Lagos Government and Igbo traders

By Chukwudi Achife

Bureau Chief, Enugu

==============The statement also frowned at what it calls the continued victimisation of Igbo living outside Igbo states across the country, stressing that the situation had continued to undermine the notion of unity and harmony of all people under the Nigerian flag.

Citing the example of the recent destruction of shops and goods said to worth billions of naira belonging to Igbo traders at the Ladipo market last December on the orders of the Lagos State government, the group alleged that Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu was bent on ejecting traders at the International Trade Fair Complex despite the fact that land was duly and legitimately leased by the traders from the Federal Government which is its rightful owner

Abia relocates cattle market, awards N3.8billion contracts
By Ugochukwu Eke, Umuahia 28/08/2011 00:31:00
Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

The Abia State government has approved the relocation of the cattle market and the abattoir presently situated at the water side area of Aba to IBB Technological Village, to forestall what it described as “the attendant problems” associated with the present location of the market.

Speaking in Umuahia after the state executive council meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Don Ubani said that the state government decided to move the market and the abattoir to help decongest the constant everyday traffic logjam and other problems.

It may be recalled that the cattle market and the abattoir have been a source of constant worry as it contributes to growing health, environmental hazards as well as traffic gridlock in the area.

The planned relocation, many believe, will bring a lot of relief to people within Aba metropolis and its environs.

The market when relocated will have a new and modern abattoir built for the butchers and the IBB technological village which is very large will be giving out less that 10% of its land to the new cattle market and also help to decongest the area.

Ubani said that the EXCO has also awarded five contracts worth about N3.8 billion and that one of them is the evacuation of electricity generated at Ohiya 132 KVA power station to the tune of N287 million, stressing that it will extend to Afara, Ubakala, Ntigha, Nkwoegwu and Umuopara.

Adeyelu recalled that since governor Chime came on board, he had written about five letters seeking for audience with him, to let his government know the problems of the Yoruba community but unfortunately none of the letters was replied.

He also expressed disappointment that Chime does not care and had not asked leaders of non-indigenes in his state the problems their various groups are facing in the state, just as he regretted that the immediate past administration cancelled the allocation of land given to the Yoruba community to build its secretariat by the former military governor of the state, Navy Captain Mike Agbaje.

Two dead as soldiers, traders clash in Onitsha

Two persons were shot dead while several others sustained injuries when some soldiers clashed with traders in Onitisha, Anambra State, on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria said that the clash occurred following Anambra State Government‘s ejection order given to traders on a plot of land along the Bridge Head area of the commercial city.

An eyewitness account said trouble started at about 5pm. when some armed soldiers, drafted from the 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha, invaded the controversial plot of land.

The traders, who blocked the Enugu/Onitsha expressway in protest at the relocation order, were said to have confronted the soldiers, leading to two persons being shot dead.

The traders had insisted they would not vacate the plot claiming it was given to them by the Federal Government.

It was learnt that the soldiers, following orders from the state government had on Friday, warned the traders to vacate the place.

“The Army, in their bid to bring the situation under control when they met the traders protesting and chanting war songs, shot indiscriminately into the air.

“But in the process, two of the traders attempted to snatch a gun from one of the soldiers and perhaps in defence, they were killed.

“This thing happened within seconds,” the eye witness said.

Groups protest revocation of Onitsha Bridge head land
• Wednesday, Jan 30, 2008

The Anambra branches of the Union of Oduduwa Descendants and Arewa Brothers Association have asked the state government to hands off the controversial Bridge Head Market land in Onitsha.

The Anambra State Government has been in a battle to revoke the piece of land earlier allocated to the Federal Urban Mass Transit, near the Onitsha bridge head.

In separate letters sent to Governor Peter Obi, the groups protested the way and manner their kinsmen, trading and operating motor parks in the area were ejected.

The letters, signed by the groups’ scribes, Dr Aremu Fagbemi and Alhaji Mohammed Kano, alleged that the piece of land was leased out to them by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

They claimed that the Federal Government (FG) provided them the plot of land because Anambra government refused to allocate a piece of land to the traders.

The groups said the state government had no power to eject them without authority from the Federal Government since the said land still belonged to the Federal Government.

Besides, the groups said they still paid rents to the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

They also said that the alternative site provided by the state government is another Federal Government-owned land.

The groups vowed to pursue their legal right of occupancy as lawful tenants on the said plot of land, arguing that the decision to relocate them to another Federal Government owned land is ultra vires.

In his comment, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Mike Udah, denied tribal sentiment in the action.

Udah said the revocation became necessary to properly open up the Bridge Head area of the commercial city as the gateway to Anambra and the whole of the South East.

He described Anambra Governor Peter Obi as a detribalised Nigerian who has done everything possible to carry everybody along irrespective of tribal or religious inclinations.

The governor’s aide gave an assurance that the face-off between the government and the traders would be amicably resolved.

Question 1: Is there any possibility that more Hausa and Yoruba will be in a market located in Igboland than Igbo traders?
Question 2: Is there any possibility that only Hausa and Yorubas will be asked to vacate a market space in Igboland for clean up?
Question 3: Has Igbo traders in Lagos been ejected from their stalls in the past? What was the excuse given?
Question 4: Have other states (e.g., Rivers) ejected traders from markets in the past?
We shall be exploring these in this thread.

And, why are these Yoruba news papers recycling old news about ejection of Hausa/Yoruba traders in Onitsha and trying to create tension where there is none? This ejection story has been in the news since 2008. Please take note of the dates these articles were first published

TRADERS at the multimillion naira Marine Modern Market, Onitsha, have called on the Anambra State Government to immediately revoke the Certificate of Occupancy of a parcel of land known as Thomas Welsch Beach for overriding public interest.

Speaking at the commissioning of a borehole and the multipurpose hall of the market, the Chairman of the Marine Modern Market Traders Association, Mr Vincent Ifeme, said that the state government had in 1994 published a white paper on the report of the panel on land allocation and revocation made in the state between 1992 and 1993.

The state government, he said, rejected the recommendation of the review panel which suggested that further steps be taken to conclude partial sale of the land in dispute to individuals.

“It is against this background that we made the initial request that you revoke the Certificate of Occupancy purportedly issued over this parcel of land for overriding public interest considering what the plight of our members and their dependants would  be if ejected from their market,” Ifeme said.

He also commended the state government for the grant of N1.5 milion for the borehole project, saying: “You will recall that you promised us the sum of N2 million  for this project  of which N1.5 million was released and the association decided to borrow money to complete the project rather than abandoning it half way.

“However, our major set-back is non-availability of a standard generating set to complement the epileptic power supply to ensure effective use of the borehole.”

Boko Haram Kills 36 Igbo, Others in Mubi, Maiduguri

SUSPECTED members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, made well its threat by killing 36 Igbo people in the North, three days after the expiration of its ultimatum to southerners to leave the region.

The Moment On Saturday gathered that 30 of the people were killed yesterday in separate attacks in Mubi, Adamawa State and Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, by assailants suspected to be members of the Boko Haram.

While the Boko Haram members killed at least 20 people in Mubi, where they were attending a town hall meeting, the other 10 were killed in Maiduguri.

In a similar attack, six Christian worshippers were shot dead while 14 others were critically injured yesterday when the assailants stormed Deeper Life Church, Bogo, opposite Nasarawu junction in Gombe State in the night.

The Moment On Saturday gathered that at about noon yesterday, armed men, numbering over 10, opened fire at a town hall in Mubi, a town near Nigeria's border with Cameroon.

Adamawa State Police Commissioner, Ade Shinaba, who confirmed the figure in the Mubi attack, said the it was targeted at a hall where Igbo people were holding a town's meeting.

Shinaba told the media that the armed Boko Haram members were suspected to be responsible for the killings, although the group has not yet claimed responsibility.

Okey Raymond, 48, who was at the town hall at the time of the attack, recounted that assailed southerners started hearing gunshots through the windows and this made them scamper for safety, but the gunmen chanted: 'God is great God is great' while shooting at them.

Raymond said he hid under a table and escaped through a back door.

Residents of Mubi told newsmen the attacks occurred at a meeting to discuss the deaths of four others from the Igbo community who were killed in the town on Wednesday.

An eye witness further buttressed Raymond's story.'The first attack took place last night when four people were killed, and as people gathered this morning to discuss the matter and deliberate, gunmen suddenly appeared on the scene and started shooting and another 10 to 12 people were killed there,' he told our correspondent on Friday.

The Mubi attack in Adamawa followed the killing of six people who were shot at a church in Gombe, on Thursday.

Ahmed Mohammad, the state police spokesman, confirmed in Gombe city on Friday that six people were killed and eight others wounded in the shootings at the Deeper Life Christian Ministry Church.

The church pastor, John Jauro, said confusion broke out when the assailants opened fire and that his wife was among the dead.

A Red Cross official confirmed the incident but gave no details on the number of dead.

The residents said 10 who were killed at the hall in Mubi were mostly from the Igbo ethnic group, who are Christians and a minority in the mainly Muslim Northeast.

Earlier in the week, most local newspapers published the warning from Boko Haram that Christians had three days to leave the Muslim areas in northern Nigeria or they would be eliminated.

The militant group also claimed responsibility for a series of bomb attacks across Nigeria on Christmas Day, including one at a church near the capital Abuja that killed at least 50 people and wounded 57.

google or no google? am everly a "student" of History, I have books (ancient), witnesses and pictures regarding Nigeria-Biafra events.i have got  no time to do a comprehensive research about that cos i know the internet might not be unbiased as regard the actual resources in the igboland,

Thanks Nchara for your points but u guys should be ashamed of yourselves that your lands are left unused (undeveloped) despite the huge amount of money you realized from all the natural resources, i went to ebonyi for a film shot and I made some  relevant observations, thanks once again, I have really learnt alot from the argument, infact, one article written by an ibo phd holder made me to understand that:
Southeast is only about 3/5th of Igboland. Igboland covers the whole of Southeast, parts of Rivers, Delta, Benue, and Akwa Ibom states.
this contradicts what my igbo history student wrote in his project ooo.why now,
You are evidently an ignoramus and a poor student of history current affairs. Of course, the internet will only alleviate 1% of your ignorance as you need to be on the ground to see for yourself. Even the 1% internet test you have failed woefully. For your info, Imo and Abia are among the 9 oil-producing states, Anambra has huge oil and gas reserves that have not even been touched. Imo also has huge gas reserve. Enugu has the largest coal reserve in Nigeria. Imo and Abia are among the 14 cocoa-producing states in Nigeria. All sorts of minerals are found in all the states in the SE. We also produce quite enough plant-based food and will do more in the area of animal production if we have to. As you can see, I have not even talked about things in Igbo areas of SS (Rivers and Delta).

All of those permutations are possible
And BTW, Igbo in Rivers go beyond Ikwerre alone
There is Etche, Ahoada, Ogba Egbema Ndoni (Peter Odili's place) and Opobo, not to mention Afam and Obigbo. Among these people you will find dissenting voices here and there. Such ones are not Igbos but migrants likely from Edo. how did Nigeria win Biafra, i heard it was "because there was shortage of food in the east", am i right?

the igbo land consists of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and parts of Delta and Rivers State. Small parts of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue and Bayelsa State,
as I said, only Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, would be forced to join the biafra nation and what do they have to offer, for your info, what these states have in common is lead/zinc,, i still repeat they can always count on their land,
