Travel / Scotland MP Kicks Against Uk’s New Visa Policy For International Students by Nanorest: 2:41pm On May 25, 2023 |
Carol Monaghan, a Member of Parliament (MP), has kicked against the new visa policy for international students announced by the United Kingdom’s government. Ms Monaghan from Glasgow North West, who spoke at the parliament, said international students make valuable contributions, especially to the UK’s economy. “The (UK) government’s new policy on international students visas is misjudged,” the Scottish National Party politician said on Wednesday. She added that Scotland would have to suffer the consequences of what she described as a ‘misjudged’ policy of the government. According to her, international students enriched the UK’s society in all sectors, including health, IT and universities. On Tuesday, the UK government slammed a restriction on student visa routes in a bid to cut net migration. The latest policy restricts international students, including those from Nigeria, from bringing family members on all but postgraduate research routes. Specifically, the government banned people from using a student visa as a backdoor route to work in the UK, while noting that net migration was over 500,000 from June 2021 to June 2022. A statement issued by the Secretary of State for Home Department Suella Braverman, stated that half a million student visas were issued while the number of dependents of overseas students has increased by 750% since 2019 to 136,000 people. Mr Braverman added that the new reforms would come into effect for students starting in January 2024 with severe restrictions around dependents. “The government will however work with the higher education sector to explore alternative options to ensure the brightest and best students can continue to bring dependents when they study at the UK’s world-leading universities,” he added. Figures revealed that overseas students contribute more than £4 billion to the Scottish economy, representing benefits worth thousands of pounds for residents. |

Politics / Profile Of Adams Oshiomhole! Edo State Senator Elect. by Nanorest: 5:36pm On Mar 23, 2023 |
Adams Oshiomhole is a famous Nigerian politician and former Governor of Edo State who is reckoned with amongst Nigerians for his various acts of bravery and determination Despite his popularity, the majority are still unaware of many nitty-gritty things about this veteran Nigerian politician. In this article, you will find everything you need to know about Adams Oshiomhole- his biography, cars, net worth, houses and political career. Adams Oshiomhole is the son of Aishetu Oshiomhole, his mother, who gave birth to him on 4th April 1952. The 69-year-old was born and raised in Iyamho, Auchi, Edo State. Many details aren’t known about his father, however, Adams Oshiomhole was raised in a Muslim home. He got converted to Christianity, courtesy of his first wife, Clara who died in 2010 due to breast cancer. He is a catholic, and his Christian name is Eric. Adams Oshiomhole attended primary and secondary schools in Edo State for his early education. Choosing to proceed further, he travelled to the United Kingdom in 1975 where he majored in economics and industrial relations at Ruskin College, Oxford. Being a bright student, Adams Oshiomhole graduated as the best International student. As if that was not enough, Adams Oshiomhole took his education a notch higher by attending the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru and the Kennedy School of Government of Howard University. Career as a Labour leader: When he finished his secondary school education, Adams Oshiomhole was elected as a Unit Secretary at Arewa Textiles Company, where he worked. His insatiable desire for labour rights and justice was born during his tenure at Arewa Textiles Company. Young Oshiomhole witnessed how workers were poorly paid and how disciplinarian actions were unjust. In 1971, an unplanned hullabaloo gave him the opportunity to prove his capability as a union leader and he was elected the trade union organizer in 1975. Following his international studies in the UK, Adams Oshiomhole returned to Nigeria where he was appointed as the General Secretary of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, a union with over 75,000 workers. The Union experienced remarkable progress and achievements under his leadership. During his tenure, the union acquired investments in real estate and even had cash reserves the government and people were happy with. Following his noteworthy as a General Secretary, Adams Oshiomole soon became the Deputy President of the National Labour Congress (NLC) in 1988. However, his activities were soon suspended because the military government dissolved the NLC in 1995, but was revived again in 1999 under democracy. Adams Oshiomhole became the President of the newly revived NLC. He achieved various outstanding feats during his tenure as a Labour leader. For instance, he negotiated a 25% wage increase for public sector workers. He also led a massive and effective Nationwide strike during the pump fuel prices. Political Career: Seeking to make a further impact in government and leadership, Adams Oshiomhole decided to join politics and run for the Governor of Edo State. He succeeded in this feat gallantly. He ran for two terms of office as the Governor of Edo State from 2008-to 2016. In 2018, he became All Progressive Congress’ national chairman following a voice vote by delegates at the party national convention. However, he was suspended from APC in 2019. AWARDS: Best Tailor Award In 1986 Man of the Year, by Silverbird in 2008. Award of Recognition, by The Social Enterprise Reports and Awards (SERAs) in 2011. Best Governors of Edo State during Edo Day Celebration in 2015. Governor of the Year, by Vanguard Personality of the Year in 2015. Honorary Doctorate from Samuel Adegboyega University in 2016. Networth: Adams Oshiomhole’s net worth has not been disclosed publicly. However, having served as the governor for 8 years plus as a labour and party leader, his net worth must run into billions of naira. His net worth is estimated at $200 million (100B NGN). Politics / Labour Party Candidate In Edo State Resigns From Party. by Nanorest: 9:17pm On Mar 21, 2023 |
Three days after the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the results into the Edo State House of Assembly which showed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leading the pack with 12 seats out of the 24-member house followed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) with eight seats while the Labour Party (LP) has won one seat and election into three seats inconclusive. Meanwhile the LP candidate for Ovia North East constituency, Victor Nosa Omoregie has resigned his membership of the party alleging that he was seen as a mole for the PDP by members of the party. In a press statement he personally signed, Omoregie said he was comfortable with the outcome of the election which he said has curtailed the APC from its intention of taking over the state house of assembly. He said “I contested the election under the ticket of Labour Party but was never genuinely accepted into the party as I was regarded as a mole and agent working for PDP. This damaging assertion went viral in the social media. The Labour Party leadership from top to the bottom worked hard to demean my person to the extent of creating identity confusion leading to the mix up in the name of my constituency and constituency 2 candidature. “As it stands, as far as I am concerned, the Labour Party in Edo State today is not what the masses expect it to be. Perhaps, the presence of the “Obidient” factor attempted to give life to it but without success for now. “I cannot under any circumstance wish to continue to identify myself with the party particularly with the present crop of party leadership who appear to understand little or nothing about political management. “In the light of the above, I forthwith severe myself from Labour Party and consolidate my membership of PDP which is my family party. “I must say that I am satisfied with the outcome of the election because it has succeeded in curtailing the attempt by APC to control the Edo State House of Assembly with conceived evil intentions aimed at destabilizing the State.” A press statement by the Head of Department, Voter Education/Publicity, Timidi Wariowei showed that the PDP won in Akoko-Edo I and Akoko-Edo II. Other constituencies won by the party are Esan Central, Esan North East II, Esan South East, Igueben, Ikpoba-Okha, Orhionmwon II, Ovia North East I, Ovia North East II, Owan West and Uhunmwonde while the APC won in Esan North East I, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, Etsako West I, Etsako West II, Orhionmwon I, and Owan East. The LP won in Oredo West constituency while Oredo East, Egor and Ovia South West constituencies were declared inconclusive. |

This should remind the east that they need to be in good terms with other regions because in a contest between just Kano state and the five eastern states, going by tribal cards, Kano will win the election. In all, total votes all parties got from south east does not exceed 2million even when everyone decided to vote as against the over 3million votes from the west even when majority didn't bother to vote 2 Likes 1 Share |
