Very insensitive remark@Pth. If that is what rocks the girl's boat, then so be it. She asked for our advice, and we told her to leap before jumping. Apparently, she has made up her mind in visiting the guy. Nothing we can do to change it. Labelling her fat and suggesting that she is desperate is a callous remark

All these explanation probably wont convince the minds of people set in associating sciences with every spiritual problems encountered by people. Truth is the devil is real, but fortunately, he was Defeated by Jesus Christ on the Cross. Always invoke the Name of Jesus Christ when you are being attacked, and the spirit, no matter how 'powerful' it is, would yield to the Name Above All Names, Jesus Christ.

Sometimes, experience is the best teacher, but then, these stories are stuff that you hear from teenagers, not from a grown-up woman. The whole story sounds quite suspicious from the beginning, you have been in a relationship with this guy for five years, yet you have not met face to face before? Why? He lives in Greece, and you live in California.

2. How certain are you that this guy is legitimately employed?

3. Why would you throw all cares to the wind by visiting Nigeria when you have not even met this guy? Supposing you get robbed or worse get maimed by dubious people, masquerading around as genuine people.

There are stories of foreigners who travelled to Nigeria and had one of the worst experiences in their lives. For you who have little knowledge (I would assume) about the culture, and his people, then, leaping before viewing, even if it is just for a vist is certainly not advisable. Please reconsider your visits, and at the very least, try and meet this guy face to face, be it in Greece or in California.

I bet if thatch houses originated from the western world, the likes of naira4doll would gladly want them to be implemented in Nigeria. And the same mindset has led to the surge of homelessness in Nigeria, because of the petty mindset of some of the ruling powers in Nigeria to demoish thatch houses.

BusinessWhat Is Art? How Much Would You Spend On A Work Of Art/painting? by Ndipe(op): 10:35am On Aug 26, 2007
I am a skeptic when it comes to knowing the value of a piece of Art. For once, how can you differentiate between what may be authentic and what may be fake? For those who may be involved in this subject, Picasso holds a venerable position in the Artistic world and some of his paintings/art works easily command a rate of over a million dollars. Still, what is the big deal about this piece of works? I wont be surprised, though it has not been verified, if among a select group of the wealthy in America, owning a piece of Picasso might be considered a criteria in joining an echelon of the 'sophisticated' crowd in America.

A while back, John Stossel of ABC News did a documentary on Arts/Paintings. I cant recall what it was all about, but if my imagination serves me right, I think the journalist was even questioning the value of this work of art. Funny (and I would post the link later on), a piece of art that they bought for five dollars at a thrift store, it was rated highly. Strangely, another piece of art created by four years old were ranked higher than experienced artists, even by curators! Unbelievable but true? So my question is this . . . do you think that works of arts by Picasso and the rest of his contemporaries are overhyped by 'arts lovers'? My humble opinion. No piece of art is worth 10 million dollars, even if you are to include labor in it, but for 'art lovers', I might be termed 'unsophisticated'.
PoliticsRe: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by Ndipe(m): 9:32am On Aug 26, 2007
It will be a shame if that man resigns. I could be wrong, but from what I have read about him (excluding the controversial attempt to restore the value of the Naira) Soludo appears to have the interest of Nigeria at heart.
PoliticsRe: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by Ndipe(m): 9:22am On Aug 26, 2007
You did not imply so, you simply raised a controversial issue that may have rankled the likes of Yaradua, and I hastily implied that you did. Pardon me, but what are your views on the recent attempt by Soludo to restore restore (?) the value of the Naira?
PoliticsRe: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by Ndipe(m): 9:08am On Aug 26, 2007
So in your opinion, Soludo's policies in restoring the value of the Naira was not viable, economically?
PoliticsRe: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by Ndipe(m): 8:54am On Aug 26, 2007
Well if it is true that Soludo has sucessfully transformed the banking sector, then, what are the grievances against him by the likes of Yaradua? It is not a smart move to drop someone whose handiwork has propelled the banking industry into a state of achievement, and further on, has sucessfully worked to restabilize the Naira. As of last year, the Naira was trading for 140 to one dollar, and now, it's dropped to 128. Is that not remarkable?
EducationRe: Nigerian Boarding House Stories And Pictures by Ndipe(m): 8:48am On Aug 26, 2007
For me, cleanning of gutters wasnt bad. I hated sweeping the dormitory, did not like morning/saturday inspection. But overall, school was fun. The stories from school? some of mine, were, should I just say out of the ordinary. In my final year, a junior student got into a fight with a relative of a friend of mine, and whupped him seriously. Much later, this junior student confessed to us that he was a member of the spiritual underworld. This man held some of us spell bound with stories on how he was the deputy/2nd in command of the underworld and so on. He also revealed names of some famous Nigerians who, he claimed were alligned with this organization, and the control he exerted on him. People just listened to this guy, and infact, my friend was able to write down his stories. I hesitate to call them testimonies, because they might not be true. After I left secondary school, I read an obituary of his father in the newspapers. My classmate, whose relative was my flatmate off Uniuyo, was lamenting the death of the man. I could not summon the courage to tell her that the man's son, had confessed to being a member of the underworld. But, now, as I think about  it, I have to inquire, why is that when somebody leaves a group, they claim that in their former lives, they were always the '2nd in command' of the father of all liars?

Nna, this was in my final year, and they were some sort of stuffs that were happing during that period.

Then, prior to this, some women came to my school and started weeping that there would be death(s) in my school, because of the presence of . . . on trees. These women prayed over it, and reported it to the literature mistress, who was involved in organizing Bible studies at her house on campus. When the Chaplain was informed, he was highly critical of the story. See, the Chaplain is Lutheran (and he so much frowned on it whenever we had private prayers in the Chapel), while the lady was I should think a born again Christian.

Still on that subject, some students were complaining of the teaching methods of the literature mistress. I did not have a problem with her style of teaching, because I aced her classes, for the most part. Some students, I think may have attributed it to partiality, but, that's not the point though. The complaints grew louder, to the point that the vice principal convened a meeting with my classmates. Her grievance? Someone had sent an annonymous letter that the teacher's style of educating us was not effective. "Whodunnit", as they say? Nobody could reveal, but some students raised their voices. The woman countered back that the reason why the male students were complaining was that we thought she was not . . .

I finished school more than a decade ago, but some of the memories of high school days remain fresh in my psyche. I really miss the institution, my classmates, teachers, the trips to the streams (particularly in the afternoons/evenings). I wish I could relieve those days once again.
PoliticsRe: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by Ndipe(m): 7:29am On Aug 26, 2007
Dblock, perhaps, you could address the banking policies instituted by Soludo which led to a high rate of unemployment in the banking sector. Moreso, does it really make economic sense to spend lots of money in instituting coins that are becoming obsolete in the Nigerian society. Or, maybe, he was just staging a comeback for the popularity of coins with the Nigerian masses. I cant really say if his economic policies are sound or not, but there was an outcry in certain quarters when he ordered banks to come up with a certain amount of money, or risk being shuttered. And true, there are some people who lost their jobs as a result of this policies.
PoliticsRe: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by Ndipe(m): 10:59pm On Aug 24, 2007
And why was he dropped? Come, for those living back home, how would you assess the policies of Soludo? He's been lauded for transforming the banking sector in Nigeria, so it comes as a surprise that he's been dropped from the National Economic team. Is this ok?

Husband pulls over his deputy wife twice Mon Aug 13, 7:54 PM ET

ELKO, Nev. - An off-duty Elko County sheriff's deputy was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol after her husband, a fellow deputy, pulled her over.

Charlotte Moore, 36, a jail deputy, was off duty driving her 2004 Pontiac Grand Am on Saturday when she was pulled over by her husband, Elko County Sheriffs Deputy Mike Moore, a police report said.

In two separate accounts of the incident, Mike Moore indicated she initially was pulled over for either speeding or making an illegal turn.

She allegedly left before being administered a portable breathalyzer test, the Elko Daily Free Press reported.

Mike Moore pulled her over again and called for backup. He left shortly after another officer arrived.

Mike Moore was following procedure when he asked for backup, Elko County Undersheriff Rocky Gonzalez told the newspaper.

Neither Mike nor Charlotte Moore was available for comment Monday. She reportedly had been drinking approximately two hours earlier at a downtown business group's wine walk, the newspaper said.

Charlotte Moore was released on Sunday and placed on paid administrative leave.

Nice. But why is it that an award instituted by an African has little relevance in global affairs (for the most part), hence it is not highly coveted by other races, as we would over their award?

Why cant an award instituted by the likes of Achebe and his contemporaries give a run for the prestige of other awards like the Booker prize, the Nobel prize, et al?

How can you reconcile Peter's marriage, as written in the Holy Bible to your rules that Popes are required to be celibate?

Some peeps are making a big deal out of the Nobel prize. What difference is that award and the Noma award, apart from the prize money? There is no right word to put in describing people who are salivating over an award instituted by a white man. And as a correction, there was a war of words exchanged between Achebe and Soyinka over the later's triumph as a Nobel Laurete. This was in 1986, and I read in Newswatch magazine. I don't even want to dredge up the bad blood that erupted between Achebe and Soyinka. It was in the edition of Newswatch magazine.

I am not totally conversant with the Negritude movement espoused by Leopold Senghor, but some of us Africans need to stop salivating over an award instituted by the white race, particularly those who are anti-colonialist. Wont it be an irony if Ngugi Wa Thiongo was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature? Do you think he deserves to win the award, because he is East Africa's leading writer?

@SMC, since you have admitted that Achebe is one of Africa's leading writer (not Africa's leading writer), why then do you think he is deserving of the Nobel prize over his other contemporaries?

Truth is some people are making a big deal out of the Nobel prize. It is just a prize as Obong succintly stated earlier. Some of our writers seek the attention of the white race to award them with prizes to either elevate their ego, or confirm that 'they have arrived'. Tell me, is there any prize, instituted by an African that is covetly sought by the white race? No. But some of our same writers would be the same to strive for the equality of the races, while seeking attention from the caucasian to further prove that they are geniuses in their field. Yesterday, or today, I was doing a research on a somewhat popular Nigerian female writer, who, wrote that her work has caught the attention of Bill Clinton. Ok, Bill Clinton may be an admirer of your work, but would it have made any difference to you, if the president of Senegal or South Africa paid glowing reviews to your work?

Would a writer of this caliber, John Grisham want any President of an African country to write a glowing review on his novel? Probably not.

LiteratureRe: Why Has Achebe Not Won Nobel Laureate? by Ndipe(m): 12:22am On Aug 12, 2007
@SMC, since the Nobel Prize is the yardstick of one's status in their respective field, whether they are in the sciences or the arts, I have to ask again, why is it that some blacks still look upto the white man to present us with an award, as a validation of our talent? Why can't the recipient institute an award to benefit people of different races? From my observation, any award that is instituted by an African solely benefits an African or the black race. Yet, some die hard anti-colonialists/supremacy of the black race of the white race, would ironically want the same caucasian to bestow them with an award as PROOF of their skills in their respective field. How about you INSTITUTE an award that globally overshadow the prestige of the Nobel prize and would benefit other races?

Let me ask this question, "Do you really think that his inability to win the prize has in someway dented his image as Africa's leading writer"? If your response is Yes, explain why, and if it is "No", then, why seek the award?
