Hello nairaland fam,
Please I’m really worried about something and I would love to share it on here
I have a low gpa of 2.57 on a scale of 5.00 in my undergraduate mechanical engineering
So I would love to know if there are schools anyone can recommend to me that would accept me for masters degree
I’m just worried because I’ve got admission refusal from MARSHALL and UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN and since then I’ve been down because they’re the school my hopes are on because of the high acceptances rate

I don’t know if anyone can advise me and also recommend school that accept low gpa of 2.57/5.00

Evaluate you transcript with WES, ace 290+ in GRE, you will get admission.

Add southern Arkansas University to your bucket list

Yeah, very terrible.

Trust me, when I say I have NEVER been outta helping others, never! Never left anyone Mention or PM ‘unread’ all my ‘NL life’.
People that know me off here, can testify. Been here since 2011 or so, and I can say this is even the media that I personally have a low ‘range’ of ‘helping’ others with my honest opinions.

Because I know what it feels like to have no or little idea or know-how about a thing or process, esp the japa path.

The little honest opinions, that we've been sharing here, we kuku know and heard agents and the upcoming ones, have been using it as their own personal contents for a fee/charge off here, we overlooking and keep sharing, just to carry our people (those that can’t afford agent charges and co) along.

We know, people charge guys here ‘ridiculously’ for Sevis fee and co, we no talk; because “na where man dey work; him dey chop”.

Na ‘we’ wey dey give our 2cents, of either you ‘concur’
or easily ignore it If you think it won’t help you, for no fee in our very very busy time and schedules, person

Sincerely, we can’t even help everyone; make agents chop too (afterall, na legit work. they should just help to do it right for the novices). Lol

Dear Muleriders Sir,

I read your story about your transition from Chemistry to MBA Business Analytics. I have gone through almost and all your posts and decided to reach out to you sir.

I also intend to get an MBA at a US school. I have also worked at a bank for two years (I still work there).

I graduated in 2018, studied Microbiology and just like you I never practiced. I had a GPA of 4.02/5.0. I evaluated with the free WES calculator as suggested by one of your posts ; it resulted to 3.48/4

I have no prior tech skills, but I have started learning data analytics. I intend to learn this for at least a year , then take GRE next year.

Please sir, can you advice/mentor me on how I can achieve this , what I need to look out for, what I should focus on , how to get the funding (cause I’ll be self-sponsoring and I’ll need to aggressively save up in advance)

If you don’t mind I can send a DM and discuss privately

Looking forward to hearing from you sir, your reply even if it’s a few lines will go a long way.

Thank you sir

The school is asking for a bank reference letter showing proof of funds. I was wondering if anybody here paid tuition before I -20 was released.

To my knowledge about little Rock, you don't pay tuition before I-20. Just tell your family to get the reference from the loan issuing bank

If you have a student copy of your transcript.
Go to WES website, use the free calculator to evaluate it to 4.0. Quote me on the outcome.

You have a good GRE score. So we should target schools that use "GPA + GRE score" to decide admission. You should get a conditional admission with this combo.

Looking forward to your replies

Good morning,

I would like to ask a quick question. I got admitted for my masters program with a tuition waiver and a research assistantship position (Fully funded program). However, I am not in Nigeria presently and would be applying from where I am in Europe.

I would be getting married soon and my spouse would want to apply for F2.

The question is she’s in Nigeria, I will not be applying from Nigeria so am confused how she’ll go about it because I want her to apply with me. Is there a way you can suggest I should go about it? I will appreciate your suggestions.

Thank you.

You aren't even married yet, and you already have an admission. Are you going to get married before resumption?.

Going for interview with your newly married wife within such short duration is kind of risky. It will look like you guys married just to be together in the US, my own opinion though. Wait and hear from others

Please I noticed that most applicants here use universities instead of college. I have BSC from Nigeria and got I20 for Associate degree at portland community college.

Is using a college a red flag ?
Does the VO check academic progression ?.

Should I continue with the sevis payment and visa application ?

V.O : I can see on your profile that you have a degree, why are you going for an associate degree in the US?'

You: ehm..........

V.O: I'm sorry, you do not qualify for a visa at this time ***passes green paper slip****

Yes. Academic progression matters. Going to college is like graduating from university and going back to poly for ND. You get it?

Hence: it's a clear red flag for your case.

Apply for masters instead

Great job bro! Your contributions here are the best. Can you believe I read all your posts? I once asked about MBA programs in affordable schools for a younger cousin of mine and you mentioned SAU.

I would like an honest opinion from you. Firstly, will 6M be just enough to cover for both tuition and living expenses (including medical insurance)for the first year?

6m is about 12k usd. For a school like SAU, it should be sufficient if he registers 6 credits per semester. Graduate course cost about $440/credit

Secondly, are tuition fees paid per semester or yearly? Someone mentioned that the school compels students to pay complete tuition for the first year.
Tuition can be paid at once, or as monthly installments using nelnet loans.

Thirdly, the juicy part. Are on-campus jobs very competitive? What’s the percentage chance that he will get a job within 3 months of resumption?

For a school like SAU, on campus jobs are on first come, first serve and students with no scholarship / funding have higher priority. The jobs are mostly available during fall. From resumption, he should avail himself at international student office for vacancies

Fourthly, speaking from experience, would you advise him to take a chance and travel to the US with his limited funds?
I have seen Alot of folks dropping out after first semester, many end up with poor grade due to struggles to pay bills. I have seen many who ended up out of status. Bottom line, it's difficult to survive in the US as a student with limited funds, no scholarship and no backup plan. My backup plan was freelancing which was paying me already before leaving naija.

Lastly, is it cheaper to have on-campus accommodation? Between on and off-campus boarding, which would u recommend? Does accommodation comes with furniture?
On campus is better because you are closer to the school which saves you cost of transportation or buying car, but it is expensive compared to off campus. And during holidays, you expected to vacate campus accommodation or pay extra to stay while on off campus, na your house. Nobody fit pursue you.

As for the furniture. Most accommodation comes with furnitures, some don't. On campus has furnitures. Just come with your bags and cloths

Looking forward to your response.

Apologies for the late response, just settling in a new job, that's why I have been away for a while.

Pls i need guidance on my immigration journey to usa. I want to confirm, in order to avoid the chances of being denied, should i pursue masters in Administrative assistant or in the education or in chemistry. Just to avoid being denied. I work as an admin assistant and i graduated with 2:2 at unilag. I studied chemistry education. I would have prefer chemistry because of funding, but if i switch to chemistry have graduated since 2016 and working as an admin assistant since 2017 till date, pls do you think it will be questioned and in the process be denied visa. Should i go for msc chemistry or look for something related to my job? Pls guys help me

In terms of funding and Stem OPT, choose chemistry.
In terms of career transition and less "shalaye" during interview, choose MBA.

I won't really suggest education because they are less funded compared to stems. And your chances of fitting into US teaching system is low as a black African immigrant compared to USC. Also, it's hard for schools to file H1b visa for international students of education because they have teachers yapa in the US. and if your plan is to return back to naija, I don't think any secondary school will pay you more than 150k monthly salary which isn't a good ROI on your education.

Bottom line, it's up to you to decide what you want and the career path to choose

My Visa interview transcript.
NOVEMBER 8th, 2021.
counter 9.

Exchange of Greetings

Consular; Have you had previous travels?
Me; No, I haven't had reasons to.

CONSULAR; Whats your current education...
Me;I  was saying  Civil Engineering while he intruded asked if Bsc and said yes.(I should have corrected him, as it a B.Eng.)
He immediately asked the a next question.

Consular; I see you're going for an MBA, Why this choice?
Me: Yes, I will actually be concentrating on Project management which is my major in my career, it very special to me because the cause integrates business analytics, Finance and accounting management in its course curriculum which I find very important to.my career prospect.
I also have a tuition scholarship of about 55% which makes the balance very affordable for me and my family.

Consular: How do you intend to fund your study, I can see here you have a scholarship but it dosent cover all.
Me; The remaining cost will be funded my brother who is into car dealership, he is been active in this business for over 20yrs with an annual profit turnover of over a 100million naira.
His reasons for funding my studies is because he believes in my career prospect and and also my ability to give back with the skills I have acquired during my studies to his business and the community at large and lastly he is also very financially capable to take up the cost. thanks

Consular; What's your intentions after your studies.
Me; I plan to work as a project manager and I also have a startup plan for a project management company that will be into consultancy services and training of young professionals in the industry back here in Nigeria knowing that with the skills and training I must have acquired during my studies, I will be able to deliver on this. thanks

Consular; keeps on typing and then gave me a  blue, reasons based on section 214b.

This part ask why the switch?.

In my own understanding and from my first interview experience as a switch from chemistry to MBA, You should have sold yourself how you are presently into handling projects at your work and you need the management skills part to excel.

For instance. " Currently at my place of work, I handle series of project as a civil engineer but I haven't been able to plan them effectively which causes backlogs and sometimes setbacks. Going for MBA and majoring in project management will help me to.................."

Good day Bosses in the house please I need your guidance

My sister contacted me that her friend got admission with a uni in Tx and needs statement of acc that have more than 20m so I ask her what about the family ties with the person and she said the friend told her she’s gonna state it that I’m her step brother (same mother ,different father ).

So I’m here to ask if that’s possible and if it won’t lead to visa denial on her own part

Secondly me self go japaa once I’m through with my undergraduate studies and hope it won’t affect me

Kindly assist me Bosses undecided

20million naira is about $36k. For your sister to be looking for such statement amount, it means her cost of attendance for the first year is about $36k which is on the high side.

If she finds someone to help her with the statement, will the person also help her with the funds?

To the second part. Visa approval or denial depends on chain of factors and not just account statement alone. In some cases, the VO doesn't even request account statement.

To the third part. Affect you as how?, I have seen two to three siblings who studied in the US and came in at different time. Everyone's case is treated independently

PERSONAL OBSERVATION:

Most transcripts I've read here lately keep mentioning that their sponsor (uncle, father, etc) is into "REAL ESTATE".

Now, if you happen to be a VO and up to 70% of persons you interview each day keep repeating the same line when it comes to 'What does your sponsor do?' Won't that be a red flag for you?

I will personally get tired of hearing the term "he is into real estate". Tell me, are there no other ways of saying that? "If actually that's what your sponsor is into"

You have worked so hard and spent a lot to get to this stage. Please don't sound too vague and generalized in your responses or like you are just repeating a line you just copied somewhere online.

All the best to those scheduled for interview this week and the entire month.

What if the uncles are actually into real estate?

Most Schools won’t admit you with that GPA. Is this the final GPA after evaluation? I’d advice you evaluate your result if you haven’t.

2.9/4.0 is US scale and not Nigeria scale. Hence it looks like final GPA

To the bolded, that's not true. Couple of schools have minimum of 2.5/4.0 as requirements. My grade was lower than that and I was admitted and graduated.
