Glo 1 Lands in Lagos Today •As Nigeria breaks telecoms record 09.05.2009 Add To Favorites Print This Article Post Comment History will be made in the Nigerian telecommunication industry today as Glo 1, the world's first submarine optic fibre cable to be built by a single individual company, lands in Lagos. The 9,800km long cable which stretched from the UK across all the West African countries, will be anchored to its Landing Station at Alpha Beach, Lagos, this morning. The trend in the global telecommunication industry is for a consortium of companies or even nations to combine resources to build submarine cables as was the case with the SAT submarine 3 cable which was built by a consortium of 36 countries. The Group Chief Operating Officer, Globacom Limited, Jameel Mohammed said Glo 1 would deliver transmission capacity that would radically change Nigeria and West Africa's economic landscape by linking 17 countries to the rest of the world. Jameel said the landing of Glo-1 was another milestone in the history of Nigeria’s communications industry, adding that the cable would provide unprecedented high speed internet services and make telecom services much faster, more reliable and cheaper for consumers. Explaining the seeming delay in Glo-1’s arrival, the Globacom GCOO said that implementing submarine cable projects, particularly one spanning about 10,000 km from London to Lagos is an initiative that usually takes between two to two and a half years to complete. Furthermore, he said that because the cable passed through various territorial waters and jurisdictions of several African countries, Globacom had to contend with lengthy approval processes. “We needed permissions at many levels from all those countries to pass the cable through their territorial waters. We needed approval from security agencies, approvals from oil companies and from various bodies”, he said.He said Glo-1's current and upgradable capacity is enough to provide whatever broadband capacity Nigerians require for the next 15 to 20 years at the minimum projections. He disclosed that the telecoms giant had factored Nigeria's long term bandwidth requirements into the equation, adding that Glo 1 "can carry voice traffic of all operators internationally. We can also provide IPLC (International Private Leased Circuit) for corporates”. He said high quality work was done in deeply burying the underseacable in such a way that there would be little or no chance of disruptions.Glo 1 which also has a dedicated link to the U.S, will revolutionise the provision of telecoms services in West Africa with its quality, speed, reliability and affordability for individuals and corporate organisations.Jameel said the submarine optic fibre cable will also support applications like teleconferencing, distance learning, disaster recovery and telemedicine among several other benefits for Nigerians and the people of West Africa. |

TRANSFER SCANDAL Captain Terry 'shocked' by Chelsea transfer ban By Soccernet staff September 4, 2009 * Comment Chelsea captain John Terry admits it was a "big shock" to learn on Thursday that his club have been banned by FIFA from making signings in the next two transfer windows. John Terry GettyImages Terry: Captain of club and country. The London side were stunned to learn that the serious punishment had been imposed by world football's governing body after Chelsea were found to have induced young midfielder Gael Kakuta to break his contract with RC Lens in 2007. Chelsea have pledged to launch the "strongest possible appeal" against the decision and it is expected that the case will be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is also currently dealing with a similar punishment handed to FC Sion following their signing of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary from Al-Ahly in February 2008. It has been suggested that FIFA's ban will have a highly detrimental effect on Chelsea's title-winning ambitions over the next two seasons, and Terry has conceded that when the news broke on Thursday afternoon he was taken aback. However, the contentious issue was quickly deemed inappropriate in a press conference that was called by England ahead of the country's friendly fixture against Slovenia at Wembley on Saturday. "It was a big shock," said Terry, who is expected to start Saturday's game after shaking off a groin problem. "I spoke to the club this morning and they are appealing." England's fixture against Slovenia has been designed as a warm-up for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Croatia when Fabio Capello's men can secure their place at the finals in South Africa with a victory at Wembley. Terry is joined in Capello's squad by Chelsea team-mates Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard but the Italian manager is confident that club issues will not distract the players as they prepare for a potentially pivotal week with England. "No. All the players are focused on the next game," Capello said. "I haven't spoken to the Chelsea players about this." Having led his side to seven consecutive victories in Group Six, Capello is within touching distance of reaching the finals with a victory over Croatia but the steely Italian has firmly denied that his focus is trained on anything but Saturday's game against Slovenia. "We haven't spoken about Croatia, we had a meeting on Thursday but we spoke about the game against Holland and the mistakes," Capello said. "On the evening before the game we will speak about Slovenia." Regarding his selection policy for the Slovenia game, Capello added: "I have to decide the first XI against Croatia. I will have to play the players that will play against Croatia." Captain Terry was more open regarding the country's upcoming clash with Croatia though, admitting that England have unfinished business with their Group Six rivals having been knocked out of Euro 2008 qualifying by Slaven Bilic's side on a rainy night at Wembley in November 2007. "It's difficult not to think about it but the manager has emphasised the game on Saturday to get the best out of Wednesday," Terry said. "It was a disappointing night the last time they were here and that is in the back of our minds. But we don't go in with a revenge mentality. It's a chance to put things right where we left off last season." One Croatia player who will be under the spotlight more than most on Wednesday is Eduardo following a two-game ban imposed on the Arsenal striker by UEFA for 'deceiving the referee' in a Champions League fixture with Celtic. The incident has sparked a vigorous debate on the spread of diving in British football and Wayne Rooney was forced to deny on Thursday that he was guilty of simulation when winning a penalty in Manchester United's recent victory over Arsenal. However, Terry is adamant that no England players have indulged in diving, adding: "That is not in our game at all. We come in to play the game fairly. Our mentality is that we are a very honest country and we have an honest bunch of lads here.'' |
Boko Haram: Bauchi Police Arrest, Release Islamic Scholar By Jackson Udom - 05.09.2009 The Bauchi Command recently arrested a renowned Islamic scholar and representative of the Bauchi State chapter of the Islamic Ummah, a sect that has its headquarters in Zaria, Ahmed Yusuf Yashi, over suspicion that some of his students were members of the radical Islamic group, Boko Haramu. He was, however, released after a thorough investigation. While narrating his ordeal in the hands of the police to newsmen, Yashi explained that the police stormed his nursery and primary school at Shagari area of the state and arrested five of his students. “I was sitting right in front of my house around 3:00 p.m. on that day when I saw one of the students with a mobile policeman who came along with other mobile policeman in three pickup vans. “He asked if I knew the student and whether that was my house, and I answered in the affirmative. He said they were going to arrest me and search my House,” he narrated. The Islamic scholar also said the policeman responded that he had a warrant for his arrest as well as a warrant to search his house. “About seven of them entered the house and searched everywhere ––bedrooms, drawers, toilets, but they did not find anything. They just took my laptop. The others, there were about 15 of them, stood and blocked the street in front of my house,” he stated. He said, from there, they took him to the state CID at the police command where he met the other arrested students. “The police said they arrested my students because they were wearing uniforms that looked like those of the Boko Haram and had catapults with them. They asked if we were members of the group and I said “no”. They arrested the students wearing our ceremonial uniforms during Maulud –white and green khaki. I explained that the catapults were given to them to sell to hunters in the villages by somebody and that they were not meant for violence,” Yashi said. |

PDP member testifies against party at Ekiti tribunal From Ifedayo Sayo, Ado-Ekiti A PRINCIPAL witness who claimed to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Ademati Adeyinka, yesterday told the elections petitions tribunal hearing the governorship petition filed by the Action Congress (AC) how members of his party disrupted the rerun election in his unit at Ipoti-Ekiti. advertisement Adeyinka, who was the petition witness 20 (PW20), claimed that PDP thug attacked his polling unit located at The Apostolic Primary School in the community and disrupted the election. AC and its governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, had challenged the outcome of the rerun election in which Governor Segun Oni was declared the winner. In his witness statement, Adeyinka said he arrived the polling unit at about 9.30 a.m. and voting started at about 10.30 a.m. But at exactly 11.20 a.m., he claimed that some PDP leaders, including the PDP Leader of Business in the state Assembly, Mr. Layi Oke, led other leaders to his polling unit and attacked the AC chairman in his ward and drove him away. Besides, he claimed that other supporters of the AC among the voters, including himself, were driven away from the polling unit. Adeyinka, 45, further told the tribunal that he is a Christian of the Apostolic Faith and would not lie, adding that voters were forced out of the polling unit because of the fracas, which occurred at the unit. Four other witnesses from the community, Omolewa Abiodun, Akande Olomi, Adebayo Daramola and Emmanuel Akinwale, gave evidence as to the disruption of the rerun election in the community. Abiodun, PW16, who said he was the AC polling agent for unit 007 in Ward A of Ipoti, told the tribunal that Mr. Layi Oke led thugs to disrupt the election in his unit, adding that he was "beaten seriously". He maintained that voters were forced to vote for the PDP, adding that majority of the voters, particularly sympathisers of the AC, were disallowed from voting in the unit. Abiodun said the PDP chairman was sighted giving money to the presiding officer and policemen attached to the unit, maintaining that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official and the police collaborated with the PDP to rig the election in the unit. Akande Olomi, PW17, who claimed to be the AC agent in unit 002 of Ipoti Ward B, alleged that AC members were intimidated days before the election in the community. He said on the day of the polls, PDP members drove away the AC supporters at the polling unit, adding that he did not sign the result for the unit because of the crisis at the polling unit. Adebayo Daramola said he was the AC party agent for unit 011 in Ipoti, adding that election in the unit was not free and fair because majority of the voters were disallowed from voting. Emmanuel Akinwale, who served as the polling agent for the AC at Oko Oyikaka Polling Unit, said as soon as voting began, PDP members came in their large number and intimidated voters. He said in his statement on oath that he was approached by the PDP leaders to share the remaining ballot papers between the AC and PDP and thereafter thumb-printed in favour of the two parties. He, however, added that he rejected the offer and was beaten, saying a PDP member, Kunle Adedeji, injured him and damaged his motorcycle. Two other witnesses, Femi Ojurongbe PW14 and Oke Ezekiel PW15, also told the tribunal how the election was rigged at Ifaki, Oni's hometown. Oke said journalists, observers and AC supporters were brutalised by the PDP thugs led by one Ijakoko, adding that election materials were never brought to his polling unit at Egun Unit 006 in Ifaki Ward I. He said voters, who had turned up to vote in the unit, were later informed by a PDP leader that voting had been done on their behalf, adding that some of the observers and journalists beaten by PDP thugs were later detained at the police station in Ifaki. |

Nigeria loses N132b to malaria yearly –Report From PAUL ORUDE, Bauchi Thursday, September 3, 2009 More Stories on This Section For two days, journalists from both the print and electronic media in Bauchi State converged on the Federal College of Education (FCOE), Azare for a two-day orientation and training organised by the World-Bank assisted malaria control booster project on malaria control. The topic was Malaria Control: Basic Information on Key Interventions. According to one of the facilitators, Idris Usman Sambo, Deputy Director Communications of Bauchi State Agency for the Control of Tuberculosis, Malaria, Leprosy and HIV/AIDS (BACATMA), the topic was paramount. Sambo explained that people relied on journalists for their day to day social lives and their role is very crucial because of the fact that the fight against malaria is a collective one. At the end of the exercise held between 14th and 15th August, 2009, participants came up with observations and far-reaching recommendations. One of their observations was that in spite of various efforts made by governments and donor agencies to control malaria, it remains one of the deadliest killer diseases in Nigeria. An overview of malaria implementation in Nigeria shows that N132 billion is lost to malaria annually in form of treatment costs, prevention, loss of man hours among others. Fortunately or unfortunately, malaria is preventable and treatable. Disclosing this, one of the resource persons, Dr. Yakubu Shirama said 60 per cent of out-patients visits in Nigeria are due to malaria adding that the disease affects five times as many people as HIV/AIDS, leprosy, measles and tuberculosis. Malaria, caused by the plasmodium parasite as a result of mosquito bite is responsible for 30 per cent of childhood mortality, 25 per cent of infant mortality and 11 percent of maternal deaths in Nigeria. Malaria manifests in fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, joint pains, loss of appetite and in severe cases, bleeding. Shirama said the focus of interventions of malaria control in Nigeria is in the areas of improvement in case management, promotion of Intermittent Prevention Treatment (ITP) for pregnant women. Others he added include promotion of Integrated (ITNs), environmental management, conduct of Operational Research and fostering unit and dynamic partnership. A review of the Abuja targets showed that by the end of 2010, 80 per cent of persons affected by malaria should have prompt access to appropriate treatment in 24 hours, 80 per cent of children under five years and pregnant women use treated net and 80 per cent of pregnant women use ITP. The country’s 2009-2013 strategic plan targets 80 per cent coverage for effective case management, 80 per cent coverage of population at risk for ITN and 100 per cent coverage ITP for pregnant women. Inspite of these efforts, malaria control remains a herculean task as the disease continues to ravage the country. The Journalists also observed during the orientation and training that the general lukewarm attitude of many Nigerians towards keeping a clean and healthy environment is the major factor responsible for the transmission of the disease by infected mosquitoes. Speaking during the training, the Chairman and Executive Secretary of Bauchi State Agency for the Control of Tuberculosis, Malaria, Leprosy and HIV/AIDS (BACATMA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed emphasised the importance of a clean environment to the control of malaria transmission. Admonishing Nigerians from all walks of life to a wake-up call, Dr. Mohammed, said government at all levels should re-introduction the monthly environmental sanitation, with the involvement of all communities including religious leaders in the exercise. The BACATMA boss in his submission listed some components of environmental control to include sewage disposal, good water supply, solid waste disposal, food hygiene. Others are vector (disease-carrying animals such as rats, flies, mosquitoes and so on) control and biological control, which involves using fish to eat up the lava (eggs) of mosquitoes or bacteria to control the lava before they are hatched. The participants also observed that the lack of distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) has worsen the malaria situation in the country just as they lamented that nets distributed to individuals are sold freely in the markets. They also observed that lack of adequate information and enlightenment in the scourge of the disease by the media has contributed to the increase in the scourge of malaria. the money lost i believe is not on treatment, rather it was piped away by corrupts helms men. |

Militants submitted arms seized from Cameroonians, says MEND National News Sep 1, 2009 By Emma Amaize WARRI—MOVEMENT for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta alleged yesterday that some of the weapons surrendered by militants in Bayelsa State on September 22 were those seized in a November 12, 2007 raid on Cameroon gendarmes after 21 of them were killed by Nigerian soldiers. Spokesman of the militant group, Jomo Gbomo, said yesterday, “we are hearing that the heavy browning machine guns displayed on September 22 in Yenagoa by the Bayelsa government may have come from those seized in a November 12, 2007 raid on Cameroon gendarmes where 21 of them were killed”. He recalled that when the incident occurred, MEND blamed the Nigerian Army while the military blamed militants for the attack, saying, “since the weapons have not yet been destroyed, we want the media to stimulate awareness for an independent armament expert to verify the origin of the weapons which is simple to do”. MEND spokesman, nevertheless, said the group was monitoring the development. But when Vanguard contacted the coordinator of the Disarmament sub-committee of the Presidential Committee on Amnesty, Air-Vice Marshal Lucky Ararile, he said, “I don’t know what they are talking about”. He said all he knows was that weapons were surrendered to the committee at Yenoga and they were in its custody, adding that he does not know the source of their weapons but it was their erstwhile fighters that surrendered the guns to the government. Air-Vice Marshal Ararile said MEND should come out with proof if any the guns were not surrendered by repentant militants, pointing out that it was probably after the exercise that the committee may decide to probe the sources of arms to militants. |

Kwara Poly expels 212 students, 139 to repeat By Demola Akinyemi Friday, August 28, 2009 Ilorin – Tension, yesterday, enveloped Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, as the governing council announced the expulsion of 212 students who were found guilty of alleged involvement in examination malpractices in the last first semester examination while 139 others were asked to rewrite the examination in the 2009/2010 academic session. Already, fully armed stern looking policemen were on ground to avert possible break down of law and order by the affected students, while visitors to the polytechnic were thoroughly screened by the private security guards stationed at the gate. The chairman governing council of the polytechnic, Engineer Ayinla Musa Yeketi, flanked by the newly appointed Rector, Alhaji Masud Elelu and other members of the governing council, told journalists at a press briefing that two of the five lecturers who faced the panel were found to be involved in the examination scandal and have been sacked by the governing council while the remaining three were exonerated According to him, “the academic board recommended different levels of punishment for the students, depending on the degree of involvement. For instance, 139 students are to have the courses affected carried over to the 2009/2010 session. “On the other hand, out of the five academic staff mentioned in connection with the infractions, three were found to be innocent, hence were recommended to be exonerated and recalled to the polytechnic and their official positions. However, two were found guilty, hence were recommended to be punished in accordance with the level of their involvements,” Yeketi explained. “While one was recommended for dismissal, the other was to be warned and have his promotion deferred for 6 months,” he added. Yeketi added that some ex-students were the key players in the examination fraud based on the outcome of the report of the committee that was forwarded to the academic board of the institution for consideration and later approved by the governing council of the polytechnic. Consequently, he said one of such ex-students of the institution, who are key players in the act, had his HND certificate withdrawn, another barred from seeking admission to the polytechnic for his HND progamme, while the remaining two students involved in the act would be handed over to the police for further investigation on the matter. Yeketi stressed that the governing council was committed to the academic excellence of the institution, noting that all measures that will enhance the academic programmes of the polytechnic would be put in place. |
U.S. immigration deports 63 Nigerians By Wole Shadare ANOTHER 63 Nigerians were yesterday deported by the immigration agency of the United States of America (USA) for being in possession of illegal firearms and residing in the country illegally. advertisement The deportees arrived aboard a B737 aircraft with registration number N739mi at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos at 11:15 am. The deportees, who arrived in the country from Miami, USA, comprised of seven females and 56 males who wore sordid look while they were handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service officers. Some of them who gave their names as Kafilat Ogunrinde, Adewunmi, Olufemi, Akin and Alex were said to have been arrested with guns by the U.S. police. The Guardian learnt that most of the deportees had been residing in the U.S. for between two and 10 years. Information showed that 80 per cent of them were illegal immigrants without valid documents. One of the deportees, who does not want his name in print, decried his arrest, alleging that he was picked up on his way to a super market. He, however, confessed that his documents to permit him to reside in the country had expired, adding that he lost his job to the global economic meltdown about three months ago. He said he went to the U.S. in 2004 when he could not secure a decent job in Nigeria. The deportee did not rule out returning to the U.S. after perfecting his papers. About a month ago, 23 Nigerians were deported from Spain for purportedly staying in the country illegally, while Ireland and Spain in June also deported 155 Nigerians, including infants from their countries. The deportees from Ireland, totalling 86, were made up of 45 men, 28 women and three infants, while those from Spain totalled 69, but their breakdown was unclear. A source, however, said the deportees from Spain included a Nigerian who was arrested for drug related offences. No fewer than 1,063 Nigerians have been deported from various countries in the last six months. Some people have attributed the development to the global economic meltdown ravaging most developed countries |
