Greatihex: I wonder where you guys are seeing gueye man marking hazard. The person i see doing that is Gana.
At last, hazard was able to give him a yellow card and won the free kick that brought the second goal. If he didn't give Gana a yellow today, i would have said that he succeeded.
And Klopp said, "ask pep, he will say the same thing". Hehehe. Gueye and Gana are the same person. His real name is Idrissa Gueye. |

Nihilist: What I'm saying is not contradicting your posts. In fact it complements it. What I've been saying is this- it might not be enough to abstain from Gambling, your impulses might manifest in a different form - it could be drugs, it could be booze, it could be women.
I think that it's important continue to monitor ourselves and look out for behaviour and thought processes that lead to habit forming behaviour, that could crystallize into an addiction...for example, even something as benign as Nairalanding could be a serious addiction if left to spiral out of control. Good Point! |

Nihilist: My wife is an assistant psychologist with G4S. These are the kind of people she deals with on a daily basis, especially within the criminal justice system. The concept of Know Thyself us at the heart of CBT.
That's exactly what they teach at AA or Gambling Anonymous meetings.
You need to know yourself and know your triggers and your limits first, before you can be free of addiction.
Otherwise you might abstain from Gambling but the same impulses will lead to you get addicted to even mojo. I would have thought the 'know thyself' you referred to earlier was related to 'knowing limits'; meaning, have a bet but know when to stop. This to me is all the wrong advice for addictive personalities. On the other hand, I feel the 'know thyself' taught at AA will be related to complete abstinence; meaning 'know that you are an addictive person and abstain completely'. This is what Ibime and I are talking about. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by nateevs(m): 1:12pm On Apr 30, 2017 |
Nihilist: Addictive personality does not show on the face, so how do you know for sure that these people are actually 'stable' in the first place?
Forex and many other forms of Trading are actually forms of betting in practice, the only difference is that the risk management strategy is decided at organisational level rather than individual level at hedge funds.
Individual traders are no really no different to bettors. You generally do your research, then you take a position and back it with your funds. You already know there is a risk of losing your money, but you have a strategy to mitigate your risk by either sticking to low risk, low returns trades/bets, or reducing the amount of money you are willing to spend.
Addictive personalities will often forgo the research bits and make moves based on hunches or gut feeling. These are the people that throw logic out of the window during their thought process. It won't show on the face bro.
That's why all man must know himself before they start any new ventures.
For every Greg Coffey, there's a Kweku Adoboli. Know thyself. I think this is theoretical observation. Practically speaking, have you ever met an addictive personality with self control? Or an addictive personality who knows thyself? |

Ibime: That may be the case but gambling is slightly different.
When you start believing your smarter than the average Joe, you will feel your punts are based on research and knowledge rather than addiction. You will see arguments even on this thread saying they use smart methods in their betting, others don't know how to punt, they are not using sense etc.
I have seen otherwise stable people blow money on stock trading in the same way. No addictive personality, just believing they have better research or better quants. Exactly. I have seen otherwise stable people blow money on the Forex Trading. I don't do the 'know thyself' preach. I am more of a 'understand why you are doing it' kinda guy. Like you said, when one's reasons are trending towards desperation, and the insatiable need to win, then the addiction may just have crept in. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by nateevs(m): 11:52am On Apr 30, 2017 |
Ibime: I know this from experience of loved ones, not myself. I would rather become an alcoholic than a gambler.
One of my good friends and football colleague called Kwame got into it. He was a smart boy right from college. We used to call him Calculus. 2004 UCL final, I accompanied him to bookies to place a £2 bet on Monaco v Porto, not knowing this is becoming a serious problem to him. To cut a long story short, I spent the next few years fielding phonecalls from his baby mama on how he is a degenerate dad, he steals money meant for the kids etc etc, and of course he dropped out of uni. Unfortunately for the babymama, she even went and got pregnant a 2nd time when it was already established that he is a degenerate. One day in 2007, we were on our way to play football on Saturday morning, we are already late for the match, he insisted he must stop and place bet. The niggas body was shaking like an addict. His brain was so consumed with the bet (or the shame that he couldn't even hide his addiction from me), he left the money in the ATM. I took the money from the ATM after he had walked away and gave him. It was £20. He walked into the bookies and bet it all. Cut a long story short, I stopped seeing Kwame around 2008, his life had turned into a sorry mess, a vagrant who was getting kicked out from house to house because of his problem. 2 years ago, I learnt his desperation drove him to become a drug mule, trying to fly with cocaine from Ghana to London. Needless to say, they caught him and slapped him with 6 years at her Majesty's Pleasure.
2nd experience, my junior brother was doing OK. He was working at the BBC, had a fiance, his own place, driving Audi TT etc etc etc. He was only 21 and even already had the deposit to buy his first house. It was around 2007, when his colleagues took him to Casino for a fun night. Around 2008, we started hearing stories from his fiancé that he is becoming a degenerate. He could not account for money budgeted for this and that etc. 2008 Xmas, I called him upstairs and warned him that he will lose his fiancé, his life etc if he does not stop. To cut a long story short, he did not and lost everything but his life. He was sacked from his job for a reason he has not revealed till today, his fiancé kicked him out, he was couch-surfing with God knows who until we went and got him and carried him home to restart his life. He had to stay at home and incubate himself for many years to get himself back on track. We had to pay off so many credit card and bank defaults, red letters were coming through the post everyday. His total debt was around £7k. He struggled to beat his addiction, stealing my parents cash in the house, and even from his new employer that landed him in trouble with the police, but thankfully not in jail. To cut long story short, he was not even allowed access to his own bank account. My popsie had to control his bank account, fill his fuel tank for the week, then give him only £20 for the week. And this is my brother's own money he was working for, yet being babysat like a 3 year old. Cut a long story short, after years of Gamblers Anonymous, micromanagement of his finances and movements, he seems to be alright. But you know with gamblers, you can never tell what they will do when you're not with them.
In summary, I advise anyone against gambling. Some people can manage a small weekly involvement and make it seem fun, but they don't tell you about the other side. It is especially bad when your gambling is driven by desperation to make money. In Nigeria now, most of our youths have become degenerates over this gambling stuff. It is mostly due to the socio-economic condition of the country. They act out of desperation just like the MMM participants, but they don't publicised the human cost of this disease in Nigeria. So my advice to all our young men is run away from it, and don't be enticed by these ninjas publicising odds and winnings etc. This is deep. I would have thought the next few posts will be reflecting on this but hey, I hope everyone is okay. I just do not bet. No even £1 bets. I just tell myself, I can never win. Just like you said, no one ever says the bad and how much thy've lost. Everyone only ever says how much they've won. |

I do not understand your post mate. Why have these investors not matched the spendings of Chelsea, City, United? With all the spendings, the big four is almost always known quantity for the last 10 years. So what point are we making here? I am not understanding.
Your link only proves one thing - that the usuals continue to outspend the rest. And so would it be, if Real and Barelona were to be fully immersed in our league. Why are you try to make it look like it will be any different? Madrid and Barcelona will outspend the rest. FACT! You are not saying much with your post mate.
Before this last season, there were only 2 or 3 great Managers in the EPL. The others were good/average at best.Which ones are we talking about? Moyes who went to Spain and failed miserably? Mr United who went to Spain? The naked truth is that these average EPL managers will be tested in Managerial and Tactical depth when they step outside their comfort zone. The managers who cannot even win the Europa league when they come up against average LaLiga sides are the ones you are praising to high heavens?

Chelseafan1: Spurs won't sell Bale to Real, Chelsea wont sell Hazard to their rivals, Real or Barca, Man utd would never sell Cr7 to their rival real, just as Barca wont sell Neymar to Madrid.
Isco sef, Real wont agree to sell to Barca for any amount.
Just as Spurs won't dare sell Erickson to us, same way, they wont sell to Real or Barca in the same league....
The Epl money is almost evenly distributed among all teams, how would Barca and Madrid have so wide a spending power than Chelsea, Man utd, Arsenal, City in the same.
How will these two teams have the infinitely better squad in the EPL.?
Make no mistakes, all the big team will become equals or almost of same depth. This becomes incredibly complicated. I cannot argue with the sense you make but only in a separate debate. Where do we draw the line? Dayo just asked if Chelsea or City will not win the Greek League. Some Greek grass-root fellas could come up with stats of how many Youths are being taken away from their grass root football with resultant effect that impedes equality. Then they come up with arguments like..... "To start with If Chelsea were in the Dutch league, then Roman would not have bought them and City would not have been owned by Billionaires". Where do we draw the line with such arguments? We are talking pound for pound, forgetting all the in-betweens. Unless we are not; as anything else just injects an incredible amount of complicacy that renders the whole debate a complete non-starter and a huge time-waster. |

Griffon: Conjecture.
Klopp opined that they would both find this league difficult, that's his opinion. I drew up factors that could make it quite tough for Real and Barca, that is still my opinion.
So. . .? Of course it is your opinion. It doesn't mean you are not wrong. When it is convenient, you use Klopp as the reason for your correctness. I bet as much as you hate Pep, if he said this same thing, you will agree only because it suits your narrative now. If Chelsea lined up with Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale as front three, Kroos, Modric and any other idiot in midfield and Ramos, Marcelo, and any other two idiots as defenders, 8 times out of 10 tries, they will stroll to the league. (Assuming no in-fighting and off-field instabilities occur). The other 2 times, it'll be the next best team. The same applies to Barcelona. EOS! All these other yarns na just sentiments. If Chelsea had the squads of Barcelona or Madrid, and we don't win the league, it would be considered a disaster. That's how much better they are. If Barcelona and Madrid were in the EPL, their only business will be by how much they spank other teams. |

I have argued on the EPL side for many years but more and more, I became less convinced about that belief, so much I stopped. What about the most incontrovertible fact that Real Madrid and Barcelona have infinitely better squads than the rest of the EPL? That at least counts for something and just throws this argument out of the window.
If Real and Barcelona played in the PL, they will win the league hands down. I can no longer come up with any reason why they wouldn't. |

The mathematics makes sense, however one cannot argue against the sense of entitlement raised by Dayo and Roland. Before the law changed, a fella was explaining to me why it didn't make sense to work. Dude has no skills because he says he cannot be bothered to learn anything new. For this reason, he believes he cannot ever earn above £18,000 a year after tax. The 2-bed Council flat he stayed in had a rental value of £900 on the market; his Oyster Card cost just over £200, living expenses pushing upwards of £300 leaving him with disposable income of just under £100. In his words "so much for busting a gut for 22 days a month".
According to him, for him to make more in disposable income, he will need to downgrade his life-style and move into a room (rental value £450). But why should he, when he can stay unemployed, get a 2-bed flat from the council, rent one of the rooms out for £550 and claim unemployment benefits on top? This way, he gets disposable income upwards of £600 a month.
Many like to deny this happens everywhere in the UK.
Me on the other hand is busting a gut; working 20 hours a day, trying to become a millionaire. Only to get there and some funny dude feels he is entitled to 40% of my earnings because I bothered to do something? |
