A Chinese millionaire identified as Zhao Zhiyong, was executed on Tuesday after being found guilty of raping underage schoolgirls over a two year period. News of execution of the 49-year-old businessman who is said to  be the former chairman of Tianyuan Flour Products in Weishi county, was posted outside the Kaifeng Intermediate People’s Court. The court found that Zhao coerced a woman named Li Na into finding young girls for him between June 2015 and January 2017. Some of the victims in turn went on to recruit more girls for Zhao.

The case came to public attention in April 2017 when a police brief, which gave sketchy details of the offences, was leaked online. Few details of the crime emerged until state news agency Xinhua, reported in December that Zhao had stood trial in the Kaifeng court in October and had been sentenced to death.

While the Chinese millionaire was executed for raping over 25 schoolgirls including 14 under the age of 14,  Li received a suspended death sentence and her husband Liu Hongyang – who chauffeured the young girls for prostitution and raped some of them – was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment. Another man, Zhou Hexin, who also had sex with some of the girls, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Professor Tijjani Mohammed Bande, a former Vice chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, has been elected as President of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.

Professor Tijjani Mohammed Bande who was elected as the President of UNGA through acclamation at the 87th plenary meeting of the Assembly in New York on Tuesday, stood as the only candidate.  He is the second Nigerian to hold the office after Joseph Garba, a retired military officer and diplomat, who led the organ between 1989 and 1990. He will be inaugurated in September.

A secondary school student of the Cedar College, Baruwa, in the Ipaja area of Lagos State, reportedly died after taking a beverage laced with Sniper.

The deceased identified as Favour Ekemedili, had taken the beverage while in school and it was gathered that she complained of severe stomach shortly after. She was reportedly rushed to the school's clinic. When the stomach ache persisted, her classmates who saw when she took the beverage showed the school management the leftover. Upon being examined, it was found to be laced with Sniper, and this prompted the school management to rush her to the General Hospital.

Confirming that the secondary school student died after taking a beverage laced with Sniper, the principal said the school management had paid a condolence visit to the family. Punch reported that the deceased’s mother, Nkem, blamed the school management for not properly monitoring her daughter while in their care.
