Major attacks
Prior to the clashes, many Muslim leaders and at least one military official had warned the authorities about Boko Haram. Those warnings were reportedly ignored. In Yobe state, fighters reportedly "used fuel-laden motorcycles" and "bows with poison arrows" to attack a police station.[ On 30 July, allegations were made that Yusuf himself was killed by Nigerian security forces after being taken into custody.

January 2010: Boko Haram struck in Borno State killing four people in Dala Alemderi ward in Maiduguri metropolis.

On September 7, 2010: Boko Haram freed over 700 inmates from a prison in Bauchi State.

December 2010: Boko Haram were blamed for a market bombing, following which 92 of its members were arrested by police.

January 28, 2011: The ANPP in Borno gubernatorial candidate was assassinated, along with his brother and four police officers.

March 29: The Police thwarted a plot to bomb an election rally in Maiduguri, Borno State. The threat was allegedly blamed on Boko Haram.

April 1: Suspected Boko Haram members attacked a police station in Bauchi (map). On April 9, a polling center in Maiduguri was bombed.

April 15: The Maiduguri office of the Independent National Electoral Commission was bombed, and several people were shot in a separate incident on the same day. Authorities suspected Boko Haram.

April 20: Boko Haram killed a Muslim cleric and ambushed several police officers in Maiduguri.

April 22: Boko Haram freed 14 prisoners during a jailbreak in Yola, Adamawa State.

February 8, 2011: Boko Haram gave conditions for peace. The radicals demanded that the Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, should step down from office with immediate effect and also allow members to reclaim their mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

9th May 2011: Boko Haram rejected an offer for amnesty made by the governor-elect of Borno state, Kashim Shettima

Aside this, Nigeria also witnessed spate of bombings in the past. For instance the then Niger Delta militancy also had its share of terrorist acts. As the conflict escalated, it led to a very disturbing national (even sub regional) security concerns.

The regional water ways in the Gulf of Guinea became increasingly risky for any form of business. Niger Delta militants were reportedly enlisted in a failed attempt to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang Nguema led government of Equatorial Guinea on the 17th of February 2009.

Politics › Maitasine Crisis In Kano, 4100 Dead-Millitary Crushed Group. But B'haram Thrives by nduchucks(op):
This Boko Haram crisis is overrated but rating could become very real given GEJ's fears, ineptitude, and outright cluelessness. The Maitasine religious group was far more organized and killed more people than Boko Haram will ever kill, yet they were promptly dealt witrh. The complete lack of decisive action against Boko Haram is making me think that GEJ is really working towards the destruction on this country. When is he and his agents going to protect Nigerians from these acts of violence?

Please  enjoy the excerp below:

The fear of bombs is the beginning of wisdom.

Instructively, the history of terroriism and religious fanatism in Nigeria, could be traced from Maitasine riots of the early eigthies. The religious sect was founded by late Malam Muhammadu Marwa alias Allah Ta-Tsine or Maitatsine.

With an ideology that was opposed to most aspects of modernization and to all Western influence. The group unleashed acts of terrorism against the state.

The sect also decried such technological commonplace as radios, wrist watches, automobiles, motorcycles, and even bicycles. Those who use these things or who read books other than the Qur'an were viewed as hell-bound.

The first Maitasine violence in Kano shocked many Nigerians to their marrow. In that crisis, 4,177 lives were lost. The Kano incident stands out for being the first religious crisis that took a huge toll on human lives and property.

Although there had been series of religious tensions and skirmishes across the country, one of which was the crisis witnessed in May 1980 in Zaria during which property belonging to mainly Christians were destroyed by some Muslims, few people could have imagined that differences in religion could lead to such wanton destruction of lives and property as witnessed in December 1980. But that was the scenario.

Members of the sect called the Maitatsine led by one Muhammadu Marwa, shot their way to notoriety when, seven months after the Zaria disturbances, they took to the streets proclaiming their brand of Islam to be superior to every other one, including Christianity, and in the process, initiated an SinParty of violence that claimed human lives and property.

Nonetheless, the December 1980 death of Maitasine in the hands of the military, marked the end of the sect.

However, three decades after this crisis, another group emerged from Northern Nigerian again. With almost a similar ideology, the group was founded in 2002 in Maiduguri by Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf.

In 2004 it moved to Kanamma, Yobe State, where it set up a base called "Afghanistan" used to attack nearby police outposts, killing police officers.

In Bauchi, the group was reported as refusing to mix with local people. The group includes members who come from neighbouring Chad and speak only in Arabic. Like its forebearer, Boko Haram did not leave any one in doubt, that it was poised to enlist Nigeria on the list of terrorist nations.

For instance, in July 2009, the Nigerian police started investigating the group following reports that the group was arming itself. Several leaders were arrested in Bauchi, sparking deadly clashes with Nigerian security forces which led to the deaths of an estimated 700 people

AjanleKoko:
If the Hausas were so smart, why do they keep whinging and crying about zoning and power shift? Why do they still rely desperately on rationed government jobs?

Right now, the Northerners are nowhere when it comes to the nation's economic might. Dangote is more of a Southerner these days, judging by all his business alliances. Politically, they've not only lost the grip on power, but are now being punished from within by their very own militant group.
Smart indeed undecided
I don't know how this thread became a debate on why Northerners are not 'smart', I thought the topic was about Nigerians in general. At any rate, no smart Nigerian should believe, for a moment, that most of the politically powerful Northerners are being punished from within by their own millitants. Those who are being punished are the innocent civilians, politician, emirs, and others who worked feverishly to keep PDP in power after the PDP gentleman's agreement on zoning was dishonoured by GEJ.

Many of you people do not realize that only Nigerians can develop Nigeria. Do you expect aliens from out of space to build this nation? What have you unpatriotic people done, personally, towards the development of this country? If you cannot point to anything tangible, then shame on you. You can't just fold your arms and expect other people to build your nation.

I share Paul's sentiments.

^^ And the answer to the question about why there are NO herder vs farmer conflicts in FAR NORTH, and in farms owned by the rich and powerful individuals and towns in Nigeria is . . . .? cheesy cheesy cheesy

Let me help you figure it out.

As long as there would be NEGATIVE consequences to the mallam and his herd, it won't happen. PERIOD.

Now, back to your "popularity contest".

I'm only interested in saving lives and protecting people, especially my people.

The mallam can take over Yorubaland for all I care.

Igboland is "no go area" to marauders, rapists and murderers. cool
Why must you people twist my arms to the point that I have to call you dummies na? You are asking why these conflicts do not happen in the far north? This is a joke right?

The far north is more of a desert, dummy. Where in the world are you going to find green grass for cattle which can sustain them for long! That is the reason why we travel down south to feed the cattle and sell them to you, dummy!

Nwannem, I hereby proclaim you the dumbest NL Ojuju of the month.

Politics › Re: Jtf Accuses Borno Elders Of Backing Boko Haram by nduchucks: 10:35am On Jul 15, 2011
This is ridiculous, I am beginning to suspect that this government and its agents including JTF do not want this Boko Haram conflict to end. Why are they making public statements to the effect that Borno elders back Boko Haram? These are the people who can help the government fish out Boko Haram members - the government should be cooperating with these Elders and not pi'ssing them off!

If the government and JTF are sure of their claims, why not round these elders up and lock them the hell up? By the time they are water boarded one or two times, preferably in a detention center far away from their region, they will start spilling the beans on Boko Haram. GEJ and his agents will turn our dear country into Iraq and Afganistan at the rate they are going.

Our people talk say, a o kin beru ori, ka fi fila de'idi (pardon grammer and spelling), meaning we no fit fear head so tay, make we come wear cowboy hat for yansh instead of head. Round them up already, we are at war!!!

wesley80:
Perhaps u're grossly uninformed or simply just a terrible analyst. MEND as we came to know it was brought together and given political teeth by -as we came to understand- Henry Orkar aka Jomo Gbomo, initially it was nothing but a bunch of home grown freedom fighters, cult and gang leaders and criminals operating independently with differing goals in the ND. While a number of them were genuinely interested in the well being of ND's, others were simply in it for the reward. Over time, a number of the genuine fighters realized they were only being used by Orkar and with their lives and the lives of members of their communities on the line, they reached a settlement that resulted in the training and empowerment of thousands of villagers who hitherto were rotting away in the creeks, earned the respect of oil companies that now GENUINELY view communities as stakeholders and automatically reduced Jomo Gbomo to throwing bombs in Abuja. Now depending on how u choose to look at it, this is a good deal of success for a ragtag army of village boys that had no 'Somali' training. You can sit there and call them names but it wasnt your neck that was on the line was it? and it wasnt your village and her defenceless inhabitants that were being destroyed were they? So how dare u? There was only so much these guys cld achieve and they did ok.
My friend, i have nothing against the North and i dont know what part of my comments so deceived you. BTW, you seem to pride yourself in your intelligence but so far there's yet to be a whisk of that coming from u on this thread so pls try n stay focused.
Mallam Wesley80, you forgot to name the real sponsors of MENDs, former and/or present Governors, Presidential advisers, Presidents lipsrsealed and other politicians, in your epistle above.

I mean just imagine this line of thinking.
Urban sprawl is taking up more land (former grazing lands), therefore Fulani herdsmen have no choice than to herd their cattle into farms, effectively turning farms of corn, yams and cassava into "green pastures".
Whatever happened to land ownership!
I admit that a lot of things are upside down in Nigeria, but land ownership and trespassing laws are simple and clear enough.
Let me ask ndu-chucks a question:
Why don't these fulani herdsmen go near Obasanjo farms?
I'm sure it is very green.  undecided
Your insensitivity and burying your head in the sand will not resolve any conflict. The answer to your silly question as to why the herdsmen don't go near Obasanjo's farm is that, the farm is not along the routes of the herdsmen - this is the same reason why they don't bring their cattle into the farms in your very own village. olodo, rakumin dajij.

The problem is lawlessness in Nigeria. There should be certain laws guarding both side of the coin.
I am not saying that farmers should not provide for themselves. They've been doing that for the past 100 years just as the herdsmen have been travelling through the said areas for 100 or more years. Trouble started only recently (past 20years or so) when the government ignored this conflict of interest and refused to do anything about it. Most of the farmers in question and the herdsmen are illiterates, further complicating the issue. I wish someone would tell me the government's stance on these issues. Bets are that the government officials have no clue what the solution should be.

@Ileke bebeidi, brutality cannot be condoned, my sister. We need to find a solution which would include mutual respect. It is brutal to attack farmers and equally brutal to attempt to snatch the way of life of a people without being sensitive to their needs.

You will be on highway carrying placards.

! I say plan, not law.

What are top three plans around which the parties can avoid each other in a confrontation going forward?

Plans! Plans!! Plans!!!
Finally, someone is asking for real solutions. Please note that the herdsmen have been transporting their cattle from Sokoto to PH, Kaduna to Lagos, e.t.c. and back, for ages. These people do not use compasses, yet they don’t get lost. What that means is that they have at a minimum, 3 to 4 well established routes which before, say 10years ago, have not been disturbed. Due to population growth and urban sprawl, the routes of the herdsmen and grassing areas have become farms.

In the maintime government officials continue to ignore the conflicts which the sprawls and population growth, coupled with insensitivity of the sprawlers, would cause.  The first step is to carry out a comprehensive survey and figureout where these established routes are located. The next step will be to establish rules and enforcement mechanisms which would be respected by all concerned parties.

You’ll have to kill all the herdsmen to make them give up their way of life. Imagine if someone tells you that you people can no longer drive your cars or walk from your homes to your offices because your roads were built on land belonging to some obscure people who recently moved to your area because of population growth and sprawl! Nevermind that your roads have been there for 100 years. Fair?

@Alh-Harem, MEND is much worse that hypocrites. That organization is nothing but thieves, oil bunkerers, kidnappers, and murderers of innocent Nigerians. If they were serious about the emancipation of Niger Delta, they would have stepped up their game, given the government's current predicaments.

wesley80:
There r better ways to convey a message than by sounding ridiculously callous. See how many followers u've made that barely understood what u meant! Any surprise that boko haram are bombing everything on site in the name of followership?
Concerning MEND, I think they've moved on. A couple of months ago I was about submitting a bid for a contract in one of the oil majors when a friend in their employ called me out and advised me to consider bidding for something else as i stood absolutely no chance, i asked him why and his answer was straight 4word; Tompolo had also submitted a bid!
These guys have been empowered and IMO have achieved something laudable, gone r the days when people in the delta were scorned at when they submitted bids, now they r a force to be respected and a number of them have legions of welders and other artisans under their employment. Some still obtain contracts and sell off, but all in all, its more of a plus than a minus considering these were contracts usually handed out to complete strangers in the past. So tell me, na who go throw the bombs?
Your own personal experience supports my initial post. The leaders of MEND like Tompolo do not really care about the emancipation of our people in ND, but about emancipating themselves from poverty. Go to Ogoni land today and you’ll still find fellow Nigerians living like animals – this is a disgrace to all Nigerians.  Your initial response to my post was imbalanced, I’m sorry to say, because of your prejudice against Northerners.  Calm down, reread my initial post, then read your response and you’ll quickly discover that you owe me an apology.  Since I’m anticipating that no apology would be forthcoming, I’ll simply call you olodo, in advance and issue a subsequent apology if I'm wrong.   smiley
