I am fully convinced that GEJ is not in control and that he is fully unqualified and lacks the ability to govern a country such as ours. How he allowed the situation to get to this level is beyond me.  His advisers appear to be grossly incompetent and suffer from a severe disconnect from the masses - they seem to be living in a bubble.

GEJ needs to take the bull by the horn, reverse this untimely policy, start fighting corruption and Boko Haram, and regain the trust of the people of Nigeria. I'm afraid that his government may not survive if this strike continues beyond this week. Even if we assume that N1.4trillion is the amount needed to sustain the 419 subsidy, this administration can raise more than that amount by fighing corruption in the oil sector alone.

Sanusi itemized various ways in which corruption and looting takes place in the oil sector, let them invest only N1billion to plug those holes and use the savings to finance the 419 subsidy. Why implement a policy in a manner that causes 90% - 150% inflation overnight?  This is worse that foolishness and incompetence, it is outright shameful.

Politics › State Govs Initiated Subsidy Removal -okonjo-iweala by nduchucks(op): 12:58am On Jan 11, 2012
Madame wants Nigerians to be fair and objective in their criticisms, as far as the removal of the fuel subsidy is concerned. hehehehe Was she fair and objective in the implementation of the said subsidy removal? olodo

THE Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said that state governors entered into an agreement with the Federal Government on the removal of the fuel subsidy.

In her reaction to criticisms that she was solely responsible for the hike in the price of petrol, Okonjo-Iweala stated that the state governors were equally in support of the subsidy removal, adding that the decision was not taken by the Federal Government only.

Speaking on ‘Matters Arising,’ a programme of the Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Tuesday, the Finance Minister, while articulating that the benefits from removal of the fuel subsidy far outweighed the present hardship the people are facing, stated that she was not responsible for the removal of the subsidy, as many people had claimed, adding that the decision was even taken six months before she joined the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“I was not there six months ago, when the state governors deliberated and agreed on the removal of fuel subsidy. Most of the governors then were aware. So, it would be unfair to say that I am solely responsible for this. What of the governors?” she said, adding that, “I am sure it is the people who don’t want me here in the first place that are spreading this false information around.”

Dr Okonjo-Iweala, therefore, tasked Nigerians to be fair and objective in their criticisms, as far as the removal of the fuel subsidy is concerned, insisting that the decision to remove fuel subsidy, as claimed in many quarters, was not determined by her alone.

Another display of gross incompetence by the National Security Adviser to the President. Are these people so daft, that they do not know how to form partnerships to fight terrorism through diplomatic means and other high level security meetings that they have to announce their security plans in Washington times?

The arrangement Azazi seems to be campaigning for should have been put in place long before 2012. I wonder how he now hopes to accomplish his objectives particularly after the President has announced to the world that the terrorists have infiltrated every level of the executive arm of Government. These people are jokers and bofoons.

In as much some of the infiltrators are in the executive arm of government, some of them are in the parliamentary arm of government, while some of them are even in the judiciary, as the President put it, and reasonable people know that the said culprits are not rabbits, goats, parrots, cows, kudun kudus, insects, or some other creatures, but real human beings, why in the world has this President not rounded them up and charged them with treason??

This year could yet be Nigeria’s defining moment. It is not clear whether Jonathan understands the risky conjunction of explosive events he has put together in a pressure pot: whether it is the result of one of his typical but bungling deliberateness or the outcome of his boyish indifference to danger.

But here he is, with universities closed down and anger among the youths simmering, he began implementing the removal of fuel subsidy on January 1, just when the ordinary Nigerian had exhausted himself financially, and when Boko Haram had stretched the security agencies to their tactical limit.

If the country comes out of the cauldron unscathed, it is unlikely anything else would hurt it in the immediate future. But given the stage of the country’s political evolution, the chances of achieving that bliss is more theoretical than real.
^^^^^+1000

If the government does not reverse the removal of fuel subsidy before the strike begins, we should expect the most vicious and violent attacks to date, by Boko Haram, starting on Monday. Our clueless government fully expects to keep the sect under control during the strike.

I predict that more innocent Nigerians who go on strike will be killed than Boko Haram members in the next few days. As of today, while Suleja is on fire as we speak and GEJ security operatives are nowhere to be found, we have a 70% chance of being under a military government within 2 weeks. I sincerely hope to be wrong on my predictions.

GEJ had a wonderful opportunity to write his name in history, in golden ink, by organizing the best election in our history but he chose to break his own promise, he ran for the high office, and additionally broke the gentleman's agreement that has held our fragile democracy together for many years. To make matters worse, he blatantly rigged the election further insulting our intelligence.

As if these miscalculations were not enough, he announced the removal of fuel subsidy in the most daft manner and at the worst possible tiime. The above statement is unfortunate. I, like you, am against fuel subsidy and agree that it should be scrapped. Having said that, I do not believe that we should be paying more than N65 per litre.

Corruption, which is the root of the subsidy brouhaha, is what the government should be addressing with the same vigor and promptness it is using to remove the fuel subsidy. It is quite dishonest of you to equate protesters of abruptly high fuel costs and costs of other goods and services, with supporters of thieves and corrupt businessmen. Shame on you for this act.

How come Sanusi chose to ignore or not to elaborate on the possibility of providing crude oil to the private refineries at a concessionary rate pending when local production is increased to meet demand?

How come he also simply threw up his hands on the issue of corruption in the PPPRA, Customs, etc? Is there any attempt to aggressively reform and sanitize Customs and the Ports?

How come Sanusi and his cohorts are not insisting that the local (government) refineries must work and meet local demand?

How come that even with the current price of N141 per litre or so, they are not providing an explanation on the pricing of the petrol, diesel and kerosene that are still being refined by government refineries?

How come government is not giving specific targets in terms of infrastructure work to be achieved? (e.g. do something drastic if the quantity of megawatts does not get up to X by July 2012, or resign from office if additional 1,000 kilometres of federal roads are not tarred)

How come there's no attempt (even in the 2012 budget) to cut the cost of governance including personnel costs both in the executive and the legislature?

I am not against the removal of subsidy but it should be removed in a methodical, sensible and humane manner. The way it has been removed is too simplistic, lazy and even callous. The same that the planned purchase of 1,600 buses is simplistic, lazy and perfunctory.

I completely agree with Gbawe that the owners of Nigeria, are those from every corner of the nation, who come together to determine what direction the Nation must head in, without consulting we, the people. Beaf's attempt to turn this view into a tribal war is irresponsible and outright silly.

GEJ and his administration may very well have done themselves in and if care is not taken, the country will be destroyed in the next few days, at which time, the Nigerian masses or the said owners of Nigeria will get rid of GEJ and his administration.

What an incompetent government!! How can they time the removal of fuel subsidy in this manner? The whole action defies logic.

It is obvious that fuel subsidy benefits the rich and not the poor.  Imagine that between January and November of 2011, the foreign exchange (forex) sold to oil marketers was $8 billion and within the same period $8.2 billion was paid to the marketers as subsidy. The revenue from the oil sector within the period was just $200,000 higher!!!  The subsidy had to go, but the timing is dumb.

I will be proceeding to Qatar or the USA in the next few days - hopefully, I will return to a better Nigeria in a couple of weeks.  smiley

Good. It would mean that Okonjo Iweala's deceptive talk that "Government is still consulting" was to lull Nigerians into a false sense of security since they still went ahead with the 1st January 2012 target previously scheduled. Let us now see the real effect on Nigeria. Happy new year to you too.

http://saharareporters.com/news-page/nigeria-announces-removal-petrol-subsidy
Long term impact of fuel subsidy removal should be positive especially since diesel is not subsidized. Expect cost of taxi, bus rides, and okada rides to rise by 100%.

We need to watch Okonjo-Iweala very closely, she have been proven to be a liar and she appears to be implementing policies directed by the IMF. I don't trust that organization (IMF) because I do not believe that their interests are particularly in sync with those of Nigerian citizens.

My own reason for supporting the removal of fuel subsidy is that we are essentially broke, the subsidy was unsustainable, and we simply don't have the funding sources to implement the 2012 budget without the removal of the subsidy. Lets hope some of the savings from subsidy removal are directed towards the support of the Naira so that further devaluation of our currency becomes unnecessary.

The only consequence of rigging an election should have been a vigorous challenge at the court.
I agree with the above. This type of consequence is non existent in Nigeria as you know - the courts have been compromised and are just as corrupt as the legislative and executive branches. No Nigerian court has the guts to overturn a presidential election hence going to court is simply a waste of time.  just look at all the looters including ex governors who are walking around free in Nigeria and you'll get the point.

koruji: IBB single-handedly cancelled the fairest election in our history, but did you hear of any bombings? So I ask, what is the basis for violence in this case?
IBB is part of our problems in Nigeria and that is one of the reasons why we stoned him in Zaria a few years ago.  There should have been a massive  protest against  IBB's actions but the cowardice of those who needed to lead the protests prevented such acts.  We would have been better off if those affected the most had expressed their disgust towards IBB in a bold manner.

kuroji: A virtually dead man ruled this nation for almost 3 years, with his minions & wife taking over rulership, instead of the constitutionally designated official of the Federation, GEJ. Did you hear of any bombings? Or was that not grave enough for you?
kuroji, you are not making much sense. What more do you need before you get off your hinny and start demanding more from your leaders?  You've itemized enough reasons for Arab-type protest and resistance, but the only vigorous protest you people can muster is from the safety of the internet.  What else must be done to you to trigger the appropriate response? They loot your treasury, kill you with impunity, sell off your country's assets to their cronies, use your money to fly abroad when they are sick while you and your families die because you don't have enough money to pay for hospital admissions e.t.c.
