A group of core politicians and business tycoons from South East and South South have gathered under the aegis of Jonathan Goodluck Support Group to give boost to the clamour for President Jonathan to contest in 2011.

The group, with its National Coordinator, Chief Augustine Ogbuejiofor, addressed the press in Awka, Anambra State shortly after its meeting in Enugu, urging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to give automatic ticket to Jonathan for next year’s general election.

Chief Ogbuejiofor cited what he described as drastic reduction in fuel price to N64 per liter in many parts of the country and a relatively steady power supply as outstanding achievements of President Jonathan under few months he took over mantle of leadership as president of Nigeria.

“For President Jonathan to be elected in 2011 is a divine project which we know God has ordained. If you trace his antecedent from when he was a school teacher till now you will agree with me that he is a man with vision and endowed qualities to deliver and we believe in him,” Ogbuejiofor said.
In his comment, the South East Coordinator of the group, Mr. Chris Ezenwafor said the starling qualities of Mr President makes it imperative that he should be allowed to continue in order to consolidate.

Comrade Ezenwafor advised that President Jonathan should concentrate on at least two out of seven-point agenda of his predecessor to achieve a meaningful result and endear Nigerians to him the more. According to him, every average Nigerian is happy with President Jonathan in his conscious effort to put smiles on the faces of the populace especially in the areas of reduction of petroleum pump price and electricity supply. He said with reduction in fuel prices and steady power supply, prices of other commodities will fall with time as other areas of social amenities are being handled.

Pastor MacPeters, who coordinates Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in South East at the instance of the group, urged all Christians and non Christians alike to pray for Mr President’s success in 2011 polls, described Jonathan as messiah just as the South South coordinator, Ambassador Ken Ajeh said the PDP zoning arrangement should be a forgone objective, adding that it would be an unwise decision for the PDP to stick to zoning arrangement and lose the presidency which he said he was sure Jonathan would win.

Chevron staff ,others nabbed for kidnapping
09 June, 2010 03:28:00 Our Reporter

A staff of Chevron Unlimited, Mr. Omotayo Mobolaji Johnson who allegedly recruited persons to kidnap the son of a bank executive (name withheld) has been nabbed by police in Lagos.

The Chevron geologist and two others including his hatchet men, Tommy Ebikeme and Edward Anighoro were arrested while planning to kidnap their victim.

Police also recovered the two vehicles, an infinity Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and A Kia Sportage with registration number RJ 58 KJA allegedly used by the suspects to monitor the movement of their victim preparatory to his botched kidnap

Parading the suspects before newsmen at the Command’s headquarters Ikeja,Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, said the arrest has proved that the security network in the state was effective.

He said the Chevron staff purportedly recruited Ebikeme from Niger Delta with a promise to pay him and other accomplices including a lady identified as Anita N10 million, if the kidnap was successful.

The Chevron staff whose basic salary is put at about N1.2 million per month planned to demand a ransom of N50million from the parents of the victim

‘’Preliminary police investigation revealed that the kidnap plot was hatched and masterminded by Johnson, a geologist with Chevron Plc whose wife works in one of the companies owned bt the father of the target victim. The suspect working with the aid of a female accomplice ,one Anita now at large had recruited other suspects from the Niger Delta to carry out the actual kidnap . The men were promised a cash reward of N10 million from a windfall of N 50million expected to be made from the illicit deal, if the victim was successfully taken to Ibadan,’’ police chief Akpoyibo said the suspect had several meetings at different locations, both in and out of Lagos including Hunters Restaurant located at Ladipo Kuku street, Ikeja and Million Dollar Hotel, Gbagada. He said the principal suspect, Johnson already paid N250,000 to his recruits.

"Police investigations revealed that throughout the course of his dealings with the other suspects, the principal suspect never disclosed his real names, rather, he assumed a pseudo name, Olumide. This was obviously to deceive his co-conspirators and effectively hide his true identity.

He also made sue that the contracted suspects never got to know his house or his place of work," he said.

Akpoyibo said police also recovered sleep-inducing drugs which they planned to inject boy after kidnapping.

The interest for me here is the FACT that kidnappers travel far and wide to perpetrate their crime. I am not that keen on kidnapppers from the near north operating in jigawa. It is perplexing that somebody from as far away as Rivers will be gutsy enough to travel to jigawa to perpetrate kidnapping.

Free-for-all in Oyo House of Assembly
By Olalekan Adetayo, Ibadan
Wednesday, 9 Jun 2010

Adebayo Alao-Akala

The attempt by some lawmakers to remove the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Moroof Atilola, from office snowballed into a bloody violence at the Assembly Complex, Agodi, Ibadan, on Tuesday with nine of the anti-Speaker lawmakers sustaining various degrees of injury.

One of the lawmakers, Mr. Abiola Ayorinde, who attempted to scale the fence of the Assembly to safety when political thugs suspected to be loyal to the pro-Speaker lawmakers descended on him and his colleagues, got his legs broken.

He is currently on admission at the Accidents and Emergency Unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Three of the lawmakers were also stripped by the thugs, who wore Peoples Democratic Party’s T-shirts with the portrait of the state Governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, embossed in the front.

The stripped lawmakers included Mr. Kayode Animashaun, Mr. Nofiu Baale and Mr. Kayode Inakoju.

They were later rescued from the complex and conveyed in an Armoured Personnel Carrier marked NPF 1209C to the UCH from where the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, led them in a convoy to the state police headquarters, Eleyele, where they and their other colleagues were taken into protective custody.

Bolanta later told journalists that 39 suspects were arrested at the premises of the Assembly in connection with the fracas.

He said that the suspects would be screened to ascertain their level of involvement and those found culpable would be prosecuted.

The suspects, who sat on the floor at the police headquarters for hours before taken away in a Black Maria, our correspondent observed, were politicians including some members of the PDP and an aide of the state governor.

Trouble started at about 9.30am when the lawmakers, who were moving for the removal of Atilola, arrived the complex in a group.

The suspected political thugs, who were earlier taking shelter in the car park directly opposite the complex, suddenly surged forward and descended on them, forcing some of them to run inside the complex while those who were not so luck were beaten.

Signs that all was not well started early in the morning when security was beefed up in and around the complex with men of the State Security Service and armed policemen taking strategic positions and frisking those entering the premises.

While the commotion was going on outside, however, the Speaker led 15 members loyal to him to sit for about 30 minutes amidst tight security. The House has 32 members.

During the short sitting, the House resolved to suspend eight out of the 16 anti-Speaker lawmakers for three months for allegedly “promoting discord and provoking conflict in the House of Assembly.”

The Majority Leader, Mr. Ademola Adejumobi, led the pack of suspended lawmakers.

Police Foil Kidnap Bid in Lagos
By Chiemelie Ezeobi, 06.09.2010

The Lagos State Police Command has smashed a sophisticated criminal gang and successfully aborted an elaborate and well-orchestrated plan by a gang of kidnappers deployed from the Niger Delta region to kidnap the son of a bank executive.
Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Marvel Akpoyibo, made this disclosure at a press briefing at the State Police Command headquarters yesterday.

According to Akpoyibo, “the events that led to the arrest of the suspects, started on the 1st of June when the Intelligence Unit of the Command intercepted information that a group of persons had perfected plans to kidnap a high profile target in Lagos.
Members of the gang, said to have been recruited mainly from the Niger Delta area were said to have intended the kidnap of the victim from his office at Lagos Island and thereafter whisk him away to Ibadan, after which a ransom of N50 million will be made.”

The Police, Akpoyibo continued, “mounted a massive manhunt for the suspected criminals, intelligence and undercover operatives were deployed in and around the office premises of the target victim for high-level surveillance mission and our efforts yielded positive result.”
One of the suspects, Tommy Ebikeme, who claimed to be a reformed militant lamented that despite their well-laid out plans, their efforts were foiled by the men of Lagos State Police Force whom he claimed have superior network compared to any other state in Nigeria.

According to the Police Commissioner, investigations revealed that the kidnap plot was hatched and masterminded by Omotayo Mobolaji Johnson, a geologist and staff of Chevron Plc who contacted the kidnappers under a pseudo name Olumide.
The suspect, Jonhson, refused talking to the press without the presence of his lawyer. In another development, the crack detectives of the Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos acting on a tip off, have arrested two male suspects whose stock in trade is printing of fake currency notes of different countries.

The tip off led to the discovery and recovery of large quantities of currencies of different countries and in addition high quality printing and photocopying machines used for the unwholesome trade, assorted wooden and plastic moulds used for designing the fake currencies and a large quantity for already cut to size paper for printing. One of the suspects, Akeem Alor, aged 36 years, lamented that the person that introduced him to the business had traveled to London. He said; “the people who buy from us are 419ner’s who in turn sell to unsuspecting victims.

The money we make is even small; I sell a bundle of N100, 000 for as low as N10, 000.” Akpoyibo while commending the effort of the police said, “it is a signal to criminals in Lagos State that they have no hiding place as we have our dragnet and are intelligence-driven so there is no room for those with criminal propensity in the state.”He continued; ‘The State Police Force wishes to re-affirm its commitment to the provision of world-class security to the teeming citizens of the state. While we thank the state government for their immense support in our crime fighting efforts, we wish to appeal for continued cooperation of the citizens, particularly in the areas of information sharing.”

I just read a piece of news that may explain why the kidnapping may not stop even after the federal govt amnesty was extended to Abia

Leadership (Abuja)

Nigeria: Abia Amnesty Suffers Setback As Police Kill Repentant Militant
Oliver Ndife
7 June 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Umuahia — The amnesty programme embarked upon by the Abia State government in conjunction with the federal government, Sunday, suffered a major setback, as combined team of the army and police stormed Abala in Obingwa Local Government Area, where repentant kidnappers had surrendered their arms and ammunition to the men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and members of the state government Amnesty Committee and killed a kidnap kingpin.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the state government amnesty committee, made up of men of the NSCDC, lawyer to the repentant to kidnappers and community leaders had met with Governor Theodore Orji at Government House, Umuahia on Saturday evening to finalise arrangement for the Sunday's deadline for kidnappers to lay down their arms.

It will be recalled that the deadline given to kidnappers by the state government was extended by a week from May 30 to June 6, while many said the kidnappers have been scared away by the police attack.

A reliable source said that the repentant kidnapers and some armed robbers in the area had surrendered about 10 AK-47 rifles and other weapons at a scheduled meeting point in the area on Sunday morning, when the combined team of the Police and army stormed and killed the second-in-command of the kidnap kingpin in Abala community and also destroyed some properties.

LEADERSHIP gathered that following the incident, the on-going Ibeme meeting ended abruptly, while the kidnappers threatened to abduct some members of the civil defence in attendance, but for the quick intervention of a traditional chief, who is also a member of the amnesty committee in the area
Speaking with the Leadership, lawyer to the repentant kidnappers, who is also a member of the state government's amnesty committee, Mr. Kingsley Onwudara, accused police and some members of the opposition in the state of being behind the near failure of the programme.

Onwudara, who was present at Ibeme when the news filtered in that Abala had been attacked, appeared perplexed and infuriated, queried why the Police should strike on a day and at the area where the repentant kidnappers were surrendering arms and accused them of complicity.

He said that some politicians in the state always had clandestine meetings with the kidnappers to discourage them from surrendering their arms and giving them cash incentives alongside and planned to use them for electoral malpractices come 2011.

PoliticsCall For Regionalism, Rather Than Statism, Gaining Momentum? by Nchara(op): 12:24pm On Jun 08, 2010
I subscribe to the call by Okuntimo and Soludo for regionalism. Abolish states now.

Let Nigeria return to the parliamentary government where we had regions, divide the state into regions and let every region generate its own resources and let the fedral government only be on advisory role, to regulate these regions. Certain percentages like 20 percent should then be reserved and contributed to the centre. Give power to these regions power over every sector of our national life except defence and few other issues. Let these regions have total control over the manner of their education, agriculture, sports, roads tax etc. Resources available in each state differ so let each state move according to its own pace , if this is done then Nigeria would move forward, because the problem is what we are facing now, is everybody is looking to the centre for allocation, for resources, and the centre is almost saturated
- General Paul Okutimo was the Commander of the then dreaded Rivers State Task Force

Soludo called for the pruning of Nigeria back to six regions with Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja as special centres also advocated for the abolition of the present 774 local governments, saying they are merely conduits for profligacy and waste, as well as the adoption of a unicameral legislature that would reduce the number of law- makers from 459 to 150.

Explaining what he saw as a precarious situation for the country with the present presidential system of governance, he said the military which led the nation into creation of states made a huge mistake.

He said the present costs of running the 36 states, the 774 local government areas, the large bicameral federal legislature and the Federal Government are clearly not sustainable, urging Nigerians to rally for a change that will abolish the states and embrace creation of six regions on the basis of their fiscal viability.

I will have to have a different opinion here. I am wondering what really is wrong with the north not wanting to vote for Jonathan? Are the Ijaws willing to vote for anyone else now apart from Jonathan? The North has a right to whom they vote for and it is left for every individual northerner to decide for themselves. There are more than one party in Nigeria now. Can anyone in all honesty claim that Ijaws (from where Jonathan comes) will vote for any one in these other parties? So why should we expect the north not to play the same game?

FG Set To Confront Kidnappers in Abia State – Wogu
Written by Uchenna Awom, Abuja
Monday, 07 June 2010 20:38
The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Chukwuemeka Wogu, yesterday declared that the Federal government would soon descend heavily on kidnappers in Abia State, particularly in Aba and its environs where the case is fast deteriorating.

He spoke when a group, the Obi-Ngwa Welfare Association, paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja.

He promised that the "Federal Government is desirous to make sure that there is security in the South-East in general. You will not only go home, but we will continue to celebrate our burials and traditional weddings at home".

Chief Wogu said; "Kidnapping and all that is a very sad occurrence, more so, it is sad that it is happening on our land. It can happen anywhere. We did not create it. The first kidnapping did not happen on our soil and it was not perpetuated by Ndi Ngwa." "Because of the position and attraction that Aba holds, naturally, there would be influx an of good people and bad people. But it is sad that now there is an exit of good people from the area because of the problem, but we owe it as a duty as people from that area to make sure that people do not come to corrupt our people with such ugly tendencies."

Wogu, who lauded the traditional honesty and virtue of Ngwa people, promised to be a good example. He said he would not soil that image.

He urged the association to pray for grace for the President to accomplish all that he has set out to achieve, including the determination to confront in security in the region.

PDP Warns Against Invasion Of Kidnappers In Ekiti

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has accused the opposition party, Action Congress (AC), of plotting to invade the state with kidnappers.

It also alleged that top functionaries of the government, contractors, clerics and notable business men in the state had been targeted for kidnap so as to sustain their campaign of calumny against the state government.

State Chairman of PDP, Chief Bola Olu-Ojo, stated in Ado Ekiti that; “the clandestine plot has started manifesting with the failed attempt to kidnap three expatriate workers of a construction company last week.

“We wish to alert the general public, especially security agencies in the state of the new sinister plot of the AC.

“The plot, which we learnt was hatched early last week was to, on weekends invade the state with kidnappers from the neighbouring states of Ondo and Edo states. The kidnappers are said to have been briefedon their targets, which include top members of the PDP, government functionaries, expatriate contractors, clergymen among others.

Already, the kidnappers have commenced their dastardly operation by attempting to kidnap three expatriates last Saturday. The expatriates were however lucky as they were promptly rescued by security agents.

“The new plot, which is coming after the failure of the AC at the Election Tribunal was borne out of the party’s strategy to make sure that Ekiti State remains in the public glare for the negative reasons pending the Appeal Court case, which the party (AC) intends to file against the tribunal judgment.

“It should be recalled that we raised similar alarm late last year and linked a group led by one Charles Owie Ojo as the one being used by the AC to unleash terror on the state. Charles is now in the police net.”

Great Lions and Lionesses of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) roared in excitement recently as the upgraded Ultra Modern Coscharis lecture theatre was commissioned.

An enduring legacy was bequeathed to the institution by a renowned philanthropist, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, who spent over N50million in giving the Faculty of Law a face-lift.

Dr. Maduka, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Coscharis Group had in 1995 constructed and donated a lecture theatre to the faculty. The growth of the faculty drew his attention a second time, prompting his intervention in upgrading the lecture halls that was completed on record time.

At the commissioning held recently at the Enugu Campus, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), Professor Rich Umeh, described the event as a milestone in the Law Faculty. He said: “Dr. Maduka has written his name in gold in the annals of the institution.”
The DVC recalled that Dr. Maduka built the first Faculty of Law Lecture halls of four classrooms and later volunteered to take up the ultra-modern lecture halls to accommodate the increasing students population.

“Dr. Maduka felt that considering our students population, what he bequeathed the Faculty of Law a few years ago is no longer adequate. The result of that intuition is the edifice that is standing before us as completely upgraded and ultra modern Coscharis lecture halls. I salute this great philanthropist of our time. I salute this great achiever for spending more than N50million to ensure that our children get the best of legal education”, he said.

Professor Umeh noted that the Law Faculty was de-accredited by the National Universities Commission due to absence of infrastructure. He said the timely intervention of the likes of Dr. Maduka has helped in regaining the accreditation status of the faculty.

“The accreditation team will be back sometime this year. It is our hope we get full accrediataion this time around. We will not be able to achieve this without your support as we still need other facilities like faculty building, library, law reports, faculty vehicles, among others. We call on all well- meaning individuals to emulate the example of Dr. Cosmas Maduka and come to the aid of the faculty”, he pleaded.

Also speaking, the Dean Faculty of Law, Professor Ifeoma Enemo commended Dr. Maduka for his prompt response, describing him as the foremost benefactor of the law faculty.

“Dr. Cosmas Maduka graciously attended our first Alumni Home Coming in 2004. Being a kind hearted, generous, magnanimous and noble philantropist, he was moved by our plight as presented by the then Dean of Faculty, Prof G.O.S Amadi and he immediately decided and promised again to solely reconstruct and upgrade the lecture theatre. Today, he has lived up to his promise, for which we gathered here for the commissioning. The entire staff and students of the Faculty of Law are full of appreciation of your noble deed”, she said.

Jonathan Goodluck is the greatest Clown that has ever been in Aso Rock.

He has done absolutely nothing as president, just hope he gets kicked out as soon as possible.
He does not have the votes to win an election in Nigeria, yet he is not making any effort to get them by providing dividends of democracy. Sure, he will get a ticket back to Bayelsa in 2011 if he fails to deliver.

The SADDEST thing in all of this is that the Nigerian Police are not just aware of this, but are FULLY INVOLVED.
How else wld you explain the use of Police vehicles, police vests etc.
Who are the majority of the police men in alaigbo?

Deepsoul has enough to occupy her here. I wonder why she left her problems to talk about those of others.

Besides, those who kill their kids because of suspected witchcraft do so based on their personal beliefs.

Logic alacata grin grin grin grin
So armed robbers and kidnappers do so for group (non-personal reasons)?
Do Igbo armed robbers and kidnappers do so for the Igbo?
Do hausa and yoruba and Ijaw and Edo robbers and kidnappers do so for their various tribes?

BKbabe (or whatever)

We are talking about human rituals for money. That is what gbomogbomo is all about. I have no evidence to show that Igbos were killing people for money before gbomogbomo. If you have any, please share with us.

We know that some of the robbers in Lagos are not Yoruba
We know that a cultist and a human ritualists of Yoruba origin have been arrested in port harcourt
We know that some Igbo kidnappers were arrested in northern Nigeria
We know that northern robbers operate in the south and vice versa

It is up to the police to prevent crimes, but they seem incapable of doing so or are actually part and parcel of the criminal  gangs. Most policemen that operate in Igboland are Yoruba and hausa.

You can't even hide your bias! undecided
How did Igbos redefine rituals? As we speak now, can you in all honesty say that Igbos do the worst or most rituals in Nigeria today? huh

You are entitled to your opinions but try to at least be fair minded.
Please disregard deepsoul and her warped anlysis. The point is that due to their forlon locations and minority status, many of Nigeria's ethnic groups are not covered enough by the press. That is why more than 90% of the daily news you get in Nigeria is all about Igbo/hausa/Yoruba. I can wager that more devilish things take place in these minority group areas, but low press coverage helps to cover their arses. Ijaw only came to limelight due to Jonathan and the kidnapping for ransome which they introduced. It is only in the core Niger Delta that parents kill their chiildren as suspected witches.
