TRCN Reveals Number of Registered Teachers in Nigeria

The Federal Government has said that although Nigeria has two million qualified and registered teachers, the country is in need of 250,000 teachers annually to cater to the growing population of pupils.

This was made known by the Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, Prof. Olusegun Ajiboye.

Ajiboye noted that as a country with the largest number of out-of-school there was a need for adequate teachers to meet the learning and teaching needs of children.

ASUU FIRES BACK AT CHIEF BISI AKANDE FOR CALLING UNION VAGABONDS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has attacked the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its former national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.

ASUU described Akande as the grandfather of half-baked government.

This was in reaction to Akande’s earlier attack on the union where he accused the striking lecturers of producing vagabonds and unemployable graduates.

Strike: ASUU Warns of Imminent Anarchy in UNILAG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter has warned of imminent anarchy in the institution over an alleged autocratic handling of the school by the Pro-Chancellor.

It also decried the alleged antics of the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Wale Babalakin to scuttle the ongoing ASUU strike through divide and rule mechanism.

Chairman, ASUU-UNILAG in a release signed by the ASUU Lagos Zone chapter chair, Professor Olusiji Sowande warned that the continuation of Dr. Babalakin as the Pro-Chancellor represents present and future danger to the existence of the University of Lagos.

ADDRESSING CHALLENGES OF UNQUALIFIED TEACHERS

The declaration by the Federal Government that unqualified teachers, who are not yet licensed and registered by the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), would be flushed out by 2019 did not come as a surprise given numerous challenges facing the delivery of qualitative education in the country. Even before issuing the deadline, the high rate of unqualified teachers has constituted a threat to the nation’s education sector. It is alarming that 207,818 unqualified teachers are in primary schools across the country, as declared by TRCN based on a survey carried out last year by the Federal Government.

The survey conducted by the Federal Government revealed that of the 207,818 unqualified teachers in the primary school sub-sector, the North-East geopolitical zone had the highest figure of 57.7 per cent. The Council traced this misfortune to the invasion of Boko Haram insurgents and other militias that ravaged the nation with the North-West having 46.8 per cent; North-Central 38 per cent; South-South 19.2 per cent, South- East 16.7 per cent and South-West 6.7 per cent unqualified teachers. NYSC CANCELS DAVIDO ONE YEAR MANDATORY SCHEME

National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has cancelled the compulsory one-year orientation exercise embarked on by Nigerian musician David Adeleke popularly known as Davido.

The ‘Fall’ singer revealed the scheme cancelled his service in a comment he made on Instagram.

New Zealand Police Still Searching for Missing British Tourist after Five Days

New Zealand police are still in search of 22-year-old British tourist Grace Millane who has been missing for five days and failed to contact her parents on her birthday.

Millane was last seen on Saturday evening in central Auckland. She had been staying at a backpacker hostel and left some of her belongings there. Her birthday was on Sunday and police said it was unusual for her not to contact her family then.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard told reporters the investigation is focusing on videos from surveillance cameras around the city. He urged anyone who has seen Millane or knows her to contact police.

Two US Warplanes Crash off Japan; 2 Found, 5 Missing

A Marine refuelling plane and a fighter jet crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Japan’s southwestern coast after colliding early Thursday, and rescuers found two of the seven crew members, one of them in stable condition, officials said.

The U.S. Marine Corps said that the 2 a.m. crash involved an F/A-18 fighter jet and a KC-130 refuelling aircraft during regular refuelling training after the planes took off from their base in Iwakuni, near Hiroshima in western Japan.

The crash took place 320 kilometres (200 miles) off the coast, according to the U.S. military. Japanese officials said it occurred closer to the coast, about 100 kilometres (60 miles), and that’s where the search and rescue mission found two crew members.

NBA President Paul Usoro Charged With N1.4 Billion Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has filed a N1.4 billion suit against Paul Usoro, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

In the lawsuit filed at a Federal High Court in Lagos marked FHC/418c/18, the anti-graft agency alleged that Usoro laundered the money in connivance with the state governor of Akwa Ibom, Udom Emmanuel.

Rotimi Oyedepo, counsel to EFCC, said the offence was committed sometime in 2015 and that the N1.4bn belonged to the state government.

US Priest Accused of Abusing Altar Boys Arrested in the Philippines

The Rev. Kenneth Bernard Hendricks, who has been indicted in Ohio for illicit sexual conduct in the Philippines, was arrested in a church in Naval town in the island province of Biliran, Bureau of Immigration spokeswoman Dana Sandoval said.

An Ohio court had issued a warrant for the arrest of 77-year-old Hendricks, who has been living in the Philippines for 37 years, Sandoval said, adding that the U.S. criminal case stemmed from complaints from the alleged Filipino victims.

There was no immediate reaction from the U.S. Embassy, Philippine Catholic Church officials or Hendricks, who was flown to Manila and detained in an immigration detention centre.

OGUN BUTCHER KILLS WIFE FOR BEING RUDE

A butcher, Sina Kasali, who stays in Abosule, Agbado, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State is currently in police custody for killing his wife, Sherifat Kasali.

It was gathered that Sherifat accused her husband of peeping into the private parts of a neighbour who is said to be a commercial sex worker.

He reportedly chided the wife for being rude and subsequently beat her up until she collapsed. It was learnt that a neighbour invited a nurse to attend to Sherifat because Kasali refused to take her to a hospital.

AFGHAN PRESIDENT ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO SEXUAL ABUSE OF FEMALE ATHLETES

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has ordered the Attorney General’s office to conduct a proper investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of female athletes.

Tuesday’s statement from the presidential palace quotes Ghani as saying that any kind of misconduct against athletes, male or female, was not acceptable.

The development follows a Guardian report last Friday about cases of sexual abuse of Afghan female soccer players. Ghani says this was “shocking to all Afghans.”

Taliban Storm Checkpoint, Kill Police Chief in Afghanistan

The Taliban stormed a police checkpoint in northern Sari Pul province killing a district police chief and another officer, an Afghan official has revealed.

Amani, the governor’s spokesman, says the attack triggered an hours-long gun battle and that there are also casualties among the Taliban.

Amani further said the attack on Monday night in Sayyad district also wounded four policemen.

6 POLICEMEN KILLED BY GUNMEN TRYING TO FREE PRISONER IN MEXICO

Six policemen were killed in western Mexico when a gang of gunmen attacked them in an apparent bid to free a prisoner they were transporting, authorities said.

The attack is the most serious by criminal gangs since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office Saturday, pledging to quell violence in Mexico.

The attorney general of Jalisco state, Marisela Gomez Cobo, said gunmen travelling in three vehicles attacked the state police patrol near a highway in the town of La Huerta.

UNILORIN Student Commits Suicide over Unmet Academic Expectation

A student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) identified as Adigun Olawale Emmanuel has reportedly committed suicide during the weekend over unmet academic expectation.

The 22-year old final year student from the Faculty of Agriculture was supposed to graduate in the just concluded 2017/2018 academic session but failed in the final project and was made to repeat his final year.

It was also gathered that the deceased student decided to take his life because he could no longer achieve the Second Class Upper Division grade which he had expected to make in his final year result.

Adigun was said to have taken his life after he drank a pesticide, Sniper.

A police inspector attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ikeja on Wednesday allegedly shot dead an official with the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) who was controlling traffic.

According to online reports, the deceased identified as Adeyemo Rotimi was shot dead when he challenged the police man for disobeying traffic rules at Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos.

It was also gathered that the LASTMA official reportedly scolded the policeman for violating the traffic rules which made him pull his trigger and shoot the LASTMA official.

FSARS OPERATIVE WHO KILLED LASTMA OFFICER DIED HOURS LATER, PPRO REVEALS

The Nigerian Police has disclosed that the F-SARS officer, Olukunle Olonade, who allegedly shot Rotimi Adeyemi, an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, at Iyana-Ipaja axis has died.

According to the police, Olonade also died hours after he fatally shot Adeyemi while been rushed to the hospital. It was learned that Olonade, an Inspector of Police, was mistaken for a robber and attacked by an irate mob at the scene where he was beaten to stupor.

Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, Chike Oti, in a statement made available news men on Thursday, said that the police officer was rescued from the scene by a team of police officers deployed to Iyana-Ipaja.

NSE CEO, ONYEMA, STEPS DOWN AS ASEA PRESIDENT

The Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mr Oscar Onyema, has stepped down as the president of the African Securities Exchanges Association, following an election in Lagos.


A statement released by the association on Tuesday, said the Chief Executive Officer, Casablanca Stock Exchange, Mr Karim Hajji, was elected as the president, while Mr Edoh Amenounve was elected as the deputy president at its 22nd Annual General Meeting.

The statement said Hajji would take over the leadership of the association from Onyema, after he had successfully served two terms as president of ASEA.

The Lagos State Government relaunched Marriage Registries services in all its 57 councils.

The launching ceremony took place on Tuesday with calls on Lagosians to patronize them.

Performing the relaunching at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, the Lagos State Head of Service Mrs Folashade Adesoye said the event followed the landmark ruling of a Federal High Court in Lagos which affirmed that marriage registries in LGCs and LCDAs are the authentic organs of government charged with the responsibility to conduct marriages in the state.

GERMANY INVESTS €20M TO ADDRESS UNEMPLOYMENT, MIGRATION IN NIGERIA

The Head of Cooperation, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nigeria, Christopher Wenzel, has said the German government has identified the need to address growing skill gap in Nigeria, particularly by providing necessary skills to tackle youth unemployment and migration.

Speaking in Abuja at the Skills Development for Youth Employment (SKYE) Stakeholders’ meeting organised by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Wanzel said the initiative aimed at providing demand-based skills to address youth unemployment and irregular migration crisis.

“We see the potential in Nigerian youth. What we try to do is to make use of that capacity. We want to bring together the demand for work, labour, for service together with supply. We don’t want to train people who don’t find jobs; we want to train them to find decent jobs. We want to meet the demand of the industries,” he said.

SENATE URGES FG TO SUSPEND TARIFF INCREMENT ON ALCOHOL, OTHERS

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the tariff increment on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products until all stakeholders have been consulted.

Oyo State Government Directs Religious Bodies to Start Paying Annual Security Levy
Religious organisations are to pay annual security levy to the Oyo State government as part of efforts to strengthen the state security trust fund for improved policing in the state.

This revelation was contained in the frequently asked questions fliers distributed by the Oyo State Security Trust Fund obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday.

According to its classification of the sectors into large, medium and small, manufacturing and services are to pay N100,000, N80,000, N60,000 in that order while trading, agriculture and forestry including solid minerals were pegged at N80,000, N50,000 and N30,000 respectively.

RUSSIAN BANK MISTAKENLY GIVES $12BN LOAN TO CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Central African Republic landed a windfall on Tuesday, at least on paper, when Russian state bank VTB reported it had lent the country 12 billion dollars.

However, the bank then said it was a clerical error and there was no such loan.

The loan was mentioned in a quarterly VTB financial report published by the Russian Central Bank.

VIOLENCE ERUPTS IN AKWA IBOM ASSEMBLY AS APC AND PDP LEGISLATORS CONTINUE POWER TUSSLE

There was pandemonium yesterday (Tuesday) at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in Uyo, the state capital as five opposition lawmakers, purportedly suspended by Speaker Onofiok Luke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reconvened to initiate the removal of Luke and begin the impeachment of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The sitting of the five All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, led by factional Speaker, Nse Ntuen, was scuttled by suspected thugs. The APC lawmakers were suspended for defecting from the ruling PDP.

Ntuen, assisted by scores of armed policemen, stormed the Assembly Complex in the company of his four colleagues at about 8.30am and allegedly broke into the main chamber to hold their plenary.

I CAN NO LONGER FEED MY FAMILY, METUH TELLS COURT AS HE LAMENTS FREEZING OF HIS ACCOUNTS
Former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) spokesman Olisa Metuh told a Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday (Tuesday) that he could no longer feed his family because his bank accounts have been frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Metuh said he learnt early yesterday that a no debit order has been placed on his accounts on Monday night when he tried unsuccessfully to make a transaction in one of the accounts.

The ex-PDP spokesman spoke while testifying at the resumed hearing in his trial. Metuh is being tried, with his company, Destra Investment, on charges of money laundering.

Veteran actor Emeka Ike has joined the race of politics as he declares his intention to run for a seat in the hose of representative in Imo state.

AUSTRALIAN CONJOINED TWINS LEAVE HOSPITAL SEPARATED
Fifteen-month-old conjoined twin girls Nima and Dawa who were joined from the lower chest to just above the pelvis and shared a liver have been separated during an operation at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital that lasted almost six hours. The conjoined twins from Bhutan were released from the Australian hospital, more than two weeks after they were separated in the delicate surgery.

“Thank you, everyone,” their grateful mother, Bhumchu Zangmo, said as she wheeled her daughters from the hospital where their lives have been transformed since their arrival. The hospital’s head of paediatric surgery Joe Crameri told reporters the twins had made an “excellent recovery” and were acting independently.

US VISA-SEEKING CUSTOMERS DEFRAUDED BY TRAVEL CONSULTANT
A 39-year-old travel consultant, Jessica Esorougwe has been arrested by the police for defrauding two customers seeking visas to the United States of America. She collected a total of N760,000 from the victims to assist in procuring visas for their families.

One of the victims, Mrs Yemisi Bello, said sometime in April, Mrs Jessica Esorougwe was introduced to her as a travel agent for the American visa. She (Jessica) said she had a programme in New York City, USA, for children between 12 and 16 years. Bello said she told her that she won’t be able to go for it as she had a six-year-old son but suggested her sister for the programme.

“The agent asked me to pay the sum of N420,000 for my sister and her two daughters and I paid. In addition to the earlier payment, she later requested another N90,000, which she claimed was the visa appointment fee and I paid.

SERAP DEMANDS PROBE OF MILITARY BUDGET

In order to promote transparency and accountability in the state, the Socio-Economic and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Federal Government to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the spending of defence and military budgets between 1999 and 2018.

The group call followed the attack of the Malete military base in Borno State by terrorists, with many soldiers killed.

According to SERAP, the investigation would ensure that the funds meant for military operations are spent for the purpose and also end the vulnerability and killings of Nigerian Soldiers.

SIX KILLED IN MYSTERIOUS HOUSE FIRE IN SWITZERLAND
Six people have been killed in a fire at a residential building in northern Switzerland, police says.

A resident of the building in Solothurn alerted police early Monday after noticing smoke on the stairs. Police said that more than 20 people were in the house at the time and that the fire appears to have broken out in of the lower floors, spreading smoke throughout the building.

WAEC Awards Three Girls as Overall Best Students in Nigeria

West African Examination Council (WAEC) has awarded 18-year-old Miss Isabelle Gelegu from Esan North LGA of Delta State of Oritamefa Baptist Model School Ibadan the 1st prize National Distinction/Merit Award 2017.

The apex examination council also awarded two other girls, Miss Favour Ngozi Etuonuma of Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College Ilorin, Kwara State as well as Miss Adenike Temitope Adedara of Louisville Girls High School Ijebun-Itele Ogun State, the 2nd and 3rd prizes of the same National Distinction Merit Award.


The award ceremony was one of the highlights of the WAEC 56th Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria National Committee (NNC) 3-day meeting in Calabar.

Chairman of the NNC, Dr Lami Amodu who presented the various awards alongside other dignitaries, said the awards was a result intense scrutiny by WAEC officials.

The council also awarded three secondary schools in the State awards for being adjudged the best administered in the year 2017. The three schools also jointly won a prize of $5000 from the Endowment Fund Book for the aggregate results in to WASSCE for school candidates in 2017

The schools are Assurance community secondary school Ovubra in Obubra LGA (1st), Hillcrest College Calabar, 2nd(private) and Federal Science College Ogoja, in that order. They went home with prizes, including trophies.

A lecturer at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Anambra State, identified as Mrs Okwuchi kidnapped by unknown gunmen has regained her freedom.

The victim, lecturing at the Agricultural Department of the institution was reportedly kidnapped on Saturday at the market square where she came to make some purchases.

DStv: Subscribers Demand Pay-as-you-view Billing System

Digital Satellite Television service subscribers in Nigeria are grumbling over the continued payment for services not rendered by MultiChoice, the major distance-to-home service provider in Nigeria.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday, DStv subscribers pleaded with the Federal Government to enact a law to compel MultiChoice to introduce “pay-as-you-view billing’’ system.

The subscribers said that there was a need for such billing system, as it would ensure value for the subscription.

Many of the subscribers complained of paying for what they did not get services for, saying that after several complaints, MultiChoice did not listen.

OYO STATE GOVERNMENT SPEAKS ON ONGOING RECONSTRUCTION OF AYEFELE’S MUSIC HOUSE

The Oyo state government says the ongoing reconstruction of Yinka Ayefele’s Music House was made possible by the artiste’s admittance of breaking building laws.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Bolaji Tunji, the special adviser to the governor on communication and strategy, Ayefele’s acceptance to rectify the contraventions, which would involve the reduction of the frontage fence line by 1.5m, among others, informed the intervention by the governor.

In line with the recommendation of the joint committee of the state government and the Music House management, he said that an entrance was being reconstructed from the rear of the building to the staircase housing the ramp for the exclusive use of Ayefele.

American model and actress Kim Porter, mother of three children of hip-pop mogul Diddy is dead.

According to reports, Kim was found dead at her home in Los Angeles, California on Thursday at the age of 47.

Governor Ortom Directs SUBEB to Rename School after Rape Victim Ochanya

OYO STATE GOVERNMENT BEGINS RECONSTRUCTION OF YINKA AYEFELE’S BUILDING
Three months after the demolition of the Music House, the building owned by gospel singer Yinka Ayefele, the Oyo State Government has begun a reconstruction of the landed property.


According to online reports say construction workers are on site doing their business with sources revealing that they have a deadline to complete work on the building by December 2018.

Japan’s SoftBank Invests in US Office Space-sharing Startup, WeWork
WeWork, which targets start-ups, is operating not only in the U.S. but also India, China, Peru, Israel and other nations, as well as Japan, where real estate is relatively expensive, allowing WeWork an opportunity to grow.

American office space-sharing company, WeWork has obtained $3 billion in funding from Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank Group Corp.

FG REACTIVATES EXPORT GRANT WITH N13.2BN – UDOMA

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udoma, has said the Federal Government has reactivated the Export Expansion Grant with the sum of N13.28bn to stimulate the exports of locally produced goods.

He said the amount was captured in the 2018 budget being implemented by the Federal Government.

The EEG is an initiative of the Federal Government designed to encourage exporters of non-oil products, including agro-commodities in order to cushion the effects of infrastructural deficiencies and reduce the overall unit cost of production.

The Lagos State Government has approved the use of hijab on Uniforms in Public schools.

This was disclosed in a circular by A.O Olukoya for Tutor General/ Permanent Secretary of the State.

The circular was entitled “Re-The Use of Hijab in Lagos State Public Schools.”

The circular reads in part: “Since the case of the use of hijab in Lagos State is still pending in the Supreme court of Nigeria, status quo be maintained, to avoid contempt of the court, that is students be allowed to wear hijab on school uniforms but same must be short, smart, neat and in the same colour as the uniform (skirt).

ASUU Strike: Federal Government yet to Reply Strike Notification Letter

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared its worries over the lack of interest displayed by the Federal Government in the quality of education in Nigeria as it is yet to reply the letter of notification issued by the Union to the Federal Government since the union resumed strike on Monday, November 5, 2018.

The national president of the union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi made this known while speaking with newsmen on Monday.

ATTACK ON TRADERMONI IS AN ATTACK ON HARDWORKING NIGERIANS, SAYS VP SPOKESPERSON

The call by some individuals under the auspices of a group named Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum to suspend the TraderMoni, one of the microcredit schemes of the Buhari administration’s Social Investment Programme, is both unbelievable and unfortunate, according to Mr Laolu Akande, Spokesperson to the Vice President.

Akande, who was reacting to news report credited to the group, noted that such an attack on the Social Investment Programme (SIP) is a direct confrontation with the millions of Nigerians benefitting from all the SIPs, especially the projected 2m total who will be receiving the collateral-free loans by the end of the year.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has fulfilled his promise of increasing the monthly allowance of corps member in his state from N5, 000 to N10, 000 which he made during a recent visit to NYSC orientation camp.

The incident occurred when the vehicle conveying her to the hospital was forced to stop and there was no available vehicle to convey her to the hospital as all motorists all ran for their lives.

OSINBAJO: 1.1M NIGERIANS BENEFIT FROM GEEP, OVER 800,000 RECEIVING N10,000 INTEREST-FREE LOANS

NUC APPROVES MORE POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FOR BELLS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Following the government’s refusal to honour signed agreements, the Academic Staff of Niger State College of Education, Minna has embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands.

Among the agreements is the total implementation of the Consolidated Polytechnic and Colleges of Education Academic Salary Structure.

OAU Medical Students Reject Exploitative Training Fee
The resolution of the Association of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine (APCOM) to impose professional fees on students undergoing medical training in public universities is causing unrest at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State.


OAU medical students have protested against APCOM’s recommendation, vowing to resist the school management’s move to impose the fees on them.

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Anchor Heritage Empowerment has secured the release of 27 inmates, who had been behind bars at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison, Lagos.

The NGO did this in its quest to assist in human capacity development and rehabilitation of inmates due to lack of resources and legal representation of the Inmates.

The CRO of the foundation, Bidemi Oladipupo said the legal help to the inmates and accelerated efforts towards prison decongestion was necessary because most of the inmates are still awaiting trial.

About 26 inmates of Agodi Prison in Ibadan, Oyo State are set to write the 2018 National Examination Council (NECO) examination.

FG, GOVERNORS FAIL TO AGREE ON NEW MINIMUM WAGE

The meeting between the Economic Management Team (EMT) and State Governors over new national minimum wage failed to reach common ground on an acceptable amount to be adopted on Monday.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo presided over the meeting at the presidential villa, Abuja attended by the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, his counterparts from Kebbi and Plateau, Atiku Bagudu and Simon Lalong as well as Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige and other stakeholders.

In a brief chat with State House correspondents after the meeting, Governor Yari confirmed that the Governors were yet to agree on a figure.

VENICE EXPERIENCES ITS WORST FLOODING SINCE 2012

Tourists and residents in Venice’s famous St. Mark’s Square were seen wading in nearly waist-deep water as the city experienced its worst flooding since 2012.

Bad weather and high winds are adding more water in from the lagoon leaving officials fearful that history will repeat itself as it happened in the 1966 flood when the water levels rose more than six feet above sea level.

Sirens had sounded across the city when the water is above 43 inches. By late afternoon, the city has been flooded by 70 per cent. The elevated levels shut down the city’s water bus service known as vaporetti except to the outer island.

NNPC BREAKS SILENCE ON CHANGE IN PUMP PRICE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has debunked the news making rounds online about plans to increase pump prices of petroleum products, especially PMS.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the corporation spokesman, Ndu Ughamadu on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 in Abuja.
In the statement, Ndu affirmed that contrary to the misinformation in the social media, the Federal Government has no plan to review prices of petroleum products either downwards or upwards.

Japan’s Princess Ayako has married Kei Moriya, a commoner in a ritual-filled ceremony at Tokyo’s Meiji Shrine. This implies that the Princess loses her royal identity.

Ayako and her groom were shown on national news as they walked slowly before guests at the shrine. The wedding which took place in one of the pagoda-like buildings in the shrine complex included an exchange of rings and a sharing of a cup of sake.

LEICESTER CITY CONFIRM OWNER DIED IN HELICOPTER CRASH

English Premiership side, Leicester City have confirmed that the club’s Thai owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was one of the five people who lost their lives in the helicopter crash outside the club’s King Power stadium moments after it ook off from the pitch on Sunday.

The club posted the message on its official website on Monday morning.

The statement read:

It is with the deepest regret and a collective broken heart that we confirm our Chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, was among those to have tragically lost their lives on Saturday evening when a helicopter carrying him and four other people crashed outside King Power Stadium. None of the five people on-board survived.

Mixed Reaction as Buhari Says his Credentials are still with the Military

President Muhammadu Buhari has told the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that his credentials are still with the Nigerian military. This is the same excuse he gave when he was campaigning in 2015.

According to online report, INEC reported that over 70 names of aspirants had been posted as of Thursday night with a comprehensive list expected to be published on Friday.

In an affidavit the president swore to, he said; “I am the above named person and the deponent of this affidavit herein. All my academic qualification documents as filled in my Presidential form, APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary of the Military Board as of the time of this affidavit.”

BREAKING: Five Corps Members Kidnapped in Imo state Rescued by Police

Five members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Akwa Ibom and Rivers states who were kidnapped on Wednesday by unidentified gunmen on their way to their orientation camps have been rescued.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State capital, to Rivers and Akwa Ibom states where they were posted to undertake their three-week NYSC orientation.

The kidnapped victims were coming from Ibadan and they were kidnapped on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway and taken to the Umuapu forest in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

NECO SUSPENDS TWO TOP OFFICIALS OVER ALLEGED FRAUD
The National Examination Council Board (NECO) has suspended two of its top management staff for alleged involvement in N400 million fraud.

This is coming barely after six months after the Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Charles Uwakwe and three other management staff were suspended from the office.

It was gathered that one of the management staff involved in the latest fraud is a state officer in one of the Northern states of Nigeria, but the fraud was said to have been committed while he was in charge of the state in the South Western part of Nigeria.

Jeremiah Ojediran, the Vice-Chancellor of the Bells University, Ota, Ogun state has revealed that a total number of 47 students would graduate from the institution with a First Class Degree for the 2017/2018 academic session.

TWITTER SUSPENDS CONSPIRACY THEORIST ALEX JONES AND INFOWARS ACCOUNTS
Twitter says it has noticed an account linked to conspiracy-monger Alex Jones and Infowars, and the accounts have been suspended.

A spokesman from Twitter confirmed that the accounts had been removed. There was no additional comment from the company.

Twitter have permanently suspended @realalexjones and @Infowars from Twitter and Periscope in early September. Twitter said the action was based on the reports of tweets and videos that violated the policy against abusive behaviour.

Nnamdi Kanu Allegedly Returns, Pictures of Him in Jerusalem Surface
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has reportedly been sighted at the Wailing Wall in the Holy city of Jerusalem, Israel.

Social media is currently awash with photos and even a short video of the relusive separatist leader in Jerusalem.

It would be recalled that Kanu was last seen in public after the Operation Python Dance carried out by the Nigerian military during the Anambra state governorship elections last year.

NETFLIX SERIES ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK ENDS WITH SEASON 7
Netflix has made an announcement that one of its biggest ever hit, Orange Is the New Black, is coming to an end. The women’s prison-based comedy-drama will come to an end after its upcoming seventh and final series.

On the show’s official Twitter account, cast members including Uzo Aduba and Taylor Schilling promised it would go out with a bang.

It was first aired in 2013 and has been since then, a huge success, picking up Emmys and Screen Actors Guild awards. The show is set in the fictional Litchfield prison and is based on the 2010 memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in A Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman.
