Perceived intelligence and intelligence potential are very different. The potential is equal across the board but when grown men state thing like "hurricanes are caused by submarines" (direct quote from one of my students father) they are perceived to be less intelligent. When poor education or egos (which won't allow people to learn something outside their comfort zone) are involved it makes a person appear stupid.
