Tanzania under their impulsive tinpot dictator cooking national statistics https://www.economist.com/middle-east-and-africa/2020/07/23/why-tanzanias-statistics-look-fishy

A Potemkin economy - The Economist unveils KaziKazi make-believe sinking country

Quick history

After the cold war ended, much of Africa democratised and opened up. Few countries better embodied the feverish hope of the 1990s than Tanzania. It had suffered grievously in the 1960s and 1970s under its founding leader, Julius Nyerere. A nascent democracy was throttled by one-party rule. An economy with great potential was wrecked by “African socialism”. Some 11m peasants were forced into collective villages, where they went hungry.

In mid 90s - Kenya and South Africa - move in to save the sinking boat.

As state controls were relaxed, investment flowed in. Steady growth more than doubled income per person between 1994 and 2010.4

Now Magufuli is undoing all that.

John Magufuli, who was elected president in 2015, has turned back the clock on democracy by locking up opposition mps and journalists. He has also meddled capriciously in the economy. His government has shaken down firms for cash, arresting their executives and holding them without bail if they do not pay up. It is “almost ransom”,

The mess

Mr Magufuli sent in the army with orders to buy up the crop for 65% more than private traders offered. In the finest socialist traditions he did not pay the farmers for over 18 months. Since then the harvest has slumped by 30%. Farmers are reluctant to plant if they don’t expect to be paid

They forced IMF and WB to report their cooked figures
The imf raised doubts last year when it said there were “serious weaknesses” in the growth data. It pointed out that public-sector wages, lending to the private sector and imports were all falling while tax revenue was growing only weakly. The authors made it clear that the official 6.8% growth figure for 2017 was not credible. Publication of the report was blocked by the Tanzanian authorities. (The Economist has seen a copy.)

The economy is tanking neverthless.

Nonetheless, the concerns raised by the imf did not disappear like their report. Analysis by The Economist using the Tanzanian central bank’s own numbers for the most recent full fiscal year available (2018-19) shows that tax revenue has shrunk in real terms. Discrepancies such as these, says Thorsten Beck of Cass Business School, are “red signals” that gdp may have been overestimated.

IMF cannot do much when you decide to cook Nigeria style.

. “We’re not forensic accountants,” he says. Its latest health check in February has also not been published. The press release that usually accompanies these reports is positive

Magufuli wrecking their economy

Foreign direct investment has almost halved since 2013.
Exports and imports both fell between 2012 and 2018.
Imports of machinery and construction equipment fell between 2015 and 2018, despite claims of booming construction. “

The growth numbers are out of line with almost everything else we are seeing out of Tanzania,” says Justin Sandefur of the Centre for Global Development, a think-tank.

Poverty is increasing - Nigeria style.

Tanzania’s recent growth ought to be evident in ordinary lives. When incomes rise, people buy more beer; yet revenue for Tanzania’s biggest brewer fell in 2018 and 2019. According to door-to-door surveys done in 2012 and 2018, the share of Tanzanians who are extremely poor, 49%, did not change at all over the period. That is almost unheard of. And because Tanzania’s population is growing, the number of extremely poor people has increased by about 4.5m.

Conclusion
Bernard Membe, a former foreign minister who has defected to the opposition, says growth is “exaggerated” and “in fact is less than 3%”. What about Tanzania’s middle-income status? “A very big joke,” says Mr Membe
Great a report from a man who denied a chance to run for president under the CCM banner saying Tanzania is cooking up figures. The decrease in Taxes in Tanzania is due to the nation deciding to ease the burden of COVID on all tax payers. Plus, the GDP growth isn't parallel with tax collection.
Import of construction material has slowed since Tanzania now produces most of its own construction material such as pipe, gypsums and other material.
And this fool say when income rises people buy more beer, the same people who send their fathers to the hospital on liver related problems.
This article is a f$*cking joke.

Such statistics or averages are easily available. You can ask your milk man next time you see him.
So you asked the milk men in Tanzania and they told you that they produce 1 ltr per day?

I thought everyone has their cow. If they were doing so well - why the malnutrition rates. My friend a Maasai cow producing 1 litre of milk is not enough to sell to the neighborhood. The reality is every rural Tanzania has one or two lactacting cow producing less than enough milk for their own families...they produce 1-1.5 liters per day...not enough to feed large rural families.

For urban areas, you need Kenya dairies, to come sell milk there.

Not everyone has a cow in Tanzania, that like assuming that all Americans own a Tesla. The further away you move from the city the more likely you will find cattle keepers and most people in the city use processed milk. And about producing 1 ltr do you also milk the cows to know that statistics.

Your dairy sector is nothing to write home about. You have twice as much land as Kenya. Nearly Twice as much cattle. But you milk production is way lower than Kenya. Uganda I think is doing better because they learnt from kenya.

Kenya we overtook South Africa by investing in AI services - Artificial Insemination - to get Holstein, Freshian, name them - cows from Europe that can produce 25 litres per day.You typical cow produce I bet 1-2 litres per day.

Kenya has Africa largest herd of modern dairy cows - I think nearly 4Million cows now. These are cows that can cost as high as 3-5k dollars.

We have Africa highest milk consumption per capita. While you're busy eating cassava and sweat potatos - and suffering malnutrition

Please answer my previous question also.

Most Tanzanian own cows and supply fresh milk to their neighbors that the government does not collect data from. Most of the data about milk consumption are from processed milk and most of Tanzanians prefer fresh unprocessed milk and they can easily get it a better price from their farmer neighbor.

Invest in hybrid cattle..learn from Kenya with I bet highest number of modern dairy cows in Africa
Can you please give a detailed explanation on why Tanzania should invest in hybrid cattle and how are the cattle that they have right now fall behind compared to the hybrid cattle, and also provide proof that Tanzania does not have hybrid cattle already.

But they don’t sell their cows do they, they keep the cows for their milk and blood, Tanzania still imports milk and beef, even though they have over 20 million cows. The productivity of the cows isn’t very high that’s what I mean by subsistent farming they farm for themselves not for an industry which is where the problem is.
They don't have to sell them to calculated in their net worth. When they say for instance that Bezos has $70B in Amazon shares that isn't hard cash but rather the sum of the value of shares he owns, he doesn't have to sell them to be calculated as so.
Also what percentage of the meat consumed in Tanzania is imported? When you get the value you see it not that big of a problem.

Do u believe that lie of 1,000 dollars?

Check this dude below.A guy has about 2,000 cows. This is a guy who managed to unearth the world's biggest tanzanite gemstone. He sold and was quickly pronounced as Tanzania's newest millionaire. And all along he was classified as poor in all official data ( IMF, world bank, and gov data).

But that was a lie!
Anyone who owns 2,000 cows isn't poor! And to prove that,a guy had some of his children studying in private school.Yes,he afforded that by selling some of his cows.Look at how he dresses,no designer clothes, no big watches!

So this man, with all his 2,000 cows was recorded as poor. All,or most of 30+ million cows in TZ are owned by ordinary folks who are said to be poor. But is that true? Can a poor man afford to own 2,000 cows? Can a poor man manage to send his children to private schools?

That is how TZ is underreported in many many sectors

That is exactly what is was thinking of.... Tanzanian aren't poor in the term of wealth owned but rather poor in how much in the bank you have. In the US a person owning 5 acres of land wouldn't be considered poor in anyway, since their net worth would be the sum of value of all assets minus the debts they have. In Tanzania it is not hard to see a "poor farmer" with 20 acres of land or more or with 500+ cows. Taking Laizer as a study case a cow in Tanzania sells for about $700 so 2000 would be $1,400,000 he would be ranked as a millionaire in Europe or the States but in Tanzania he is a poor cattle owner.

La hasha wink I don't know what you mean by internationally respected but the institute in Dar is easily rivalled by the Research Institute of Swahili Studies of Eastern Africa (RISSEA) in Mombasa. And BAKITA is a national body responsible for standardizing Swahili IN Tanzania not globally. Kenya has a similar body as does UG. BAKITA coordinates its activities with similar bodies in Kenya and Uganda. That's why the phrase we were disagreeing on is slightly different in Kenya and Tanzania. The only difference is that what BAKITA approves becomes gospel in Tz even on the streets while in Kenya or Uganda people will use the Swahili they want not the one they're told. wink
Tanzanian Swahili is standard Swahili that is why in most cases other EA nations have a hard time to understand Tz Swahili because it is THE Swahili other nations mostly mix them with other native tongue or foreign languages. Once a Kenyan man in a Tz daladala said "Sisi Kenya huwa hatusimami kwa basi" impling they travel seated on the buses in Kenya but the the right terminology was "Sisi Kenya huwa hatusimami kwenye basi" since "Kusimama kwa basi" mean "Stand by bus" while "Kusimama kwenye basi" means "Stand in buses"some people started teasing him but later corrected him. Is the same with German, Germany, Austria, Switzeland and Luxemburg speak German but only Austrian and Germany dialect are considered the correct German. That is why BAKITA has a more influential role globally.

Nope, it was to curb kenyan professionals from taking your jobs. Your kids after 12yrs of education cannot construct an English sentence. Stick with one track.

To quote this

Some analysts attributed this high failure rate to the sudden switch to English as the medium of instruction in secondary school. The expectation that children leaving public primary schools should enter secondary school and take lessons for all subjects in English language is both callous and ludicrous. English fluency is equally poor among secondary school teachers and officials of the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (Necta).

Kenyan professionals my foot, If you were that good why give all the major contracts in your country to the Chinese?

I'm not saying its wrong but the way Tanzanian and Kenyans speak Kiswahili is different....Like Americans and Britons.....
"Nigeria ni nchi ya watu washenzi sana. Wanafaa kufungua macho na kujua kwamba hawako ligi yetu." a Tanzanian would use fewer words and say " Wanaijeria ni washenzi sana. Wanabidi wajue hawako sawa na sisi" or "Wanaijeria ni washenzi. Wanabidi watambue hatuko ligi sawa" plus on the bolded Tanzanian would use KUONA in most cases instead of KUJUA.

You cannot suddenly switch the language instruction in upper schools and expect kids to get anything. They will be disoriented like most of Tanzanians.

If you can make your own stuff like Chinese or Germans - go ahead and speak anything you want. But if you're a poor country like Tanzania depending on the international market you better be good in English.
Well, we are and the kids do understand. Just because it could be hard for Kenyans that doesn't mean it will be hard for Tanzanian and its not a sudden change, again, they learn English as an independent subject when in high school it becomes the language of instruction. They get a foundation of the language before they start using it as a means of instruction. Plus, there are a lot of countries that depend on the international market and still use their own language, your statement is invalid.
And for a Kenyan to call Tanzania poor, the irony.
