JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africans are struggling in the dark to cope with increased power cuts that have hit households and businesses across the country. The rolling power cuts have been experienced for years but this week the country’s state-owned power utility Eskom extended them so that some residents and businesses have gone without power for more than 9 hours a day. A strike by Eskom workers added to the utility’s woes including breakdowns of its aging coal-fired power plants, insufficient generation capacity and corruption, according to experts. The prolonged power cuts are hitting South Africans in the winter months of the Southern Hemisphere when many households rely on electricity for heat, light and cooking. Small and large businesses have had to close down for prolonged periods or spend large amounts for diesel fuel to operate generators. Anger and frustration is widespread among business owners and customers at the power cuts, which Eskom calls load shedding. (AP Photo/Themba Hadebe, File) JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africans are struggling in the dark to cope with increased power cuts that have hit households and businesses across the country. The power blackouts are here to stay say experts who warn it will take years to substantially increase South Africa’s capacity to generate power. South Africa mines coal and relies heavily on coal-fired plants, which causes noticeable air pollution. The country is looking to increase power production from solar and other renewable sources. “The big picture is that we were at least expecting (heavy power cuts) this winter,” said energy expert Hilton Trollip. “Eskom told us at the end of last year that there was a chronic power shortage ... What that means is that until we have a substantial amount of extra generation on the grid, we will continue to be at the risk of load shedding at any stage. The question then is how bad will the load shedding be?” He lamented the impact of the blackouts on the economy. “The most direct economic consequence is when businesses have to stop production because they don’t have electricity ... whether you have a factory, a travel agency or you have a shop,” said Trollip. “Whenever economic activity is disrupted because there is no electricity, that is a direct cost to the economy.” The power cuts are costing South Africa well over $40 million per day and deterring investment, say economists. South Africa’s economy, Africa’s most developed, is already in recession and is suffering a 35% unemployment rate. Small businesses in the country’s townships, suburbs and rural areas are among the hardest hit by the effects of the rolling blackouts, said Trollip. Buhle Ndlovu, a teacher at a nursery school in Soweto, Johannesburg’s largest township, said the power cuts increased her costs to run the school. “We cater to about 40 children here. We need to feed healthy meals to them daily,” said Ndlovu. “At the rate we charge we can’t afford to take on additional costs to buy gas in order for us to cook. Loadshedding has really made it difficult for us.” She said it is a challenge to take care of children by candlelight until parents come to pick up their kids well after dark. Some shops, however, are getting new business from the power cuts, like Uri’s Power Center which is seeing brisk sales of power generators, batteries and other backup systems. “I think people should definitely look to become less reliant on Eskom. I don’t believe that the power situation is going to resolve itself any time soon,” said owner Adam Zimmerman at his shop in the Randburg area. “We’re all aware of Eskom problems and people have various options whether to invest in a generator to run their business or home.” On Friday, Eskom chief executive Andre de Ruyter said at a press conference that the crisis was receiving serious attention and that he had personally briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa about what the company is doing to keep the lights on. https://apnews.com/article/africa-johannesburg-south-climate-and-environment-6d508d26614e7aee1a0e23cfc030dd6b?utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&utm_medium=AP&utm_source=Facebook |
ROME (AP) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose $44 billion bid to buy Twitter remains in limbo, used the social media platform to announce he had met with Pope Francis. “Honored to meet @Pontifex yesterday,” Musk tweeted of the Friday afternoon audience, alongside a photo showing Musk, Francis and four of Musk’s teenage children. The Vatican didn’t announce the audience or provide any information about what was discussed. Musk’s tweet followed one of a street scene in Venice, suggesting he might have had other stops on his tour. Francis frequently meets with high-profile figures in strictly private audiences that are held in a reception room of the Vatican hotel where he lives. A common talking point he uses when meeting with corporate CEOs is to appeal for them to use wealth and technology to help the poorest while caring for God’s creation. On June 21, Twitter’s board recommended shareholders approve Musk’s proposed purchase, though shares of Twitter remain far below his offering price, signaling considerable doubt that the sale will actually happen. https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-pope-francis-twitter-inc-technology-e1af5422c1b69201c0a27a794d143053?utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&utm_medium=AP&utm_source=Facebook |

A European military task group that assisted Mali's government in combating Islamic militants has formally departed from the West African country, citing disagreements with the ruling military junta. PARIS — The French military, which led the Takuba task group, said Friday that it had completed its mission in Mali. The move came after France decided earlier this year to exit Mali after nine years of anti-jihadist operations. France has accused Mali’s authorities of neglecting the fight against Islamic extremists. But despite the withdrawal, the French military called the force a “strategic and tactical success” and an example of “what Europeans are able to achieve together in complex security environments." The European exit comes as at least 132 people were killed in recent weeks in attacks blamed on Islamist al-Qaida-connected fighters in central Mali, and after a contractor for the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali was assassinated on Thursday. It also comes as Mali's junta has grown closer to Russia, s Moscow has looked to build alliances and gain sway in Africa. The U.N. Security Council voted Wednesday to maintain the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali, while condemning its military rulers for using mercenaries who are accused of committing human rights and humanitarian violations. The junta has hired mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner Group, which has been accused by the European Union and human rights groups of violating human rights and international humanitarian law. While the Kremlin denies links to the company, Western analysts call it a tool of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The European Takuba force was composed of several hundred special forces troops from 10 countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden. It aimed at training and protecting Malian combat forces. https://www.voaafrica.com/a/european-force-leaves-mali-over-tensions-with-authorities-/6641770.html

R. Kelly’s sentencing does not only include prison time. On Wednesday, the R&B superstar was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted on all nine counts in his high-profile sex trafficking case. When he’s released, he will also have to adhere to a new set of conditions and undergo mental health counseling. According to documents, obtained by TMZ, the 55-year-old singer’s treatment will include therapy for an unspecified sexual disorder. He must also avoid all contact with anyone under 18. Additionally, he must inform anyone who lives with him that he is a sex offender. He will only be allowed to be around someone under 18 if it’s a family member, or it’s in a therapeutic setting where a “responsible adult” is present. Any situation would have to be approved by his probation officer. U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly also ordered Kelly to pay a $100,000 fine and remain under supervised release for five years. Kelly has maintained his innocence and plans to appeal his conviction. During the court hearing, Kelly’s accusers took the stand as they emotionally recounted how they endured sexual and physical abuse for decades. “You made me do things that broke my spirit. I literally wished I would die because of how low you made me feel,” said one survivor. Kelly, who will be in his 80s before he is released, could receive additional prison time and restrictions if he is convicted in his federal trial in Chicago on Aug. 15, where he faces child pornography and obstruction of justice charges. He also faces other state sex crime charges in Illinois and accusations of prostitution with a minor in Minnesota. https://www.rap-up.com/2022/07/01/r-kelly-sexual-disorder-treatment-prison-release/

A court in Uganda released veteran opposition figure Kizza Besigye on bail on Friday, 7.1.2022 after spending two weeks in jail awaiting trial on charges of inciting violence. KAMPALA — Uganda opposition leader Kizza Besigye, 66, was freed Friday after being detained on June 14 in the capital Kampala as he led protests against sky-rocketing consumer prices and was charged with inciting violence the following day. His initial bail application made on the day he was charged were denied. On Friday his lawyers applied for bail again and a magistrate agreed to release Besigye saying he was "satisfied that the accused's sureties are substantial", according to a live video feed on Besigye's Facebook account of the court proceedings. He ordered Besigye to pay 2.5 million shillings ($665) bail cash as one of the conditions for his release. He was ordered to appear in court again on July 29. Besigye has been calling for tax cuts to offset inflation, but President Yoweri Museveni has rejected the idea, blaming high prices on the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic. Museveni, in power since 1986, is now Africa's fourth longest ruling leader and the opposition and critics have accused him of rigging polls and using security forces to maintain his grip on power. Museveni denies the accusations. Besigye has run against Museveni four times in the past and lost although he rejected the results alleging fraud. He has been arrested dozens of times before. https://www.voaafrica.com/a/besigye-freed-for-now/6641153.html

A senior spokesperson for the Taliban government, Zabiullah Mujahid, on Thursday reported that a large meeting of Taliban officials in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, was attacked by unknown persons. On Wednesday, Afghanistan’s acting deputy prime minister, announced that females were banned from participating in the large gathering, organized by the Taliban to address issues of national unity. Abdul Salam Hanafi told state broadcaster RTA, that the gathering was the first of its kind since the Taliban took over in August 2021. When asked if women would attend, Hanafi said male delegates would represent women. “The women are our mothers, sisters, we respect them a lot, when their sons are in the gathering it means they are also involved, in a way, in the gathering. Hanafi said religious leaders had asked the meeting to address an Islamic system of government, economic and social issues. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pulse.ng/news/world/taliban-meeting-of-3000-attacked-in-kabul/flcv858.amp

Vladimir Putin has hit back at Western leaders who mocked his macho image this week, saying it would be "disgusting" to see them strip off. It comes after leaders at the G7 summit poked fun at the Russian president's tendency to pose for topless photos. But Mr Putin suggested his counterparts needed to cut out alcohol and do more sport. He also rejected comments from the UK's Boris Johnson that he wouldn't have invaded Ukraine if he were a woman. At a press conference, Mr Putin said this was "not correct" - arguing Margaret Thatcher had "decided to start hostilities" in the Falklands War. Mr Putin has been pictured shirtless several times in Russian state media, including whilst riding a horse, carrying a hunting rifle, and going fishing. The pictures have been widely interpreted as the Russian president seeking to project a sense of masculinity that appeals to many Russians. At the G7 summit in Germany earlier this week, Mr Johnson took a swipe at him, joking the leaders should take their clothes off to "show that we're tougher than Putin". The British prime minister also suggested the leaders "show them our pecs", whilst Canada's Justin Trudeau suggested "bare-chested horseback riding." Asked about the comments during a news conference in Turkmenistan, Mr Putin replied: "I don't know whether they wanted to strip down to the waist or below the waist, but I think that it would be a disgusting sight in any case." Referencing the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, he added: "You can be a smart person and think about the beauty of your nails." https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-61993157.amp
