A member of the security team at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Oriyomi Fatai, was found dead in his apartment on Anigilaje Street, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, PUNCH Metro learnt on Sunday.

Our correspondent learnt that Fatai might have died from a fall, as his body was discovered in the apartment around 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Residents in the area where the body was found, noticed a foul odour coming from the apartment, prompting them to report it to a nearby police division.

While the police investigative team quickly responded and forced open the apartment’s door, PUNCH Metro learnt that Fatai’s lifeless body was found swollen, lying on the floor of the apartment.

The state command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, told our correspondent on Sunday that the crime scene assessment suggested the deceased might have fallen from a couch due to intoxication, as remnants of the alcohol he had consumed were found on the table.

Odutola said, “Residents noticed an unpleasant odour coming from the apartment of a co-tenant named Oriyomi Fatai. Our officers were dispatched to the scene, and upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless, swollen body of the deceased in the room.

“The position in which he was found suggested that he might have fallen from the couch and hit his head on the ground due to suspected intoxication. Remnants of dry gin were found on the table. We also learnt that the deceased was a Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, staff member.

“The deceased’s family was notified, and they requested the return of Fatai’s body for burial, as no signs of foul play were found.”

PUNCH Metro reports that a woman named Toyin Balogun tragically lost her life under similar circumstances on Saturday. The 26-year-old was discovered in her apartment in the Gbokoniyi area of Abeokuta, struggling for breath.

Our correspondent learnt that a neighbour forcibly opened Balogun’s apartment after the deceased failed to respond to their calls when they needed to collect a key belonging to another neighbour.

The police stated that she was found with foam in her mouth, rushed to the hospital, and later confirmed dead.

A fire incident killed six family members in the early hours of Monday in Ede, Osun State. The victims were identified as a Customs officer, Tijani Kabiru, attached to the Oyo/Osun Command, his wife, and four children.

The fire reportedly started around 2 am at the family’s residence in the Olowopoku area of Ede.

It was gathered that Kabiru, who was in his late 40s, was asleep alongside his wife and five children when the fire, believed to have originated from the solar panel installed on the roof of the house, engulfed the building.

“The fire started around 2:09 am from the roof of the house. An electric spark from the solar panel attached to the roof caused the fire.

“One of the children, a 13-year-old, was reading when the fire started. He ran to his father’s room and realised that his father and other family members were weak due to the emission of smoke. He ran out of the house to call for help. It was difficult for residents of the house to access the house due to the security of the house, like electric barbed wires and strong doors, among others.

“We informed the Fire Service men around 3:10 am. But before they arrived at the scene, Tijani, his wife, and four children were burnt to death,” a source disclosed.

The Public Relations Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Dekunle Ibraheem, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

“It is true that one Tijani, a Customs officer, his wife and four children were burnt to death. Only one of them escaped the scene. Their bodies were handed over to the men of A Division of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.

A man identified as Fatai Hamzat has been found dead in his apartment on Oremeji Street, Ijeun Tuntun, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The Ogun State Police Command informed PUNCH Online on Saturday that Hamzat’s body was discovered around 7am on Friday.

“I had just returned from church when I noticed Azeez’s motorcycle parked in the compound. I went to check on him, but his door was locked from the inside,” one neighbour reportedly told the police, as revealed in a wireless message obtained by PUNCH Online on Saturday.

After repeated knocking with no response from Hamzat, our correspondent learnt that neighbours, including one Ogunsola, forced open a window.

Inside the apartment, they allegedly found Hamzat’s body hanging from a rope tied to the ceiling fan.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the body was taken to a nearby hospital morgue for an autopsy.

“The deceased was found hanging in his apartment after several attempts to reach him failed. An investigation into the incident is ongoing,” Odutola said on Saturday.

A man named Dada Adesonye died in a similar circumstance after hanging himself from a tree in the Afami area of Imasayi, Yewa North Local Government Area, on October 18, 2024.

The Police said the victim’s body was found by a worker in the area in the early hours of October 18, 2024.

Similarly, on August 29, 2024, 32-year-old Olúwaṣeun Shorinola was found dead by his wife in their apartment in the Kémta area of Abeokuta.

His body was reportedly hanging from a wall.

PUNCH Online reports that these incidents have raised concerns about the rising number of suicides in the state.
