The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement says the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has not met any of its demands, one year after the parley between both parties. This was contained in a statement issued on Friday during a special sit-out in Abuja. The statement signed by Dr Oby Ezekwesili and Aisha Yesufu, it recalled that “On 8th July 2015, the#BringBackOurGirls movement, parents of our abducted #ChibokGirls and representatives of the Chibok community had an engagement with the new President, Muhammadu Buhari. “This was necessitated by the need to establish fact, the urgency of our cause and dispel misconceptions about our movement, especially considering the treatment we had received from the preceding administration. At the time of that engagement, our 219 girls had been in captivity for 450 days and the President acknowledged government failure with regards to the rights of our girls and victims of the insurgency. “As part of our submissions to the President, we presented Our crowd-sourced Citizens’ Solution to End Terrorism, Verification, Authentication and Reunification System (VARS), and a List of Demands. “We proposed that a team be tasked with the credible implementation of VARS. The primary task of the team was to work with every abducted victim’s family and community to accurately ascertain the true identity of such individuals. “Following their accurate identification, the comprehensive program for Recovery, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Reintegration was to be made available to them. It was also supposed to entail the setting up of a Missing Persons’ Register. “We requested that the President direct relevant Government representatives to work with the BBOG Family to commence work immediately on an Accountability Matrix, which will define the protocol for obtaining and sharing information with citizens. “We also suggested a monthly meeting between security operatives and community stakeholders in communities most affected by these acts of violence e.g. Chibok, Gwoza and Bama. We believed at that time that it would encourage much needed collaboration and information sharing to bridge the identified communication gap. “We requested that the President direct the establishment of a Commission charged with the task of transparently investigating and reporting on the security lapses that caused their successful abduction and the operational leadership failures that led to their long captivity in terrorist enclave. “This Commission was also to review the allegations of corruption within our security services that has hindered its capacity to perform effectively. We requested that the President direct that the Report of the Presidential Fact Finding Committee of the Chibok Girls and the Presidential Committee on Security Challenges in the North East be made public immediately. “We suggested that the Government begin, in earnest, a holistic process of proper sensitization and enlightenment to curb this trend of youth radicalization and extremism. The BBOG Family indicated willingness to work with the Government to design the programme. “We departed with the hope of re-engaging the administration towards setting clear timelines and deliverables for the five requests. “A year later, it is extremely disappointing that none of the five demands has been completed. Specifically, a failure to implement VARS means we still do not have a cohesive system of identifying liberated citizens or even a database of those affected. “Thanks to an initial partnership between the#BringBackOurGirls movement and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), a coalition of Government Agencies led by the NHRC has begun the initial processes towards the establishment of a National Missing Persons’ Register. We acknowledge this, but ask that the work is fast-tracked and completed for the benefit of displaced Nigerians. “A year after our engagement and close to six months since the President directed the setting up of a committee to carry out investigation into the abduction of our girls, we read of an approval of the members of the committee. Again the lack of urgency in the dispatch of responsibilities towards the rescue of our girls is alarming. “At this rate, it begs the questions – when will the committee be constituted? When will they be mobilized to start work? What time line will they work with and the reports submitted? Under what timeline will the government study and act on the report? What does this mean for our Chibok Girls who do not have the luxury of time and whose plight worsens with every passing hour, minute and second? “The non-release of the Report of the Presidential Fact Finding Committee of the Chibok Girls and the Presidential Committee on Security Challenges in the North East is also unacceptable. We demand an immediate release of these reports as their importance for lessons learned about the abductions and insurgency in general cannot be overemphasized. “We reiterate our position that sensitive areas with implications for national security as repeatedly mentioned can be blotted out of the public document. Global best practice supports this. These lessons learned while providing information to the public will justify the need for expenditure of public resources, provide metrics for scrutiny and acceptance of the new report and factual evidence for the prosecution of all benefactors of the diversion of funds for arms procurement”. source:dailypost.ng/2016/07/09/nothing-to-show-one-year-after-our-meeting-with-buhari-bbog-laments/

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, says operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are concocting evidence against his person out of desperation to nail him. The former minister said this in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Jonathan Eze, on Friday while reacting to a report published by The PUNCH on the former minister’s involvement in the N.4.7bn allegedly transferred from the imprest account of the Office of the National Security Adviser into his sons’ company account, Sylvan McNamara. The EFCC had alleged that Obanikoro allegedly took N168m from the money and then converted it to dollars at a Bureau de Change and was given a receipt which he signed. However, Obanikoro denied the allegations. He said when operatives of the commission ransacked his home in Lagos last month; they made away with vital documents and then altered them to suit their story. The statement partly read, “Recall that when the EFCC illegally raided my houses in Lagos, they went away with various documents which included blank signed letter headed papers as testified in the Affidavit sworn in the Court. “It has however come to my notice that the EFCC has allegedly written an acknowledgement on one of the documents purportedly used as evidence that I collected the equivalent sum of $1m in cash from a Bureau de Change and signed for it. “This is another lie from the pit of hell. How can anybody change money from a Bureau De Change and sign for it? “I still insist that throughout my stints as Minister, I never collected any money from any Bureau De Change and as such, I urge the public to ignore the EFCC who are trying to skew investigations in its favour. “The EFCC has obviously betrayed public trust by its latest sinister plan of manufacturing receipt in my name. Instead of genuinely carrying out its mandate, it has been grossly overshadowed by political wiles. “Last month, The PUNCH newspaper had quoted a detective at the EFCC saying: “The owner of A. A. G. B. S Oil and Gas confirmed to us that the company is a BDC but was only bearing the name of an oil company. He confirmed that he received N168m from Sylvan McNamara and $1m was delivered to Obanikoro in cash while he was the Minister of State for Defence based on the exchange rate at the time. “Obanikoro acknowledged receipt of the cash and we have recovered evidence.” Meanwhile, the commission has received a remand order, giving it permission to hold a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who allegedly received funds from the said N4. 7bn. Omisore will be held pending the completion of investigations. source:punchng.com/efcc-concocting-evidence-says-obanikoro-gets-order-hold-omisore/ |

Nigerians, particularly travellers, have called on the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi to ban the Peace Mass Transit from plying Nigerian roads. This was following the constant fatal accidents, which the transport company had recorded lately. DAILY POST reports that the company had within a short period recorded over 10 crashes, which led to the death of many Nigerians. Reacting to the development, safety expert, Emeka Zeluwa said the company should be banned from operating and be investigated for the recent mishaps it had recorded. According to him, “The rate at which Peace Mass crushes Nigerians to death is alarming. I think the ministry of transportation should do the needful by banning its operations nationwide. “The company should also be investigated for the reoccurent tragic incidents”, he told DAILY POST on phone. Similarly, Mr. Segun Adesanya, a civil servant believed that the company had inexperienced drivers. He voiced his conviction thus, “I have been a victim of Peace Mass Transit disaster last year. I lost a niece who was traveling with their vehicle. I am sure they don’t have qualified drivers, hence the reason for their daily crashes. I think they should be stopped from operating before they finally finish Nigerians.” Also a check on social media showed that Nigerians are not happy with the transport company. A nairalander, Feyi said, “PEACE should be banned for now……..when peace become pieces.” Another user called Dike said, “I have been trying to avoid saying anything about this Peace Mass Transit but it seems they won’t leave the headlines. “This is a failure of the Nigerian FRSC. Peace Mass ought not to be plying our roads anymore. If you want to see how to run a stupid and successful business, use Peace Mass as a case study. There is no day you go to Peace mass that you won’t see agbero fighting with a passenger or driver doing same. “They employ unfit and slow drunks who have no respect for speed limits and human life. People who are brainless and dumb. “I parted ways with these people a long while ago and will advise people to be wary before they embark on a journey with them.” On her part, Cecelia said, “The truth is that Peace Mass drivers are very reckless. They over speed a lot, but management of the company refused to do anything about it, lavishing human blood like say na pure water.” source:dailypost.ng/2016/07/01/accidents-nigerians-want-peace-mass-transit-banned-write-transport-ministry/
