Update From . COM A Bauchi State Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 32-year-old man, Auwal Usman, for using a machete to cut off the two hands of his friend in the state. The Presiding Judge, Haruna Mamma, found Usman guilty of cutting his friend’s hands with a machete during a physical fight. The police prosecutor, Yusuf Musa, told the court that the suspect, a resident of Dogon Ruwa village in Ari, in the Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, had a misunderstanding with Sabo Abduwa which resulted in a fight. Musa added that during the fight, the convict brought out a machete and cut the two hands of his friend. While one hand fell down, the remaining one was left hanging. Musa added, “Abduwa was rushed to the Ningi General Hospital for medical attention where the remaining hand was amputated to save his life because of the serious injuries he sustained as a result of the deep cut. This is contrary to Section 241 of the penal code.” When the charges were read to the suspect, he admitted to committing them but pleaded for leniency from the court because he was a first offender. Delivering his judgment, Mamman said the court was convinced that the victim lost his two hands as a result of the heinous act of the suspect which would render him disabled for life. Mamman, therefore, sentenced him to two years in a correctional centre without an option of fine for causing grievous hurt contrary to Section 241 of the Penal Code. He also ordered him to pay the victim the sum of N150,000 for his medical expenses. Source: https://punchng.com/man-cuts-off-friends-hands-during-fight-in-bauchi/

Business › Banks Raise ATM Cash Withdrawal Limit To ₦200,000 by NaijaCover(op): 5:48am On Jul 06, 2023 |
Months after banks restricted withdrawals on automated teller machines (ATMs), commercial banks in the country are beginning to increase the maximum amount of cash customers can withdraw on a daily basis to N200,000, LEADERSHIP has learnt.
In an emailed notice to customers yesterday, Zenith Bank said customers can now ‘perform cash withdrawals of up to N200,000 per day’ at its ATM terminals across the country.
This, it said, is irrespective of the bank that issued the card.
The bank, however, stated that the N500,000 weekly cashless policy withdrawal limit for individuals still stands.
There are insinuations that other banks in the country may follow this path, by allowing their customers to withdraw, through ATM terminals, large amounts in the region of N200,000, even though they have not made it public.
Before now, most banks had put a limit of N20,000 daily withdrawal on their ATM terminals mainly for cards issued by other banks. The limit had been put in place during the naira redesign policy.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had, last December, limited weekly cash withdrawals over the counter to N100,000 for individuals and N500,000 for organisations. It also set daily cash withdrawals at point of sale (POS) and ATM terminals at N20,000 per day, with the directive taking effect from January 9, 2023.
Customers had resorted to seeking out their bank ATMs where they could make more withdrawals, or making cash withdrawals over the counter.
A circular issued by the apex bank during the period stated that “the maximum cash withdrawal per week via ATM shall be N100,000 subject to a maximum of N20,000 cash withdrawal per day.
“Only denominations of N200 and below shall be loaded into the ATMs. The maximum cash withdrawal via point of sale (POS) terminal shall be N20,000 daily.”
The limits on POS as well as denomination part of the statement have, however, not held ground as cash withdrawals limit through POS has since been in excess of N20,000 while all ATMs are dispensing only N1,000 and N500 notes. Crime › Man Arraigned For Allegedly Sodomising 14-Year-Old Boy In Adamawa by NaijaCover(op): 5:10am On Jul 06, 2023 |
A 45-year-old man in Adamawa State, Sani Salihu, has been arraigned in court in the capital, Yola, for allegedly having forced anal sex with a 14-year-old boy.
The Chief Magistrate Court I, presided over by Magistrate Alheri Ishaku Salihu, heard that Salihu of Jippu Jam in Yola South Local Government Area lured the boy into a nearby bush, threatened him with a pair of scissors, and abused him sexually.
Arraigning the defendant, the police prosecutor, Inspector Zakka Musa, alleged that Salihu, said to be a business man, penetrated the boy through the anus on the 24th June, 2023, after brandishing the scissors which he threatened to use if he refused.
According to the police, the boy’s father, a resident of Modire Ward of Yolde Pate, in Yola South LGA, reported the matter to the on June 27, 2023.
The defendant, who was arraigned before the court for ‘unnatural offence’, contrary to Section 263 of the penal code, pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence.
The Magistrate adjourned the case to 20th July, 2023, for further mention, and asked that the defendant be remanded.
The order followed an application by the prosecutor to enable him duplicate the case file and transmit it to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
In a related development, the Magistrate Court has sumarrily convicted and sentenced Sani Salihu to two years imprisonment for a different offence.
He was handed the jail term and given option of a N100,000 fine after he was convicted for the offence of resistance to his lawful arrest over his initial alleged offence.
He was accused of attempting to escape while being taken to Yolde Pate Correctional Centre by Inspector Ahmed Mohammed of the CID on July 3, 2023, when he was first arraigned in court.
Inspector Zakka Musa told the court that the convict jumped out of the tricycle in which he was being conveyed at Yolde Pate and attempted to escape but he was re-arrested by the officer after a long pursuit.
