suspects to prison facilities in the state.

Lebo said this in Calabar during his maiden press briefing with journalists.

The Speaker, who was reacting to a question on the recent public outcry over the relocation of Boko Haram suspects to a prison facility in Anambra State, said the Federal Government should not contemplate sending Boko Haram suspects to any prison facility in Cross River State.

He said emphatically that the state could not accommodate the suspects.

There are no fewer than six prisons sited in different locations including Calabar, Adim, Obubra, Ogoja and Obudu.

Lebo said, “We will resist relocation of Boko Haram suspects to Calabar Prisons or any other one in the state.”

He reiterated the assembly’s commitment towards making good laws that would impact positively on the lives of the citizens.

Lebo, who represents Abi state constituency in the House, also underscored the need for a robust relationship between the legislature and the executive, this he said, would help in deepening democracy in the country.

Crime / Cocaine Capsules Burst In Smuggler’s Stomach (PHOTO) by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:14am On Jul 09, 2015

A 32-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Obiefuna Ndulue, has died after some capsules used to pack substance that tested positive for cocaine burst in his stomach.

The deceased was said to have slumped at the departure hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and was rushed to a hospital within the facility.

It was learnt that Ndulue, who hailed from Anambra State, had wanted to travel via the Ethiopian airline to China.

PUNCH Metrogathered that 55 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.2 kilogrammes were evacuated from the suspect’s stomach after he was stabilised at the hospital.

The Lagos-based trader was said to have confessed to an operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency that he had wanted to smuggle the drug. He reportedly died while receiving treatment.

Our correspondent learnt that the agency also arrested a 46-year-old businessman, Bamidele Ibiteye, for allegedly laundering $2,198,900 (about N440m).

It was learnt that the money was impounded from Ibiteye at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, as he wanted to board a flight en route to Abuja.

Ibiteye, who runs a company, ND&C Global Investment Limited, told investigators that the money belonged to a medical practitioner in the state, identified as Thomas Martins.

The suspect, however, declined to reveal the identity of the person who was to receive the money.
The NDLEA Commander at the NAIA, Mr. Hamisu Lawan, confirmed Ndulue’s death.

He said, “The deceased collapsed at the departure hall. He collapsed after he notified the airline officials of his intention to cancel his trip. About 55 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine with a total weight of 1.20kg was evacuated from his stomach.

“The suspect confessed to cocaine ingestion. He later died while receiving treatment.”

The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed Ibiteye’s arrest, adding that the money had been recovered.
He said, “The $2,198,900 was seized from Ibiteye by anti-narcotic officials on the grounds of suspected money laundering at the local wing of the MMA2, Lagos. The suspect was apprehended on his way to Abuja and he is being investigated in connection with the case.”

It was gathered that the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, had directed that the suspect and the exhibit be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation.

Politics / Re: APC Crisis: How NEC Made Oyegun, Saraki, Dogara Winners by MuguliciousMUGU: 4:18am On Jul 05, 2015
“I expect that the party will work as unified entity especially as we promised the nation change. We had a very interesting discussion during the meeting and we affirmed the superiority of the party. We also have confidence in the way the president is giving leadership to the country. And so we all pledged to be Layla and dedicated to the party and the administration.

“I think we are leaving this place much, much stronger than we entered. But the good thing about democracy is that it allows even the fool to be foolish and the intelligent also to be intelligent. In the process of discussion, we intended to appeal to people to buy into our beliefs and our actions for us to be strong. And I am happy that those that are expecting chairs will be thrown, people coming out wearing long faces. But the party came out to say after we are APC”.

Tinubu, Akande absent at NEC meeting
Curiously absent at the meeting were Tinubu and Akande. Both had been dissatisfied with the turn of events in the National Assembly and the APC. While Tinubu was said to have been using the party leaders against Saraki and Dagara as National Assembly leaders, Akande exploded in a letter, warning against a North’s conspiracy against the Youraba of the South-West. But at the APC NEC meeting where the issue could have been discussed both men stayed away. Consequently, the NEC decided to step down their case, a development many felt had given Saraki, Dogara and Oyegun an edge in the crisis.

Lai Mohammed defended their absence. “If you look at our Constitution, neither of them is a member of the EXCO of the party. I think it is at the discretion of the NWC or NEC whom to invite or not and I also saw that quota as act of respect for his position. I don’t want to fathom more reasons why they are not here, but like I said neither of them is a member of the EXCO of the party”, he said.

Peace meeting
Having received the blessing of the NEC to mediate between Saraki/ Lawan’s groups and Dogara/Gbajabimaila’s groups, APC governors took the peace meeting to Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro where they met with the aggrieved groups. But like the NEC meeting, the Asokoro meeting ended in deadlock. Again, beaming with broad smiles, Okorocha and Oshiomhole, who have apparently become the mouthpiece of the Progressives Governors Forum, briefed journalists.

“You will not see any more disagreements as against the past. Peace has come to our party. Both the Senate President and the Speaker; Senator Ahmed Lawan and Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila will work together for the unity and progress of our party. By next week, we will give you people the details of the outcome of this peace meeting, but so far so good all things being equal,”Okorocha said.

Oshiomhole echoed similar sentiment “When you have some little disagreement among friends, the only way to solve them is to talk and we have started the process. The fact that the two sides are present, the foundation for peace is there.

“If people refuse to see eye to eye or refuse to sit together, then you can’t even discuss and the fact that they all turned up and we listened to all the sides and we have a couple of suggestions, we have agreed to continue with the conversation and we are meeting again tomorrow (Saturday) night here again. So, I believe we are making some progress. Not that everything is signed, sealed and delivered that is why Okorocha said we are continuing the process.”

Bottom line
In the reckoning of many ordinary Nigerians, the brouhaha in the APC does not concern them. What they earnestly yearn for is change. Clogging the wheel of developmental progress in the overall good of the country might spell doom for the government of Buhari. Just as Oyegun and the governors have promised, Nigerians expect the crisis in the National Assembly to be resolved before its resumption date of July 21.

Meanwhile, in the preclude to the closed-door session, the President had asked everyone to pocket his selfish ambition and allow the party and, by extension, his government to work.

‘Winning the battle, losing the war’
He said: “The elections have come and gone. The APC has won the battle, but lost the war. This is the paradox of democracy and we shall see how we can manage it going forward.

“I have already addressed you through the Chairman, through the leadership of the party, through your excellencies, the governors, and through our senators and House of Representatives members.

“The APC must not disappoint its constituency, that is the nation-state. We have to convince our various constituencies that we are individually worthy of the sacrifices that they have made.
“Let us as members of the APC no matter our personal differences get together and use the mandate given to us by this country. This is my personal appeal to you in the name of God. Whatever your personal interest or ambition, please keep it close to your heart and in your pocket. Let APC work.

“Let the system work and let us have a government that will earn the respect of our constituencies. My problem is the constituencies. I thank you very much for listening to me, and I thank the leadership across the board, and I appeal to you to please continue to work together.

“Please accept the superiority of the party. I cannot confine myself to the cage or Sambisa forest and refuse to participate in NEC or BoT. So, I respect, the superiority of the party. But God in his infinite mercy has helped by giving us acceptance. Let us not throw this success to the wind”.

APC will overcome challenges – Oyegun
In his welcome speech at the meeting, the National Chairman expressed the hope that the challenges in the party would be resolved before the resumption of National Assembly on July 21.

“We know the issues the challenges the party is passing through. In the process, we will discuss the challenges. I can assure you that they will be dealt with conclusively before the National Assembly reassembles”, Oyegun said.

APC governors to meet Saraki, Dogara
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that NEC resolved that Pregressives Governors Forum, a body of APC governors, would meet with Saraki and Dograra later as part of the moves to settle the conflict.

He stated that both the NEC and the governors unanimously expressed satisfaction with the Oyegun-led party executive by passing a vote of confidence on him.

He said: “The National Legal Adviser came to seek the approval of NEC as to the certain candidates of NEC who should be members of BoT and a motion was moved and carried after which NEC and the governors passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of the party.

“NEC has provided an enabling environment to look into ways of resolving the national assembly lock jams. Later in the day, the governors will be meeting with the Speaker and the Senate President in a further attempt to find a lasting solution to the lingering logjam at the National Assembly.

“Also, it is important to let you know that everybody in the party is united on two issues which are party supremacy and the need to ensure that this government deliver its campaign promises.”

APC will not break up—Okorocha
Also with journalists at the end of the meeting, Okorocha, who is the Chairman of the governors group, stated that the problems in the party would be resolved amicably.

He said: “Many people think that there will be problems between APC members at this meeting. But I am assuring Nigerians that we have met and discussed what affects all of us and we have understood ourselves. We have also reiterated our support and loyalty to our leadership. We are also going to meet on the issue of the National Assembly crisis and it will be resolved amicably. So, I can confidently say that the crisis facing the party is almost over now.”

APC will come out of problem stronger—Oshiomhole
Similarly, the Edo governor, Oshiomhole said that APC would come out of its present challenges stronger and better.
Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and President Muhammadu Buhari at the APC NEC Meeting.

“In human societies, you are bound to get divergent views. We can’t be perfect because we are human. The only thing is to recognize our limit and work together. The fact that the president left his office to attend the NEC meeting shows that he believes in the supremacy of the party because all of us, the president inclusive went for the election on the platform of the party,”he stated.
Politics / APC Crisis: How NEC Made Oyegun, Saraki, Dogara Winners by MuguliciousMUGU: 4:15am On Jul 05, 2015
Like a prosecution counsel whose absence stalled the hearing of his case in a law court, the failure of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the former interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande’s, to attend the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, on Friday, stopped the hearing of “their case” against the leadership of the party and the National Assembly respectively.

This is the inside story of how the APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, was let off the sack hook.
Apart from President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired military general who is obviously not known with generous, frivoulous, broad smiles, every other person wore smiles on their way out of the meeting.

From the ruling party National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and Speaker Yakubu Dogara, the smiles beamed. The governors were not left out. Trust Governors Adams Oshiomole and Rochas Okorocha who spoke to journalists. Their smiles were expectedly infections. But these were wry, seemingly subdued smiles that flashed just across faces.

Sure, one would think that those smiles were from the heart. But beyond the facade was deep seated pain arising from the stalemate of the core issue that brought them together. In any case, many thought it was a conscious calculation to hoodwink the media and the world knowing what the expectations of the members of the public were of them from the meeting.

Vote of confidence on Oyegun
But Oyegun’s happy mood was real. No doubts. He had hitherto been on tenterhooks. Two reasons were chiefly responsible. One: He was let off the sack hook and unexpectedly given a vote of confidence by the gathering. Two: His perceived critics were not available to frontally press their charges against him.

Indeed, to any keen follower of the ugly developments in the All Progressives Congress, APC, since June 9 when the 8th National Assembly was inaugurated, expectations were high that the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of the party, held on Friday at its national secretariat in Abuja, would have resolved the logjam. But that was not to happen.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara;Senate President, APC Chirman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun Dr. Bukola Saraki and President Muhammadu Buhari at the APC NEC Meeting.

What is the logjam? The Senate President, Saraki, and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Dogara, were elected into office in defiance of the directive of the party which had, in a straw poll, on June 6, produced Senate Ahmed Lawan and Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila as official candidates for the portfolios. Since then, all things fell apart for the party. That was round one of the problems.
Round two: While every effort was made to placate the powers-that-be in the APC, who obviouslygodfatheredand evenmidwivedthe candidatures of Lawan and Gbajabiamila, another tsunami hit the party. What happened? The party’s hierarchy, in what was believed to be a coerced move, sent in a list of candidates to be made Senate Leader, Deputy Senate Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip, ditto for the House of Representatives. But their list was rejected by the senators who eventually picked their choices for the positions.

Meanwhile, the letter containing the names for the Reps principal offices was not read by the Speaker, a development that culminated in a free- for -all on June 25 on the floor of the House. And then the party boiled further.
The crisis escalated when it sprawled menacingly to the national secretariat of the party, threatening Oyegun as the National Chairman as some quarters accused him of taking gratification.

But the man has since dismissed the allegation saying it is neither here not there.
And determined to broker peace among the APC warring parties, the Chairman summoned a meeting of the NEC for Friday.
Buhari, Saraki, Dogara, senators, Reps, governors elected on the platform of the party and every other person who had the licence to attend graced the event. But the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the former interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, upon whom most things in the party revolved around were conspicuously absent.

Rhetorics
One would have thought that the core issue, being the crisis in the party, would be exhaustively discussed and laid to rest, but you can’t bet it was scarcely mentioned in the course of proceedings. What rather transpired in the meeting were words of admonition, warnings, cautions and, in the end, there was a basket full of resounding rhetorics. Yet the crisis raged on.

Otherwise, why would a NEC that had the powers to take decisive and definite decisions pass on the responsibility of brokering peace between the aggrieved parties onto the governors to mediate?
Politics / Military Take Over Security In Anambra Prison by MuguliciousMUGU: 4:09am On Jul 05, 2015
Following the relocation of Boko Haram detainees to the Ekwulobia Prisons in Anambra State, the military have taken over the security of the facility.
SUNDAY PUNCHinvestigations showed that security operations in the Federal Government facility are no longer the exclusive preserve of the officials of the Nigeria Prison Service.
The development, sources told our correspondent, is not unconnected with the calibre of the detainees being held behind the walls of the facility.
A visit by our correspondent to the prison on Saturday showed that armed military personnel were located in strategic locations around the prison.
The development has also brought some form of hardship to residents of the host communities of the prison.
Free human and vehicular movement is no longer allowed around the place. Our correspondent sighted soldiers compelling passers-by to raise up their arms and get frisked before they were allowed passage. Vehicles were also searched.
Residents of Anambra had last week taken to the streets protesting against the relocation of the detainees. But the Federal Government had reacted saying it was a mere rumour.
But happenings around the facility on Friday further learnt credence to the report that the Boko Haram detainees had been relocated to the quiet Anambra town.
“It is like a war situation. We no longer move freely; we don’t even talk freely because you don’t know who is who now. Armoured vehicles are everywhere” Stanley Ezechukwu, a primary school teacher in the area told our correspondent.
One of the soldiers who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We are here to ensure that the prison is not attacked by the people who have demonstrated their resentment over the transfer of the detainees.”
Professor Chuwuemeka Ike, the traditional Ruler of Ndikerionwu, a neighboring community to Ekwulobia , condemned the transfer of the detainees to the area.
He acknowledged, however that prisons transfers are normal, but maintained that with the sensitive nature of the prisoners, the transfer of the Boko Haram detainee could have been avoided.
A press statement on Saturday by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Media, Mr James Eze, was not specific on whether the detainees had been relocated or not.
The statement titled; “The Transfer of Boko Haram Detainees to Ekwulobia Prisons: the true position,” maintained that the governor had not made any official press statement on the issue as reported in some national dailies.
The statement read in parts, “We wish to inform the general public that Governor Obiano never made any comments to these publications. Since the eruption of this controversy, Governor Obiano’s position has been consistent. This was fully reflected in the two press Statements issued on Sunday, June 28, 2015 and Wednesday July 1, 2015. In both statements, his message was simple – he re-assured Ndi Anambra that he was on top of the situation and that he was speaking with the relevant authorities to achieve a peaceful resolution of the issue. Governor Obiano’s commitment to this extremely sensitive issue remains the same.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Uche Eze in his reaction said the police would not want to comment on the matter as “it is purely an affair of the Nigerian Prisons Service.”
The member representing the area in the House of Representatives, Mrs. Eucharia Azodo however urged the Federal Government to rescind the decision in view of its security implications on the people of her constituency.
In a statement in Awka on Saturday, Azodo said the Boko Haram detainees would be better taken care of in a maximum security prison, arguing that Ekwulobia Prison did not have the capacity to accommodate such high risk prisoners.
She said, “The rising tension following rumours that Boko Haram suspects were relocated from some Northern prisons to the South-East, precisely, Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government of Anambra State, gives me great concern.
“We all are aware of the fact that Ekwulobia Prison in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State is not a maximum security prison.
“Whereas a large number of prisoners, about 134 inmates, are there already in a prison built to accommodate 85 inmates, a total number of 47 Boko Haram prisoners were brought to Ekwulobia Prison in the dead of the night of Sunday, June 28, 2015 amidst tight security.”
The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio- cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has flayed the Federal Government over the relocation.
The National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro who spoke with our correspondent in Umuahia, described the action as “ exportation of terrorism to the peaceful South-East region.”

Politics / Court Remands 63-year-old Man For Infecting Step- Daughter With HIV by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:37am On Jul 04, 2015
A state High Court sitting in Isabo Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday ordered a 63-year-old man, Alabi Ibrahim, to be remanded in prison for allegedly infecting his 13-year-old step-daughter with Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
The court was presided over by Justice A. Akinremi.
The accused person who had earlier been arraigned for allegedly defiling the said minor, was re-arraigned for infecting the victim with the virus.
The shocking discovery was contained in a medical examination report tendered before the court.
The Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. O. Osunfisan who stood for the plaintiff in the case instituted by Child Protection Network, a Non-Governmental Organisation, told the court that the accused, by the medical report, infected the victim with the virus.
During cross examination in the case tagged AB/37C/14, the accused admitted being HIV positive, but vehemently denied having carnal knowledge of the step-daughter, let alone infecting her with the deadly virus.
He told the court that the victim had earlier been sexually abused by a relative of his wife, adding that he resolved to send the girl packing when he observed that she was wayward and loose.
The DPP, while presenting the medical reports conducted on November 2012 as exhibits 2 and 3, emphasised that the accused infected the victim after defiling her.
She added that the accused also got a separate a room for the girl in the home to pave way for regular sex with her.
The plaintiff also maintained that the accused had always had sex with her under the guise of helping her with her home work.
A witness in the case, Sakirat Mosaku, told the court that Alabi’s wife had raised the alarm about the relationship between her daughter and husband.
Meanwhile, Justice Akinremi in his ruling, adjourned further hearing till July 7, 2015.

Politics / Chad Intercepts Nigeria-bound Boko Haram Weapons by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:12am On Jul 04, 2015
Authorities in Chad, Nigeria’s close neighbours, on Friday announced that it had seized a large cache of ammunition meant to be smuggled into the country by Boko Haram fighters.
The weapons, which include guns and rockets, were found in a house occupied by the insurgents during a raid by security operatives in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad.
According to the authorities, the weapons were buried in the courtyard of the house.
Security sources revealed that the seized weapons were part of a larger bulk that was to be smuggled into Nigeria by Baana Fanaye, a strategist for the terrorist organisation for Northern Cameroon and Chad, who was recently arrested by security operatives. According to a state prosecutor, Alghassim Khamis, around 60 suspected militants were arrested on June 27 when their hideout was raided by a combined team of operatives.
He said five officers and six militants were killed during the operation.
Despite a regional coalition led by Nigeria to strangle Boko Haram and its campaign of terror, the group has continued to kill and ravage communities in the Northern part of the country and nearby nations like Cameroon, Niger and Chad

Politics / We May Negotiate With Boko Haram, Says Presidency by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:06am On Jul 04, 2015
The Federal Government has said that it is open to negotiations with the Boko Haram sect in order to find a lasting solution to the security crisis in the country, if the group is willing.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Friday, in an interview with theBBC.
In the interview, which was monitored by our correspondent, Adesina said the Federal Government was not ruling out negotiations with the sect if it would put an end to the activities of the group. He lamented that the insurgents had attacked so many villages and killed scores of people.
“These were very vicious attacks. People were killed in scores and it’s so sad,” he said.
The President had during his inauguration speech said he had launched a strategy to deal with the sect by relocating the military headquarters to Maiduguri, Borno State.
When asked whether this would work, Adesina replied, “This is going to work. There are machineries being put in place. It’s going to work. The recent killings by the sect were meant to break our resolve, to weaken it, but that will stop. It remains a priority to him (Buhari) to deal with the group.
“You will notice that his first two weeks of administration were dedicated to tackling the insurgency. He visited Chad and Niger Republics and the following week, the Presidents of those countries also visited him in Abuja.
“The President of Benin Republic and the Defence Minister of Cameroon visited him; machinery is being put in place and once we’re through, we will see the end of the group. The target time for the deployment of the multinational force is July ending; that is in a couple of weeks.”
When the BBC also asked if the Federal Government was considering negotiations with the insurgent group, Adesina replied in the affirmative.
He said, “If they are willing, why not? You know attempts have been made for negotiations in the past and they didn’t work. Every reasonable person would want to see the end to this insurgency. So if they are willing, why not? You can’t rule that out.”
