THE NEXT VERSION - HONEYCOMB IS ALREADY BEING DEMONSTRATED BY ANDY RUBIN

Andy Rubin Teases Honeycomb-Running, Video Chat-Featuring, Dual-Core Processor-Packing Motorola Tablet

While the announcement everyone was expecting Andy Rubin to make at today’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference was already made earlier today, the head of Android operations still had a few things hidden up his sleeves, not the least of which was a dual-core Motorola tablet:

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dmobileandyrubin0454.jpg https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dmobileandyrubin0447.jpg

If that didn’t catch your attention, consider this: the man himself said that it will run Honeycomb, will feature video chat, and will be powered by a "dual-core 3D NVIDIA processor." Additionally, Engadget, whose editor-in-chief was sitting at the event, noticed that the tablet has no buttons at all, for better or for worse. However, to make up for it, the Honeycomb UI appears to have been greatly refined, especially the Gmail app (seen above in the picture on the left).

Unfortunately, the closest thing we got to a release date was the statement that the tablet will be "out sometime next year."

It’s got some interesting pre-release tid-bits about it:

1. Video Chat
2. NVIDIA Processor
3. Dual core 3D processor
4. Honeycomb

The Battery use part of the settings also received a complete overhaul, which, unfortunately, we can’t yet see in full glory, as the emulator is never on battery.

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-01-16-01-PM_wm.png

The new default software keyboard is extremely sexy (click the images to see the large version, which really shows the new keyboard in all its splendor):

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/keyboard_wm1.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/keyboard2_wm.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/keyboard3_wm.png

The dialer is now very dark and kind of gloomy looking. At first, I thought it didn’t render properly. Are we in perma-night mode?

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dialer_wm.png

For some reason, the Gingerbread emulator instance is CRAWLING slow. I’ve fired up the Froyo and Donut instances side by side, and while those fly pretty fast, the Gingerbread one stutters and even gave me an ANR in the browser (Application Not Responding). However, Google’s own Brian Swetland is assuring Android users that Gingerbread will be the nippiest version yet, so we have no fears in that regard.

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/anr_wm.png

That was a quick rundown through the new Gingerbread UI. Now I am moving on to the new features of Eclipse ADT, which are likely to make Android developers much less disgruntled (if you’ve ever developed for Android, you know how frustrating the environment can be).

Walkthrough And Hands-On With The Gingerbread UI And The New Gingerbread Keyboard In All Its Sexiness

As you may have seen, Google took the covers off Gingerbread today and released the new SDK, which allowed me to immediately jump into an emulated Gingerbread instance. After running around the new UI for a while, I’ve taken a bunch of screenshots, which you can find below, along with some of my notes.

Before I dive into the Gingerbread screenshots, here is a side-by-side comparison of the same Settings screen in Donut (1.6), Froyo (2.2), and Gingerbread (2.3):

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-01-06-01-PM.donut_wm.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-01-06-01-PM.froyo_wm.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-01-06-01-PM_wm.png
From left to right: Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread

As you can see, not much has changed since Froyo, except most of the elements got darker and/or greener. Below, you will see the new checkbox, dropdown, and radio button styles, which are also darker and more defined. Frankly, I like the new UI.

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/device_wm.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/apps_wm.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-1-03-13-PM_wm.png https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-1-02-42-PM_wm.png

When you reach the end of a list during scrolling, you now get a nice orange glow effect on the bottom:

https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/12-6-2010-12-59-51-PM_wm.png

The Application setting screen has also undergone some revamping – you can see a funnel-like UI element on the bottom and a nice status bar showing free/used space. There is also more application info now, which shines a lot more light on what each entry in the list is doing.

Its quite unfortunate that poverty had destroyed every moral fibre of an average Nigerian, its so bad that, people consider travelling out of the country as the best thing that can happen to anybody, but the unpalatable truth is that not all journey abroad is rewarded with the much sought after golden fleece! There are many Nigerians here where i am that are really a bunch of disgrace to d name of our country, sometimes its so bad that when i'm asked about my nationality, i just told them i'm from West Africa, the inquisitive ones will ask "where in west Africa?" i just mumble Nigeria and immediately u'll see the change in their looks!
@Bola, we cant really put all the blame on her family, the blame should also be on the government that has so bastadised the country dat the only way out is to seek for escape, this is the only country in the world where less than 2% of the population i.e. National Assembly members taking home over 25% of our recurrent expenditure, the obscene pay of those in government is mind boggling shocked

A teenager, who found herself in Tripoli, Libya, narrates her tortuous journey through the Sahara Desert, and how some desperate groups recruit young Nigerian girls for prostitution in the North African country to Comfort Oseghale

https://www.punchng.com/images/December/Saturday/pix201012041132442.jpg

Bola, a 15-year-old Senior Secondary School pupil in Ikorodu, Lagos, has had her world turned around in one month without preparing for it. While her peers were taking summer classes last August, she was one of several girls who were being transported in trucks across the Sahara Desert to Libya. She is, however, lucky to still be alive to tell the story.

As a pupil in boarding, Bola spends nearly all of her time at school. “I am on a scholarship; I have been on it since I was in Primary Four,” she says. The only child of divorced parents, she spends most of her holidays either at the boarding house or the home of her school proprietor, who lives within the school premises. Last August while the school session drew to a close, and her peers made plans for holiday lessons, Bola decided to take up a holiday job.

“I told my mum that I wanted to get a job during the holidays; I wanted save some money before I gain admission into the university. My mum told me her pastor assists the members with jobs. I had to wait though for my aunt, Lola, who was at Ilesa, then trying to get admission into the university because my mother arranged that the pastor would help the two of us to get holiday jobs. A few days later, Lola joined Bola in Lagos and the girls went to Ikorodu to meet the pastor.

A woman known to everyone as Mama Blessing showed up moments later. She is the pastor’s friend. And with this set-up, the journey of these girls to Tripoli, Libya, began. The prophet and Mama Blessing, it turned out, only tricked people to recruit young girls for a prostitution ring in the North African country.

But in an interview with SATURDAY PUNCH at the office of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Ikeja, Lagos, where she is currently being detained, Mama Blessing claimed ignorance of the trafficking trade. “I am just a trader and sell foodstuffs at the market. Pastor knew that my daughter Blessing had come in from Libya and she asked me to assist Bola and Lola in finding jobs in Libya. All I did was to hand them over to my daughter,” she claimed.

As Bola recalled, the girls were taken to the Ogolonto, Ikorodu, Lagos, residence of Mama Blessing from where they were to take off days later to Kano in company with one Ibrahim, a friend of Blessing, while Bola and Lola were oblivious that the journey to Libya had begun. The young girls were joined by two other girls, who came with Ibrahim. “Ibrahim kept making calls during the journey. It seemed he was receiving directions from someone,” Bola said. At Kano, the group was met by a Hausa man driving a Golf car; they were to continue the next phase of their journey with him. After a while, two motorcycles trailed the Golf car. “I was scared when I noticed them. It was not until we stopped that I realised that the cyclists were meant for us,” she added. After three trips, everyone was ferried across safely into Niger Republic by the motorcyclists. “The network signal on my phone changed to an Orange symbol and I then realised that we were in another country. We were kept in a hut and warned not to make any noise,” Bola said.

Shortly after, Bola and her fellow travellers were joined by a group of boys and girls, who were being led by Blessing and her accomplice. It was a congregation of various Nigerian tribes and African nations. “There were Igbo, Bini, Ishan and Yoruba. There were also Ghanaians,” Bola recalled. A few days later, they moved again, this time by bus: at night. Describing this journey as terrifying, Bola said the group encountered rebels on the way. She said, “At a point, some Nigerien rebels were shooting at the bus and trying to stop, but the driver continued moving. I was told that if we stopped, we would be robbed and all the girls despoiled.”

Eventually, the bus made it to Dirkou, where the girls spent a few more days with their traffickers, sequestered from prying eyes. “We moved again from Dirkou to Agadez in an open-air pick-up truck. We were loaded into the back of the truck like animals and had to sit tightly packed together,”she said. The journey was more horrifying than the last for Bola. The sun was so hot that when the travellers stopped for a brief rest, their shoes almost melted ontheir feet in the hot sand. The desert route was littered with the bones of animals and dead travellers who had gone before them. The ride was bumpy and rough. Once, the truck in which Bola was loaded with others, had an accident; it fell on its side and turned again on its head, emptying its human cargo on top of the corpses that littered the desert.

“I lost consciousness while the other girls screamed. My clothes were pulled from me and they poured water on me before I revived. Meanwhile, our Arab driver started beating us. He was angry because he had warned us earlier not to make any noise. With the help of fellow travellers who were coming behind us in pick-ups, we were able to bring up the fallen truck,” she said.

At Agadez, all the girls were interviewed separately, “It was during the interview I was told we were being taken to Libya for prostitution; I refused and told my interviewer there was no way I would become a love-peddler, that I was still a virgin,” Bola said. Unknown to her, one Ade, a member of the ring, who interviewed her, had contacted Bola’s prospective master in Libya, named Gani with the news. “It was later I discovered that Gani had ordered Ade to do what he could to deflower me,” said the teenager, who alleged that Ade despoiled her a few days after the interview. “I bled profusely, it was terrible.” she lamented.

Not long after this, the contingent started the journey to their final destination in Libya. “We were loaded into about 16 trailers, girls and boys from various countries and all the vehicles moved in a convoy. The journey was rough because of the rocks and sand along the road. At times, some of us would be thrown into the air with each bump,” she said, recalling a moment when a young girl fell off one of the trucks. “We had to scream and shout for the driver to stop because he couldn’t speak English. Eventually, he stopped and went to get her.” According to Bola, it took three days to get to Libya by road from Agadez. “I later learnt that the trailer Blessing boarded took about two weeks to get to Libya because it broke down on the way.”

Once in Libya, the girls were handed over to their various ‘masters,’ who had paid for them. She continued, “I was taken to Gani, who owned a brothel and was told that I had to work and pay off my debt of $3,000. Despite my protests, cotton was forced into me before the start of work after which it was removed. The cotton was meant to prevent spermatozoa from getting inside me. Each time the cotton wool was pulled out, I bled again.

However, salvation came for Bola through a Sudanese customer. “I was to spend the night with him. I took the advantage of the opportunity and used his phone to call my mum,” added the distressed senior secondary pupil, who explained that the emotional conversation was in Yoruba. Bola’s mum was devastated.

Even at that, help did not come immediately. “I fell ill shortly after that. I kept bleeding and my private part was swollen. Gani then sent me away to live with his friends so I could get better. They didn’t take me to a hospital because they didn’t want to incur more expenses, but kept treating me at home,” she said. Words of Bola’s predicament soon spread among the Yoruba community in Libya until it got to the members of the Oodua Peoples Congress. Bola continued, “They were very angry with Gani because he was one of them. They told me that any girl being brought to Libya was usually told what to expect and given a choice to either accept or decline the offer. They said since I was a virgin and had declined the offer of prostitution.” It was the pressure the OPC mounted on Gani that eventually forced him to pay for my flight to Nigeria. He had to quickly arrange for a travelling certificate and bought me clothes and shoes.”

Now that she is back home, Bola is anxious to continue with her education. “I just want to quickly get back to school and continue from where I left off. I don’t mind taking extra classes to make up what I have lost so I can write my WASC next year. I feel sorry though for the girls I left behind and those whose bones littered the desert. I met a girl who had actually completed her youth service before she was brought to Libya by her aunt. So many like that have lost hope of returning to Nigeria,” she added.

Politics › Finally! Army Grants 27 Convicted Soldiers Pardon by na2day(op): 5:28am On Dec 04, 2010
Reprieve finally came the way of the 27 soldiers of the Nigerian Army attached to the 323 Artillery Regiment, Owena Barracks, Akure, Ondo State, who were sentenced to life imprisonment and later seven years jail term, as the Army Council has granted them pardon.

https://www.saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/page_images/news/2010/soldiers.jpg?1291413830

The Army Council, chaired by the Minister of Defence, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN), who represented the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, however, discharged the affected soldiers from service on Friday.

The Director of Information, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who confirmed the decision of the Army Council, said that the affected soldiers would be paid all their full benefits.

It was learnt that the current decision was a direct fallout of a predominant feeling in the Army that the issue of the soldiers referred to as the ‘Akure 27’ be revisited.

An investigation by SATURDAY PUNCH showed that the Army Council had to reconsider the matter because the earlier verdict had the approval of the council.

“It is confirmed that the soldiers have been pardoned. They are, however, discharged from the Army. They will receive their full benefits,” the army spokesman said.

It was further learnt that the process leading to the eventual pardon of the Akure 27 was taken under the leadership of the new Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Onyeabo Ihejirika.

The 27 soldiers, who served in the 15th battalion of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, had demonstrated openly on the streets of Akure to protest the non-payment of the allowances meant for them while they were on the peacekeeping operation in the West African country on September 4 and 5, 2009.

The soldiers, who were being owed about six months’ salary arrears, were expected to be paid $1,228 per month.

As a consequence of their protest, which was considered a wilful violation of military rules, they were arrested and charged before a military court martial led by Brig.-Gen. Ishaya Bauka, which found them guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment in July 2010.

The Bauka panel found them guilty of mutiny in violation of Section 52(2) of the Armed Forces Act.

The judgement, which attracted sustained public outcry from all segments of the society, was later reviewed and converted to seven years by the army high command.

The affected soldiers are Sergeant Akwara Oliver, Corporals Princewell Onwunare, Paul Maikudi and Abass Salisu, Lance Corporals Okani Pope, Lawal Abubakar, Pascal Stephen, John Felix, Yomi Ibukun, Loveday Mmapie, Umar Abdulkadir, Musa Salisu, Innoncent Egbuna, Wanogho Shedrack and Bello Zaharaeed.

The others are Privates Chukwuda Onwukanjo, Jonathan Komo, Samuel Ogbe, Esther Nkawor, Mary Idoko, Olanihun Yetunde, Anthogan Jonathan, Salisu Ibrahim, Aderaloye Olalekan, Kabiru Mohammed and Anukan Kelechi.

Andrea and Amy fish on a serene lake. Their conversation is strained, however -- the pair were born 12 years apart and don't appear to have much in common. They talk of their father, who taught them different approaches to fishing. "He knew we were so different," Amy says. "He knew you needed to catch the fish and I needed to throw them back." The thought of their parents nearly brings both ladies to tears. It's a touching moment.

Meanwhile, the gang of would-be rescuers has just discovered Merle's severed hand on an Atlanta rooftop. Angry Daryl, who holds T-Dog responsible for his brother's predicament, aims his hand cannon at the man. Rick, in turn, points his own gun at Daryl, urging the hillbilly to stand down , or else. The tension subsides (somewhat) and Daryl picks up his bro's hand, wrapping it in a bandana for safe keeping. The group follows Merle's blood trail , and discovers a few slaughtered zombies along the way. Apparently, Merle remains pretty handy at killing the undead -- even with one hand.

Back at camp, Jim furiously digs a series of holes -- so furiously that he ignores (or doesn't hear) Dale's offer of water. In fact, the survivor appears oblivious to everybody. "Hey, Jim?" Shane asks. "I'm just a little concerned, man." Jim continues to dig and -- after calling Shane's leadership into question -- takes a swing at the cop with the shovel. Shane tackles the digger and cuffs him. "The only reason I got away because the dead were too busy eating my family," Jim cries. The man is clearly unhinged.

CUT to Glenn, who gives a detailed plan of how the rescue team will search the streets. The strategy covers all angles. "You got some balls for a Chinaman," Daryl sneers. Says Glenn: "I'm Korean." Spits Daryl: "Whatever." The team then hits the streets, which are filled with walkers. Glenn is able to grab the bag of weapons left behind by Rick, but is then accosted by living members of a street gang! The gang members shove Glenn into their car and SPEED away. One of the gang, however, is left behind , and the young man is immediately corralled by T-Dog and a seething Daryl.

Back at the camp, Shane has tied Jim to a tree , for his own safety, of course. Jim apologizes to the children for scaring them. And why was he digging? "Something I dreamt last night," explains Jim, who can't remember the details. He then urges Sara to keep Carl close. "Never let him out of your sight," he says. Sara nods in understanding.

The rescue team, in the meantime, interrogates the captured punk, who refuses to provide any info. Daryl then shows the punk Merle's severed hand, claiming HE did the cutting. The punk shakes in fear , and then talks. Moments later, the rescue team arrives at the hideout of the gang, which is led by a man named Guillermo. Rick proposes trading the Glenn for the young punk, but Guillermo refuses. He wants the bag of guns. Only then will the gang surrender Glenn.

The rescue team retreats to their makeshift headquarters, where the guns are stashed. Not surprisingly, Daryl doesn't want to give up the guns , but Rick disagrees. The sheriff explains that Glenn saved him from the inside of a tank. Rick plans to return the favor. So, moments later, the team approaches the gang hideout for the second time. The young punk is bound and gagged as he is pushed inside at gunpoint , and then freed.

"You have your man, I want mine," says Rick, who refuses to surrender the bag of weapons. MANY guns are drawn and pointed when an old lady suddenly parts the crowd. It is a grandmother of one of the gang members. Rick assures the abuela that he is not there to arrest her kin. The old lady then leads Rick and the rescuers inside an attached old-folks home. Turns out that the group is caring for the residents -- and are willing to fight for weapons and medicine to do so. "The staff took off," explains Guillermo, who was a custodian at the facility. "Just left them here to die." The gang members act as security. Sympathetic, Rick then hands over a few weapons to help the cause.

Later, the rescue team heads back to their van , only the vehicle has gone missing. "Who would take it?" Glenn asks. Answers Rick: "Merle." Even Daryl winces -- his brother probably went back to camp , for revenge. CUT to camp, where Shane decides to free Jim so he can join the survivors for a fish fry. Everybody is enjoying the food and chatting -- Dale gives the group a Faulkner lesson -- when zombies suddenly attack the camp! Ed is bitten! Another walker takes a chunk out of Amy's neck! Andrea SCREAMS as her sister bleeds out. Shane opens FIRE. Morales and Jim BASH zombies with bats.

Just then, the rescue team arrives for another rescue. They FIRE their weapons repeatedly. Zombie brains splatter the campsite. Suddenly, all is quiet save for a weeping Andrea, who hunches over her sister's lifeless body. "Amy!" she screams. "Amy!" The remainder of the survivors watch in horror. Whispers Jim: "I remember my dream now , why I dug the holes."

We are getting there sha!
If u're into motion pictures u'll notice some of the shots are very poor and the post production
is below par, especially the colour grading of the film.
The issue is not how many hollywood xters they are able to pile up in the film but the quality, i mean the quality of the sceenplay, the acting and most importantly, the post production!
Compare the color grading of any hollywood film u've watched (not the alaba camera rips) to the color grading of the trailer!
But nice try sha!

I beg you, sir, FLEE from the Blackberry Torch. FLEE!! FLEE!!

The BB Torch is still around 100k. Use that money to buy a Samsung Galaxy S for 80 - 85k. It's vastly superior.

I cannot understand why people can open their eyes and spend 100K and above for a BB Torch. That's one phone that isnt worth the money.
Honestly i dont know what people see in blackberry,

@ okija juju
dont jump on the crackberry bandwagon o, be different, buy an android powered phone, people might not notice it from afar, but when they get close and see the beauty, they'll be blown away! grin grin
HTC DESIRE Z is a beauty so also Samsung Galaxy S grin - their screens are fantastic!

Fashola handled that impressively!
But that does not stop the fact that he had to hire a private firm to collect tax on behalf of the state, that is sheer madness! and he was boldly defending it in Uk?
Imagine united states or uk hiring private firms to collect their taxes? huh

My homeboy just got the latest HTC Desire Z yesterday and it looks great.

I just got a Job in Nigeria and would be relocting soon. I have long been a fan of the HTC phones (esp the TYTN), but now that I will be returning to Nigeria, I am wondering if any of the service providers have a comprehensive plan that would support the Desire Z?!
Honestly, i don't know but i'll find out when i also get home in december
