Politics › Re: Tinubu: US, UK Banks Release Accounts Details; Tinubu May Be Declared Wanted by nduchucks: 4:24pm On Sep 11, 2011
@Beaf, assuming that Tinubu is found guilty of operating those accounts while in office, what exact is the maximum jail term he would face. I suspect no jail term will be involved - is this just an attempt to prevent Tinubu from contesting as a Pres or VP in 2015? Methinks if Tinubu is not charged and convicted of a more serious crime, then this is a political witch hunt.

Haba after years of threatening this man, can't they find more serious crimes to charge him? EFCC and the code of conduct bureau must either be run by incompetent fools or these wild accusations against Tinubu have no validity or merit.

@jason123, I feel your pain my brother. Your concern is one of the reasons why I think we are better off as one nation.  The bloodshed that will accompany the breaking up of Nigeria will be more than devastating than that of the civil war.

My point has been with people who want her dismissed, suspended, or even fired before investigations are completed. Justice is never served with a rush to judgement, unless you have an ulterior motive.
naijaking, I admit that I overreacted because of my disappointment, I have edited my first post and the thread's title to appease you. I hope you are  big enough to admit that your post above does not make much sense. Ngozi's camp in their rebuttal stated that extensive investigations were conducted and completed, so why are you now claiming that people do not want these allegations investigated? Are you more knowledgeable than Madam Iweala on this issue?

I expect you of all people to be objective in these matters. Where is your outrage? Why are you willing to give these people an easy pass. You are the same persom who was defending Madam Ibru, even after she stole billions from customers, including the millions of naira you lost because of her activities? You refused to condemn her even after she was eventually convicted? I suspect you have more than an intimate relationship with these people.

Her camp responds thus:

This revelation obviously refers to a previous allegation about one of her brothers which was thoroughly investigated and discredited because it was found to have originated from vested interests. It is shocking that something that was discredited so long ago is being rehashed.

Caveat Emptor ko, seal of approval ni.  cheesy

I suppose this Caveat Emptor applies to all Wikileaks revelations regarding, Sanusi, along with the Wikileaks posts below:

“Mr. Fix-It” Tony Anenih, who “was indicted by the National Assembly for the sum of 300 billion Naira (approximately $2.4 billion) missing from Ministry of Works and Housing while he was the minister. The missing money is widely believed to have paid off 2003 elections "expenses," including to Balogun, in addition to lining his own pockets.

• Chief Olabode George, current PDP National Chairman (Southwest) is a close friend of President Obasanjo and a leading proponent of the Third Term Agenda. He is one of the people accused of financial recklessness in the affairs of the National Port Authority, where he was chairman when the financial scandals were allegedly committed. He was retired
from the Navy in the 1990s by the Babangida Administration after serving as military governor of Ondo State from 1987 to 1990 in addition to other military postings.

• Chris Uba, recently appointed to the PDP Board of Trustees, admitted rigging during the 2003 elections and attempted to kidnap the governor of Anambra state to try to collect payments for his efforts. Linked closely to several vigilante groups in the state, he is widely believed to be
responsible for the burning of many state government buildings in Awka, crimes that have yet to be solved.

• Edo State governor Lucky Igbenedion purchased a $6 million mansion in London in 2000 through a series of shell companies, a year after he was elected governor. He has two Ferraris on the premises. He also owns reputedly the most expensive residence in Abuja, estimated at $25 million
Delta State governor James Ibori owns two London estates. The properties were purchased for $3 million and $4 million, respectively, after Ibori was elected governor. Through a shell company registered to his London-based wife, he offered for public auction an ongoing supply of 6 million barrels of oil per month. When reporters confronted his wife, the shell companies abruptly changed their directors so that Ibori's wife was no longer listed.

• Rivers State governor Peter Odili has built an impressive portfolio from his corrupt dealings as governor of one of the oil-rich states in Nigeria since his first election in 1999. Beginning his political career as a medical doctor with a small private clinic in Port Harcourt, he now hosts
extravagant events and boasts that it would not have been possible "before he became governor." Further, he is widely suspected of being directly responsible for facilitating massive irregularities in both the 1999 and 2003 elections. His own state officials have claimed that Odili has employed militia groups, many of which are responsible for the continuing unrest in the delta region.

The ambassador said that that the biggest influence the United States could have on the situation in Nigeria was the “judicious use” of U.S. visa revocation for corrupt practices, under US law.

Nwannem, did you said you don’t trust me because tribal politics is involved in this matter?  You are the one introducing tribalism into this thread. I am only expressing my disappointment in a lady, who has been an idol worthy of respect and honour until this revelation. This wikileaks revelation, at the very least, should cause reasonable people to watch her very closely this time around. To be honest with you, what she is accused of doing is the order of the day in naija. I had assumed that this lady was above the act and I am simply expressing my disappointment, as you should.

I don’t care whether she is from the North or East, these corrupt leaders must be held to a high standard.  You should be calling for an investigation to uncover why this accusation, acknowledged by her, has been kept as a secret up till now. Who is covering up and not giving her the opportunity to clear her name?

A few days ago, we were told that Okonjo-Iweala vows to tackle corruption https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-755463.0.html .

The revelations below leaves a biiter taste in my mouth, I just lost my respect for this lady. She too is allegedly thief. I am beginning to wonder  whether her priority to pay down dubious debts obtained by dubious governments, was done in the best interest of Nigerians. All her activities should be watched very closely from now on.

As Minister of Finance under the government of Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s returnee Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, steered public contracts to her brother worth up to $50 million, with the help of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, yet another WikiLeaks US cable issued in 2006 says.
The contracts were said to have been awarded to the man, identified only as “JonJon,” for consulting work for the ministry.
The detailed cable, which spells out corruption allegations against a variety of powerful Nigerians, are contained in a cable in which the United States was considering response to the corruption machine in Nigeria.  Entitled “CORRUPTION: NIGERIA "IMPROVES" TO SIXTH-WORST IN THE WORLD, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?” it followed the release by Transparency International of its 2005 Annual Corruption Perceptions, and it was written by the Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. John Campbell.
It showed the ambassador considering using the tool of U.S. visa revocations under Presidential Proclamation 7750 to punish corrupt Nigerian public officials, after noting that President Obasanjos anti-corruption campaign was widely perceived to be nothing more than a political witch hunt by President Obasanjo, a view supported by examining cases targeted at high-level officials.
Mr. El-Rufai was himself one of those profiled in the cable, where he is identified as having been known to the Embassy eight years earlier “when he was homeless and seeking a loan to import a taxi from the UK.”

@Eko-ile, there is no need for juvenile name calling please: Do you or do you not dispute the following facts? Please note that facts are can always be disputed as routinely done in courts.

If the house will recall, Alhaji Musiliu Smith was the Inspector General of Police when the late Gani Fawehinmi sought an order of Mandamus compelling the IG to investigate Bola Ahmed Tinubu's whereabouts between 1982 and 1989, with specific regard to his claim to have graduated from the university of Chicago, from the court of the corrupt Justice Oguntade.

Oguntade refused to grant the order, with Fashola and Dapo Durosinmi-Etti acting as bag men for Tinubu to those who needed to be bribed, and Afikuyomi taking the fall. By the time the smoke cleared and the bank consolidation was over, Musiliu Smith was rewarded with the position of Chairman of Skye Bank PLC, a position he held until 2010.

I would have suggested that IMO government offer the officials with those vehicles a deal, wherein they pay only N3million for each such vehicle in their possession. Those cars are worth N4 - N8million on the average. Such a deal would have raised N300 - N500million naira for the government. That opportunity is not yet lost, the deal can still be offered in light of the fact that the government still owes car dealers N100million.

The cars that are not repurchased should be auctioned off to pay off the said loans and recover some of the waste. Good move by IMO state government.

@na_so

I want to share a little personal thought with you.
Today, in the course of my professional duties I ran into a Ghananian (an Ashanti), and we were reviewing a development plan here in the US. In this team, only both of us are blacks -Nigerian/US (me) and Ghanaian/US (he).
When he started to make his presentation, for some minutes, I lost concentration and went into deep thoughts.
What was I thinking about?
Well, he reminded me of another Ghanaian I met in graduate school. There is yet another Ghanaian I worked with some years back. They all behave the same way -VERY HARD WORKING, DISCIPLINED, PEACEFUL and AMBITIOUS. I then remembered how Ghanaians used to dominate strong positions in the Nigerian football league in the 80s and 90s. Even one of my lecturers at UNN was a Ghanaian. When I continued to think of these, it suddenly occurred to me that average Ghanaians are just like typical IGBO folks. We Ndigbo have far more in common with Ghanaians than with some groups within Southern Nigeria and Nigeria as whole!
Give me a Ghanaian anyday instead of some of the lazy folks in parts of SS.
The only fight Igbo will have over anything in SS is for Igbo territory. Whoever wants to join us has to put in an application which has to be studiously scrutinized before acceptance, because we can't drag alone dead woods! cool
To find out that a person with a advanced degree routinely lacks the ability to reason objectively and bases his thoughts on juvenile generalizations, is disappointing, to say the least. I always suspected that you suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), but your confirmation of the ailment's symptoms in your write-up above has confirmed my suspicion.

I though you had more in common with Jews, I suppose that is no longer the case since your interactions with a couple of Ghana folks were enough for your generalizations. olodo, ewu abriba.   cheesy
