Politics / Is Nigeria Politics A Game Of Number Or Decided By The Supreme Court by nairalandfreak(m): 12:14am On Feb 16, 2020
There is a popular saying that politics is a game of number, but the situations in the political setting this days have been the other way round with the Supreme Court sacking governor-elect in Bayelsa State and sacking the governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha due to alleged manipulation of the electoral process.

The case of Osun State caught the attention of many Nigerians after the Tribunal had declared the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ademola Adeleke, only for the apex court to declare the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gboyega Oyetola as the winner.

Sometimes electorate vote for a candidate of their choice only for the supreme court to nullify the victory due to some manipulations or issues.

Nairaland / General / In South Africa, Homosexual Student Wins A Beauty Contest by nairalandfreak(m): 8:39am On Aug 16, 2019

A student from North-West University (NWU) in Mahikeng, South Africa, Hope Nokuthula Bhuda, was elected … “Mr NWU 2019”. This triggered a lively controversy on social networks.
As every year, the contest of “NWU Mr and Miss 2019” took place on the Mahikeng campus of the North-West University (NWU), in the northwest of South Africa, on 10 August 2019. This year, the competition focused on themes of sexuality and gender. The school management had also launched a call for applications from students, with the hashtag … #BreakTheCode . The code was indeed broken …

The posters of the competition asked in particular: “Are you a member of the LGBTI + family?” . And more curiously: “Are you a human being?” …
“Young king, the crown is yours”
As for Mr NWU, it is Hope Nokuthula Bhuda , who declares herself a lesbian, who was finally elected. After the announcement of the results, she wrote on her Facebook page: “Young king, the crown is yours, you have been chosen!”

Controversy

His victory sparked a lively debate online. On Twitter, many also declared their support for the student for the courage she showed.

NWU wants to make the public more tolerant, university spokesman Louis Jacobs told Sowetan , a South African online daily newspaper. “Gender and sexuality awareness is an essential part of the NWU’s policy (…) and we respect the right of our staff and students to express themselves in the way that suits them. the best, “ he explained .

“Management has taken note of the issues raised by some stakeholders at Mr NWU’s coronation (…) and is awaiting a report from the organizers of the event,” the spokesman said.

Politics / DSS Set To Release El-zakzaky And Wife by nairalandfreak(m): 8:26pm On Aug 05, 2019
The leader of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife  Zeenat might breathe the air of freedom very soon as the Department of State Services (DSS), is already working to ensure his release from detention.

Naija News had earlier reported today that Justice Darius Khobo of Kaduna state High Court gave El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat leave to travel to India for medical attention. He, however, added that the trip will be under the supervision of the state.

A statement signed by the DSS Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya  and made available to Naija News reads:

"This is to inform the public that the Department of State Services (DSS) has received the order granting Ibrahim EL-ZAKZAKY leave to travel to India for medical treatment. Consequently, the Service is liaising with relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance. Conformity with the order is in line with the Service’s avowed commitment to the Rule of Law inherent in a democracy."

Naija News reports Zakzaky had been in custody since 2015 when he was arrested after he and his followers blocked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai in Kaduna State.

Nairaland / General / Dasuki To Boycott Trial Over Fg's Disobedience To Court Order by nairalandfreak(m): 3:27pm On Nov 13, 2018

… Calls for an end to hypocrisy and partisan rule of law.

The former National Security Adviser Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) has berated the Federal Government over his continued detention and disobedience to various court orders that admitted him on bails.

Dasuki in a strongly worded letter he personally signed and addressed to the Registrar of the Federal High Court Abuja vowed to boycott any proceeding for his trial since the federal government has proved beyond reasonable doubt that it would not obey any order of the court even if it is in his favour.

Dasuki had previously perfected bails granted him by five different judges of high courts including Justices Ademola Adeniyi, Justice Ahmed Mohammed and Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Abuja Federal High Court and Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf and Justice Peter Affen of the FCT High Courts. The ECOWAS Court of Justice also ordered his immediate release from detention.

In the letter dated November 12, 2018, the Ex-NSA recalled several court judgements which ordered his release from detention since December 2015 which were not obeyed and other decisions that admitted him to bail and which were also refused by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the letter, Dasuki said: “Prevailing circumstances have prompted me to write this letter to the court, the hope of every Nigerian citizens. Unfortunately, it seems to me that the current administration has so much interference with the judicial system, such that it has become practically impossible for the Court to maintain her independence, the administration of justice. My plight is of common Knowledge.”

Recalling how Buhari’s government refused to obey several court orders, Dasuki said he had to approach another court for the enforcement of his fundamental human right.

Dasuki said: “After the Federal Government failed to comply with all the bail orders and judgement of the ECOWAS court, I further approached the Federal High Court for the enforcement of my fundamental human right. In a judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu on July 2, 2018, the court found that my right had been breached and accordingly ordered my release from detention. The conditions whereof the court admitted me to bail have been met, but I have still not been released from custody.

“I am very much apprehensive about the President’s (Buhari) statement, in that my rights will continually be violated and that no order for my release will be honoured by the Federal Government of Nigeria or any of its agencies.

“In reaction to my the judgement of the court enforcing my fundamental human right, an embarrassing statement was credited to Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN, the current Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on 13 July 2018 after the bail conditions have been met, including the deposit of N1,000,000 with the Registrar of the Federal High Court, stated that irrespective of the judgment directing the said release, the Federal Government would not comply

“At this juncture, it will seem that the Nigerian Government is not inclined to yield or obey the orders of any Court of Law; whether domestic or international. Ironically, the Federal Government still wants to ride on judicial wings to prosecute me, when it does not comply with Orders that proceed from the Court, especially in relation to me

“At this point, I strongly believe that there must be an end to this hypocrisy and lopsided/ partisan rule of law.

Since the Federal Government has resolved not to comply with judicial Orders directing my release, it is better for the Court to also absolve me of the need to submit myself for further prosecution. Justice should be evenly dispensed, as opposed to same, being in favour of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

However, at the resume trial today before Justice Ahmed Rahmat Mohammed, the counsel to Federal Government Chief Dipo Opeseyi told the court that Dasuki had deliberately refused to come to court because of his anger on certain steps taking by the government against him.

In his own reaction, Justice Muhammad directed the prosecution to always depose to an affidavit of evidence whenever the former NSA declined to come to court.

The Judge who said he had not received Dasuki’s letter formally however adjourned further trial till November 19, 2019.

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday accepted the resignation of the Hon. Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun. The President thanked the Minister for her services to the nation and wished her well in her future pursuits.

In a statement signed by Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity and made available to Naija News President also approved that the Minister of State Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, should oversee the Ministry of Finance with effect from today.

Below is the full text of Mrs Adeosun’s resignation letter.
14th September, 2018

His Excellency

Muhammadu Buhari

President, Federal Republic of Nigeria

State House

Aso Villa

Abuja

Dear Excellency,

Let me commence by thanking you profusely for the honour and privilege of serving under your inspirational leadership. It has been a truly rewarding experience to learn from you and to observe at close quarters your integrity and sense of duty.

I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign.

Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport. I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.

On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine. Indeed, I presented that certificate at the 2011 Ogun State House of Assembly and in 2015 for Directorate of State Services (DSS) Clearance as well as to the National Assembly for screening. Be that as it may, as someone totally committed to a culture of probity and accountability I have decided to resign with effect from Friday, 14th September, 2018.

Your Excellency, It has been an exceptional privilege to have served our nation under your leadership and to have played a role in steering our economy at a very challenging time. I am proud that Nigeria has brought discipline into its finances, has identified and is pursuing a path to long term sustainable growth that will unlock the potential in this great economy. Under your leadership, Nigeria was able to exit recession and has now started to lay the foundations for lasting growth and wealth creation. Repositioning this huge economy is not a short term task and there are no short cuts, indeed there are tough decisions still to be made but I have no doubt that your focus on infrastructural investment, revenue mobilisation and value for money in public expenditure will deliver growth, wealth and opportunity for all Nigerians.

I thank His Excellency, the Vice President and my colleagues in the Federal Executive Council for the huge pleasure and honour of working with them. I also thank most specially, the team in the ‘Finance Family’ of advisers and heads of agencies under the Ministry of Finance. Your Excellency, this group of committed Nigerians represent a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and ages. They have worked well above and beyond the call of duty to support me in the tasks assigned. The diversity in my team and their ability to work cohesively to deliver reforms, convinces me that Nigeria has the human capital required to succeed.

Your Excellency, let me conclude by commending your patience and support, during the long search for the truth in this matter. I thank you again for giving me the honour of serving under your leadership, it is a rare privilege, which I do not take for granted. As a Nigerian and committed progressive, I appreciate you for your dogged commitment to improving this nation.

Please be assured, as always, of my highest regards and best wishes

Kemi Adeosun (Mrs)
