Crime › Olukere of Ikere-Ekiti, 5 others sent to prison over alleged murder by neolboy(op): 9:20pm On Jan 05, 2018
The Olukere of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Ganiyu Obasoyin, was on Wednesday remanded by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for alleged murder.

He was arraigned in connection with violence which erupted shortly after he inaugurated his hotel located in Gbemisola area of the town on Friday.

Suspected thugs vandalized the hotel over a statement made by Obasoyin which they believed was against the interest of a governorship aspirant who hails from the town.

Obasoyin’s loyalists allegedly launched a reprisal attack on those identified as the perpetrators on Monday which claimed the life of one Kolade Adefemi.

Others charged with the Olukere on an order to remand filed by the Commissioner of Police were Ajewole Sunday, Adetowoju Bode, Kayode Michael, Olowolafe Tola and Aluko Taiwo.

According to the remand order form marked MAD/181fk/17, the accused persons were charged with conspiracy, attempted murder of Ayodele Osanyinbola and murder of Kolade Adefemi.

The offences are punishable under Section (1) and 319 (1) of Criminal Code Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State 2012 within Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District on or about the 25th December, 2017.

Defence counsel, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, urged the court to grant bail to the accused persons.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, opposed the bail application and pleaded that the court granted the remand order request.

Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye refused the bail application and ordered the accused persons to be remanded in prison pending the issuance of legal advice on the case.

Adegboye adjourned the case till 8th of January, 2018.
Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Morakinyo Ogele has condemned the arrest, detention, arraignment and remand of Olukere and accused the Police of bias and doing the bidding of the state government.

Ogele, an Ikere indigene, said Obasoyin was victimised for declaring during the commissioning of his hotel that “Ikere has no candidate yet for the 2018 governorship election.”

He said: “The offence of the Olukere was that he declared that Ikere has no candidate yet for next year’s governorship election while declaring his hotel open and the role of the Commissioner of Police in this matter does not reflect unbiased policing.

“I see no reason why the hotel should be destroyed and at the same time charging the Oba to court. Those who attacked his hotel aimed for his life and the role of the government is condemnable.

“There is a criminal alliance between the Police, the government and an indigene of Ikere in the whole episode.”

Politics › Slave Trade: We Are Not Responsible - Libyan Government by neolboy(op): 7:11am On Dec 02, 2017
Following the pool of reactions trailing the alleged slave market in Libya, the Libyan government has finally opened up, saying that there is a campaign of calumny against its government.

The Charge d’Affaires/Ambassador-Designate of Libya to Nigeria, Dr Attia Alkhoder, who spoke with some select government-owned media in Abuja, said the press conference was coming “at a time of fierce media and political campaigns against Libya, claiming that there is human trade market in its territory.”

The Libyan envoy said “the claim followed media assumption carried out by the Cable News Network (CNN) channel of America and political comments follow it.”

Recall that there were media reports last week about Nigerians being sold off in Libya at a paltry sum of $400.
The development generated public outcry, with the Charly Boy-led group, OurMumuDonDo, occupying the Libyan Embassy located within the Asokoro district of Abuja on Thursday.

But Alkhoder said “It seems barraging in relation to smuggling them to their destination (Europe) as immigrants not as slaves. The barraging is about the cost of transporting them to Europe, not capture their freedom in order to savage them.”

He however said the Government of National Accord of Libya renewed its condemnation of the criminal practice of trading and trafficking of human beings on all levels, be it a national, regional or international.

“We would like to confirm that any deed that happens to immigrants right is not more than individual action and not the practice of Libyan people. We condemn and reject in totality, the criminal practice of trading and trafficking of human beings on the basis that any relation with immigrants should be conceded with human dignity.

“The Government of National Accord wonders at the fierce and blind campaigns that were carried by the international media and participation of some political officials of friendly countries who should be aware of the immigrants’ situation, and the exceptional condition.

“In Libya, what worries us deeply is the objectives of this campaign which was carried by countries that reject accepting immigrants and do not assist to bear any cost of this phenomena which Libya is most harmed by. It constitutes danger to its security, social constructions and loads on its initial weak economy.

“Libya renews its call to put an end to exploitation, suffering of the ambitious African man looking for better life in Europe and human trafficking, right from the country of source, route and target country.

“Libya calls to initiate international campaign to put an end to these phenomena by providing security, border control to end Libyan crisis, unify its government institutions and end the transition system that contribute a lot in the weakening control of territory, hence allow for smugglers to be more active on their illegal activities,” Alkhoder said.

The Libyan envoy also said the Libyan authority had immediately instructed the relevant agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation on the criminal claim according to the Libyan law and reveal its findings to local and international community, apprehend and punish persons responsible for it, be it human trafficking of immigrants or human trading.

“Libya considers such matter, if accurate, is a result of illegal immigration. Libya is harmed by it, she rejects being held responsible.

Solving the issue of illegal immigrants is a collective responsibility to the countries of origin, transit and destination. Moreover, Libya spends a lot of money to construct and manage camps to accommodate the immigrants and facilitate their voluntary return to their countries.

“Libya emphasises that the phenomenon of illegal immigration and its outcomes needs serious coordination of international efforts to stop it. Therefore, the need for practical and effective measures between the countries of origin, transit and destination, also, international and regional organization concerned,” Alkhoder added.

The Libyan government further said supporting the Libyan authority with technical and logistical needs in order to control its southern border since Libya is the major route for immigration across the Mediterranean Sea was necessary.

It urged the European Union and the international community to cooperate with the countries of origin to establish developing permanent projects to stop the phenomenon and its outcome as contained in Tripoli declaration of November 22-23, 2006, on immigration and development.

The envoy also said assisting Libya to meet the cost for the immigrant camps and support the construction and empowering of security outfits is also necessary.

Politics › Jonathan Thought I Kidnapped Chibok Girls — Shettima by neolboy(op): 8:30am On Dec 01, 2017
ABUJA—IT was another period of evaluation of Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidency in Abuja, yesterday, as dignitaries, including the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, and governor of Borno State and Chairman, Northern Governors Forum, Kashim Shettima, berated the former president for squandering his goodwill on the altar of inexperience and tribal politics.

Both men spoke at the unveiling of the book, “On a Platter of Gold – How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria,” written by an ex-Minister of Youths and Sports in the Jonathan administration, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

Shettima, who chaired the occasion, was the first to fire a salvo, saying in spite of “Jonathan’s fairytale rise to power, his sheer display of bad governance, lack of political sagacity and will power, he squandered the array of goodwill he commanded and subsequently got humiliated out of office.”

Shettima also took a swipe at the ex-president for surrounding himself with religious bigots and tribal warlords who made him believe that the Chibok girls’ abduction was a hoax.

“Sadly, Borno was the epicentre of the crisis that engulfed the Jonathan administration. This is the second book I am reading on the Jonathan saga.

‘’I think President Jonathan is essentially a decent person, an unsophisticated country politician caught up in the vortex of power politics in Nigeria.

“When the Chibok girls saga started, they made the president to believe that there was no abduction; that the Chibok girls were kidnapped by the governor of Borno State ostensibly to embarrass the Jonathan administration and he believed that line of story.

Jonathan wanted me out, surrounded himself with bigots

“There was a time he wanted to remove me at all costs. In the Federal Executive Council, they were all speaking in the same tone that this Borno governor must be removed for embarrassing the government; that I was the problem.

‘’Two Nigerians stood out. He sought the opinion of Mohammed Adoke Bello, the then Attorney General. Adoke told him that ‘Mr President, you have no power to remove even an elected councillor’.

‘Then he sought the opinion of another Senior Advocate Of Nigeria SAN, in his team, the Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki. And Turaki also told him that ‘Mr President, you have no power to remove a sitting governor’. And that was how the matter died.

Jonathan told me oil business, too oily -Saraki

On his part, Senate president, Bukola Saraki, said while Jonathan was not essentially a bad man, his lackadaisical attitude to issues of governance gave him away as one who took governance with unseriousness.

“I like to share one or two things that will probably summarize the former President Jonathan. I remember when I was then senator and I came across this issue of fuel subsidy and the way the country was losing close to N1.3 trillion.

“In the history of this country, I don’t think of any singular kind of level of corruption as huge as that. I had a motion already that I wanted to present on the floor of the Senate but I felt as a member of the ruling party at that time, it was only proper I discussed it with the President (first) maybe some action could be taken so that I could step down the motion.

‘’I booked an appointment to see Mr. President. I went with my paper and I started with the background of how people bring in petroleum products. I said Mr. President, in the past people used to get award letters from NNPC to bring in PMS, DPK, and make 10, 20 per cent profit.

‘’I said sir, they have taken it to another level, now; they get an order to bring in products, they do not want to make 10, 20 per cent any more. They will get an offer to bring in a cargo of 20,000 litres they will bring in 5,000 to be stamped for 20,000 and instead of making 10 per cent, they make ten times the amount.

“I was telling the President, thinking the President will get very agitated, but he said, ‘Senator Saraki, you know, this oil business is very oily.’

“I was stunned and taken aback but in a way, that was Jonathan; in a sad way that was who he is.”

And if you look at the second encounter I will recollect was the day I decided I was going to contest to be President.
‘’I felt that I did not want Jonathan to hear it as news, I booked an appointment to see him. I didn’t know what I was thinking that day. I went to the Villa, he said ‘come in, come in, how can I help you?

‘’I looked at the President of a third world country and said Mr. President I came to tell you that I am going to be contesting for your seat. Jonathan looked at me and said, ‘oh, okay, good luck, good luck..’ If it were any other person may be I would not have left the Villa that day but that again sums up Goodluck Jonathan.

‘’I think it is we, Nigerians, that produce the kind of leaders we get. No matter what you say about him, I don’t think he was someone who was desperate for power, he was not someone that was prepared for leadership, yes by misfortune or fortune I keep on saying, we all know the right things but we don’t do it, we find ourselves sometimes blaming individuals, blaming others than ourselves.”

National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on his part, expressed optimism that the book would provoke more discourse with regards to the events of the ‘Jonathan years’.

Kwara State governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, said: “Nigerians often overlook history. Nigeria’s history, like others, often repeats itself. The actors might differ, plots might change, the triggers different, but we need to comprehend the phase of our history as captured by Bolaji Abdullahi, for in doing that, we get a strong awareness of what is to come”.

Author of the book, Bolaji Abdullahi, who is currently the National Publicity Secretary of the APC said, the 12-chapter “On a Platter of Gold is part history, part political thriller, answered many of the often-asked questions about Jonathan’s incredible rise to the highest political office in the land and his unprecedented electoral defeat in 2015″.

The event attracted other dignitaries including a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore, seasoned journalists, lawmakers and members of the academia.

Politics › We Don't Have Maina's Name On Our Payroll- Finance Minister by neolboy(op): 12:44pm On Nov 30, 2017
ABUJA-IT was a swath of counter accusations at the continued investigative hearing by the ad-hoc Committee on the Disappearance,re-appearance and reinstatement of embattled former boss of Presidential Task Force on Pension Reform Team Abdulrasheed Maina on Monday.

The Finance Minister,Kemi Adeosun told a bewildered Committee members that Maina’s name was not in the FG’s pay roll.

The investigative hearing which started at precisely 10.25am after the opening prayer by the Chairman, Rep Ali Madaki, APC, Kano took a twist when the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior in his submissions declared that he got instructions to reinstate Maina from the Office of the Head of Service to the Federation.

This declaration did not go down well with the HOS, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita as she immediately countered his position saying:

“This is not quite correct to put it mildly
At this point, the Chairman ordered that she should be placed on oath.

Also, the Accountant General to the Federation, AGF, Ahmed Idris told the Committee that the last salary Maina earned was in February, 2013.

The minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun also corroborated the position of her AGF, saying:
“Maina is not in FG’s pay roll and his biometric was not even captured. Details soon….

Politics › You Are Welcome To Graze In Kogi State- Yaya Bello To Fulani Herdsmen by neolboy(op): 6:29am On Nov 30, 2017
LOKOJA— Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has kicked against the anti-grazing laws enacted by some of his colleagues in Benue and Taraba states, saying herdsmen were welcome to graze in any part of the state.

Governor Bello stated this during an emergency state security stakeholders’ meeting attended by traditional rulers, Fulani settlers, political administration and security personnel over incessant clash between Fulani herdsmen and farmers.

Bello added that the herdsmen can call their kinsmen displaced in other states to Kogi State.

The traditional ruler of Elete, Chief Ahmed Aku, who was kidnapped last year by herdsmen, had advised the governor to follow the example of Benue and Ekiti governors.

However, Bello responded passionately, saying, “I will not enact any law to stop Fulani herdsmen from coming to Kogi State. I will not be part of any law that will forbid them from carrying out their normal business in Kogi State.

“Why don’t we develope a law that will make us live together harmoniously and tap from our different economic values?

“The next ‘oil’ this country is rediscovering now is agriculture. So if you don’t want anybody to disrupt the farms, I beseech you to also allow the Fulani carry out their businesses.”

… reads riot act to monarchs, LG bosses
The governor also threatened to dethrone any traditional ruler whose domain was used as a battle ground between farmers and herdsmen.

His words: “We will dethrone any traditional ruler of the land where such occurred; including removing any administrator of such local government—appointed or elected.”

Bello directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure the Fulani were integrated into the traditional council area of all the local government areas of the state.

He ruled: “There must, henceforth, be a representative of Fulani in the local traditional council. This must also be replicated at the area traditional council, while the Secretary to the State Government must see that a Fulani representative is present at the state council.

“This will ensure that the Fulani are aware of, and are part of decision making in the state.”

He also directed his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Jerry Moodart, to commence the process of taking census of Fulani resident in all the 21 councils in the state.

Politics › My Support For Adesina’s Afdb Presidency Shows I Belong To Everybody –buhari by neolboy(op): 4:41pm On Nov 29, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his support for the President of the African Development Bank , Dr . Akinwumi Adesina , despite serving as minister in the Goodluck Jonathan administration , further confirmed his remarks at his inauguration on May 29, 2015 that he belongs to everybody and to nobody in particular.

Buhari said this while interacting with the Nigerian community in Abidjan , Cote d’Ivoire , where he is attending the 5 th European Union - African Union (EU - AU ) Summit.

The President was reacting to Adesina ’s gratitude to his administration for supporting him to get the job , leading to his becoming the first Nigerian to head the continental bank since it was set up in 1964.

He said , “ The President of the African Development Bank forgot to mention that he was serving in the PDP government as minister , but all the same , I recommended him for the AfDB job.

“ I think it emphasised what I said during my swearing- in that I ’m for everybody , I ’m for nobody . As long as you are a Nigerian , be prepared to benefit from me.”

Adesina , in his remarks , noted that the economy picked up soon after Buhari ’s health challenge , adding that “ so it seems there is a correlation between the President ’s health and the improved economy .“

On security , Adesina said the bank has released $ 250 m for the construction and rehabilitation of the Northeast , destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

He also revealed that the AfDB has constructed a big building behind the Yar ’Adua centre , as the project started in 2016 and has now been completed.

He said it was the first of such building by AfDB outside its Abidjan headquarters which he wants President Buhari to inaugurate.

Adesina said , “ I want to thank you immensely . I want to thank God for your health , because I must say that for all of us , that has been a big concern.

“ But seeing you as fit as a fiddle and seeing you back in action , we thank God for that and may God continue to give you great strength.

“ Mr . President , as you must have noticed, there is a very strong correlation between your health and the economy and when you came back, the economy picked up after that . So , we wish you great health so that the economy can continue to pick.

“ I also want to congratulate you for the economic growth and recovery plan that you have put in place and the incredible plan that you have put in place to bring the economy out of recession and also in terms of the fact that Nigeria has moved up in the World Bank ease of doing business index.

“ It is a credit to your leadership , vision and commitment ; and we at the African Development Bank commend you , Mr . President , and assure you of our strong support for you and your government , for the efforts to move Nigeria forward.

We are solidly behind you , you can count on that .
“ I also thank you for your leadership on the Boko Haram issue , because , to draw investments into Nigeria , you absolutely have to have security . I think that securing our borders is very very important . Thanks to your leadership for that.

“ I also thank you for all the efforts you have made in the Lake Chad Basin Area . I was with you in Paris where you led the efforts in reviving the Lake Chad Basin.

“ As you know, Mr . President , the Bank is very strongly behind that . We put in $ 250 m to support the northeast of Nigeria ’s rebuilding.

“ I know you were criticised for soliciting its rebuilding , but I don ’t see anything wrong with that . If things get destroyed , they have to be rebuilt and the African Development Bank has contributed $ 250 m towards that .”
