Culture / Bachelors In Kano Go Into Hiding As ''Bachelor Hunter'' Goes On Prowl by ndelta1(m): 8:25am On Sep 12, 2009
Bachelors in Kano go into hiding as ''bachelor hunter'' goes on prowl

For a couple of days till the end of Ramandan unmarried men in northern Nigeria's mainly-Muslim city of Kano will be on the run to escape capture and ridicule from a roaming "bachelors' hunter".

Auwalu Sani, 40, alias Nalako, roams the streets of this commercial city at night with his noose, 'arresting' unlucky bachelors and parading them round the city amidst singing and drumming to encourage them to take wives.

Nalako caught 14 bachelors last year, one on each day.

Dressed in an amulet-dotted animal skin slung over a sleeveless hand-woven shirt, a matching cap perched on his head, and with a band of drummers and enthusiasts accompanying him, Nalako goes on the prowl for bachelors with a thick raffia noose.

"There is no escape once I place this noose on my prey", the dark, soft-spoken Nalako explained to AFP this week in a small alley in Jakara neighbourhood in the old part of the city where he had gone with his band to stalk his game.

"The noose has a special effect as any bachelor I hang it on will marry before the next Ramadan", Nalako said.

But 27 year-old Jakara resident, Hassan Hawa, wants to avoid the noose like a deadly snake.

"I'm working on getting married before next Ramadan. You never can tell, it could be my turn and I can't withstand this public ridicule", said Hawa, an artefacts trader.

The crowd of young men and children sang and danced to the thrilling beat from the band which worked on its musical instruments comprising of a gong, timpani, metal gallon with frenzy outside the house of the hapless bachelor where he was holed up.

The singing and dancing became more frenzied as Nalako blew his trademark horn and sang his age-old song ridiculing an unmarried man as a worthless dog that deserves no respect.

As two of his lieutenants dragged the caught bachelor from the house, Nalako placed the noose round his neck and smeared his face with blue indigo dye before leading him out of the alley and round the city.

Residents donated token food and money to the band as is tradition. The human game was forced to dance and sing the bachelor song.

"This is a tradition spanning three generations and it is aimed at encouraging unmarried men to take wives to curb immorality in the community", Nalako said as he blew his horn to the admiration of the crowd and ululating veiled women watching from roof tops, peering from over low mud walls and windows.

Although this carnival dubbed ?kamun gwauro? (meaning bachelor catch in local hausa) started over two centuries ago, it was strengthened and given official recognition during the reign of the puritanical ex-emir of Kano, Alu Maisango (1894 to 1901).

Nalako, which means bachelors' hunter in hausa, is a hereditary title passed down generations and for 20 years, Sani has been holding this title which he inherited from his father.

"The carnival has become part of Kano's traditional heritage," said Ali Bature, an official of the Kano State history and culture bureau.

The annual event, limited to Kano city, has undergone some transformations in the last few years.

Unlike in the past when Nalako would comb brothels and hangouts in the afternoon looking for bachelors, now the 'game' as the unmarried man is derisively called, is captured following tip-offs from friends as a practical joke, said 70 year-old Usman Mamako, the only surviving member of the Nalako band from the last generation.

In the last eight years, the carnival has turned nocturnal to forestall incessant violent clashes between participating rival gangs, said Mamako who was at the scene of the ?capture? to "relive my days and lend support to the young ones".

200-Level UNILORIN student commits suicide
By Demola Akinyemi
Friday, September 11, 2009

Ilorin - A 200-level student of the University of Ilorin, Mr Kazeem Adekeye, yesterday in Ilorin, committed suicide. His lifeless body was discovered hanging on the Oyun Bridge.

The deceased, who was a student in the department of religious studies, according to Vanguard investigation, was with his friends in Zango area of Ilorin where he was residing till the late hours of Wednesday, cracking jokes with them after breaking his fast.

One of the sympathisers, who pleaded anonymity, in an interview said the late Kazeem did not give any sign or impression that anything was wrong that could have forced him to terminate his own life.

“Nothing was wrong with him. He was okay. There was no problem that could have forced him to hang himself as much as I know. I can’t understand this.

This is unbelievable,” he stressed.

Kazeem apparently tied a strong rope on the bridge iron bar before tying the other end of the same rope on his own neck and then jumped, thereby forcing the rope to jerk his neck. He apparently died writhing in pains, hanging loosely on the bridge. The men of Kwara State Police Command later removed his corpse from the bridge.

The spokesman for the command, ASP Dabo Ezekiel, who confirmed the incident in an interview, explained that Police have commenced investigation into the ugly incident.

He said the corpse has been deposited at the UNILORIN Teaching Hospital.

With dismay i read in the Nigerian news dailies, how those so called men in powers are extolling the virtues and values of late Legal Icon Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

these same men were hard core enemies of these SENIOR ADVOCATE OF THE MASSES (SAM) when he was alive, its just a thing of the mouth for them and a point of recognition, these same men that Gani fought to return sanity back to Nigeria politics.

Benue Speaker urges prayers against death of officials
From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi

TO forestall future occurrences, the Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terseer Tsumba, has called for prayers to stop the death of top government functionaries in the state in recent times.

advertisement
Speaking while receiving the Acting Governor of the state, Stephen Lawani, who paid him a condolence visit over the death of the Clerk of the House of Assembly, Mr. Emmanuel Okaba, Tsumba said there was need for divine intervention following the death of prominent officials both in the legislative and executive arms of government.

Tsumba described the late Clerk of the House as a quintessential bureaucrat who devoted his entire working career to the development of the state House of Assembly.

"Immediately he graduated from the university, he was employed as a worker in the Benue State House of Assembly. Even during the military era, he remained an employee of the state Assembly and continued to hold fort pending the return to democracy", he said.

The Speaker added that he was saddened at the death of Okaba, who was his senior in the secondary school days and when he (Tsumba) emerged Speaker, Okaba worked hard to ensure his success.

In his remarks, Lawani regretted the passage of the late Clerk, describing the death as a loss to the entire state.

He said that he led the entire State Executive Council (SEC) to commiserate with members of the state Assembly because the members had done that when the SEC lost its members in the past.

Lawani assured the House of the state government's support in ensuring that the late Clerk was given a befitting burial.

Earlier, the House had adjourned its sitting in honour of the late Clerk.

According to Tsumba, the House would re-convene next week Thursday when it would hold a valedictory session to honour Okaba.

Politics / More Praises As Fawehinmi's Funeral Rites Begins by ndelta1(m): 6:38am On Sep 08, 2009
More praises as Fawehinmi's funeral rites begins
By Abiodun Fanoro

AT exactly 1.07 p.m. yesterday, Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi (SAN) returned to his Ikeja, Lagos residence, but in a white glass casket borne by a six-man pall-bearer from a funeral undertaking firm. The pall-bearers were preceded by a 10-man trumpet band.

Fawehinmi, dressed in one of his common white buba and soro outfit, with a pair of black shoes and a green cap, rested his head on a raised part of the enclosure serving as his pillow.

The casket was followed by members of his immediate family, closely followed by relatives, admirers and sympathisers.

The procession, which came in through the back-door receded at exactly 1.17 p.m. when activist body and his immediate family entered his house through the back sitting-room.

At this point, sympathisers including journalists, were politely told to stay out for a brief moment to allow members of the family have what the family spokesperson called "last private time with their beloved."

The last private time lasted about 33 minutes, after which the door was opened for his admirers and sympathisers who came in thousands to pay their last respect, marking the beginning of the lying-in-state.

At the centre of the back living room, the glass casket bearing Fawehinmi's body was placed on a wheel table and was guided by three ropes.

The procession, which took off from the premises of Ikeja General Hospital, at exactly noon, sang one of Gani's famous anti-oppression songs: "Solidarity is for ever, Solidarity for ever, solidarity for ever, we shall always fight for our rights." This was occasionally punctuated with some light Christian songs. The Ikeja residence had on Monday, hosted many visitors from all parts of the country and from all walks of life. As in his life-time, his "most cherished friends, known to be his weekly guests - the blind and other destitute - yesterday were among those who came to pay their last respects to the great benefactor.

The 21-blindman band led by Zakari Hassan, belonged to the Blind Youth Association in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

The blind were led into the living room where Gani's body lay by a member of the Fawehinmi family. And like others, they filed past the body, pay their last respect.

Hassan told The Guardian that they had lost a major helper, who gave them food and cloth regularly. Hassan described Gani as their father who had always protected them against oppression.

He lamented that with his death, they would face the problem of feeding and protection. It would be recalled that a member of this band was the one who commissioned the late Fawehinmi's multi-million naira residence in Ikeja in 2006. The plaque was aptly displayed at the entrance to the main building by the late human rights activist.

Also yesterday, members of Adegbite Market Women and Men Association in Mushin, Lagos, besieged the residence to pay their last respects to Fawehinmi, who they said, helped to take up their case against the then military administration in Lagos State that wanted to evict them.

The leader of the Association, Mr. Martin Ejimadu, told The Guardian that but for Fawehinmi they would have been dispossessed of their market today, adding that for the invaluable service he rendered, Gani collected little or nothing from them.

Other callers at the Ondo-born philanthropist residence included Maj.-Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo (rtd), Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, former External Affairs Minister, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chief Frank Kokori, former Minister of State for Defence, Mrs. Modupe Adelaja, Ekiti State Action Congress governorship candidate, Mr. Kayode Fayemi, his Lagos State Democratic People's Alliance's counterpart, Chief Jimi Agbaje and Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo.

In a statement distributed to journalists, Gen. Adebayo described the deceased as a great philanthropist and an exemplary human being who lived his whole life for humanity and worked tirelessly for the betterment of Nigeria.

Adebayo particularly appreciated Gani's scholarship scheme for the under-privileged, which he said, helped to emancipate people across the country.

The late legal icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, began his final journey home on Monday with fanfare. The acclaimed human rights crusader left the morgue of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for his GRA, Ikeja home at about noon in a motorcade.

The corpse, laid in a plain casket, was dressed in a white lace flowing gown (Agbada), a green cap and a pair of black shoes. It was conveyed in an ash colour Mercedes Benz hearse with registration number TOS 1.

Trailing the hearse was a long convoy of at least eight cars and trumpeters, family members and sympathisers, some of whom had been at the hospital since 10.00a.m.
Hundreds of Nigerians joined the funeral party, walking solemnly behind the hearse as it moved slowly to the home of the Fawehinmis. The journey took about one and half hours.
A multitude of sympathisers and family members were ready to receive the corpse when it arrived the home, with songs and dancing.
At exactly 1.30p.m., the corpse was placed in the inner sitting room, for the people to pay their last respects to the fallen hero.

Fawehinmi looked fresh, calm and serene in death. There was a long queue of people who took their turns to pay homage to the generally acknowledged most engaging lawyer in the history of the country.
Dignitaries across the country continued to pay glowing tributes to the memory of Fawehinmi.

Among the notables who called at the deceased’s home on Monday were fiery labour leader and former Secretary General of National Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers (NUPENG), Chief Frank Kokori, Afenifere Chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Speaker of House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, leader Yoruba Council of Elders, General Adeyinka Adebayo (retd), former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Action Congress (AC), governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, notable lawyer, Fred Agbaje, Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Marvel Akpoyibo, Factional leader of All Progressive Grand Alliance Party (APGA), Chief victor Umeh among others.

Customs Disowns Fraudsters
From Tunde Sanni in Ibadan, 09.08.2009

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo and Osun Command has disowned a gang of fraudsters which have been using the command to swindle unsuspecting members of the public who are desperate to purchase seized vehicles from the service.Command Comptroller, Evelyn Nwokocha, told newsmen in Ibadan that her command had launched an investigation into the activities of the fraudsters with a view to uncovering the masterminds and their intentions.
Nwokocha was responding to obvious pressures from the national headquarters of the NCS on the activities of the fraudsters who placed advertorials in some national dailies directing interested members of the public on the sale of some exotic cars whose payment must be paid to some bank accounts after which they would come for the delivery of the car of their choice.
The fraudsters gave the Federal Secretariat, Ibadan, Oyo state as the contact address and requested their respective clients to approach the Ibadan local office for the cars of their choice after the bank lodgment has been made.
Many Nigerians had, since the publications appeared last month, been swindled as they took the bank payment tellers to the Customs House in Ibadan where the vehicles were said to have been parked but discovered that no such arrangement existed.
But the Comptroller stated that the address given by the swindlers never existed, clarifying that the contact address of the service for Oyo/ Osun command remains at Federal Secretariat/Ikolaba junction.
According to her , she became aware of the activities of the fraudsters following traffic of persons believed to have been duped by the gang requesting for the vehicles.
She said, “after due investigation, I wish to state categorically that there is no auction sales or allocations of second hand cars by Customs in Ibadan. The said adverts did not emanate from Nigeria Customs Service and definitely no auction sale or allocation of used cars is taking place in this command."
She confessed that the action was the handiwork of fraudsters and criminal elements using dubious means to defraud members of the public.Nwokocha maintained, “this Customs House is the headquarters of Osun/Oyo Area command and not the office of the Federal Operations Unit as alleged and we do not have Customs Oyo Area 1 account in any bank. She urged media houses, internet service providers and the banks to network with the customs with a view to tracking down the fraudsters.Asked why it took the agency so long to deny any link with the con men, Nwokocha said she heard of it for the first time last week when some publications were made to that effect in some national dailies. She said, "I was posted here in March this year and the officer in charge of operations is barely two months old in this command. We would have reacted since if our attention had been drawned earlier than now."

Women shun comfort for foot fashion

Women shun comfort for foot fashion

Research from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found that 37% were willing to put up with uncomfortable shoes as long as they were fashionable.

But the problem is not just confined to women - 17% of men admit buying shoes in the wrong size.

The poll of more than 2,000 adults also found that 80% of women suffer foot problems such as cracked heels, bunions, corns and ingrowing nails.

Yet four out of 10 of all people with a foot issue have never sought medical advice.

Lorraine Jones, from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, said: "Many of us find it hard to resist a bargain and the latest fashion must-have, but it's important to remember that by buying ill-fitting shoes, you're not only going to end up in discomfort, but you are also putting your health at risk.

"What is particularly worrying is that this is just the number of people who are aware that they are buying ill-fitting shoes; many people are wearing the wrong sized shoes on a daily basis without even realising it.

"Most people in the UK suffer from a foot problem at some point in their lives, and while many are fairly minor, some can be extremely painful and disabling.

"While not all foot problems can be prevented, a large majority of problems do result from incorrect or poor footwear.

"It is important to wear shoes in the correct size that are appropriate for the activity you need them for."

Emeka Etiaba dumps APGA
By Okey Maduforo Correspondent, Awka

The political landscape of Anambra State, ahead of 2010 gubernatorial election, witnessed a jolt on Friday when Emeka Etiaba, gubernatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), announced his decision to leave the party.

advertisement

Etiaba told reporters in Awka that he was yet to decide the political party he would join, but noted that there was no going back in his ambition to become the next governor of Anambra.

The lawyer further hinted that the leader of APGA, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, might equally dump the party. He said the elder statesman was aware and in support of his movement out of the party.

His words: "You were all here the day I declared publicly to run for this election, and you remember what Ojukwu said about Emeka Etiaba. He said: wherever you go, I will go. Any time I look at my right or left or at my back, I see him.

"He is not a man that wastes words; so today, I assure you that when I decided to quit, I did have his consent to quit and if you look at the letter I gave to you, I addressed him as my leader. I never said APGA leader or chairman of Board of Trustees. So his support is not in doubt and in time to come I believe that people will know."

According to Etiaba's letter to Chief Victor Umeh, and copied APGA bigwigs, the barrister gave his reasons for leaving the party, which include "unsubstantiated accusations from the hierarchy of the party that I am in the governorship race to finally negotiate a deputy governorship position with a given candidate while destroying our party in the process, total lockout from the state, local government and ward party offices and machineries, as well as threat of sanction against party members and officials that cooperate with my campaign organisation".

Other reasons he gave include "refusal of the state executive to grant audience to my campaign organisation, total rejection of our gifts to them on the said occasion and your refusal to act on my petition against such undemocratic and un-courteous treatment."

The son of the incumbent deputy governor of the state, added that "public castigation of my candidacy, threat of expulsion from the party, if I continued with my governorship campaign activities" pushed him out of the party.

Etiaba, however, emphasised in the letter that: "As I leave our party to continue with my governorship aspiration elsewhere with a view to taking Anambra State to the next level, I say thank you and wish that you extend my love to members of the National Working Committee and the entire members of the party."

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Ferguson Backs Eduardo Suspension by ndelta1(m): 8:10am On Sep 05, 2009
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Uefa's decision to ban Arsenal striker Eduardo for two Champions League matches for diving.

The Croatia forward was found guilty of deceiving referee Manuel Gonzalez to win a penalty against Celtic in August.

Ferguson said European football's governing body had to send a strong disciplinary message because of the high-profile nature of the competition.

"I have to agree that something had to be done," said the Scot.

Arsenal were leading 2-0 on aggregate when Eduardo fell under a challenge from Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

The striker scored the resulting penalty and the Gunners went on to win the two-leg tie 5-1.

Arsenal are appealing against the ban and released a statement calling the decision by European football's governing body "deeply flawed".

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has accused Uefa of conducting a "witch-hunt" and claimed that they had set a dangerous precedent whereby any decision made by an official can be contested after the match.

606: DEBATE
Ferguson would have had a completely different tune if one of his players were being made an example of

RVN - Ramsey Vela Nasri

And Ferguson, who is attending a Uefa coaching forum in Nyon - along with Wenger, among others - supports the way the Frenchman has dealt with the situation.

He added: "I agree with Arsene, I would ask the same question 'is it going to happen to everyone?'

"You become insular and protective of your own player and own team, we're all selfish that way.

"I would have been saying 'what about all the rest of the players?'.

"But I wouldn't have been pleased if my player had done that.

"I wouldn't say it publicly though, because when you do that you're in danger of losing the morale of the dressing room.

"Privately, as I've done many times, you have a different view, but I wouldn't do it publicly."

If Arsenal's appeal fails Eduardo will miss the trip to Standard Liege on 16 September and the home match with Olympiacos on 29 September.
