Politics / More Money For Putin-russia. by NessFortunate: 9:13pm On Jul 09, 2022
Russian state-run Rosneft has confirmed an 82-million-ton oil discovery in the Pechora Sea in the Arctic.

Rosneft discovered the field thanks to a drilling campaign in the Medynsko-Varandeysky area. “During the tests, a free flow of oil was obtained with a maximum flow rate of 220 cubic meters a day,” the company’s statement read on Wednesday, noting that the “oil is light, low-sulfur, low viscosity,” Rosneft said, describing the drilling campaign in the Medynsko-Varandeysky area, as reported by Russian RT.

Rosneft described the findings as proving “significant oil potential of the Timan-Pechora province on the shelf.”

According to Russian media, Rosneft has a controlling interest in 28 offshore licenses in the Arctic, eight of which are located in the Pechora Sea.

The discovery announcement comes after Rosneft head Igor Sechin, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, told an economic forum on Friday that Western sanctions are illegal, warning of a coming biblical-style cataclysm.

In mid-June, Rosneft said it was going ahead with its Vostok Oil project in the Arctic, which Sechin has described as “the only project in the world that can bring a stabilizing effect on the oil market.”

According to Rosneft, Vostok will produce up to 115 million tons of oil per year by 2033. That volume of oil is said to be equivalent to 20 percent of Russia’s total oil production for 2021.

While Western analysts have speculated that Russia will not have the necessary technology under sanctions to grow oil production, Sechin has disagreed, despite the exit of partner Trafigura earlier in June.

“We have all needed competences, knowledge and experience, and in these kind of projects 98 percent of technology is produced in Russia,” Sechin told reporters in reference to the Vostok Oil project.

Trafigura Group said in mid-June that it planned to sell its 10-percent stake in Vostok Oil, for which it paid around $8.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020, Bloomberg reported.

The discovery announcement also follows Putin’s decision on July 1st to seize control of the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project in which Shell is an investor, along with Japanese investors, Reuters reported.

Foreign Affairs / DRC Mourn Again. by NessFortunate: 4:01pm On Jul 08, 2022
At least nine patients have been killed in an attack on a clinic in Democratic Republic of the Congo’s east, the army has said, blaming the raid on a local armed group.

Assailants believed to be from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan armed group that has operated in the dense forests of the region for decades, attacked a church clinic at around 10pm (21:00 GMT) on Thursday night, two witnesses said.

The ADF, which the United States has deemed a “terrorist” group, is considered the deadliest of dozens of armed militias that roam mineral-rich eastern DRC. It is linked to the armed group ISIL (ISIS).

An army spokesman said on Friday that the attackers were actually from a local fights collaborating with the ADF and using the same methods.

The army killed three fighters and captured one when it responded to the attack in the town of Lume, in North Kivu province, said army spokesman Anthony Mualushay.

He said there were nine dead, including three children, while a nurse at the hospital counted 13 bodies.

“In the hospital ward there were four patients who all burned to death, in the paediatric unit all the mattresses are burned and in the side wards we just collected nine bodies,” said Kule Mwenge Salomon, a nurse at Lume health centre.

Kakule Vikere Lem was feeding his father at the clinic when he saw a column of people with torches approaching the town, around 40km (25 miles) south-east of the city of Beni.

“I fled, thinking that they would spare the hospital, but unfortunately they burned my father in the hospital,” Vikere said

Politics / At Last Blatter Is Back In Business. by NessFortunate: 3:55pm On Jul 08, 2022
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and France football legend Michel Platini were both cleared of corruption charges by a Swiss court on Friday.

Blatter, who led FIFA for 17 years, was cleared of fraud by the Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona. Platini, a former France national team captain and manager, was also acquitted of fraud.

Prosecutors accused Blatter and Platini of unlawfully arranging for FIFA to pay the Frenchman 2 million Swiss francs ($2.06 million) in 2011. Prosecutors had asked the court to impose suspended 20-month prison sentences on both men, and to compel them to repay Zurich-based FIFA 2.23 million Swiss francs.

The case meant Blatter ended his reign as FIFA president in disgrace, and it wrecked Platini's hopes of succeeding him after he was banned from football when the affair came to light. Blatter, 86, had said the 2 million franc payment followed a "gentlemen's agreement" between the pair when he asked Platini to be his technical adviser in 1998.

Platini, 67, worked as a consultant between 1998 and 2002 with an annual salary of 300,000 Swiss francs -- the most FIFA could afford because of money troubles the organisation had at the time, Blatter told the court. The rest of Platini's 1 million per year salary was to be settled at a later date, Blatter said.

"I want to express my happiness for all my loved ones that justice has finally been done after seven years of lies and manipulation," Platini said in a statement.

"The truth has come to light during this trial," he added. "I kept saying it: my fight is a fight against injustice. I won a first game."

Motives for the alleged payment were unclear, although the two men met in 2010 and discussed the upcoming elections for the FIFA presidency in 2011. When Blatter approved the payment, he was campaigning for reelection against Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar. Platini, then president of European soccer association UEFA, was seen as having sway with European members who could influence the vote.

Prosecutors said the oral agreement between the two men for Platini to be paid 2 million francs later for his consultancy work never existed, and described it as an "invention". The payment emerged following a huge investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Justice into bribery, fraud and money laundering at FIFA in 2015, which triggered Blatter's resignation.

Both officials were banned in 2015 from soccer for eight years over the payment, although their bans were later reduced.

Platini, who also lost his job as UEFA president following the ban, said the affair was a deliberate attempt to thwart his attempt to become FIFA president in 2015.

The crude shotgun in visuals from the site of the attack appears to be two long metal barrels glued on to some kind of a hard board with black tapes. The exact working and the firing mechanism of the homemade shotgun are likely to be revealed later after investigators have analysed the gun.

For long security agencies across nations, especially the US, have been discussing possible threats linked to people using guns made with 3D printers.

Britain in June 2019 convicted a 26-year-old man, Tendai Muswere, of making a firearm with a 3D printer that was capable of firing a lethal shot. The police had said they believed it was the first British conviction linked to a gun made using a 3D printer.

3D-printed guns are a huge problem for law enforcement agencies as they could be made anywhere and escape regulation. Their crude nature also makes them easy to hide.

If indeed the Japanese assassin used a 3D-printed gun, questions are going to come up about how he managed to sneak in the shotgun near the former Japanese Prime Minister despite a security ring.

The murder of the 67-year-old, who had been Japan's longest-serving leader, stunned the nation and prompted an international outpouring of grief and condemnation.

It was all the more shocking given Japan's strict gun laws and low rates of violent crime, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida describing it as a "barbaric act" that was "absolutely unforgivable."

Foreign Affairs / NATO Strategize Against Russia. by NessFortunate: 5:38pm On Jul 05, 2022
BRUSSELS (AP) — The 30 NATO allies signed off on the accession protocols for Sweden and Finland on Tuesday, sending the membership bids of the two nations to the alliance capitals for legislative approvals — and possible political trouble in Turkey.

The move further increases Russia’s strategic isolation in the wake of its invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February and military struggles there since.

“This is truly a historic moment for Finland, for Sweden and for NATO,” the head of the alliance, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, said.

The 30 ambassadors and permanent representatives formally approved decisions made at a NATO summit in Madrid last week, when the leaders of member nations invited Russia’s neighbor Finland and Scandinavian partner Sweden to join the military club.

Securing parliamentary approval for the new members in Turkey, however, could still pose a problem even though Sweden, Finland and Turkey reached a memorandum of understanding at the Madrid summit.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned that Ankara could block the process if the two countries failed to grant Turkey’s demands for the extradition of people it views as terror suspects. The people wanted in Turkey have links to outlawed Kurdish groups or the network of an exiled cleric accused of a failed 2016 coup in Turkey.

He said Turkey’s Parliament could refuse to ratify the deal. It is a potent threat since NATO accession must be formally approved by all 30 member states, which gives each a blocking right.

Stoltenberg said he expected no change of heart. “There were security concerns that needed to be addressed. And we did what we always do at NATO. We found common ground,” he said.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has given the process added urgency. It will ensconce the two nations in the Western military alliance and give NATO more clout, especially in the face of Moscow’s military threat.

“We will be even stronger and our people will be even safer as we face the biggest security crisis in decades,” Stoltenberg said.

At a news conference, the foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland were asked whether the memorandum specified people who would have to be extradited to Turkey. Both ministers said no such list was part of the agreement.

“We will honor the memorandum fully. There is, of course, no lists or anything like that in the memorandum, but what we will do is to have better cooperation when it comes to terrorists,” Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said.

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto was equally adamant.

“Everything that was agreed in Madrid is stated in the document. There are no hidden documents behind that or any agreements behind that,” Haavisto said.

Every alliance nation has different legislative challenges and procedures to deal with, and it could take several more months for the two Nordic nations to take their place as official NATO members.

Denmark and Canada were quickest out of the blocks. They handed over their ratification documents in Washington as the first NATO countries just hours after the accession protocols were signed in Brussels, Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod told The Associated Press by phone.

“It was a good signal not only to Sweden and Finland, but to other NATO countries that the speed of ratification is important,” he said. “We hope this inspires other countries to react fast.”

The documents need to be handed over in Washington because NATO’s founding treaty was signed there in 1949.

Germany’s parliament is set to ratify the membership bids Friday, according to the Free Democrats, a partner party in the country’s coalition government. Other parliaments might only get to the approval process after long summer breaks.

“I look forward to a swift ratification process,” Haavisto said.

In the meantime, the protocols approved Tuesday bring both nations deeper into NATO’s fold already. As close partners, they already attended some meetings that involved issues that immediately affected them. As official invitees, they can attend all meetings of the ambassadors even if they do not yet have any voting rights.

Crime / Black Lives Doesn't Matter As Man Shot 60 Times.. by NessFortunate: 5:46pm On Jul 03, 2022
Protestors demand justice after police shoot Black motorist.

“Disturbing” police body camera video shows officers in Akron, Ohio, fire more than 90 shots towards the back of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black motorist who fled a minor traffic stop on foot earlier this week. More than 60 of the bullets hit Mr Walker.

Attorney Bobby DiCello, who is representing Mr Walker’s family, viewed the footage ahead of its expected released Sunday afternoon by Akron authorities at a planned news conference.

“In my 22 years of doing trial work, both as a former prosecutor for Cuyahoga County and as a civil rights attorney on many serious cases of lethal use of force, I have never in my life seen anything like this, ever. It is very, very disturbing,” Mr DiCello told the Akron Beacon Journal. He added that Mr Walker appeared to suffer between 60 and 80 wounds.

The lawyer said the video was “unbelievable” and “brutal”, but called on community members to honour requests from Mr Walker to keep ongoing protests peaceful.

We’re all bracing for the community’s response and the one message that we have is the family does not need any more violence,” he said. “... It needs peace, and it wants peace, and it wants the process to play out.”

Officer encountered Jayland Walker in the early hours of Monday morning, stopping him for a minor equipment violent.

When he encountered police, the 25-year-old took off on foot, the body camera footage shows, according to the attorney.

Akron police have said they saw a flash of gunfire, captured on a state transit camera, from Mr Walker’s car before he fled, though Mr DiCello said he has seen no evidence of this. He noted that all the windows in Mr Walker’s car were intact when it was found.

Community members have been protesting the shooting for days.

“When some people don’t follow directions, they wind up in handcuffs,” Hamza Khabir, of activist group Law Enforcement Equality Reform, told The New York Times. “When Black people do so, they wind up being shot and killed.”

The city canceled a planned 4 July celebration in light of the shooting.

“He was my skinny little nephew,” Mr Walker’s aunt Lajuana Walker Dawkins said at a news conference on Thursday. “And we miss him. We just want some answers.”

An unspecified number of Akron police officers have been placed on administrative leave after the shooting.

The Akron Police Department and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are probing the shooting, and will turn their findings over to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
