Crime › Anambra Man Arrested For Stabbing Relative To Death by NaijaCover(op): 4:01pm On Sep 26, 2025 |
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested one Okwuchukwu Ezimuo, male, aged 45 Years, for stabbing his relative to death over a family land dispute in Umunocha Village, Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect struck the deceased, identified as Joseph Dike, 65 Years Old, on the chest during a quarrel over the land dispute on Monday evening.
Following the incident, the victim was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.
The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the development in a press statement on Wednesday, said the police operatives had visited the scene of the crime, and relevant evidence, including photographs, was taken.
Ikenga said operatives from the Nnobi Police Divisional Headquarters arrested the suspect and he is currently under interrogation.
He said, “The Anambra State Police Command operatives attached to the Nnobi Police Divisional Headquarters have arrested one Okwuchukwu Ezimuo, male, aged 45 years, over the death of his relative on an alleged family land dispute in Awka-Etiti.
“Preliminary information revealed that in the evening of September 22, 2025, the deceased, one Joseph Dike, male, aged 65 Years, collapsed after being struck on the chest by the suspect during a quarrel in Umunocha Village, Awka-Etiti.
“Following the incident, the victim was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.
“The scene of the crime was visited, and relevant evidence, including photographs, was taken.”
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Ikioye Orutugu, urged residents to seek peaceful resolutions to disputes and avoid violence at all times.
The CP further directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for discreet investigation to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
PUNCH Online had reported that the Anambra State Police Command, in February 2025, arrested one Christian Ndu in connection with the fatal stabbing of his elder brother during an altercation.
The incident, described by Orutugu as “tragic” and “unfortunate,” sparked renewed calls for peaceful conflict resolution within communities.
The state PPRO, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was apprehended by police operatives attached to the 3-3 Divisional Headquarters, following a report of the incident. Ikenga outlined the details of the crime, stating, “On February 15, 2025, operatives acted swiftly on a report and arrested Christian Ndubuisi, who allegedly killed his elder brother over a minor disagreement.”
He explained that during the fight, the suspect broke a bottle and used it to stab his brother. Source: https://punchng.com/anambra-man-arrested-for-stabbing-relative-to-death/

Properties › Construction Workers Trapped In Anambra Three-Storey Building Collapse by NaijaCover(op): 3:49pm On Sep 26, 2025 |
A three-storey building with four suspended floors located behind the Anambra State House of Assembly, off Ekwueme Square, Okpuno Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Thursday, collapsed, leaving many in panic.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the building, still under construction and at the roofing stage, suddenly caved in at about 11:40am.
The development threw residents and passers-by into panic as it was feared that some yet-to-be-identified number of occupants, especially construction workers, were trapped in the rubble.
Eyewitnesses near the scene said the structure suddenly caved in without any prior sign, adding that the number of workers and other occupants trapped could not be ascertained yet.
The cause of the collapse and casualty figure had yet to be ascertained, but some officials from the state Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria and the material testing department were already on the ground to ascertain the cause of the collapse, as of the time of writing this report.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the collapse, observed that the area had been sealed as some bystanders and passers-by initiated rescue efforts to see if anyone trapped could be rescued.
It was a chaotic situation at the scene as the rescue efforts were being hampered by a lack of logistics and other necessary equipment like excavators.
One of the eyewitnesses at the scene said, “The building collapsed this morning (Thursday) as some artisans were carrying out some construction works on the roof of the structure.
“The building made some noise as it was collapsing while some construction workers were at the site. No one can say the cause of the collapse for now, but some government officials arrived on the scene shortly after, but rescue efforts have not begun as they said they were waiting for the excavators to arrive.”
The Chairman, COREN-ERM Anambra State, Sir Victor Meju, said, “It is a three-storey building with four suspended floors still under construction at its roofing stage. It is a private building. It was gathered that the structure was roofed last Thursday.
“An on-site preliminary investigation revealed that it was a vertically complete collapse to the rubble. On-site preliminary investigation also revealed that the collapse occurred as a result of the poor concrete mixture and a likely foundation problem.
“The relevant agencies, such as the Ministry of Housing and the Awka Capital Territory Development Association, have been notified, and they are on the ground to monitor and offer rescue operations.”
When contacted on the development, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said he was not aware, but promised to make enquiries and get back.
However, the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority confirmed the development, but insisted no one was trapped and that no life was lost in the incident.
The Head of the Media Unit of the association, Ukpa Ewa, in a press statement issued, said, “While preliminary checks are ongoing, our officers on the ground have so far found no evidence to suggest that anyone was trapped.
“We urge the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information, as such actions create unnecessary panic and undermine public confidence.
“ACTDA remains committed to enforcing strict compliance with building standards and will continue to monitor developments within the Awka Capital Territory.” Source: https://punchng.com/construction-workers-trapped-in-anambra-three-storey-building-collapse/

Crime › Man Stabs Grandparents To Death Over Food Dispute by NaijaCover(op): 3:41pm On Sep 26, 2025 |
A 30-Year-Old Man, Mutawakilu Ibrahim, has been arrested by the Kano State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his grandparents to death during a heated argument over food at their residence in Kofar Dawanau Quarters, Dala Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the incident occurred on Thursday morning, around 9:30 am, and was promptly reported at the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters.
The suspect, believed to be under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the attack, allegedly used a knife to inflict multiple stab wounds on his grandfather, Muhammad Dansokoto, 75, and grandmother, Hadiza Tasidi, 65, following a disagreement over food.
The victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where medical personnel confirmed them dead on arrival.
Their bodies were examined and subsequently released to family members for burial in line with Islamic rites.
In response to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for a discreet investigation.
“The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” the police spokesperson added.
Kano State, Nigeria’s most populous state, has witnessed an increase in reported cases of violent crimes within family settings in recent years.
Security experts and community leaders have often linked such incidents to drug abuse, mental health challenges, and rising economic hardship, which put pressure on family relationships.
The use of illicit substances, particularly among youths and young adults in Kano, has been a recurring concern.
Authorities and civil society groups have repeatedly warned that drug abuse often fuels violent behaviour and domestic disputes, sometimes leading to fatal outcomes. Source: https://punchng.com/man-stabs-grandparents-to-death-over-food-dispute/

Crime › Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya Shot Dead In Enugu by NaijaCover(op): 8:55pm On Sep 20, 2025 |
There is palpable tension in Enugu State following the gruesome murder of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
The incident occurred on Friday evening along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area.
Fr. Eya, until his death, was the parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu.
Initial reports had suggested that the assailants were kidnappers who attacked the cleric while he was travelling.
A viral post on social media claimed that he was killed instantly after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, while some passengers were abducted.
However, sources in the community told newsmen on Saturday morning that the killing appeared to be a targeted assassination.
According to one source, the priest was driving alone when the attackers, who rode on motorbikes, intercepted him near the site of the ongoing Type C hospital project.
“They shot and deflated his tyres, forcing the vehicle to stop. They then approached and shot him multiple times at close range. This does not look like a kidnapping situation,” the source stated.
The late priest hailed from Ugbaike, in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state.
Confirming the tragic development, the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
“Shocked to the marrow, it is with crushing pain and sorrow, yet with total submission to the will of the Almighty God and firm hope in the resurrection of the dead, that I inform you of the tragic death of yet another brother of ours, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya.
“He was shot dead yesterday, 19 September 2025, along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu Road. Let us remain ardent in prayer that God sees us through this period of devastating anguish. May his soul rest in peace. Amen,” the statement reads. Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/thenationonlineng.net/tension-as-gunmen-murder-catholic-priest-in-enugu/amp/
