The Danladi Umar-led three-man Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday adjourned proceedings involving the charges of non-declaration of assets preferred against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, till January 22.

The tribunal adjourned the case after the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN), conceded that Onnoghen was improperly served with the charges and the summons.

But after a back-and-forth argument that went on for about 45 minutes, the prosecuting counsel conceded that the service of the charges and the summons ought to have been personally served on Onnoghen.

“By what the registrar has said, although the defendant was the one who directed his personal assistant to accept service on his behalf and what the law says is that he must be personally served.

“We agree that that the service should be properly done. The processes should be served personally on him.

“If, after the service is done, and the defendant is not present, we can then argue whether or not he needs to be present on the grounds that he has filed a motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has charged President Buhari to attend the upcoming presidential debate.

He stated this while reacting to the decision of Buhari to handover his reelection campaign to a national leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Buhari had disclosed his decision while inaugurating the APC Presidential Council, at the International Conference Centre, ICC, in Abuja, last week Monday.

Also, the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, had disclosed that Buhari may not attend the debate if he feels there are other viable options with which he can engage Nigerians.

However, Ibegbu stressed that Buhari must appear in person and not Tinubu because he, the president, needs to tell Nigerians what he has done since assuming office.

According to Ibegbu: “We can’t preempt anything because we are not part of Buhari’s programme but he has a moral duty to talk to his people on why he wants to rule for another four years.

“He has to come and talk to Nigerians on what he has done in the past four years and what he intends to do in the next four years, he can’t do it by proxy.

“If he doesn’t talk to Nigerians then he has no moral right to lead us. Tinubu or no Tinubu he must tell Nigerians in person what he has done in the last three and half years and it must not be by proxy.”

The Senator representing Kaduna Central District at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has described the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government’s order that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen should immediately vacate his office, as a ‘political assault on the sacred temple of justice.’

This was his reaction to the plan by the President Muhammadu Buhari government to arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, on Monday over charges on failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

The charges against Justice Onnoghen were filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal.


But reacting, Shehu Sani, while condemning the FG decision, said the move against the CJN should be resisted and rescinded.

He tweeted, “The move against the CJN onnoghen is a political assault on the sacred temple of justice; it should be resisted and rescinded.

“The government has moved in the crane to the Court in order to remove a Bench from the roof.


“This amount to throwing a bolt on the runway of our democracy and peace.”

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday described the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the worst Federal Government ever in the country’s history.

Wike, who spoke during a mobilisation meeting at Unit 7, Ward 9 of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, said Nigerians had suffered beyond measure under the Buhari administration.

The governor maintained that Nigerians should not expect any good from the Federal Government which he said had been fighting everyone.

He said that the current administration had also been fighting the judiciary so that they could manipulate the forthcoming general elections.

The governor stated, “The APC Federal Government is fighting everyone. They struggled to destroy the National Assembly and failed. They are also fighting the judiciary; so, they can rig the forthcoming elections. They are trying to intimidate the judiciary.

“This government has suffered Nigerians beyond measure. There is nothing good that will come out of this government. It is the worst Federal Government ever.”

Wike also called on Rivers people to vote out the APC-led Federal Government on February 16 to attract benefits to the state.

The governor said that Rivers people would queue behind the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the general elections.

He stated that in the 4,442 polling units in the state, the voters would vote out the APC Federal Government in unison, adding that since 2015, the Buhari administration had not executed any project in Rivers State.

The governor said that mobilisation for votes was happening at the unit level to carry all Rivers people along in the move to oust Buhari from the power.

He said, “Vote out Buhari and vote in Atiku Abubakar. Let Buhari and APC pack and leave the Presidential Villa. Buhari’s tenancy has expired.”

Wike urged the people of the state to be alert at their respective units to ensure that PDP got victory at all levels.

However, several calls and a text message to the state APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Chris Finebone, for him to react to the governor’s claim were neither answered nor replied as of press time.

The Senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki yesterday said that there is no way for the national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu to annex Kwara state ,even as he begged the people of the state to forgive whoever among the PDP candidates that might have offended them previously one way or the other to forgive them and vote for all the candidates because of him, and the interest of the state.

He said,”We must all come out with our permanent voters cards and come out enmasse during the polls to vote for all the PDP candidates and Alhaji Abubakar Atiku and Mr. Peter Obi as presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate respectively during the elections”

He therefore urged the PDP members to move to various households in the state and mobilised for the party so as to assist the party to win the forthcoming general elections in the state .

He said he would also continue with the good work of previous administration so as to continue to advance the needs of the rural populace.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to “immediately release” Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye from Police custody.

Speaking during his presidential campaign in Lokoja, Kogi State, yesterday, the former Vice President said Melaye’s continued detention was unjust.

Atiku described the lawmaker as one of the “vibrant members of the National Assembly.”

According to Abubakar, “I therefore urged the federal government to quickly release Melaye from police custody.”

The embattled lawmaker is currently in police custody over allegation of his thugs assaulting an officer.

Atiku, while addressing his supporters, had stated that PDP was the only party that can make Nigeria work again.

He insisted that the All Progressives Congress, APC, has brought poverty and injustice to the people of Nigeria

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO) says President Muhammadu Buhari has said that President Buhari’s Presidential Campaign Council needs to be vetted by the EFCC.

According to a statement by the PPCO spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party challenged President Buhari to prove he is a leader of integrity by handing over the list of his campaign council members to the EFCC for investigation.

The PPCO alleged that the president’s campaign council is laden with corrupt officials and persons of questionable character.

In its statement on Monday, the PPCO said that for the president to have selected, inaugurated and accepted to sit as Chairman of the council, then his fight against corruptions needs to be brought into questioning.

The PPCO urged the EFCC to get a copy of the list and commence investigation.

Similarly, the PPCO has asked the National Assembly to commence the process of the removal of Mrs Amina Zakari, from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The PPCO said its position is predicated on reports that Amina Zakari is related to President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement on Friday, the party claimed that the APC seeks to use Amina Zakari as a tool to rig the forthcoming election,

It said, “Having been rejected by Nigerians, Buhari is now using her as virus to compromise the independence of the commission, manipulate the electoral process and rig the Presidential election for him”.

The PPCO held that a credible electoral commission must be completely impartial, transparent, totally independent and immune from external control by interested entities.

They claimed that “These are qualities INEC can no longer lay claim to as long as Amina Zakari remains a member of the commission”.

“By foisting Mrs. Amina Zakari to lead the final process of the election, President Buhari is seeking a way to annex INEC, practically, take over the collation of results, and announce himself the winner” the opposition party alleged.

Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women and Youths Presidential Campaign Team, North-West Zone, says Kano State was strategic to the success of the party in the 2019 presidential election.

Bagudu said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

“The north-west is a very strategic zone because there has been a lot of development made by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The work that has been done speaks for itself, especially the rehabilitation and expansion of the Abuja- Kaduna-Kano expressway, among others in the zone.

“There are two ultra-modern hospitals, which the president inaugurated in Kano, so we salute the Federal Government and the government of Kano State.

“You know, Kano has a large block of voters and if we get it right, we tend to get the rest of northern Nigeria right,’’ she said.

Mrs. Bagudu also said that the Buhari administration had provided job opportunities to women and youths through the Federal Government’s agricultural loan scheme.

“This is the kind of change that the APC as a party has brought to Nigerians,’’ she added.

She also said that the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on her part, empowered women and youths in the zone through her Future Assured Programme.
