A Hunting expedition ended in tragedy as a hunter, Sunday Ijiola, was allegedly shot dead by a colleague, Atanda Agbobiado, in a forest at Pakoyi, via Owode Ketu, Yewa North Area of Ogun.

Our correspondent learnt that the incident happened on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, when roughly fifteen hunters ventured into the forest to hunt. It was further gathered that the hunters separated themselves to keep a prey from escaping.

According to a PUNCH Metro Police source that our correspondent spoke with on Sunday, the deceased, 43, was said to have been mistaken for the beer they were pursuing in the forest.

The cop said, “It was said that a group of hunters from Owode-Apesin village, consisting of about 15 people, went to the forest to go about their hunting activities, and then saw a big deer in the forest.

They decided to make it their target and noticed it was gradually disappearing from their view, so they decided to strategically hunt it by double-crossing the fleeing animal.”

The culprit, Agbobiado, shot at the prey while they were pursuing it. His colleagues reportedly raced excitedly to the target but were startled to see that the victim was the one who had been shot.

However, the victim was said to have passed away while being transported to a hospital for medical attention.

Upon realising that the victim had passed away, the suspect was said to have bolted. The grieving family were said to have approached the Eggua Police Division to report the event.

The spokesperson for the Ogun Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and disclosed that an investigation into the death of the hunter had commenced.

She said, “We are currently investigating the scene of the crime, as our operatives have visited there and also taken photographs of the corpse. Efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect.

“The father of the victim has requested that an autopsy be conducted and also requested that the body of the victim be released to him in line with the traditional rites. The case file with parties will be transferred to the state criminal investigation department for further investigation.”

PUNCH Metro reported a similar occurrence on May 2, 2023, when fellow hunters unintentionally shot and killed a colleague as they were hunting in a scrub in the state’s Odeda district on April 20.

The incident, it was learnt, threw the Egba Hunters Association, a group the deceased belonged to, into confusion.

“I am aware of the matter. All of them are hunters. One of them shot at an animal, and the bullet hit one of their members. They reported the matter at the Odeda Police Station. We investigated and discovered that it was a case of an accidental discharge.

“The family of the dead man said they would not press charges since it was not a case of intentional killing. But we did our work properly and are still on the matter. As we speak, an investigation into the matter is ongoing,” a former state police public relations officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has revoked the banking licence of Heritage Bank Plc, effective immediately.

This decision was made due to the bank’s failure to improve its financial performance, posing a threat to financial stability.

The apex bank’s Acting Director of Corporate Communication Department, Sidi Ali, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

According to the CBN, the bank’s management has been unable to stem the decline despite various supervisory steps taken by the regulator. With no reasonable prospects of recovery, the CBN has taken this action to protect the financial system and maintain public confidence.

“The Nigerian financial system remains on a solid footing.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and soundness of our financial system, and this action reflects that commitment,” the statement added.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has been appointed as the liquidator of Heritage Bank, following the Banks and Other Financial Act 2020.

This move is seen as a significant step by the CBN to maintain the stability of the financial system and protect depositors’ funds. The public has been assured that the revocation of Heritage Bank’s license will not impact the overall health of the financial system.

The statement read, “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), following its mandate to promote a sound financial system in Nigeria and exercise of its powers under Section 12 of the Banks and Other Financial Act (BOFIA) 2020, hereby revokes the licence of Heritage Bank Plc with immediate effect.

This action has become necessary due to the bank’s breach of Section 12 (1) of BOFIA, 2020. The Board and Management of the bank have not been able to improve the bank’s financial performance, a situation which constitutes a threat to financial
stability.

“This follows a period during which the CBN engaged with the bank and prescribed various supervisory steps intended to stem the decline. Regrettably, the bank has continued to suffer and has no reasonable prospects of recovery, thereby making the revocation of the license the next necessary step.

“Consequently, the CBN has taken this action to strengthen public confidence in the banking system and ensure that the soundness of our financial system is not impaired.

“The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is hereby appointed as the liquidator of the bank under Section 12 (2) of BOFIA, 2020.

“We wish to assure the public that the Nigerian financial system remains on a solid footing. The action we are taking today reflects our continued commitment to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and soundness of our financial system.”

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam has ordered an immediate investigation into the lifeless body of a baby found in a sack at a refuse dump along Ifite Road, Awka, the state’s capital on Sunday, June 2.

Preliminary investigations revealed the child, probably a day old, was abandoned by a yet to be identified woman suspected to be the mother. Meanwhile, the body has been recovered and the Police are currently working with some eyewitness information at the scene for possible arrest of the perpetrator.

Confirming the development to newsmen, the spokesperson of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the CP decries moral decay in Society and describes the act as ungodly, barbaric, and inhuman. He also urges Parents/Guardians to pay greater attention to children/wards and call on anyone with useful information that can aid the investigation to come forward to the Police Command headquarters in this regard.

He added that anyone that has an intel into the incident should call the Command Control Room number at 07039194332 or the PPRO at 08039334002 and that confidentiality of information is guaranteed.
