TravelRe: On Nigerians And The 'must Travel Mentality' by ndubisik(m): 12:48pm On Sep 28, 2014
For me, what the op is saying is the must travel mentality is overrated. If u Travel go, travel come back. At the end of the day,ur money is what makes things work over there. The only difference between here and the west is proper utilization of resources. If we the youth run away from what is ours, who's gonna fix it for us? Our frail elders? Or our unborn children? The battle we face now is more crucial than even that at Independence in 1960.

londoner: Well, I think Nigerians (and people from developing countries generally) have an impression about what they will automatically get from simply going abroad. Mentally, they are not prepared.

You see/hear it in the way they relate to family members, that are already abroad. The Nigerians honestly believe those abroad are living the high life, that they have money to burn. That is not the case.

I would not say, don't go abroad, but have a thought to looking homeward once you "make it" (whatever that means to you), and I don't mean just going at Xmas to show off and brainwash people into seeing you as an "oga". Actually make plans to replicate the changes you have seen outside, back in Nigeria. In a way that responds to where Nigeria is now. The changes you say you want to see. They are only abroad because people made it so.

That is what you/we would be enjoying, the effort of people who have made the sacrifice.

There is serious money and success to be made in Nigeria. It may be that it is out of your reach until you leave, to go back in. Many have done it. For those who claim they have not seen a man person abroad, yes you may not have seen them on the streets (which I doubt), but there will definately be hospitals for the mentally ill. There will be the homeless abroad.
If you work and pay tax, you are helping to pay for it.

Please don't let anyone abroad come to NL and lie to you.....lol

Its time Nigerians who go abroad actually tell those at home THE TRUTH about what happens here.

There ARE mad people, there ARE homeless people, there ARE peple who beg, there ARE people who have to go to food banks to be able to feed themselves and their family, EVEN WHEN THEY ARE WORKING. There ARE people who really are struggling abroad, including the indegenes of those places.

It's not a paradise. I understand that things may be more accessible if you are outside of the "connection" obsessed Nigeria, but please stop thinking that going abroad is the destination. Its just the start of your journey.

Truly, you are only benefitting from the efforts of people who, previously recognised their country lacked, but they were also willing to stay and build what they wanted to see.

I find it interesting when people cite the health services, roads etc in the country they are in. I would bet money that they NEVER read up on the origins of some of these features of the west. Do they really read up and research their journey to having those things?

Its just the end result. Even countries that once had corrupt leaders, who today dont HAVE A JOURNEY to the society we are enjoying today.

Nigeria needs people who are interested in being part of the journey to the Nigeria they want to see. It is the lack of this type of citizen that ensures nothing changes in Nigeria.

Travel, if you want to, but try not to forget to make your contribution Afterall, if we dont want to contribute to a change, why should we complain, that it is staying the same?
Y'all should settle down and read this wise comment. Enough said

Nicholas Ibekwe you are a man of the people joor.

All those religious bigots, can one of you please explain how an aircraft made the building collapse as reported by your pastor? Tell me, how many of you would exchange 50,000 for the life of one of your relatives? God has given us brains; you don't expect him to also give you a manual on how to make good use of it.

3) Send the right signals

Shy people are often misdiagnosed as unfriendly, aloof, or 'stuck up'. Shyness can make us look unapproachable.
Research has found that we find people who smile and look directly at us more attractive. And people are 86% more likely to strike up conversations with strangers in the street if they are smiling.

Another benefit is that smiling even when you don't feel like it actually makes you feel better – which can lead to real smiling. smiley An important point here: If you smile at someone and they don't smile back, that is not your problem. We can't make anyone accept our friendliness any more that we can make someone like us through sheer force.

4) Focus on putting other people at their ease

I've seen so many people who suffered from arachnophobia – fear of spiders. The trouble was, I had a fear of spiders myself! But rather than working on myself directly, I found that working to lift other people's fear magically lifted my own. The point here is that by focusing on putting other people at their ease, you'll find that you feel much more comfortable. Notice who seems a little more diffident or anxious and work to help them feel more relaxed.

2) Prepare properly

Once shyness has gone you won't need to do this;
but whilst you still feel shy, practice preparing
topics of conversation. If you have an idea of the
type of people that are going to be at a gathering,
then do a little homework.

If you feel shy at work, look out for interesting news
items over the weekend and bring them into
conversation on Monday.
Get into the habit of remembering what people
have told you and referring back to it as future
conversation starters: "Hey John, you know you
were saying you wanted to see that film? Well I saw
last night that it's now playing at The
"No More Shyness" Cinema!" or: "Jane, you were
telling me that your daughter loves the circus;
apparently there is a circus coming to town next
week..."

But overcoming shyness isn't just about talking
more.
RomanceRe: How To Overcome Shyness by ndubisik(op): 10:41am On Sep 25, 2014
So to kick us off, I want you to think about where you put your attention...

1) Focus outwards, away from your shyness

Shyness makes us self-absorbed. This is descriptive, not judgemental. Shy people can feel they have 'nothing to say', that they should have amazing stories to tell and be the life and soul of the party.
But consider this:
People love you when you find them interesting. Overcoming shyness isn't about suddenly thinking you're great. It's more about forgetting yourself and focusing outward. Ask questions and cultivate genuine curiosity. If you are at a party with strangers, try to connect how everyone knows each other. You can ask questions such as: "How do you know Kathy?" (if Kathy is throwing the party J) or: "I live next door. Are you one of Kathy's tennis friends?"

This:
- Gives you something to talk about.
- Gives other people a chance to talk about themselves (for which they will love you).
- Takes your attention off yourself.

Until shyness fades more completely, the next tip
will also help you out.

How to Overcome Shyness

Does the simple thought of talking in front of people make
you want to stick your head out the window after a shower
in hopes of getting a cold? If so, you are far from alone.
Many people in the world suffer from mild to extreme
shyness and are struggling to overcome it. Remember that
breaking out from that shell doesn't magically happen
overnight. It takes time, effort, and of course, the desire to
change. You're on the right track by just being on this page...now let's keep going.

freshness2020: No one should expect anything from each other. Be it the lady or man! It should be based on a free will term! The problem is "expectation".. When ♈όϋ live a life of not expecting anything from anybody in whatever regard, I bet ♈όϋ will live happier!
It shouldn't be on a basis of "as I give, I must get in return".
Let's try and live above that mentality !

Some people on NL are just hypocrites!!!

Same people asking what the hype on the iphone is about will be killing themselves over some new telemundo series or some other dumb stuff. Now they are talking trash just because money is involved. If I had the money, I'll buy the iphone6. You won't find someone like Seun complaining about the Iphone. If you don't like the iphone, its probably not for you.
