Frank Lampard has been named as Derby County’s new manager after signing a three-year deal at Pride Park.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder has been looking to take his first step into management and confirmed over the weekend that he had been talking with officials at Derby. The East Midlands club, who lost to Fulham in the Championship play-off semi-finals, have been without a manager since Gary Rowett left to take over at Stoke City last week but have now confirmed the 39-year-old’s appointment.

“We want to build on the club’s top-six finish in the Championship last season, while at the same time bringing through some of the excellent youth and academy talent we have at Pride Park.

“This is my first job as a manager, but I’ve worked closely with some of the best coaches in the game and I’m confident in my own abilities and those of the team around me, including the board. I know it won’t be easy – managing a football team never is – but I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Lampard retired as a player in 2016 after a spell at New York City. He started his career at West Ham and, either side of his long period with Chelsea, had stints with Swansea City (on loan) and Manchester City. He made 106 appearances for England.

President Muhammadu Buhari will finally sign the ‘Not Too Young to Run’ bill on Thursday, May 31, 2018.

The president had revealed during his Democracy Day address on Tuesday, May 29, that he would sign the bill soon.

“In a few days I will be joined by many promising young Nigerians to sign into law the ‘Not Too Young to Run’ Bill,” he said.

The president took to his official Twitter account (@MBuhari) early on Thursday to announce that he’ll be joined by a group of young Nigerians to sign the bill at the Presidential Villa.

He posted, “Today I look forward to welcoming to the State House another group of young Nigerians, as I sign into law the #NotTooYoungToRun Bill.”

The ‘Not Too Young To Run’ bill seeks to reduce the age limit for those seeking elective positions in the country.

The bill will alter Sections 65, 106, 131, and 177 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as it seeks to reduce the age of qualification for the office of the President from 40 to 35 years; Governor from 35 to 30 years; Senate from 35 to 30 years; House of Reps from 30 to 25 years; and the House of Assembly from 30 to 25 years.

​The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the July 14 polls in Ekiti State, John Kayode Fayemi, has picked former Executive Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government, Chief Adebisi Adegboyega Egbeyemi, as his running mate.

A statement from JKF Campaign office in Ado-Ekiti disclosed that 74-year-old Egbeyemi was picked in the late hours of Wednesday, after party leaders met for long hours.

The statement, which was signed by Wole Olujobi said Egbeyemi’s choice came after speculations by the expectant public spread that certain eminent indigenes of the state had been picked to fly the ticket with Fayemi in the July 14, 2018 governorship poll.

Egbeyemi, an indigene of Ado-Ekiti, was born on May 8, 1944 to the family of the late Egbeyemi Alade and late Madam Tinubu Egbeyemi.

He started his education at the Holy Trinity Anglican School, Ilawe-Ekiti and Baptist School, Ado-Ekiti, after which he attended Harding Memorial Modern School, Ado-Ekiti.

He studied privately while working as a Laboratory Assistant at Ekitiparapo College, Ido-Ekiti, and while working as a bursar at Notre Dame Grammar School, Usi-Ekiti, Egbeyemi sat as a private student to pass both the GCE O’Level and Advanced Level examinations.

He later proceeded to the University of Lagos College of Education where he graduated in Biology and Physical Education with distinction. He taught briefly at the St Mary’s Girls Secondary School, Ikole-Ekiti, in 1975 before he was transferred to the Teachers’ College, Oye-Ekiti, as a pioneer Physical Education tutor between 1975 and 1977.

He later went to the University of Ife to read Law between 1977 and 1980 before proceeding to the Law School in Lagos for his Barrister at Law certificate and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981 as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

His political experiences spanned many fields, including the Youth Leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) between 1979 and 1983; a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly in 1983; and Executive Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government between 1991 and 1993.

Others include Leader of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in Ado-Ekiti Local Government between 1996 and 1997 and was founding member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), using the platform to win the House of Representatives election that was cancelled by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, in 1998.

Between 1991 and 1992, he was Commissioner of Education and between 2001 and 2002, Egbeyemi was a member of the Governing Council of the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna.

A receiver of many awards, the lawyer was appointed the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General between 2002 and 2003.

He was a founding member and Leader of the Action Congress in Ado-Ekiti Local Government and currently a foremost leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State.

A top chieftaincy title holder in Ado-Ekiti, Egbeyemi is married with children.

Barely one month after Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy, Osun State was embroiled in a 'sex for marks' scandal, a female student of the University of Lagos has reached out to LIB to share her sad and depressing story of molestation in the hands of one of her lecturers who according to her is a proffesor in the English Department.



The student (name withheld) managed to get nude photos of her molester in one of their 'encounters' and according to her;

I have been suffering this for months now. Whenever students go to his office for anything he is always trying to touch you. I took pictures of him on one of the days I entered his office. He has made molestation a part of him. I’m even scared for my life in Unilag. That’s why I’m reaching out to you so he can be stopped.

She went on to add that;



He is a professor in the English department, Faculty of Arts. I am not his first victim. He does this all the time to students. I have completely given up when it comes to academics he has failed me on tests before. When I talked to him concerning it he told me I should know what to do I am an adult. I feel so dirty for even allowing such an old man touch me. But he doesn’t even care.



As long as you satisfy his wants. I’m tired of everything. He should be stopped before he ruins the lives of other innocent girls in that English department. When he touches me I am always in tears but it doesn’t stop him. Please this is why i am reaching out all I want is for him to be stopped. He is destroying the mental state of girls in Unilag.



I just want him stopped. I reached out because I don’t want him to continue molesting girls. The English department is like a cult. The lecturers have information amongst themselves. They talk about the girls they have slept with and the ones they plan to sleep with. It has been going on for years.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has entered judgment against music video director, Clarence Peters, for alleged copyright infringement.

The judgment delivered by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun was in favour of Uwana Victor and Akan Victor, trading under the name, Black Alliance.

According to reports,the judge, in the May 4, 2018 judgment, held that,

“In the circumstances of this case, I have no doubt that the defendant (Peters) took advantage of the plaintiffs and infringed on their copyright.

“Both general and special damages are compensatory damages. General damages are loses which flow naturally from the defendant’s conduct and its quantum need not be pleaded or proved as it is generally presumed by law.

“…I believe that the plaintiffs’ claim for damages amount to general damages and in the circumstance, I believe general damages will adequately take care of the loses occasioned by the defendant’s conduct. The sum of N5m only is awarded against the defendant.”

Peters has, however, headed for the Court of Appeal, seeking to set aside the judgment.

MURIC WELCOMES JOLLY NYAME’S SENTENCE



Ex-Governor Jolly Nyame was yesterday sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory headed by Justice Adebukola Banjoko. The judge also ordered the refund of the sum of N1.64 billion diverted by the ex-governor since May, 2007. Mr Nyame spearheaded the fraudulent transfer of funds from the Taraba state’s treasury to Saman Global, a company which supplies office equipment and stationeries but the goods were never delivered.



The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) commends the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for doing a thorough investigation.



We also laud the judge who delivered the landmark judgement for her boldness and forthrightness. There is no doubt that her pronouncement will serve as a deterrent for other kleptomaniacs in public service. This judgement marks the beginning of active participation of the judiciary and its cooperation with the executive in anti-graft war.



In addition, we give kudos to the Federal Government (FG) for vigorously pursuing the war against corruption. Nyame’s imprisonment has cemented the resolve of this administration to bring about change in Nigeria. This will bring to five the number of ex-governors sent to jail since the beginning of President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption.



Although he was later set free, James Bala Ngilari, ex-governor of Adamawa State, bagged five years in March 2017. Babangida Aliyu, former Niger State governor, tasted the bitter pill on 25th April, 2017 when he was remanded in prison. Sule Lamido, ex-governor of Jigawa State was also remanded in prison on 2nd May, 2017. Jonah Jang, the former governor of Plateau State was remanded in prison custody on May 16, 2018. It is an unprecedented challenge of the status quo ante.



MURIC therefore calls on Nigerians to show appreciation for this positive development. It implies that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Those who had lost hope in the Nigerian project should now reposition themselves as more evidence has emerged to prove that the stage is set for a better Nigeria.



The main reason for people losing hope in this country has been the general lack of accountability. Crooks in government were stealing with impunity and nobody was ever questioned or arrested. Our values were bastardised. Criminals were celebrated. But change is here. Those who stole our common patrimony are now being made to face the music. It therefore behoves true patriots to rally behind President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration.



Finally, we urge FG to remain focused and consistent in its efforts to clean up the mess in Nigeria and to restore the good name of this great country in the comity of nations. There must be no retreat, no surrender. We charge other judges to emulate Justice Adebukola Banjoko. Judges must sum up enough courage to deal with executive thieves standing trial before them as quickly as possible.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) latest data says that smoking is responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year with many of the deaths occurring prematurely.

According to the report, no fewer that 1.1 billion people are smokers in the world today, the same number as at the turn of the century.

WHO’s ‘Global Report on Trends in Prevalence of Tobacco Smoking 2000-2025’, coincided with World No Tobacco Day 2018 observed every May 31.

The report states: “Tobacco is the only legal drug that kills many of its users when used exactly as intended by manufacturers.

“WHO has estimated that tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) is currently responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year with many of the deaths occurring prematurely.

“This total includes about 600,000 people that are also estimated to die from the effects of second-hand smoking.

“Although often associated with ill-health, disability and death from non-communicable chronic diseases, tobacco smoking is also associated with an increased risk of death from communicable diseases’’.

The global health agency, in the report by health experts, said spreading the message that tobacco caused deadly illnesses such as heart disease and stroke helped prevent “needless” loss of life.

WHO warned that tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke were “major causes” of cardiovascular disease, contributing to three million deaths annually.

It said lack of awareness about the risks of tobacco use was most common in low and middle-income countries.

The report said in China, more than six out of 10 people were unaware that smoking could cause a heart attack while in India and Indonesia, more than half of all adults did not know that the habit could lead to a stroke.

Dr Douglas Bettcher, Director, Department for the Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases at WHO, said tobacco use was falling globally but it still killed more than seven million people a year.

“Progress is uneven in protecting consumers from the tobacco industry,’’ Bettcher said.

He explained that higher income countries were making “faster progress” than their poorer counterparts at protecting consumers, partly owing to stronger regulations.

“In spite of the apparent lack of progress in tackling the total number of smokers, the report highlighted that only one in five people smoked today, compared to more than one in four, 18 years ago.

“The decline was masked by the world’s growing population.’’

On efforts to encourage people to quit, the UN health expert warned that only around 12 per cent countries were on track to meet global targets to reduce by one-third the number of people dying from non-communicable diseases by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.

In a bid to promote a healthy heart, the WHO wanted every one of its 194 Member States to implement a series of increasingly strict tobacco control measures.

These include making indoor public and workplaces smoke-free and insisting that tobacco packaging carries warnings that demonstrate the health risks for users.

“The good news is that these deaths are preventable and we know what needs to be done,’’ Bettcher said.

He named Ireland and Uruguay as countries that had achieved the highest level of tobacco control before, adding that since 2007, the number of people around the world to have benefited from these measures has more than quadrupled, from one billion to five billion. (NAN)

American and Chinese scientists have found that an antimicrobial ingredient commonly used in hand soaps and toothpastes could have adverse effects on colonic inflammation and colon cancer by altering gut microbiota, the microbes found in people’s intestines.

A study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine revealed that short-time treatment with low-dose triclosan led to low-grade colonic inflammation, and exaggerated disease development of colitis and colitis-associated colon cancer in mice.

“These results, for the first time, suggest that triclosan could have adverse effects on gut health,” said Zhang Guodong, assistant professor of food science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the paper’s senior author.

Zhang told Xinhua, “The toothpaste we use can enter into the intestinal tract, then impacting the gut microbiota.”

Triclosan is among the most widely used antimicrobial ingredients and is found in more than 2,000 consumer products and a National Health and Nutrition Examination survey showed that triclosan was detected in about 75 per cent of the urine samples of individuals tested in the U.S. and it is among the top ten pollutants found in U.S. rivers.

“Because this compound is so widely used, our study suggests that there is an urgent need to further evaluate the impact of triclosan exposure on gut health in preparation for the potential establishment of further regulatory policies,” said Yang Caixia, a postdoctoral fellow in Zhang’s laboratory and the paper’s first author.

Zhang’s team and Chinese researchers including those from Xi’an Jiaotong University investigated the effects of triclosan on colonic inflammation and colon cancer using several mouse models.

They reported that in all mouse models tested, triclosan promoted colonic inflammation and colon tumorigenesis.

The research team found that gut microbiota was critical for the observed adverse effects of triclosan, since feeding triclosan to mice reduced the diversity and changed the composition of the gut microbiome.

However, triclosan had no effect in a germ-free mouse model where there is no gut microbiome present, nor in a genetically engineered mouse model where there is no Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), an important mediator for host-microbiota communications.

“This is strong evidence that gut microbiota is required for the biological effects of triclosan,” Zhang said.

This study observed that triclosan altered mouse gut microbiota, increased inflammation, increased the severity of colitis symptoms and spurred colitis-associated colon cancer cell growth.

Also present were former deputy Governor and now Chief of Staff Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, former Deputy Governor, Katsina Sttae Alhaji Ahmad Jikamshi as well as Business tycoon and Chairman Max Airlines Alhaji Dahiru Barau Mangal.

Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu participated in the burial of the deceased at Jega cemetery also paid a condolence visit to family house, during which prayers were offered for the repose of his soul.

Late Garba Kirki Jega is survived by his aged Mother, Hajiya Rakkiya, his wife Halima and twenty-five children among whom is Alhaji Bilya Garba Kirki Jega a businessman.

Speaking to a Kenyan Parent Magazine, Wibroda said that the incident became known after she got an anonymous tip while on a trip to Mombasa.

Wibroda disclosed that she received a call that the househelp was breastfeeding the child to make him stop crying.
When my son, Xolani, was around 8 months old, I had to travel to Mombasa on a work assignment and so I left him under the care of a nanny whom I had trusted so much. While in Mombasa, I received an anonymous call from a person who informed me that my househelp breast fed my son whenever he cried,”

Worse still she found out the maid was HIV positive.

“I took the first flight back to Nairobi. I had to verify the information from my neighbours and in the process, I was informed that my nanny not only breastfeeds my son but was also living with HIV.”
“I didn’t sleep that night and had to rush to the hospital around midnight to have my son tested.
“Fortunately, he was fine. To cut the long story short I fired the nanny the following day. It took immense self-control to restrain myself from harming her,” she said

A very disturbing report reaching 9news Nigeria has it that an unidentified dead body was seen floating in the water in Lagos State, Nigeria.

According to an eyewitness who shared the pictures with our correspondent,
“The dead Body was seen floating in the water in Lagos where the ships are dock. No one has called the authorities to recover the dead body out of fear of the policemen.

The relevant authorities should please check Lagos island and recover the dead body. See photos below.
