At last PDP wins

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the results of the gubernatorial election for the controversial Nasarawa local government area of Kano state.

Presenting the result on Monday evening, the Collation Officer, Prof. Ibrahim Khalil, said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 34,297 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 54,349 votes.

The result shows that PDP leads in the LG with a margin of 20,052 votes.

Prof. Khalil however said the Nasarawa LG result was for 10 out of the 11 wards of the Nasarawa local government as one ward, Gama, was not included.

Abiodun, during a press conference at his country home in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, accepted the victory, promising to be governor for all.

“I think a lot of lessons have been learnt from this experience. It has indeed been a journey. But I have since learnt that if you remain humble, resilient, have fortitude and keep hope alive, you can overcome any mountain. I have said it at different opportunities that this was an opportunity for God to show that he is indeed greater than man,” he said while fielding questions from journalists.

The governor-elect, who stressed that he was not angry with Amosun, said he won the election because he refused to resort to verbal attacks against the incumbent governor during electioneering.

Asked if he would probe the outgoing government, Abiodun said such was premature as there were more important things he first needed to pay attention to.

He said he planned to hit the ground running with public-private partnerships that would improve the lives of residents of the state and better the economy.

The incoming governor explained that the support from a former governor of the state, Gbenga Daniel, was reciprocal, saying there were no strings attached.

Policemen detailed to man the collation centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, have clashed with soldiers at the office.

The incident followed an argument between both parties over who should be in charge of security at the office, where the results of Saturday’s governorship election is being collated for the final announcement.

The soldiers were said to have asked the policemen to leave the premises, but the policemen later returned to the centre and insisted on taking charge of security there.

In the process, tear gas canisters were shot, causing panic among the INEC officials, party agents, and journalists, as well as election observers who were gathered there for the announcement of the results.

Some journalists were also alleged to have been manhandled by the security agents.

Abiodun is meeting Daniel, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other top party chieftains.

In attendance are former Deputy Governor, Alhaja Salmot Badru; PDP stalwart, Chief Mrs Iyabo Apampa; PDP State Leader, Chief Ogunjobi, among others.

Earlier in the day at the Remo Resource Centre, Daniel said decision and call on supporters to vote for Abiodun on Saturday, followed Ladi Adebutu’s loss at the c ourt on Wednesday.

Adebutu popularly known as Lado lost his bid for the PDP ticket to Buruji Kashamu.

A Federal High Court on Thursday dismissed suit seeking to disqualify the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Adedapo Abiodun.

An argument filed by Abdulrafiu Adesina Baruwa, with the APC, Abiodun and the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) as defendants claimed that Abiodun made false claim about his educational qualification, in the Form CF001 and the accompanying affidavit he submitted to INEC.

Baruwa claimed that Abiodun limited his educational qualification to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate, to avoid answering questions about his alleged non-participation in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Delivering judgment, on Thursday, Justice Adeniyi Of the FCT High Court 15 dismissed case against the governorship candidate, says NYSC certificate is not a constitutional requirement for electoral office. The Court said that Dapo Abiodun is qualified to contest in view of Section 177 of the Constitution.
