Bluetooth Who is in charge of Kirikiri prison? That same person was also responsible for allowing people to visit Bode George and even host parties for him in prison. I will soon post his Yoruba name here. That prison head is as, if not more, corrupt than Ikechukwu because he must have taken money to allow all of these to happen. What Ikechukwu has done (though reprehensible by all means) is token compared to what Bankole is doing now. Banana peel go soon catch am. Igbo thieves start where Yoruba and hausa ones stop. |
Post-amnesty: Foreign Instructors Arrive By Chinedu Eze, 06.26.2010 Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Chief Timi Alaibe, has announced that the federal government has kicked off the post-amnesty programme with the training and rehabilitation of ex-militants and allayed fears that the youths from the region would be mobilized to cause havoc during the 2011 elections. Alaibe disclosed this in Lagos when he arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos to welcome a team of trainers, Lafayette and Associates who would train the ex-militants to ensure that they do not go back to violence again. He disclosed that the restructured programme would now take place at one centre at Obubra, Cross River State and would last for six months. Aliabe who said that the federal government had earmarked N4 billion for the whole rehabilitation programme expressed optimism at the eventual outcome of the programme and told newsmen that in the next six to 20 months, many ex-militants, who laid down their arms, would be rehabilitated. He said that the rehabilitation of the militants and training in the strategy of non-violence and conflict reconciliation, will commence in batches of 2, 000 for two weeks. Aliabe said the training team would train the militants to train other militants and this will make the process flow faster. “The programme will run for two weeks with a one week intermission (Post-mortem), this will be in form of biometrics, wellness tests, guidance and counseling, peace and conflict resolution classes.” “Make no mistakes Federal Government is committed to ensure that even the non-violent youths in the Niger Delta are addressed in this system.” Team leader of the Centre for Non Violence and Peace Studies, University of Rhodes Island, Dr. Bernard Lafayette, was grateful to the Nigerian government for giving his team the opportunity to help instill change in the Niger Delta just as he has done in countless other places. The team comprise twenty-six Americans and four South Africans. |

129 LASU medical students fail to graduate | Print | E-mail Written by Kunle Awosiyan, Lagos Thursday, 24 June 2010 No fewer than 129 students of Lagos State University College of Medicine could not graduate with their mates for the 2009/2010 academic session. This was revealed at the induction ceremony for the sixth graduating set of doctors, on Wednesday. According to the overall best student, Dr. Balogun Adeniyi, the college registered 159 students for medical programme but only 25 of them completed the course successfully, while 129 failed to do so. Adeniyi, who described the programme as six years of academic imprisonment, advised his mates who could not graduate this year not to be discouraged but put in more efforts to excel in the following year. However, the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has described the low number of medical graduates as academic accident in the institution. He attributed the low number of graduates to serious adherence of the college to high standard of academic performance, adding that only students who scored high grades during their 200 levels were allowed to proceed for medical programme. |
8 suspected kidnappers in police net From Tony Osauzo, Benin Thurday, June 24, 2010 • Onovo Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Eight suspected kidnappers are currently cooling their heels at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command. According to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Kachi Udeoji, the kidnappers were arrested between the 17th and 18th of this month. The arrest is coming few days after traditional worshippers including herbalists, voodoo priests, native doctors and others placed curses on kidnappers and their accomplices as well as other criminals in the state as directed by the Benin monarch. But Kachi Udeoji, who briefed journalists on the recent successes by his command, did not attribute the breakthrough recorded to the action of the traditionalist. He said the command acted on tip-off and information provided by an individual which led to the arrest of 10 suspects but two died as a result of engagement with the police. According to him, two AK49 rifles with 46 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the suspects, who were paraded before newsmen. He said the suspects confessed to have kidnapped Major General Ademokhai (retd) who parted with N10 million ransom, Pastor Samuel Osaghae, who coughed out N12 million ransom, one Osadebe, who paid N3 million and Mr. Ogiegor, who paid N2 million. Some of the suspects admitted committing the crime but claimed that they were militants who had since embraced the Federal Government’s amnesty programme and blamed the government for not fulfilling its promise, which they said led them to the crime. |
Former Detroit mayor indicted on 19 fraud, tax charges By the CNN Wire StaffJune 23, 2010 4:50 p.m. EDT Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is already serving time on obstruction charges related to efforts to cover up an affair.STORY HIGHLIGHTS Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick could be sentenced to 20 more years in prison He is accused of using donations to a tax-exempt for personal expenses He is already serving a five-year prison term after violating probation RELATED TOPICS Kwame Kilpatrick Political Scandals Michigan (CNN) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was indicted Wednesday on 19 counts of federal fraud and tax charges, according to the U.S. attorney's office in the Eastern District of Michigan. The charges against him include 10 counts of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud, five counts of filing a false tax return and one count of tax evasion, according to U.S. District Court spokesman Rod Hanson. If he is convicted, each fraud count would carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, while each tax count would carry a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, the U.S. attorney's office said. The charges stem from an alleged scheme in which Kilpatrick used donations to his Kilpatrick Civic Fund -- a tax-exempt social welfare organization -- to pay for such personal expenses as yoga and golf lessons, and campaign expenses in his 2001 and 2005 bids for mayor, according to the indictment. Kilpatrick had claimed the fund would go toward community services and voter registration information, the indictment says. Kilpatrick, 40, is currently serving five years in prison for violating probation in a 2008 case against him. That case involved two felony counts of obstruction of justice stemming from Kilpatrick's efforts to cover up an extramarital affair. He also pleaded no contest to charges of assaulting a police officer attempting to serve a subpoena on a Kilpatrick friend in the case. |
EzeUche:Ekiti is a small fry where Ondo is. Day robbers blew banks with dynamites …Girl commandeered operations Crime Alert Jun 23, 2010 By Dayo Johnson, Akure THURSDAY, June17, 2010 would forever remain unforgettable in the memory of residents of Akure, Ondo State capital. Reasons: it was the day a violent movie was enacted right in their very eyes as all the security operatives in the state literally went on holidays. However, it was a field day for a gang of heavily-armed robbers who operated unhindred. They took their time and left after clearing all the available monies in two new generation banks and those of customers inside the banks. Even the monies in the ATMs were not spared. In the melee, five persons were killed and no fewer than 20 others sustained gun shot wounds. The day of rage It was indeed, a sad day as Akure residents were held hostage for over one hour as policemen disappeared following the booming of different kinds of weapons in different locations. The eight-man gang had barred its fangs the previous day in Akure when it snatched an AK47 rifle from a constable in the Coca-Cola area in Ondo road and came out smoking the next day. As they operated, the sound of gun shots rent the air, booming with a deafening crescendo in the state capital and many thought it was war time. Indeed, in his first reaction to the incident, the Police Image-Maker in the state, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, said it was some miscreants in the town that were at work and that the police would soon round them up. Later, it dawned on all that it was more that what every one including the police could imagine. Eye-witness account Eye-witness account said the hoodlums arrived the two new generation banks in an 18-seater bus with number-plate XY 889 FST through the Owo/Benin road. The vehicle was said to have been snatched at the Maronu junction in the state capital. The driver of the bus, a father of five, was reportedly shot dead when he resisted the robbers attempt to disposses him of the bus. The dare-devil gang then headed for their target - the two banks which were adjacently located in Ilemo Street off Oba Adesida Road in Akure metropolis. Crime Alert learnt that the robbers were led by a 23 -year- old girl who had on her three bazooka guns. When they arrived the two banks, securitymen there and traders in the vicinity thought they were policemen who came for routine security checks. They later saw action when the hoodlums started shooting indiscriminately at the bank and other buildings in the vicinity to scar people away. During the shoot out, three persons were shot dead from stray bullets while the robbers, moved to the entrance of the banks with dynamites with which they blew open the security doors, unchallenged. They were said to have proceeded to the vaults after the bank workers had fled in different directions for dear lives. The female leader of the gang and another girl were strategically positioned outside while the boys were busy packing monies into several Ghana-Must- Go bags. Police on the run While the operation was going on, the streets were deserted. Policemen at the “A division” police station about 300 metres away reportedly took to their heels while some ran to the NUJ Press Centre, behind the station. In fact, it was as if the armed robbers paid for time as they operated unhindered for over an hour without any challenge from security operatives. A woman, identified as Mrs. Oluyi, a mother of four, with a baby girl strapped at her back was killed during the robbery. Reports said the deceased, an hair-dresser, came to the bank to cash some money sent to her account by her husband who works in Abuja for her child’s school fees. Sad end for mother of 4 Sadly, she arrived the bank the same time the “action “started and in a bid to escape the shooting, hid herself in one of the security rooms attached to one of the banks. She decided to raise her head few minutes later when she thought the operation had ended only for one of the robbers, to shoot her at close range. Perhaps, she was mistaken for one of the security men at the bank. Her brains littered the scene of the robbery and had to be covered with cloths by sympathisers. Her killer, it was learnt, helped her to remove the baby from her back, leaving her in a pool of blood while her vehicle, a Space Wagon with number-plate BG 95RSH was parked at the entrance of the bank. Protests after action After the incident, residents, mostly students stormed the streets and protested to the A Division Police Station with the corpse of the nursing mother and blamed the police for their insensitivity. Not a few of the policemen yanked off their uniforms to keep anonymity. However, the protesters threw stones at the station. They were later dispersed after reinforcement came from the state headquarters of the police command. For two days after, banks in the Akure metropolis closed shops while those that opened frisked customers for fear of the unknown. Unconfirmed reports said the AK47 gun snatched from a police constable the previous day was recovered from the spot where the nursing mother was killed. According to sources, the police constable attached to Fanibi Police Station was robbed of his gun on Wednesday and the following day after the robbery, the gun was reportedly picked up at the scene of the robbery. But Aremu argued that the robbery and the murder of the nursing mother should not be linked to the snatching of the gun from the policeman. He told Crime Alert, “It is not true that the gun that was recovered at the scene was the same gun earlier snatched from a policeman.” He said no arrest has been made by the police after the hoodlums’ attacks on the banks. Gov. Mimiko talks tough Shocked by the incident, the Ondo State Governor, Mr. Olusegun Mimiko, summoned all security chiefs in the state to an emergency meeting where he reportedly gave a marching order to them to track down the robbers and review the state security strategies. Mimiko described the robbery attack as ”an unfortunate incident and an undue infraction on the peace that has been enjoyed in the state since the inception of the administration, warning that the state would not be a safe haven for robbers as such infractions would be met with the stiffest preventive measures. Police trade blames However, not a few residents of the town argued that the State Police Command failed to foil the robbery operation or track down the thieves because the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Magaji Nasarawa, was out of town, attending the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, conference in Abuja. Police sources pointed out that “It was a bad day for the entire command. The CP was in Abuja attending IGP’s conference, leaving the deputy commissioner in charge of the command and in acting capacity. Again, the Special Anti-robbery squad, SARS, was on a special assignment at Ore town, to curb the spate of criminal activities in the highly- volatile and crime-rated town. ‘To everybody’s surprise, when this robbery operation was going on, no senior police officer, not even the DCP who was then the acting commissioner, was ready to give order and push other divisions and sections in the command out and trail the fleeing thives,” the source claimed. Our source also alleged sabotage on the part of some unnamed police officers within the state police command but absolved the police commissioner. According to him: “despite the absence of the team during the robbery operation, they hurriedly left Ore town for Akure that morning, but were unable to confront the fleeing robbers on Ondo Road, as military personnel barricaded the Akure-Ondo road at the frontage of the 323 Artillery Army Barracks. The team later went after the fleeing gang through Ilesa-Akure highway but the armed robbers made a detour into Ilara town and escaped to neighbouring Ilawe town in Ekiti State.

Banks shut doors in Ekiti over robbery scare | Print | E-mail Written by Stephen Gbadamosi Wednesday, 23 June 2010 Commercial banks in Ekiti State were forced to shut down operations on Tuesday, following a rumour that some armed robbers were operating at a branch of a new generation bank in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. The incident, which occurred about noon, temporarily put the entire state capital in disarray, with commuters scampering for safety. Also, men of the State Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) were taken to task as they had to take precautionary measure by placing their men on red alert. The popular Secretariat road, which connects Fajuyi Park with the House of Assembly and the state secretariat and on which most of the banks in the state are located, was placed under surveillance of a contingent of heavily armed policemen, led by Mr. Uchenna Nwamaka, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). The banks’ workers were reported to have fled immediately the news filtered into town that robbers had invaded a branch of one of them so as to avoid being caught in a semblance of bank raid that was witnessed in Akure, Ondo State last week, in which five people were reported to have lost their lives. At about 1.00 p.m., when journalists visited the banks for an on-the-spot assessment, they were still under lock and key. Some members of staff of some of the banks, who spoke with journalists on the telephone, but who asked not to be named, said they had been instructed to return to their houses for the day. |
UN Decries Illiteracy Rate In Nigeria, Others Wednesday, 23 June 2010 00:00 From Mohammed Abubakar, Abuja News - National THE need to scale up efforts towards eradicating pervading illiteracy among the E-9 group of countries formed the fulcrum of discussions at the on-going Ministerial Review Meeting of member-countries in Abuja. Countries in the E-9 group are those with a very high number of illiterates who cannot read, write or communicate in any way. They include Nigeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Egypt, Brazil China and Pakistan. Coming barely two years after a similar forum took place in Bali, Indonesia, the Abuja meeting, according to Director-General, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation, (UNESCO), Ms. Irina Bokova, is aimed at giving the E-9 countries the opportunity of assessing the successes recorded and the challenges they currently face. Nigeria assumed the Presidency of the E-9 group at the three-day summit, taking over from Indonesia. The Nigerian Presidency of the group would last for two years. According to official records, Nigeria remains the only E-9 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) facing serious challenges of turning around the illiteracy rate among its youths and adults by the 2015 timeline set to achieve education for all (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In her welcome remarks, Nigeria’s Education Minister, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, acknowledged the challenges when she said: “We recognise the fact that EFA goals will not be achieved globally if they are not achieved in the E-9 countries, because some countries may face greater cllenges than others in meeting the EFA goals by the 2015 target date. “We also recognise that meeting the 2015 timeline is of greater urgency now more than ever before. From all available evidence, the outcomes of the mid-term review of the progress of EFA published in 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report is not too encouraging, despite the increased political will of member-countries.” According to Rufai, the conference theme, “Literacy for Development,” is a statement to the fact that it was no longer tenable to question the relevance of literacy and non-formal education to national development, noting that literacy is development, empowerment and a basic human right. She added: “The focus, therefore, for all E-9 countries is to aggressively and systematically scale up literacy and adult learning and education policy, planning, statistics, programmes, monitoring and evaluation in order to improve quality of literacy, delivery, especially in the area of transforming the lives of all citizens through political economic, civic and social empowerment.” However, President Goodluck Jonathan said in a speech read by Vice President, Mohammed Namadi Sambo that Nigeria recognised the power of literacy as instrument of development. His words: “If we plan to get our people out of poverty, to join the global information super highway and hope to be counted among countries with developed systems in science and technology and a force to be reckoned with in the world’s socio economic and political arena, we must empower our people through acquisition of literacy and numeracy.” Bokova urged the member-countries to show strong political will in addressing the challenges posed by the scourge of illiteracy. |

Suspected kidnappers abduct woman in error in Owo | Print | E-mail Written by Yinka Oladoyinbo, Akure Tuesday, 22 June 2010 A case of kidnapping was again recorded in Ondo State last weekend, as unknown gunmen invaded the residence of the mother of a chieftain of the Labour Party in Oke-Ogun, Owo, Chief Olufemi Adekanmbi and kidnapped her neighbour in the process. The suspects, who were four in number, were said to have caused pandemonium in the community as they shot sporadically to scare people living in the area. Eyewitness said that after gaining access to the building, the hoodlums who came to the area in a Gulf car, asked for the whereabouts of Adekanmbi, who had come to pay a visit to her mother. But the hoodlums were said to have missed the politician by whiskers as he had left the community about 10 minutes before their arrival. Nigerian Tribune learnt that that when the hoodlums got to the building and could not found Adekanbi, they asked for his mother, who was in the building with one her neighbours. Unknown to the hoodlums, they thought the neigboour, identified as Mrs. Titilayo Ewenla, was Adekanmbi’s mother and they immediately abducted her and drove away. The gunmen, who later moved the woman to an unknown destination has placed a N30 million ransom on Mrs. Ewenla before she would be released to her family members. The state Commissioner of Police, Ballah Magaji Nasarawa, who confirmed the incident, said the command was on top of the situation and ready to apprehend the suspected kidnappers. He said he had also directed the Owo Police Division to ensure maximum security for Mrs Adekanmbi. |

It is estimated that $60 billion would be used yearly from now till the year 20:2020 to provide Nigerians with quantity and quality electricity. Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Wya said in Minna, Niger State yesterday that the country does not have the fund and had, therefore, sought the assistance of international bodies like the IFC to help out. IFC is a member of the World Bank Group. It shares the primary objective of all World Bank Group institutions: to improve the quality of the lives of people in its developing member countries. Established in 1956, IFC is the largest multilateral source of loan and equity financing for private sector projects in the developing world. On a visit to the Hydroelectric Plc in Jebba, Wya stressed that such institutions had been unwilling to provide assistance to enterprises run by government, but that with the planned coming of capable private sector on board, such corporations were revisiting their earlier reservations. He stressed that the reforms being undertaken in the sector were aimed at encouraging private public participation. Addressing the workers, he remarked: “We are not laying off the workers but your productive capacity must not only meet global standard but also justify the enormous resources invested in the sector to provide electricity on commercially oriented basis.” On wastage of electricity at home, he said: “We must not allow our children inherit this depressing state of social and economic quagmire in the power sector or even be witnesses to the mess we are passing through. Let them only read it in history books.” |

But I have two important questions to ask. 1. Can the South win any presidential election against the North in a free and fair contest? 2. Can the North win against the South without rigging from any zone? These are the same question asked from two different angles. thanks. |
North has capacity to produce president –Northern elders From Taiwo Amodu, Abuja Monday, June 21, 2010 Atiku and Buhari Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Politicians of northern extraction have admonished their counterparts in the country, not to see the North’s insistence on the existing zoning arrangement in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as a sign of weakness. It said the agitation was informed by the need to discard mutual ethnic distrust, which the arrangement has addressed, for the sake of amity in Nigeria. A statement signed by Dr Iyorchia Ayu on behalf of the Northern Political Leaders which met in Abuja last Thursday at the Yar’Adua Centre, declared that the north has the capacity to produce a president for the nation, irrespective of the zoning arrangement. “That the North is calling on politicians and other stakeholders to respect political agreements and allow the principle of zoning to run its full course should not be construed as weakness on its part. Northerners have all it takes to win free and fair elections without special arrangements,’’ the forum submitted. The forum which met with some presidential aspirants like former president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and former vice- President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in attendance regretted that an understanding which was arrived at by all stakeholders in the country to avoid confusion and avoidable crises whenever a political transition was about to take place is about to be discarded by those who are now making recourse “to puerile legal and constitutional arguments.” The statement further said: “We must either agree to respect mutual political agreements or continue to stumble from one avoidable political crisis to another to the detriment of the nation and its political stability. “The people of the North never demanded zoning of any political office in Nigeria. However, they acceded to the demands of their compatriots in the South who see zoning as the only mechanism for ensuring equal and easy access to power by every Nigerian regardless of geographical location,” he said. “The call to respect the principle of zoning is on grounds of principle and not targeted at speculated aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. “That zoning will, for the foreseeable future serve the best interest of Nigeria and its political stability, at least in the short- and medium-term. There would have been no need for special political arrangement to concede power to the South in 1999 if Nigerians were ready to accept their presidents to come, perpetually, from any part of the country,” he said. At the end of its deliberations, the gathering further agreed to ensure that former head of state, General Muhammad Buhari Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and all politicians from the north who had publicly declared their intention to contest for the presidency were invited to its next meeting, It also resolved to meet with serving governors, members of the national assembly and traditional rulers from the north. |
Graduate loses life over N50m Delta govt largesse 20 June, 2010 08:40:00 By BARRY AGBANIGBI Font size: Nemesis yesterday played a cruel role on one Mr. Titus Efe, a graduate of Computer Science from the University of Benin when he alledgedly attempted to stab a friend but was knocked down by a combi bus. The incident occurred at Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government, home of former governor of Delta State and, fugitive, Chief James Onanefe Ibori. An argument over the sharing formula of N50million largesse to the Oghara Community by the state government to persuade the militant youths to drop the proposed violent protest with a view to disrupting the hosting of President Goodluck Jonathan and the commissioning of the Teaching Hospital led to the incident. The amount was said to have been dolled out to the community by the state government after series of dialogue and consultations between the parties. A whopping sum of N50 million agreement was said to have been reached between the government and the community after Oghara youths had threatened a total break down of law and order in the state particularly at the community during the commissioning of the state’s star project – The Teaching Hospital following the continued incarceration of its initiator, Chief James Onanefe Ibori. Criticism was said to have trailed the acceptance of the largesse with opinion divided. While a group warned against the danger of such offer. Others saw it as their share of the cake. The youths reportedly felt irritated and humiliated that the elders could succumb to such move initiated by the government despite several warnings against it by them. Tension gathered momentum when the two groups when a list compiled their list for disbursement had non existent names. This development was said to have led to loss of tempers between them. Mr. Titus Efe went across the road to pick a bottle and was returning with it when he was knocked down by the vehicle. The late Titus was said to have threatened to deal with any perceived enemy with the broken bottle. He was rushed to Oghara General Hospital where he later gave up the ghost. The state police public relations officer, Mr. Charles Muka declined comment |

2011: ‘Jonathan will win but, ’ 20 June, 2010 01:37:00 By INNOCENT OKONKWO Font size: President Goodluck Jonathan Popular seer, Primate Babatunde Ayodele has said President Goodluck Jonathan would emerge victorious in the 2011 presidential elections but would not complete his term. He said Jonathan’s bid would turn Nigeria’s political space up-side down, noting that he would be rigged in during the contest. Ayodele also called for the probe of top officials of Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for wasting the country’s resources. The cleric told Sunday Champion last Friday in Lagos that Nigeria was in serious need of God’s intervention which only prayer could do. He said: "As Jonathan is coming out to contest the 2011 presidential election, he is going to disorganized everything, he will turn the whole system upside-down and he will not finish his term. If Jonathan contests, he will be rigged in but he will not complete his term and this will cause problem for this country". Ayodele warned that the ship of the nation was in the middle of the sea and advised Jonathan to seek God’s counsel before making further move about the next year’s election, warning that some people were trying to deceive him. "There are people who are there to deceive Jonathan that is why Jonathan should seek God’s face. He should do what King Ahab did when he asked God through Prophet Micah whether he should embark on a particular war or not and what the outcome of such war should be. Jonathan needs to take things easy and seek God’s counsel; all is not well with the state of our nation. "Anybody can say anything but we are not bothered; that is why we will continue to say what God has revealed, whether they like it or not. If they like, they can take what God says. At least, if we are to score our predictions, about 70 to 80 per cent of our predictions have been fulfilled. We need prayers also so that we don’t lose an elder statesman before then end of the year," he said. He said: "We need prayers to forestall political tensions in Oyo, Osun, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states. Even in Lagos too we need prayers. Lagosians should use October 1 this year to address God for the state to move forward. It is only prayer that will save the country," Ayodele who has been accurate in most of his predictions on national and international issues said the National Assembly would move for tenure elongation which he said would not give the nation the needed solution, stressing that the Messiah that would lead the country out of the political wilderness has not appeared in Nigeria’s political scene. "One thing will come up, they will talk about term extension through the constitution review but these will not take us anywhere. The Messiah of this country has not come into the political scene but the Messiah will come," he said. The cleric reiterated his earlier prediction about the break-up of the country and called for prayers among Nigerians to avert the doom which is hovering around the nation. He said: "Let me repeat that this country cannot remain one indivisible nation. People may call me the prophet of doom but we are not taking money to make predictions because what we want, God has done it for us, the day that God called me, He gave me all that I needed to do His work. There is problem in the country, workers will go on strike. The northerners will cause problem to frustrate Jonathan’s bid. Gen Babangida will not be fielded by the PDP". Ayodele described the present Super Eagles as chicken Eagles, noting that the Eagles that would do the nation proud would emerge in 2013. "The present Super Eagles is chicken Eagles, the main Super Eagles that will emerge in 2013. Lars Lagerback is a waste of fund; the authorities of Nigerian football should be probed for wasting the nation’s resources. Why are we wasting our time and resources but let Nigerians pray for the team because there is nothing that prayers cannot do but we should stop this approach of medicine after death. Let us face the reality and what is reality? It is when you are foretold of something you should take it seriously," he said. It would be recalled that Ayodele had in July last year predicted that the Super Eagles would clinch the bronze medal in the nations’ cup in Angola early this year. He also predicted the silver medal which the Eaglets won in the FIFA junior championship hosted by Nigeria. He however said that the Super Eagles would fumble in South Africa during the World Cup. |

Presidency fin-gered in Vaswani brothers’ return By Our Correspondents Sunday, 20 Jun 2010 View All (15) Comment(s) Post Comment Send to friend Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke Fifteen months after the Federal Government ordered the deportation of the Vaswani brothers from Nigeria on import duty evasion, the Indian businessmen are once more back in the country, SUNDAY PUNCH investigation has revealed. Their latest return, it was learnt, was facilitated by the office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke. Indeed, some of their associates and senior managers that were sent packing last year were sighted by one of our correspondents at their Stallion Motors Lagos office on Friday. The Vaswanis own the motor company which controls seven top brands of vehicles in the country. They are also into the importation of a wide range of goods into the country. The FG had in April 2009 deported the three brothers, Sunil, Haresh and Mahesh, as well as their 28 associates following their alleged involvement in shady deals that cost Nigeria hefty financial losses. But a Federal High Court in Lagos presided by Justice Mohammed Liman, had on November 4, 2009, set aside the deportation order on the Vaswanis. Liman who said the FG action was illegal also restrained the authorities from confiscating or sealing the business operations of the Indian businessmen. However, the EFCC appealed against the order and the matter is still in court. They had earlier been deported by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo but were recalled by the administration of the late President Umaru Yar‘Adua. The EFCC, under the superintendence of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had exposed the huge loss the government was incurring on import revenues occasioned by the activities of the Vaswanis. Also, the EFCC, under Mrs. Farida Waziri, has been trailing the Vaswani brothers, which led to the sealing of their operational business offices in Lagos and Kano. Waziri had in August 2009 initiated a N2.5bn case against an ex-Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Hamman Bello Hammed; Popular Foods Ltd., allegedly belonging to the Vaswanis, Hannatu Sulaiman and others, on the loss of revenue to government due to business activities of the Indian businessmen. The case is before Justice Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court Lagos. It was gathered that Adoke sent a memo to President Goodluck Jonathan on the need for the FG to pardon the Vaswanis so that they could return to the country to continue their business. The AGF allegedly based his plea on the fact that their companies had thousands of Nigerians in their employ. A Presidency source told SUNDAY PUNCH that the President approved Adoke‘s memo on June 9. The EFCC had in 2009 explained that its decision to seal off their offices was as a result of their refusal to honour its invitations. Its spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi, had said then, ”They have remained evasive and continued to dodge all the efforts to get them interrogated.” The Senior Special Assistant to President Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ima Niboro, did not respond to the text message sent to his phone on the matter. Efforts to get the AGF to react to the Vaswanis return saga was abortive as his telephone line was not available. However, his media adviser, Mr. Onyema Omenuwa, told SUNDAY PUNCH that he was not aware of such a memo. Further, he was pressed to get in touch with his boss and get back to our correspondent; but his feed back was not available as at the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, an employee of the company, who could not confirm whether Haresh and his brothers were in the country on Saturday, admitted that virtually all the other senior managers sent packing with the Vaswanis were back at their duty posts. He added that one of the managers attended a function held on Saturday at the Volkwagen Place, Gbagada, Lagos. He also expressed delight at their return, saying there were fears of mass sacking as the group planned to scale down its business in Nigeria. |
Fresh pardon for Vaswani brothers National News Jun 19, 2010 The twice deported Vaswani brothers – Sunil, Haresh and Maresh – have been granted a fresh presidential pardon to return to Nigeria. The presidential pardon, Sunday Vanguard gathered in Abuja, was sequel to a review of their case by the Federal Ministry of Justice. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoka was said to have raised a memo on the issue to President Goodluck Jonathan asking that the Indian businessmen be allowed to return to Nigeria. The President approved the recommendation last Wednesday. In November last year, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos quashed the deportation of the Vaswani brothers and some of their foreign workers. Besides, the court presided over by Justice Mohammed Liman declared that the Federal Government acted wrongly in withdrawing their resident permits and expatriate quota status, as it did not follow due processin their deportation. The court restrained government and its agents from “enforcing or giving effect to the letter dated April 8, 2009, withdrawing the expatriate quota status of the plaintiffs.” The brothers were first deported in May 2003 by the Obasanjo government which accused them of defrauding the country of huge import duties. Their case was however reviewed by the Yar’Adua government which, in a December 12, 2007 letter to the Vaswanis ,said their deportation order had been revoked. The then Chief of Staff to the President, General Abdullahi Mohammed said government action was based on a “careful study of your case as presented, and, after appraisal, and analysis of submissions by the various relevant government agencies, and in the spirit of justice, fairness and observance of the rule of law”. Gen. Mohammed said: “consequently, you are as from now being given an unfettered right of return to Nigeria should you choose to do so, just as all relevant agencies concerned have been informed of this development”. But in April 2009, the Vaswanis were deported for a second time for alleged N2.5 billion tax evasion. Repatriated with them were 21 of their foreign workers. The chairman of the Economic and Other Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri, at a press conference in Abuja at the time said the Vaswanis brought into Nigeria nine vessel loads of rice without paying import duties |

Drama as Suswam commissions electricity project powered by generator 20 June, 2010 01:39:00 By GODWIN AKOR, Makurdi Font size: There was mild drama in Gboko local government area of Benue state last Thursday when the council chairman, Mr Simon Abua, almost stopped Governor Gabriel Suswam from commissioning an electricity project at Tsekucha near the Benue Cement Company (BCC). The governor was about to cut the tape to commission the newly installed transformer when Mr Abua pointed at the generator used to augment electricity supply in case of power failure from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). The ceremony was however performed by the governor when it was discovered that the installed transformer was a genuine one and that it transmitted electricity. After Tsekucha, the governor’s convoy headed for Tsegba village, the country home of the three time member of the House of Representatives, Mr Terngu Tsegba, who wants to displace Senator George Akume at the Senate in 2011. When the convoy was close to the village, there was hold up as the culvert was only strong enough to allow the governor’s vehicle. At the end of the ceremony at Tsegba village, the governor’s entourage spent almost an hour as many vehicles found it difficult to turn on the narrow road. While speaking earlier at Agudo in Tarka local government area, where he had commissioned an electricity project, the governor said his administration’s rural electricity programme was aimed at boosting commerce. He expressed delight that many villages were being supplied with electricity at the time the World Cup was going on in South Africa and called on the youths and elders in the village to protect the transformer. He reiterated his commitment to the implementation of the policies and programmes contained in his administration’s blueprint, "Our Benue, Our Future" and declared that Benue money was not for any individual but for projects. He called on the people of Tarka local government to support his administration and announced that equipment for the Tomatoe Factory at Wannune, the council headquarters, would soon be installed. |
