Donald Duke for FCT Minister mikeansy, your post is disappointing. One would have thought by now, you would have understood that when Dede1's post is not overly complex and doesn't require the consultation of dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other research materials, it would have to contain some sort of sarcasm. oyb: sorry, but what you really seem to be saying is that the biafrans were lousy strategists oyb, the point you made is spot on, in my opinion as well. Many of the assumptions made by biafran leaders were critical success factors and competent leadership requires that before taking the steps leading to war, no effort should be spared towards ensuring that the assumptions do not turn out wrong, as they indeed turned out. I'm of the humble opinion that leaders who made these kinds of strategic blunder in addition to countless of other bad decisions, had no business leading. They did a great disservice to millions of dead women and children, to say the least. |

RichyBlacK: ndu_chucks,
You make a fundamental error to think that the human ability to plan is absolute. I do not believe that human ability to plan is absolute, that would be foolish. If the simultaneous declaration of independence by Western Nigeria was a critical factor as Eziachi stated, then the said leaders made a grave mistake to say the least, for not ensuring that their assumption was correct before making their own declaration. That's all I'm saying, nothing more, nothing less. I maintain that position |

Eziachi: Please tell me what is war plan that is not based assumption or possibility of a scenario because you can‘t be sure? Unless you have a concrete intelligence of your opponent which exist little in wars. Therefore, according to you, Churchill/the British assumption that America will join them initially against Germany in 1939 is their lack of preparedness and incompetence just because America refused to join or help, against their original assumptions. Eziachi, first let me say that I believe that you were a soldier that fought with courage and you sacrifised for your cause. That is very admirable. Many war plans as you mentioned are based on assumptions and uncertain scenarios. You stated that a critical assumption was made by your leaders that Western Nigeria would declare independence and the fact that it didn't happen was one of the main reasons why biafra lost. Your words: we fought to defend our self and made a huge mistake by assuming that our western Nigeria brothers will follow suit and declare independent of their own, but we got it totally wrong. My point that your leaders should have had enough intelligence or direct meetings with leaders of Western Nigeria before declaring independence, to ascertain that they will not be proceeding on a suicide mission, remains quite valid. A joint declaration of independence would have worked like a charm. I maintain that this bad assumption by your leaders shows the lack of preparedness and gross incompetence that led you to a senseless war. |

Eziachi: In war, you can plan all you like but unforeseen events will only determine the out come. We did not foresee the role foreign powers played and the extent they went, neither the role Western Nigeria played, it was in fact the biggest shock during the time.
we fought to defend our self and made a huge mistake by assuming that our western Nigeria brothers will follow suit and declare independent of their own, but we got it totally wrong. The bolded text above shows the lack of preparedness and gross incompetence of your leaders that led you on a senseless war, whose success depended on an assumption that Western Nigerians will declare independence of their own. If this was a critical success factor, your leaders should have had the assurance from Western Nigeria than they will also declare their own independence. This stupidity was a major factor in the loss of lives of millions of people. Quite sad. |

df2006: ndu chucks, this is what u wrote above, stating that the people who have been looting from nigeria are the enemies of nigeria and they are from every part of nigeria, true that, you also call them the thieving elite, but then again you contradict your self by your post below
now it seems, you have not made up, your mind on who exactly are the thieving elites, of whom danjuma is one. thieving elites= traitors. like eoyad called him, regardless of wether they are from the same region. but the inference from your quote above is that, a leader from ones region is esteemed, wether he does right or wrong. just like gomwalk is an esteemed leader to edoyad like you said, but was executed for taking part in a coup. ibb abacha and the rest of the thieving elites, are esteemed leaders to you, even after they have improverish nigerians to their knees.
you see how your mind works which I assume is the average mind of a hausa fulani, this is the re-education that kusamotu is trying to tell you to get, remove the slave mentality your leaders have put on you. not how to read and write. df2006, Its a complete waste of time to have a logical discussion with a dimwit that cannot distinguish between sarcasms and other forms of expression. Same is true for those who take statements out of context and attempt to use them to make cheap points. I will therefore give you the best answer for a fool in this instance. df2006, crawl back into the hole from which you came out. olodo |

Katsumoto: Copycat syndrome Laziness Focusing on vocations that only bring financial rewards - Everyone wants to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, banker, etc. Vacationing in mainly anglo-saxon nations (UK, US). Nigerians go on holiday just to shop. While you will see many Nigerians on Oxford street in London or on 5th Avenue in New York, you will rarely find them in the Louvre or the Antonin Dvorak Museum in Prague. When you find Nigerians in other parts of the world, they are there for economic reasons (buying merchandise or economic migrants).
One dimensional recreation (having multiple girlfriends and children) - Europeans, Aussies, etc travel the world backpacking, learning about other cultures, and also volunteering. Our selfish mind-set stops us from exploring the world. I know people who can not leave Nigeria for more than 3 days because they will be cheated by others in business transactions, etc. What kind of a life is that?
Take a look at Eastern europeans who are bilingual, appreciate art and classical music but are not so wealthy. By focusing only on money and its concommitant ability to make us stand out in society results in generations who are rich but unenlightened. Not being charitable.
There are many other reasons but the above easily come to mind. When we change our mindset as a people, our country will be better. Profound! Since there is no massive social engineering program in the works, capable of reengineering the Nigerian mind, beginning with primary school children, should one assume that Nigerians are doomed. |

Katsumoto: Ndu_Chuks You are right about the above but let us not ignore certain facts. Nigeria finds itself in this predicament because there are thieves in all nooks and crannies in all parts of the country. However, the Northern elite has been able to frustrate the ambitions of genuine leaders from the south by continually keeping the Northern people uneducated so as to use them as pawns in various uprisings and engaging non-progressive people from the South. The day that a majority of the Northern people become educated, enlightened, and independent like their Southern counterparts, Nigeria will be the better for it.
But as long as unqualified and often uneducated people from the North continue to lord over better qualified candidates from the South in all spheres of government (military included), Nigeria will remain as it is or may even descend into chaos. So before you lay the blame on crooks who come from all over Nigeria, try to put into consideration the severe imbalances in the nation. I'm glad you do not disagree with my statement. Let me also point out that I have not ignored the issues you raised. One thing to note however is that, in the scenario you mentioned above where you allege that the Northern elite has been able to frustrate the ambitions of genuine leaders, there have always been elites from West/East/ and South who assisted and enabled the frustration of the said ambitions. The Northern elite has never been able to carryout any "political coup" without the active participation of their non Northern counterparts. I also fully agree with you that there are several imbalances in the nation that need to be addressed very urgently. The point I was making is that to see Northerners, Easterners, Westerners, or Southerners as the sole cause of our problems is quite naive and myopic. Finally I'll rephrase your statement above as follows: "The day that a majority of the Nigerians become educated, enlightened, and independent like their Southern counterparts, Nigeria will be the better for it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that the majority of any region in Nigeria is educated. |

"Justice is served" three years after Yar Adua became President coincindental with a power vacuum , allied with a desperation to ensure that Jonathan has no real executive power, and you talk about not understanding my "outrage"? I am not outraged at all. I am only suspicious at "justice" that seems politically expedient rather than sincere. I don't see how you can wonder why sane Nigerians would be suspicious of the timing of "justice" when those who want to prevent Jonathan gaining power have shown do-or-die desperation plus total disregard for decorum and decency. Gbawe, you are not party to the lawsuit in question and I understand your suspicion. The presidential candidate who filed the lawsuit feels otherwise. Here is an extract of a their issued statement: Dr. Nwankwo and our Party, the Peoples Mandat Party (PMP) went to the court of Appeal to annul the election of President Umaru Yar'Adua and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, based on the electoral inconsistencies and irregularities that brought them to power. We accept this ruling of the Supreme Court for the Appeal Courts mother of all legal-politico fight. As a party of veteran political street fighters, we are cognizant of but not bothered by the predictable multifaceted political calculations and intrigues our adversaries will bring to the arena. Gbawe: Spot on. Removing Yar Adua , as a result of a competent Court of law overturning his election victory, means that Jonathan will automatically be made redundant as well since the VP is on a joint ticket with the President. OBJ caused all these problems with his deliberate poor choice of President and Vice President. In Jonathan , OBJ chose a man who , even with ultimate power, will always find it difficult to command respect from those he leads without the deployment of folks like himself and Danjuma.
OBJ chose a man (Jonathan) who will always need himself and the other self-serving destroyers of Nigeria (Anenih, Danjuma , et al) for acceptance . He thought he had done similar with Yar Adua but was foiled by the 'esprit de corps' with which the North operate i.e , as a principle, they always fervently support their own when push comes to shove. Callous and self-serving machinations from a callous and supremely self-serving individual (OBJ). I am not a fan of Jonathan's leadership style but I feel OBJ , as usual, has used another less-discerning pawn (like Ribadu, El Rufai, Fani-Kayode , et al) to actualise his nefarious agenda. I feel sorry for Jonathan. I sincerely hope he fares better than others who have been used and dumped by OBJ. Gbawe, if justice is served by any verdict which nullifies the 2007 presidential election, an election that you yourself are implying that is rigged and engineered by Obasanjo, then I don't understand your outrage. Its about time that we started to applaud the application of rule of law and let it take its cause before screaming, Northern agenda. |

Investors move monies in seconds to diferent countries for safety.
Since his counterpart brother from Kastina state is running the country on proxy then can anyone tell me what is wrong with the country in Sanusi Lamido's opinion?
The irony is that only we southerners worry about those sort of issues, as far our Northern brothers are concern, what is the problem?
By way of illustration, there is Governor in the 80's from Kano state called Bakin Zuwo. When the military struck in December 1983, there was a rumour that they found about N5 million naira ( equivalent today' N1.250BILLION) in his safe at the governor's house or lodge. The Military guys were alledge to question him,
Military: Governor, where did you get this money from?
He replied
Bakin Zuwo; He asked them what was the problem?, This is government money, I am the Governor, this is the government house ?
To our brothers in the North, Governace, money, religion can be done as the leader wishes. They swear by Allah and don't uphold the tenent of Islam. They lie barfaced like their master Yar A'liar.
What also worry me about Sanusi lamido is that he is one of the bright star in that Region and he still behaving like a PDP politician. Maybe because they appointed him, it is rubbing off on him, that one day he may declare his intention like SOLUDO to become the Governor of Kano state even though his royal entitlement is only to the crown of Kano city.
Certainly Sanusi need to used his medication as prescribed by the shrink for thinking or saying that the country economy is not or will not be affected by the political instability. No serious business person risk their money in a politically uncertain country or economy, and that is Economics 101, even Market women understand this. vigasimple, To say that I'm a bit disappointed in you and your post above would be a gross understatement.
