I went to my sister's house yesterday at airport road Lugbe in Abuja, I was forced to watch some nollywood movies like two of them before waiting patiently for those super eagles who disgraced themselves by being trashed by the Morrocans at the CHAN Final despite the former vice president Atiku Abubakar watching it. so as we were watching it " The Jewelry and one other " if you see how my sisters and i were predicting the outcome of the movie to the extent that we were all correct every time we predicted. My questions is that 1. Why has nollywood lost its value 2. Why are all these scripts writers writing rubbish stories. 3. Why are they always giving us a happy ending movies because that's not how it goes in the real life. 4. Why do all ghosts in the movie keep revenging for their death I can go on an on Please nairalanders share your thought on the degradation on naija nollywood. |

By Onozure Dania A drama played out at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, when a lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, engaged his colleague, Luke Aghanenu, in a tussle over legal representation of four companies allegedly belonging to a former first lady, Patience Jonathan. The companies, Pluto Property and Investment Company, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Ltd and Avalon Global Property Development Ltd, pleaded guilty to laundering $15 million last September. Ozekhome while claiming he was validly appointed to represent the companies, prayed the court to nullify the guilty plea entered by the companies on the basis that they were not given fair hearing. Mr. Aghanenu also appeared before the judge saying he was briefed by the companies to represent them. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had arraigned the companies alongside a former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to former president, Goodluck Jonathan, Waripamo Dudafa; a lawyer, Amajuoyi Briggs; and a banker, Adedamola Bolodeoku on a 15 count charge of money laundering. Messrs. Dudafa, Briggs, and Bolodeoku pleaded not guilty to the 15-count charge. Yesterday, Aghanenu filed a motion for change of counsel, praying the court to hold that he was validly appointed by the companies’ directors to represent them. ABUJA —Following reports of alleged disappearance of $44 million from the vaults of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, the House of Representatives on resumption of plenary for 2018, yesterday, resolved to probe the newly appointed Director-General, Mr. Rufai Abubakar. The House also resolved to investigate Abubakar’s nationality, citizenship and competence which came to question after his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari. The planned probe was sequel to the consideration and adoption of a motion under matters of urgent public importance titled “Need to investigate the alleged carting away of $44 million from NIA and the issues surrounding the appointment of its new DG”, sponsored by Hon. Diri Duonye (Bayelsa State). It will be recalled that reports of the alleged missing money flooded the media at the weekend even as criticisms had continued to trail Abubakar’s appointment. While moving the motion, Duonye said that the disappearance of the $44 million two days after the assumption of office of the new DG had brought to mind the Ikoyigate scandal which engulfed the sacked former DG of the agency. He also contended that the manner of the appointment of the new NIA boss has painted a poor picture of national security and diminished the reputation of the agency in the eyes of the Nigerian public and the international community. He said: “Notes that the President and Commander-in-Chief recently approved the appointment of a new Director-General, National Intelligence Agency, NIA in the person of Rufai Abubakar. “Concerned that the identity, nationality, citizenship and even competence of the new DG has become a subject of public speculation and controversy. Disturbed that the NIA has again been visited by another scandal merely two days after assumption of office by the new DG where $44 million cash in the agency’s vaults in Abuja was allegedly carted away. “Aware that the nation is yet to recover from the shock of the Ikoyigate Safe House scandal involving $43.4 million, N23.2 million and 27, 800 pounds, the report of which is yet to be made public. Further disturbed that the issues of controversy over the appointment and the cash scandals paints a poor picture of our national security and diminishes the reputation of the agency in the eyes of the Nigerian public and the international community.” In adopting the motion, the House mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to investigate the matter and report back to the House within two weeks. Fresh efforts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to re-impose a suspension order on the accounts of former First Lady Mrs. Patience Jonathan and her relatives have suffered a setback as Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos on Monday struck out an application for an interim forfeiture order brought before it by the anti-graft agency. The EFFCC had filed an application for interim order of forfeiture agianst the accounts of Mrs. Jonathan and her siblings but her lawyers led by Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN) opposed the application based on the fact that similar applications were pending before other courts in Abuja, which they claimed amounted to forum shopping and judicial abuse of court process. The team of lawyers which also included Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), and Charles Ogbolu submitted attachments to prove that the same process was currently before other courts of co-ordinate jurisdiction, including the applications before Justice Binta Nyako and Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, both of the Federal High Court Abuja. It was based on the evidence of multiplicity of an action provided by Mrs. Jonathan’s lawyers that Justice Olateregun rejected EFCC application for an interim order of forfeiture. It would be recalled that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja had last December lifted an order made on May 30, freezing 16 bank accounts linked to wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience. Justice Nyako in her ruling ordered the lifting of the freezing order that barred Mrs. Jonathan, her relatives and 10 organizations linked to her from accessing the accounts containing aggregate sums of $5.8million and N3.5billion. The ruling followed an application that Mrs. Jonathan and the 10 companies filed to challenge an ex-parte interim freezing order earlier obtained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Listed as applicants with Mrs. Jonathan, in the application, are the Incorporated Trustees of Ariwabai Aruera Reachout Foundation, Pagmat Oil and Gas Nigeria Limited, Flinchley Top Homes Limited, Incorporated Trustees of Women for Change and Development Initiative Nigeria, Transocean Property and Investment Ltd, Seagate Property Development Investment Company, Globus Integrated Services and Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited. Justice Nyako upheld the applicants that the interim forfeiture order had elapsed and could not be renewed by the EFCC. source:https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/01/lagos-high-court-strikes-efcc-forfeiture-application-patience-jonathan/ |

Akure —GOVERNOR Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has warned that his administration will no longer tolerate any action of brigandage by the Fulani herdsmen in the state. He said this following killings, rape of wives and daughters of farmers and destruction of several acres of farmlands in Ondo state by the rampaging herdsmen. Akeredolu, who warned that the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on criminal elements, said “we will not tolerate any act of brigandage. We will defend the right of our people to engage in farming without let or hindrance of any sort.” He said this during the flag off of the National Egg Production Scheme, NEPRO, by the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh at Aaye community in the ljare area of the state. Promising to protect citizens with “such fervour as expected of true representatives”, the governor said his government will sanction with “impassioned severity any acts which seek to tilt the balance of harmonious coexistence in the state towards anarchy.” While describing as unfortunate the recurrence of clashes between farmers and herdsmen, Akeredolu said “security forces have been fully mobilised to prevent the nefarious activities of nation wreckers in our state.” He lamented that “our state has had her share of the crisis but not on the horrendous scale whose odious effect continues to reverberate throughout the country.” He, however, assured that “our administration is taking proactive steps to ensure that this obnoxious phenomenon is nipped in the bud. “While we encourage all those with legitimate intentions to visit our space, we intend to clear the doubt of anyone who may wish to perpetrate crime under nebulous guises.” “We, therefore, enjoin our people to go about their normal businesses and report, promptly, any suspicious movement of undesirable elements in their communities. All of us owe our country a duty to ensure peace while not ignoring issues of justice and equity”, he said. Akeredolu said a proposed N42 billionn egg powder factory would be set up in Emure area of the state and is billed to kick off on February 22 this year. Earlier, the Agriculture Minister , Audu Ogbeh said the scheme is a public-private partnership initiative designed to create jobs for youths in Nigeria. Ogbeh said: “We have neglected agriculture for too long because of oil and gas. Now, our youths are jobless because we have imbibed the culture of doing nothing. Our youths walk into voluntary slavery in Libya, South Africa and other countries in the world because no other sector can provide the jobs agriculture could provide.” A cheque of N564 million was presented to 135 farmers during the flag-off ceremony. The Taraba State Governor , Darius Ishaku , has said any blackmail and propaganda employed by cattle breeders to turn themselves into victims will fail , saying the herdsmen are the killers and not victims. Ishaku statement is coming on the heels of the comment by his Benue State counterpart , Samuel Ortom , that the claim by the herdsmen that some state governments were arming militias to attack them was a lie. The apex body of Fulani cattle herders , the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria , in an earlier press conference on Sunday, had said the governments of Benue , Taraba states and others were sponsoring a hate campaign against herdsmen and also arming ethnic militias to kill them. The National Secretary of MACBAN, Usman Ngeljarma , spoke for the group in Abuja on Sunday. The MACBAN secretary said , “ It is no longer hidden that some state governments are sponsoring ethnic militias against our people , recruiting and arming locals to kill our people and rustle their livestock as seen recently in Benue and Taraba states. ” But the Taraba State governor , who spoke through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity , Mr . Bala Abu , said the Miyetti Allah was trying desperately to turn the truth upside down. “ The people who were given mass burial were not the Fulani. National television stations and newspapers published the story . No single Fulani man was killed ; instead , they ( Fulani) were the killers. “ I challenge them to come out with evidence against the governor that he is training ethnic militia against the Fulani. They should also name the location where the training is taking place so security agencies can move in to effect arrest. “ We are aware of their plot to stop the implementation of the Taraba State Open Grazing Prohibition Law which is due to commence soon , but the governor won ’ t be deterred in his quest to bring peace to the state, ” he said. The Senior Special Assistant to the Taraba State Governor on Public Affairs , Emmanuel Bello, in an email to The PUNCH , also said the government had not established any militia camp anywhere , as the governor believed in peace. “ The Lau crisis is under serious investigations to establish the remote and immediate causes . The truth will unravel everything with time , “ he said. Also , the Benue State governor in a statement by his Media Adviser , Mr . Tahav Agerzua , denied that militias arrested by the military were recruited and trained by the state government. The statement read in part , “ Governor Ortom is widely recognised for his disarmament policy which brought the amnesty programme , leading to the recovery of about 700 arms and ammunition with over 800 youths laying down their weapons to embrace the programme. “ It is also on record that the present administration inherited the Taraba State Civilian Joint Task Force from the previous government but later proscribed it. “ The Benue State Government believes in the use of conventional security agencies to protect the people . ” “ Even in the face of renewed killing of innocent people by herdsmen in the Logo and Guma local government areas, Governor Ortom did not let the people resort to self - help . The governor acted swiftly to get the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari for the deployment of more troops in troubled parts of the state. ” Source:http://punchng.com/fulani-herdsmen-are-killers-not-victims-taraba-govt/ |
